Hula your way to fitness

Weighted hula hoops have come out as one of the biggest international fi tness trends this year.

Other trends gaining plenty of enthusiasts include ZUU, stroller fi tness, reverse running and trapeze classes.

They were revealed in a new study by UK-based PureGym, which analysed worldwide Google search data for over 100 di erent fi tness trends to calculate the increase in interest in the time between now, and the same period last year.

Largely thanks to going viral on TikTok recently, weighted hula hoops have seen the biggest spike in interest heading into 2022. ZUU, the brain-child of Aussie fi tness guru Nathan Helberg, that uses movements inspired by the animal kingdom to give a challenging full body workout, wasn’t far behind, proving more popular than other big fi tness trends such as CrossFit and Boxercise.

The trend to workout at home because of Covid-19 was found to be declining, with interest in the likes of ‘online workouts’ dropping by 64 percent, according to the survey results.

The fi ndings also showed that this year many who exercise regularly will be mixing up their routines by merging them with other interests or activities. Plogging, which benefi ts both your health as well as the planet by picking up litter while you run, is one example, while ‘beer yoga’ is also on the up, a trend that is exactly what it says on the tin: a yoga session featuring an ice-cold pint.

The top 20 trends the survey found were:

Longer lives tied to physical activity

New research shows why people live longer, and it’s likely because they are more physically active.

Researchers from Harvard University in the USA used evolutionary and biomedical evidence showing that people, who evolved to live many decades after they stopped reproducing, also evolved to be relatively active in their later years.

The researchers say that physical activity later in life shifts energy away from processes that can compromise health and toward mechanisms in the body that extend it.

ExerciseNZ chief executive Richard Beddie says the exercise industry always knew physical activity was excellent for people’s longevity, but now they know why because of this research.

“The Harvard researchers hypothesise that people evolved to remain physically active as they age, and in doing so to allocate energy to physiological processes that slow the body’s gradual deterioration over the years.

“This guards against chronic illnesses such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and even some cancers.

“Their paper is the fi rst detailed evolutionary explanation for why lack of physical activity as humans age increases disease risk and reduces longevity,” Beddie says.

Hit the trail

North Canterbury is home to a growing number of cycle trails, suitable for all ages. Here are some to try next time you’re in the area.

Amberley to Leith eld

8.3km, 1 hour Stage 1 of the Amberley Area Cycle Trails (AACT) is open so you can now cycle, walk or run safely between Amberley and Leithfi eld without needing to use State Highway 1.

Starting near the Old Leithfi eld Hotel the trail crosses the usually dry Kowai Riverbed, passes through a scenic farm, then follows Stockdills Rd, on to Grays Rd, past the Recycling/Transfer Station, to the corner of State Highway 1 and Grays Rd.

An alternative to the Grays Rd, Stockdills Rd, and Riverlea Farm route is to cross the Kowai on the downstream side of the SH1 bridge and use Hursley Terrace and Amberley Beach roads to enter Amberley.

Leith eld Village to Leith eld Beach

3.6km, 20 min The trail to the beach starts on the banks of the Kowai River, upstream at Terrace Rd. It then crosses under SH1 and continues on down the banks of the Kowai River to its mouth, running south from there behind the sand dunes to the small coastal settlement.

An o -road lime chip path connects the beach alongside Kings Rd back to SH1 at Pukeko Junction.
