SUPREME HOUSE OF THE YEAR
Supreme construction
Six houses entered; six gold awards won, including the 2021 Registered Master Builders’ Canterbury Supreme House of the Year Award. Winning six awards, two category awards, the lifestyle award and the overall Supreme Award has never been achieved before. It’s well known that quality and perfection are hallmarks of the work of the Clive Barrington Construction team and this result certainly endorses the reputation.
It’s a total team eff ort.” says Clive Barrington. “We could not have reached this pinnacle without the input of the entire team. Building quality into your home doesn’t have to cost the earth. It’s all about great people consistently doing great work.”
Each of the six homes entered off ered its own unique construction challenges. Building the Supreme Award winning
home designed by South Architects though, was, as Clive puts it, “very demanding work, with its audacious freeform copper roof – but that’s what we specialise in and thrive on.” That it was indeed demanding is echoed in the judges’ citation:
“Combining design with functionality and excellent workmanship has resulted in this fantastic home. While this home created some major construction challenges, the builder relished in delivering a home of supreme quality and merit.
“From the foundations, the precast concrete walls, to the complex roof structure, the accuracy of this builder is clear. This building is inspiring; it features a clever design, meticulous attention to detail and an accurate construction.”
Clive Barrington Construction celebrates 40 years in business this year. Over that time working alongside its clients and internationally recognised architects, the company has built many of Canterbury’s most admired homes and achieved awardwinning results.
It continues to be a formidable force in a competitive industry basing its ethos on honest old school values and quality craftsmanship. This has enabled the team to repeatedly bring the clients’ visions and the architects’ designs to life, exceeding expectations time and time again.
After many successful years at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year, both regionally and nationally, the company had a break from entering after being awarded a Platinum Award. The Platinum Award recognises builders who have won fi ve National Category Awards – Clive Barrington Construction had 13. As 2021 rolled around the company thought it was about time to front up again at the awards with a sample of its recent work. The rest is history.

Bringing home the gold
And the gold goes to… M & S Construction of Queenstown for a home in the over $2million category.
Builder Marty Hulsman is over the moon at his company’s success in the Southern House of the Year awards. “This is only the second time we have entered one of our homes in the awards and it is really good for our team to be recognised as doing an outstanding job.”
The house is spectacular in design and location. Curving around a ridge on Queenstown Hill the views span from the Crown Range in the east to Walter Peak in the west with the Remarkables Range taking centre stage.
To take optimum advantage of those views and of the sun that is so important for southern home owners, architect Christine Hall has made the house long and narrow and stepped up the hill on six split levels as the ground rises. This feature allows the house to remain closely connected to the terrain, a concept further enhanced through the use of schist and cedar cladding. Inside, the house is divided in two by a full-height honed brick wall, while panels of coloured glass in the entranceway transform the sun into rainbows.
“We love the challenge of building architecturallydesigned houses,” says Marty Hulsman. “This project presented a few to keep us thinking ahead to overcome any issues that might arise. That’s where our years of experience are invaluable. We had to deal with both solid rock and softer earth, as well as with a very steep site.
Because there are so many levels and angles in the house, the build took the best part of three years to complete. Winning the Gold Award is the culmination for us of a very satisfying project.”

A future classic
Creativity coupled with a client-focus is at the heart of all interior designer Davinia Sutton’s work. A kitchen and bathroom recognised at the 2021 NKBA (National Kitchen and Bathroom Awards) is a consummate example.
My clients reside in a classic pavilion-style architecturally-designed home in a rural setting,” says Davinia. “They wanted their kitchen to have a strong connection to the outdoors, as well as to complement the forms and materials of the architecture.” A careful mix of selected fi nishes including natural and engineered bench tops and soft matt painted and veneerstained joinery achieve the desired outcome. Although the joinery is applied to refl ect the form and detail of the architecture, it still provides a modern twist on the traditional cabinetry ‘panelled’ door profi le
“The bathroom also called for that mix of modern luxury and connection to the surrounding architecture. Our design response is a master bedroom wing complemented by a sensual bathroom space with a modern Hampton’s aesthetic.” To bring this together the colour palette is kept simple with a mix of fi nishes providing the desired sense of warmth and luxury. A feature charcoal mineral stone bath placed in front of shutter- clad windows creates a sense of sophisticated style and classic charm.
“The overall result is a space that our clients will cherish for years to come.”

A “supreme” house - simple in form, but fl awlessly constructed. That’s Te Toka, the Queenstown house designed by Rafe Maclean Architects and built by DCD Builders, which won the Supreme Award in the Registered Master Builders Southern House of the Year, plus several other awards in the competition.
The whole house is one seamless piece of architecture,” says Dennis Dowling of DCD Builders. “It was highly rewarding to work on as we were involved from the outset by the client and assembled the full team from architect to all the sub-trades.”
From the quality of the build to the mastery of the craftsmanship this house in Jacks Point is exceptional. Its simple form belies the complexity, technology and workmanship required of the build over 19 months. A standout feature is that the landscape has contributed to the house through the use of quarried schist from the site itself. The house is energy-neutral and completely self-suffi cient – a home that looks to the future of environmental sustainability.
“We were blown away by the win. It was very emotional because it was so unanticipated.”
Successfully building architecturally designed homes involves collaborative teamwork, and that is certainly true of Te Toka. A standout feature of the house is the beautiful joinery designed by Sue Nauman Design and manufactured and installed by Nasko Factory.
“This was an epic project for us, spread over a year and a half,” says Steve Walak of Nasko Factory. “The sheer scale of it was a challenge as the house is 820sqm, including a separate apartment. Our role was to manufacture all the joinery for the kitchens, walk-in robes, bathrooms and laundries, as well as making built-in shelving in the living areas.”
The results are spectacular – crisp white high gloss joinery complemented by black features and fl ecked engineered stone in both the kitchens and bathrooms.
The banks of cupboards in the kitchens fl ow seamlessly and the walk-in robes and laundries are full of diff erent clever storage spaces.
“It was extremely satisfactory to complete the work in the timeframe allowed. We were delighted the house won the highest award and to know we were part of it all.”

older. We had a very good idea of what would work for us and we appreciated the support of our daughter-in-law Lucy Gard’ner Moore, who is an interior designer.”
To that end the house has hydronic underfl oor heating, as well as ducted heating and ventilation and a log burner. The hallway and doorways are wide. There are tiles throughout, except in the bedrooms and level entry into the showers and from all internal doors to the outside. All around the house is hard landscaping of decorative exposed aggregate concrete, perfect should there be any need later in the Gard’ners’ life for a wheel chair.
“Designing our own house meant that we included not only the functional elements we require, but we could also choose all the materials and make the dwelling attractive and appealing. We paid particular attention to storage and detailing, such as brass trims on the doorways and furnishing the house around the Asian artefacts collected on visits to Shanghai. The outcome is the best of both worlds.”
