CELEBRITY TREASURE ISLAND

Treasure hunting for charity

Christchurch radio DJ Lana Searle is one of 21 Kiwi personalities battling it out for $100,000 for their chosen charity in Celebrity Treasure Island.

Other contestants include All Black legend Buck Shelford, Shorty Street icon Angela Bloomfi eld, actor Chris Parker, comedian Joe Daymond, and reporter Jess Tyson.

Filmed in the Far North earlier this year not too far from Lana’s home of Dargaville, the More FM Breakfast Club host, who is a self-professed Treasure Island fan girl, couldn’t wait to hit the beach.

The Christchurch-based presenter is Ngati Kuri, whose iwi are also the founders of the charity she is supporting. So relocating back to the Far North for a stint on the show makes this experience even more special for her. Called 4th Gen, the charity was founded two years ago and works to fi nd ways to educate people on the culture and the biosecurity issues that we face in our ecosystem.

“They are also doing a lot of work educating people on the arts in the Māori world. They are such a new charity and very close to my heart,” Lana says. What induced you to take part in Celebrity Treasure Island? I’ve always wanted to see if I would actually do as well as I thought I would from the couch, so when the opportunity came up I knew I had to step up!

What preparation did you do? The only prep I did was talk to my dad who is a man of the Far North; he reminded me that there’s more to eat on the land than you think.

What’s your game plan (do you have one)? My game plan is to be the ultimate underdog and be a sleuth.

What do you hope to get out of it? To learn things about myself that I can then take on into life.

Why that charity? I am of Ngāti Kuri descent and have wanted to reconnect with my iwi for a long time, this whole experience has enabled me to do that and 4th Gen is a wonderful charity bringing the rangatahi of Ngāti Kuri together to ensure the land and the people are better off .

What do you think is your biggest asset or strength? I know a lot more than I realise about everyday stuff in the Far North, including a few things that aren’t really common knowledge. Things about tea tree, things about Harakeke fl ax. I know hundreds of things you can do with fl ax. I am that person you want on your pub quiz team.

Did you pack anything strange or unusual? I packed two pairs of jandals. There would be nothing worse than a jandal blow out on Treasure Island. Maybe I could use Harakeke fl ax?

Do you think you can win? I think I can win. I think I have been an underdog most of my life. I am most comfortable in the underdog environment.

Embracing change

Flexibility in our work, business practices and in our personal lives is the most important trait to embrace in 2021, say realty duo, Milena Bartlett and Andrew Swift.

The excitement of an online auction

August’s Alert Level 4 lockdown meant a scramble for most Kiwis to sort life out on multiple fronts, including Milena and Andrew of Harcourts Gold, who had two auctions arranged for August 25. Not wanting to let their clients down by postponing, they made it happen by moving the auctions online.

“We embraced the new processes needed to keep our vendors and purchasers moving forward,” says Milena.

This paid off with two successful auctions, held via Zoom, with both properties selling above the reserve price, with multiple bidders.

As a team with 30-plus years in the Canterbury market and with proven sales strategies Milena and Andrew always have a contingency plan.

“As an agent you can only get it right once. There’s no room for hindsight on how you could have done it better,” says Andrew.

The fi rst step in the journey of selling a property will determine everything that follows. Get it right from the start by calling Milena on 027 917 5191, email milena. bartlett@harcourtsgold. co.nz or Andrew on 0274 319 621, email andrew.swift@ harcourtsgold.co.nz

Trust your gut instinct

Ruth Coppard was diagnosed with breast cancer last October, aged 61. Now in recovery, she shares her story to encourage other women to be proactive about their breast health.

To other women I would say:

Self-examine your breasts monthly, after your period; make this a part of your routine (put it in your cellphone reminders). Get to know what your normal is. If you are one of those who have dense breast tissue, you may not be able to diff erentiate a tumour from your normal lumps, and mammograms are not as eff ective as a diagnostic tool for you either, so ask to follow through with an ultrasound. Stand up for yourself; be your own advocate - or fi nd a friend who can do this for you. Be proactive; become knowledgeable and involved in your own treatment. You do have choices - every procedure is agreed upon in consultation with you. Trust your gut instinct. I did, and I’m hoping it’s saved my life. Coming face to face with the issue of my mortality was my fi rst hurdle.

I loved and wanted to be with my grandchildren in their formative years. I then faced the loss of my breast, but this was not nearly as diffi cult as the impact of losing my hair. I had always had a wonderful tumble of curls and it was a very large part of my ‘identity’.

I lost my sister to breast cancer when she was 35 years old, and had been having yearly mammograms since my late 30s.

Then in May 2019, I noticed a lump in my left breast. A mammogram and ultrasound showed no concern in that area, but the ducts under the nipple were distended and ‘debris-fi lled’. On ultrasound three months later I was given the all-clear.

My 2020 screening mammogram in early September came back clear, but I was still concerned about my left breast so I asked for it to be reviewed. In October further tests showed I had invasive ductal cancer.

In December I had breast conserving surgery (a lumpectomy) and one lymph node taken, but in January I was back for a mastectomy and to have all the lymph nodes taken from my underarm area.

Concerned at delays in receiving chemotherapy and radiation treatment in the public system, I saw a private oncologist for a ProSigna gene test. My result, within two weeks, showed my cancer was more aggressive than fi rst thought, and I started chemotherapy privately before continuing in the public system. Chemotherapy was followed by three weeks of radiation treatment in June/July.

I’m feeling on top of the world now!

I’m defi nitely not the same person as I was pre-diagnosis; I’ve grown immensely in wisdom. I have always found the joy in every day, but now I feel that my outer layers have been stripped away. I have learnt to simply project my happy bubbly self - to trust my authenticity, with a new strength and honesty - from the Inside - the ‘real me’.

The support I receive from Breast Cancer Foundation NZ has been amazing; the nurses were my lifeline in my fi rst few months of breast cancer. Of all the medical people I have spoken with, they have been the most knowledgeable over a very wide range of expertise, off ering support, encouragement, and suggestions for a way forward for me to consider. I can’t underline enough how valuable they are.

Here are some of the ways to get involved: PINK RIBBON STREET APPEAL – Grab a bucket, get pinked up and join thousands of volunteers collecting around NZ on October 29 and 30. PINK RIBBON WALK – Walk 5km or 10km for the ones you love in Christchurch on November 6. Visit www.breastcancerfoundation.org.nz to see how you can make a diff erence this October.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Leading New Zealand musicians, classical pianist Michael Houstoun, jazz trombonist and bandleader Rodger Fox and special guest, acclaimed blues vocalist Erna Ferry, are coming to Christchurch in October.

Houstoun and Fox were the headline act at the recent Wellington Jazz Festival and are long-standing friends. A chance meeting in Christchurch in 2014 led to an unlikely but superb combination of two of New Zealand’s pre-eminent musicians.

This tour provides South Island music lovers the opportunity to experience the very best of jazz from the recent Wellington Jazz Festival.

The South Island tour takes in Queenstown, Invercargill, Oamaru, Christchurch and Ashburton.

Jazz adaptations of classical music by Gino Vannelli, arranged by acclaimed composer Bill Cunliff e, will be performed at each event, as well as the Cunliff e original ‘Warriors’ and a rhythm/vocal version of Charles Trenet’s I Wish You Love sung by Ferry.

Ferry will also present The Rolling Stones classic Honky Tonk Women, a version of George Gershwin’s Summertime and the Peggy Lee classic I Love Being here With You.

Rookie realtor’s love of tourism

When Dilan De Silva switched careers, little did he know how successful he would become.

Dilan, a former hotel general manager, decided, just prior to New Zealand’s 2020 Covid-19 lockdown, to try his hand at real estate, specialising in tourism businesses and properties.

Since exiting 2020 lockdown, the proud South Island resident has sold 33 tourism businesses, worth more than $20 million, earning him Tourism Properties’ ‘Rookie of the Year” title.

“Even though our borders were shut, the tourism real estate sector has been very active,” he says. “If you are thinking of a lifestyle change or a move to the South Island, now is an ideal time to consider investing in tourism or running a tourism business,” he adds.

Dilan says opportunities [motels, hotels, campervan parks, backpackers, restaurants and activities] are plentiful, and most will provide free housing, pay your bills, generate good net profi t, and off er an aff ordable work-life balance.

“At any given time, I deal with 20 to 30 tourism businesses; I should be able to fi nd you the perfect match at the budget you require.

“It’s the perfect time to join the industry. Our borders won’t be shut forever.”

Prepping for a successful sale

While the universe throws curveballs into the mix of life, a reassuring constant presence is the buoyancy of the housing market. Houses continue to sell quickly, prices are still rising, and there are plenty of buyers about.

Entering the market as a seller is a step to be taken thoughtfully, with an agent that understands your requirements and knows the market for your property. The right person will have a proven track record, be a people person, and a provide service that is bespoke to you. Feeling like you’re on a conveyor belt with a bunch of other clients is never satisfactory.

The right agent will also love meeting people and love what they do. They will in fact be just like super-agent Karen Glassey, of Mike Pero Real Estate Avonhead.

Karen says sellers just need to get the basic presentation right, she takes over the rest, and the result is very happy clients. Simply clip lawns and edges, remove rubbish from everywhere (don’t forget behind the garage), declutter inside to the point where it seems empty to you, and have your EQC paperwork handy. If selling is on your mind this spring, Karen would love to give you a free appraisal.

one on one Take a deep breath Take a deep breath

Star of TVNZ 1 show The Apprentice Aotearoa, Mike Wilson knows the importance of mental health, having battled with it for the past two decades. Now a fully certifi ed Rebirthing Breathwork facilitator and life transformation specialist, he explains to Metropol readers how breathwork can help others.

Lockdown, isolation, social distancing, quarantine are all terms that have made their way into everyday use.

“Covid-19 has had a signifi cant impact on how we interact with others, go about our lives, our work, our study and many other aspects of our lives. And as we’re facing uncertainty for the coming weeks and possibly months, it’s now more important than ever to look after our mental health,” says Mike.

“Simply put, breathwork refers to any type of breathing exercise or technique and people often perform breathwork exercises to improve their mental, physical or spiritual well-being.

“If you’ve ever been to a yoga class you would have heard the instructor reminding you to ‘control your breath’. And at its core, this is what breathwork is all about, breathing consciously, with awareness and with intent.”

Mike says that tools such as breathwork are exactly what is needed to ensure mental, spiritual and physical health are all in alignment, which is crucial during these turbulent times.

Where do you start?

There’s a mountain of diff erent types of breathwork, so Mike suggests starting with a simple daily breath routine, one that he can teach in under two minutes.

“This short routine will ensure your immune system is growing stronger, lower your stress levels and bring you out of your mind and into your body, where you will feel more grounded, less reactive and fi rmly into the present moment rather than the worrying mind.”

Take a deep breath Take a deep breath

Mike Wilson’s five benefits from daily breathwork:

Calmed nervous system, allowing for less stress and lower cortisol levels

Lowered anxiety as you are brought to the present moment

Ability to build your immune system higher

Feeling of being grounded and fulfi lled

Focuses you into your physical body, and out of your head.
