You Deserve to be Counted!

A

n invitation to the 2020 Census is on its way to you! We have one chance every 10 years for a fair count of everyone living in our community.

How will the new census process work?

Between March 12 - 20 you will receive a letter in the mail inviting you to participate in the 2020 Census. You will be given the option to respond either online or by phone at that time.

The traditional paper census form will arrive in a mailing sent April 8 - 16. A census taker will visit you to complete your census questionnaire beginning in May if you have not responded by the end of April.

Real Census Bureau employees will NOT ask for your full Social Security number, for money or donations, or for bank or credit card numbers.

Check to make sure that the census takers has a valid identification badge

What happens if I’m missed?

You won’t be represented in the census for the next decade. While a few unrepresented residents shouldn’t affect a community’s federal funding, if many in your area go uncounted, then federal money — or representation — that would rightly go to your region would go to other communities or states. (Your personal benefits like Social Security and Medicare won’t be affected.)

As the number of older residents in Marin County increases, how will the census improve their lives?

A recent AARP survey shows that most older adults want to stay in their homes and communities as they age. Filling out the census could increase the likelihood of that happening. Census data will be used over the coming decade to decide where

to place parks, roads and hospitals. It will determine funding for community projects that benefit people of all ages, including mass transit, which helps many people remain in their homes longer.

How do I know someone claiming to be from the census isn’t a scam artist?

There is currently limited impact of COVID-19 to actual census operations as most people will have the opportunity to be counted by phone (844-330-2020) or online (my2020census.gov).

Should the public health risk increase, the US Census Bureau will enact measures they have prepared as noted in their recent statement on census.gov.

The positive impact that Mrs. Esmaili’s selfless efforts have made on Whistlestop members and the Marin community at large is difficult to measure. She has served as interpreter, attorney and advisor to hundreds. She helps new immigrants find jobs, housing, and community, and she is a friend to all. For those missing their native land, spending time with Mrs. Esmaili brings them closer to home while feeling welcomed in their new country and community.

e couldn’t be more thrilled for and proud of our longtime Whistlestop friend and volunteer, Mehrbanoo Esmaili, for winning the prestigious 2019 Heart of Marin Award for Volunteer of the Year!

Thrilled and proud – yes, but not surprised. In 2019 alone, this volunteer powerhouse dedicated 394 hours to Whistlestop, and an astonishing 900 total hours of volunteer service to her Persian community.

It’s rare that you meet someone who defies superlatives. But from the time she walked through Whistlestop’s doors 22 years ago, Mrs. Esmaili has done just that, raising the bar for what the word “volunteer” means.

Mrs. Esmaili came to the U.S. from Persia with her husband and 2 sons in 1979. A practicing attorney in her country of origin, she could have continued in law, but chose instead to volunteer her time, teaching future generations about the culture and language of her native land so it would not become lost.

When she was offered a paid position at Whistlestop in 1997, she once again felt that volunteering her time would be best. Turning down a paid position in order to be of maximum service is the kind of pure commitment and dedication

can usually find her in the Jackson Café, celebrating a Persian holiday, a new citizenship, an anniversary or a birthday. She brings happiness and joy to all of us at Whistlestop and the many friends she’s made along the way.

Learning about the lives of others and developing an understanding of how we all contribute to the issues of social justice not only impacts the community at large, but each of us as individuals. We are impressed by the insights these young volunteers have shared with us, we salute Dominican University for this forward-thinking program, and thank them for their partnership!

This February, Marin Transit Connect, Marin Transit’s on-demand, accessible pilot program, was expanded to serve downtown

San Rafael, including the Whistlestop Active Aging Center, and expanded areas in Santa Venetia, Marinwood and Lucas Valley. Fares for Connect were adjusted to a distance-based pricing of $4 per mile, and Marin Access riders can take advantage of a discounted $3 flat fare.

Monthly passes are also available to the general public for $80 and to Marin Access riders for $40. Share the ride because extra riders are only $1 per passenger!

The adopted plan includes changes to local bus pass programs, Catch-A-Ride, Dial-A-Ride, and paratransit fares, the reimbursement rate for STAR & TRIP volunteer driver programs, the LowIncome Fare Assistance program, and eligibility standards for Marin Access programs. As an Essential Service defined by the County of Marin’s new Shelter in Place Order, Whistlestop Nourish and Meals on Wheels continue to be in full operation, delivering vital nutrition to the homes of those in need.

We are seeking volunteers to deliver these life-sustaining meals. We will also continue our CarePool volunteer driver program to get older adults to essential medical appointments.
