Dance like no one’s watching
As Tom Cochrane once sang, “Life is a highway” and to my way of thinking life may be likened to just that. Speed bumps along the way make us slow down, stop, or take a di erent direction. The journey is usually enjoyable for those who believe in themselves, and have the confidence to try new things, experience di erent cultures, and are not afraid to back themselves.
Self-confidence is a common factor inherent in those who follow their dreams, yet sadly I hear more and more about those su ering from a lack of self-confidence and how it impacts their lives for worse, not better.
Building self-confidence isn’t easy; there’s no recipe and it is not one size fits all. Knowing what causes low self-esteem helps. Ongoing stressful life events such as a relationship breakdown, financial trouble, job loss, poor treatment from a partner, parent or carer, and being in an abusive relationship all contribute.
Improving self-confidence is about courage; having the courage to try new things and dance like no one is watching. Of course, they will be watching and some may even be judgemental; just don’t let them get to you.
Trying to control how others see us—whether by meeting their standards or pretending they don’t exist—is a losing game. Letting go of that need is far more liberating, opening the door to connection and inspiration.
Self-confidence and self-care are often closely linked, so do make an effort, each and every time. Build positive relationships. Those who are negative and try to bring you down can often drain your confidence, so ditch them, and seek out those who do inspire you.
Challenge yourself to take small steps towards achieving bigger goals, and don’t forget to dance from time to time. That way you’ll inspire others to follow in your footsteps.

Netball’s favourite name: Anna Galvan
Without Kiwi female sporting legends to admire on the world stage, a young Anna Veronese may have never become a Silver Fern. Now, as Anna Galvan, she’s an icon of New Zealand netball, dedicated to ensuring young wāhine in sport always have role models, discovers Metropol Deputy Editor Nina Tucker.
Fostering passion and talent through relationships, community, and opportunity is key – without which many keen netballers lose interest. Anna works quietly behind the scenes and has done since her Silver Fern days, to keep participation and interest climbing.
“Netball has given me a profound sense of community; I’ve always wanted to share that with others. My dedication to netball is driven by a desire to foster the same sense of inclusion and belonging within the wider Canterbury community, ensuring that young aspiring netballers in our region have role models to look up to, just as I did,” Anna shares.
Ngā Puna Wai, the home of Christchurch Netball Centre for over a year now, is a project Anna spearheaded and a labour of love for

the team involved. Today, it’s a facility the local netball community couldn’t imagine living without, a space that has helped recruit hundreds more players.
Anna’s tenacity was needed. “Ngā Puna Wai has been a gamechanger,” she says, then reflects on time spent convincing some within the sporting community that it was necessary. “Now, with Ngā Puna Wai’s popularity across all sports, it’s clear that this facility was needed. Beyond just netball, it’s brought the community together across di erent codes, making our region a more active and connected place,” Anna confirms. Plus, it o ers

$11 million to Christchurch Netball following the Canterbury earthquakes, to achieve the ‘kick start’ a project like this needed. The build budget was secured with NZ Lotteries, NZ Community Trust, and The Rātā Foundation funding. As generosity cascaded – reaching a whopping $16.5 million – pressure escalated. “I felt a genuine sense of responsibility to deliver on the benefactor’s wish to see a community facility built in Christchurch,” Anna admits.
The complex’s eventual completion left her burnt out. “Hours and hours of toil and stress went into that project,” she adds, recounting the contribution and constant phone calls with fellow director Warren Poh. “Anna navigated each challenge with grace and success, and all the while was committed to the best for netball and ensuring this gift for the community is as lasting as possible,” Warren says.
From first discussions to fruition, the facility was 12 years of devotion – an incredible investment of many people’s energy. Once it o cially opened, the time came to take a step back: “I now focus more on supporting my two daughters, who love netball as much as I do. Seeing them enjoying the sport the way I do is fantastic.” Thanks to Anna’s hard work, a steady stream of local talent ascends the ranks to become the role models young, up and coming players like Anna’s daughters need.
competitive, and growing up with brothers, I spent a lot of time at home competing with them in anything we could.” Netball channelled that competitive edge perfectly – she had found her place.
Villa Maria College was the “obvious” high school choice, Anna notes a fantastic netball programme that connected her with coaches and mentors such as Sally Mene, mother of Silver Fern legend Bernice Mene. Anna was so close she could taste it, surrounded by the possibility of making that dream a reality. “I looked up to [Bernice Mene]. Her success showed me that becoming a Silver Fern was possible.” Anna also idolised former Commonwealth and Olympic swimmer Anna Simcic – witnessing wāhine in sport succeed was the fuel she needed. “Having known Bernie and having met Anna [Simcic] made my dreams of representing New Zealand all the more obtainable,” she adds.
“Hours and hours of toil and stress went into that project.”
No longer on the Christchurch Netball Board, Anna remains on the Tactix Management Committee. “I am ready for my next netball challenge, I’m just not sure what that looks like yet,” Anna adds.
In late February, Anna won a Netball New Zealand Service Award. Following that, she now has self-growth and relaxation in her sights, challenging herself to read 52 books this year. This energy, amongst the hustle of maintaining an 11-acre property, hiking the Port Hills, or a mind in constant forward-thought sums her up as a person.
Such spirit saw Anna rise throughout her career outside of the game. An Executive Director role at Te Hono, (a partnership between leaders in New Zealand’s food and fibre sector, iwi, and government), led her to an opportunity at a Stanford University Executive Education programme. “During my time in San Francisco, I worked closely with Richard [McPhail, CEO of LeaderBrand] and other inspiring business leaders. By January of this year, he had convinced me to join LeaderBrand as their Strategic Advisor,”
Anna explains. She took the leap and moved to Gisborne, commuting once a month to Christchurch. It’s an “exciting challenge” and a real-life example of the drive that exists outside of a professional sporting career. Anna balances work, family, and personal life, scheduling time to support three children who share her elite physical drive. Isabella, 21, is heading to Australia to play netball, Harry, 18, “just won three national rowing titles”, and Charlotte, 16, enjoys rowing and netball.
Her own story within the sport began as an eight-yearold at Christchurch’s St Joseph’s Primary. “I’ve always been
Anna moved through secondary school, representing on a regional and national level, before joining the inaugural Canterbury Flames team. “I was young and inexperienced, but I was surrounded by seasoned players like Cate Sexton, Helen Mahon-Stroud, Donna Lo hagen, Margaret Foster, and Lesley Nicol.” Entrenched in a community that felt like family, Anna’s career soon spanned 17 years across the Silver Ferns, Southern Steel, and Tactix, with a Commonwealth Games silver medal and three wonderful children in between.
Amongst the highs and lows of injuries, family-work balance, and navigating challenges within leadership roles, Anna cherishes friendships from netball more than anything. “Those relationships will stay with me forever,” she smiles.

Studies suggest one-third of New Zealand homes drop below the minimum healthy indoor temperature in winter. Bundling up in blankets and bedding is a quick solution, and Christchurch Methodist Mission’s Fionna Chapman tells Metropol Deputy Editor Nina Tucker she’s gearing up again for the cooler months with one goal: Every Child Warm This Winter.
When costs come between keeping families warm in winter, the Christchurch Methodist Mission’s Blanket Bank initiative comes to the rescue. “We see families come through the doors with children that are cold – they have no extra money to keep them warm,” Community Development Practice Lead Fionna shares. The Blanket Bank fills a gap and o ers easy access to drop o and pick up blankets judgementfree. Warm bedding within reach is essential in maintaining the dignity of those seeking it. “We see more families needing the support that wouldn’t usually access these services.”
Hundreds of blankets and bedding keep Canterbury families and tamariki (children) warm, donated by local benefactors and distributed by Fionna and her team. These blankets act like a warm hug – a symbol of the strength of community – to lend a helping hand to whānau struggling. Relieving this financial stressor means families can allocate that money towards other essential expenses,
such as food or power. Hours are spent combing through donations to ensure families are equipped with clean, quality blankets and bedding. “Sometimes, it’s not pleasant,” Fionna laughs. “Everyone’s threshold of clean linen is di erent.”
Thanks to Fionna, her team, and the Blanket Bank, countless bodies wake up warmer on cool winter mornings. Comforted, cosy, and with a good night’s rest behind them. “It’s never been about us doing that work,” Fionna notes. It’s about empowering the people we connect with, uplifting them and giving them confidence. It may be a bad time at the moment, but we can encourage them to keep going.”
The Blanket Bank acts as a gateway, opening the door for deeper discussion into the struggles people are facing. Life-changing conversations come about as a result, as people from all walks of life seek support through a warm blanket, and then a kind hand. Fionna lists “empathy” and “understanding” as essential during initial interactions. “There is so much courage in asking for blankets. It’s not necessarily the people you might think,” she explains. “It’s an opportunity to discover what their housing is like, what their relationship at home is like.” Then, the team puts their citywide connections to work and meet the needs of that individual or family. Those conversations are never easy, yet they are the seed for change.
GOODWILL GAINING MOMENTUM
Fionna notes a 71% increase in requests for blankets in recent years, which she puts down to the initiative’s growing visibility. In 2024, the team received 450 requests and distributed 1110 blankets, up from a previous 312 and 869 in 2023.
The initiative was originally established by the New Brighton Project to provide warm bedding for families in need. As demand soared, a social services-oriented team was determined essential, so it was gifted to the Mission in September 2022, for Fionna and Community Division manager Andrea Wilson Tukaki to spearhead. Today, the team, dedicate themselves to searching for new ways to assist vulnerable communities. “We are always forward-thinking for the needs of the community. Our role is to listen.” The Blanket Bank is a conduit to learn more about how they can help.
Fionna shares the overarching goals of the Mission. “Our Vision: a just and inclusive society in which all people flourish. Our Mission: to promote and enhance the dignity of all people through providing compassionate care, support and empowerment of those most vulnerable in our community; building communities, neighbourhoods and wider society that are fair and inclusive; challenging injustice and working for social transformation.”
Fionna says she couldn’t sum it up any better. “It is a huge reason why I love working for the Methodist Mission. They stay true to these words.” She thrives within the Mission’s team, under exceptional female leadership from Jill Hawkey, and the support from her colleagues.
In our conversation, it becomes clear that giving is at the heart of everything Fionna does. Throughout years of volunteering and relationship-building in communities and causes across the city,

Su rage memorial celebrated
The Kate Sheppard National Memorial to Women’s Suffrage has been entered on the New Zealand Heritage List Rārangi Kōrero as a place of outstanding historical and cultural significance.
The 2.1-metre-high bas-relief sculpture, tucked away behind the Municipal Chambers on Oxford Terrace, depicts a life-sized Kate Sheppard, flanked by five other influential su ragettes. The artwork was created for the 1993 commemorations of New Zealand women gaining the right to vote 100 years earlier.
Its creation was partially funded through a public campaign, which was so successful that there were extra funds which established a Kate Sheppard Memorial award. Artist Margriet Windhausen, South Canterbury, created the memorial, which has Kate in the central spot, flanked by five other notable women campaigners.
They are:
• Meri Te Tai Mangakāhia, of Taitokerau, who requested the vote for women from Te Kotahitanga, the Māori Parliament
• Amey Daldy, foundation member of the Auckland Women’s Christian Temperance Union and president of the Auckland Franchise League
• Ada Wells, of Christchurch, who campaigned vigorously for equal educational opportunities for girls and women
• Harriet Morison, of Dunedin, vice president of the Tailoresses’ Union and a powerful advocate for working women
• Helen Nicol, who pioneered the women’s franchise campaign in Dunedin.
Today, the memorial is a place of gathering and reflection. Each year on Su rage Day, 19 September, the Christchurch Branch of the National Council of Women still hold a celebration commemoration, laying white camellias, the symbol of women’s su rage, at the foot of it.

Where Art and Canterbury Meet
ARTSCENE Colour, form, & bold ab ra ion
Two new exhibitions from visionary arti s Thomas Hancock and Janna van Hasselt explore form and colour – exclusive to view at this leading Chri church gallery from 18 March to 12 April.
Ōtautahi-based, Janna’s exhibition Flop on Pop at PG gallery192 presents porcelain structures that ooze with tactile exuberance. Woven and flowing ceramic paintings glow from walls while more sculptural, glazed forms slump on floating discs of colour. Defying perfection whilst being carefully orchestrated, her luscious pieces push against the expected confines of ceramics.
Invested in materiality, Janna seamlessly displays the nature of clay as a highly fluid and malleable material, giving each piece a life of its own.
The second of two refreshingly inventive artists, Thomas’ exhibition Mass in Flux is a new series of oil paintings that also leans on this notion. Thomas starts by sculpting plasticine shapes, photographing and digitally manipulating them by applying and adjusting colour. Through painterly techniques, the subject is further dislocated from its original context and the forms evolve into tangled, controlled chaos on the canvas.
“I am creating a figurative painting of something that exists, or has existed, and imbuing it with qualities of something abstract or imagined.” Employing his skills in still-life painting, Thomas accentuates light, colour and surface texture, the forms coming alive with dimples, grooves, and wrinkles.

Squash centre stage
The New Zealand Squash Open saw an iconic heritage venue transform into an electrifying sporting arena in early March.
Aworld first at the Isaac Theatre Royal, history was made as the professional squash tournament was played inside the famed theatre, captivating audiences and making headlines nationwide. The event was nothing short of spectacular, Isaac Theatre Royal’s marketing and development manager Bianca Lindstrom explains. “A world-class glass court took centre stage, with fans packing the theatre to witness some of the best players in the sport battle it out under the grand chandelier. The atmosphere was electric, blending the prestige of the arts with the intensity of elite sport.”
The highlight of the tournament? New Zealand’s squash superstar Paul Coll (pictured with Isaac Theatre Royal CEO Greg Ward), securing a thrilling hometown victory. The world No.4 soaked up the moment, surrounded by family, friends, and an ecstatic crowd of 1200.
“It’s been an unreal week,” Paul said. “It’s in my hometown, and I had so many family and friends here, some people who have helped me over my whole career.”
With an incredibly supportive – and huge – crowd, Paul was ecstatic. “To have close friends courtside, family three rows back, it was pretty unreal. I’m so filled with emotion.”
On the women’s side, rising Egyptian star Amina Orfi claimed victory, proving that the tournament was as fierce as it was groundbreaking.
The event’s success sent ripples through the squash and arts communities, with media attention pouring in from across the country, Bianca says. It was a bold move to host a sporting event in a theatre, a decision now widely praised,
with overwhelming feedback from players and fans alike.
Isaac Theatre Royal CEO Greg Ward reflected on the momentous occasion: “This was a true fusion of sport, innovation, and heritage. Seeing the theatre reimagined in such a dynamic way was incredible, and the response has been phenomenal. The energy, the excitement, it was everything we hoped for and more. We can’t wait to welcome the Festival of Squash back next year.”
The Isaac Theatre Royal proves once again that it is more than just a stage for performing arts, it is a platform for visionary experiences. With such resounding success, the question isn’t if squash will return, but how much bigger and better it will be next time.

Navigate employment
Facing employment law issues, or don’t have the time or resources to deal with an issue? If so, it’s time to talk to the experts.
For 30 years now, the team at MGZ Employment Law has been helping Cantabrians solve their employment issues, e ciently and e ectively. The team is experienced and qualified in all aspects of employment law, from initial agreements to dispute resolution. From HR consultants to business owners, they work with all manner of clients, to navigate complex employment law issues, and find solutions that work for each individual business.
“We are here to help,” says director Jane Taylor, adding that MGZ works with clients throughout New Zealand.
Testimonials from clients are full of praise. “Collaborating with MGZ is valuable to me in terms of seeing the things that I might miss. There are not many of them after 20 years in HR, but they see the things I may not know about current case law or a little focus that’s important to keep us safe,” says one HR consultant.
“I also like that they are not rigid in their approach. My experience of other employment lawyers, before them, is they are often a little too focused on the legalese and not so much the humanity.
“That’s not my experience of MGZ. They are skilled at focusing on the key issues, but also flexible enough to work with the needs of the business I work with. They are all a little bit di erent and MGZ is very adaptable to that.”
A testimonial from an international client sums it up like this: “Unlike some corporate law firms used, I find MGZ gives clear guidance on the law and clear, practical, and fast advice.”
One way in which MGZ supports and empowers employers to succeed is via its monthly newsletter The Advocate
“As an employer, it’s important to stay up-to-date on current employment and legal issues that may impact your business,” says Jane.
“The Advocate o ers insight and guidance on a range of topics. You can access recent issues for free on our website, and subscribe to have them delivered straight to your inbox.”

MGZ is more than just a team of lawyers. “We understand that employment relationships are just that, relationships, which can be complex,” says fellow director Dean Kilpatrick. “We can assist by helping you manage those relationships in a way that helps you get the results you need.
“Our team of experienced employment lawyers are here to help you navigate the complexities of employment law, including the Employment Relations Act, the Holidays Act, Parental Leave, Health & Safety, and common law,” Dean adds.
“If you’re an employer, you know the importance of having clear and up-to-date employment agreements in place. These agreements assist both employers and employees, ensuring that everyone is on the same page when it comes to expectations, responsibilities, and rights,” says Jane.
As MGZ has grown, it o ers a wide range of specialist services to help clients. “Whether you’re starting a new business, or negotiating an agreement for an executive appointment or need guidance on dealing with updates to the law, reviews, or the challenges of collective bargaining, we have the expertise and experience to help you,” adds director Nick Mason.
With Nick joining MGZ in 2024, the firm now also o ers immigration services for employers, including accreditation and immigration compliance.

Te Pae won its award for “embedding sustainability into its culture and operations”. The centre’s Director of Human Resources Vanessa McBean says the award reflects the organisation’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.
“That commitment has shaped every decision and is central to every aspect of Te Pae Christchurch’s engagement with its team, from recruitment and training to wellbeing and recognition,” she says.
“With over half of our casual team aged between 16 and 24, we were particularly aware of the importance of our approach to sustainability in attracting and retaining talent.”
Vanessa says commitment has enabled the team to make a meaningful contribution to sustainability through participation in a wide range of initiatives.
“From education and training, which includes an induction course on the organisation’s CSR approach, to the operation of recycling, e-water and dehydrator initiatives, being constantly engaged with our sustainability programme has fostered a strong sense of collective pride across our team.”
“We also engage our community through a range of activities and initiatives that contribute to the broader social and economic development of the region in a sustainable way.”
Autumn finances
MYLEND MORTGAGE ADVISER
OWNER
It’s March and the weather certainly shows that it is already autumn, an ideal time to start looking over your finances.
Get a head start before all those heating bills start creeping in again for the winter. We have lots of tips in this area to help you with all of the fluctuations.
Interest rates are hugely topical at the moment, mostly because they are finally back in the 4s. Pre-Covid times had us comfortably in the mid 4s so hopefully we will be back there again before the year is out.
The OCR lowering keeps the banks honest, and it’s a good reflection that the tougher times with higher interest rates are behind us (for now at least).
It doesn’t mean that you should be complacent with your home lending and repayments. Now is a great time to really get ahead with paying a little extra, as once those rates start dropping, if you keep your repayments the same you will reduce your overall loan term. Great wins.
The other important area to discuss is personal insurances. Do you have appropriate life cover? Perhaps income protection for if you become unwell – how would your home lending be paid if you could not go to work?
No one plans to become unwell, so having a Plan B is really important. Have a look on our website for more information about this.
As always, get in touch directly if you have any questions or thoughts. I am here to help – not judge.

From
fashion & beauty
to retail runway
BY NINA TUCKER
If one thing gets me through the week, it’s knowing that the shows on the international fashion calendar are that little bit closer.
Paris Fashion Week in early March provided all the newness and moments to love, keeping me refreshed and inspired before the Met Gala delivers another dose in May. From beautiful chaos of colour on the runway to bold, ambiguous “fashion for fashion’s sake” street style according to Vogue, a clear synergy emerged from runway to retail. Collections presented a renewed spirit and sense of excitement and originality – a feeling that reflects the shift towards creative dressing we’re seeing more often at home.
On the fabric front, faux fur and leather become the brace against cold weather, while delicate sheer materials steal attention underneath. Silhouettes move with the body, and comfort comes first.
Style icons Kate Moss and Katie Holmes – known to create fashion frenzies and sell out a garment after just one sighting –sported the season-defining butter yellow shade amidst Paris Fashion Week.
Katie wore a lemon Zimmermann jacket and pants to the brand’s Fall 2025 presentation, colour-blocking the set with a chocolate brown bodysuit. Kate playfully sandwiched a billowy butter blouse between black pants and sunglasses to build an e ortlessly chic errand ensemble.
Sarah Burton heralded yellow in her Givenchy debut, while collections from Haider Ackermann’s Tom Ford and Stella McCartney showcased yellow evening gowns.
The melt-in-your-mouth hue was just one of many splashed across shows, presentations, and the streets, with bright reds and greens mingling between favourite autumnal hues such as plum, charcoal, and baby blue.
As these elements continue to trickle into local stores, one thing is sure: Canterbury’s colder weather invites moody dressing days ahead, but we’re not hibernating our bright, colourful pieces yet.

Radiant skin ageat any
Summer may have been a no-show in Canterbury this year, yet according to those in the beauty business, that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.
As any skincare professional will tell you, the sun’s rays are ageing, and skin requires protection from ultraviolet rays year-round –rain or shine.

Passionate about helping mature clients maintain healthy, radiant skin, she carefully selects high-quality products, including the popular Australian brand Avocado Zinc – an all-natural sunscreen and tinted moisturiser designed for superior protection.

At Face & Body Essentials, Lisa is o ering a deluxe facial for $149, which includes a complimentary product valued at $120 – yet availability is limited, so early booking is advised.

The hidden risks of hearing loss
Creeping in at a gradual pace, hearing loss eventually impacts us all – with alarming side effects that can overpower our
‘she’ll be
right’ mindset. So why does the social stigma remain?
An August 2024 report quotes the New Zealand
Audiological Society saying that hearing loss has significant implications for an individual’s social, vocational, educational and functional ability, and their quality of life. Often closely connected with ageing, it becomes a condition people frequently neglect, and perhaps unconsciously shame until they end up on the receiving end themselves.
Studies find depression and anxiety far more prevalent in those with hearing loss, while quality of life significantly decreases for people struggling to hear. Connections are noted between hearing loss and an increased risk of cognitive decline, so listen up: it’s time to take hearing loss seriously.
Hearing loss makes everything harder. From social isolation to an inability to hear alarms, electric vehicles, or warning sirens when crossing the street, untreated hearing loss can throw its victim into a pit of emotional distress. Unfortunately, it’s also something a lot of people feel embarrassed about.
Many su erers experience frustration communicating, especially in noisy, public spaces, and revert to excluding
themselves from the conversation altogether. Subtle speech cues are missed and conversation dynamics change. It feels easier to withdraw from social interaction than frustrating themselves and those around them.
Studies suggest this leads to lowered self-esteem, strained relationships, and cognitive decline such as memory and information processing. According to Hearing New Zealand, those with hearing loss are two to five times more likely to develop dementia.
Hearing loss hints at safety concerns too, through di culty hearing car horns, sirens, footsteps, and other general sounds. In the workplace. Experts notice reduced performance and engagement in those with hearing loss, which can force an early retirement.
Hearing New Zealand puts the overall annual cost of unaddressed hearing loss globally at 750 billion. As March marks Hearing Awareness Month, make your ear and hearing health a priority, or aim to learn sign language to help include those hard of hearing around you. Seek treatment or change today, for a better life in the future.

Nurturing relationships
BY MARGIE FOSTER, Inspire Me Women
Relationships are the heart of life, and like a plant, they need nurturing to thrive.
My husband and I have a few simple, practical ways to keep our relationship strong, and I’d love to share some of these with you.
1. The quarterly reset: A time to pause, reflect, and set goals. We sit down together and map out:
• Personal goals: What we want to achieve individually?
• Professional goals: The direction we are heading in with work.
• Family goals: What do we want to do as a family? Family goals this year are to celebrate everyone’s birthdays with special gatherings, and to plan two family trips. Writing goals down gives them weight, and seeing them on the calendar keeps us accountable.

Used by athletes, bodybuilders, and people who want to lose excess body weight. Ketosis is when the body burns fat and ketones are formed for energy, instead of carbohydrates. Just $39 for 60 capsules.
2. Reignite date night: It’s easy to let slide when life gets busy. We’ve made a conscious e ort to bring it back. Here’s how we do it:
• Fortnightly date night: Every second Tuesday, and non-negotiable.
• Take turns planning: It keeps things fresh and fun.
• Simple, creative ideas: A walk along the beach, game of cards, sharing an ice cream, a casual dinner out. The key is discipline – no matter how tired we are, we commit to showing up for each other.
3. Clarity & communication: Every relationship benefits from clarity. We’ve learned to openly discuss our di erent approaches to life, how we manage our time and handle challenges. Understanding that we can have di erent styles while working towards the same goal has been game-changing. It’s all about respecting individuality while staying connected as a team.
4. Surprises, big & small: Never underestimate the power of a small, thoughtful gesture. The simplest things can make the biggest impact.
A handwritten note, a favourite snack, or an unexpected “just because” gift will brighten someone’s day.
Final Thought: Remember it’s the small, consistent acts of love that keep a relationship alive and thriving.
Putting patients first
In the heart of Merivale lies a world-class imaging service.
Step through its doors and meet a warm, welcoming team of sta and clinicians, masters of their craft at Beyond Radiology. At the core of this team’s values is providing excellence, dignity, and compassion to patients.
Newly appointed Medical Director Dr Jean-François Guite (pictured), joins this established team of caring sta and experienced radiologists, to further build on its reputation as a leading Canterbury imaging facility. Across the region, patients request Beyond Radiology for their imaging needs.
Jean-François is a highly experienced Canadiantrained radiologist specialising in interventional radiology, vascular imaging and general radiology. Throughout his career, his passion has lay within innovation and ongoing mentoring of up-and-coming clinicians.
After moving to New Zealand in 2021 with his wife and children, Jean-François worked throughout the motu (island) until relocating permanently in Christchurch in late 2024.
This decision was born out of a desire to join the Beyond Radiology team. “The ethos and values of putting the patient at the heart of what they do, supported by the world-class imaging facilities and highly skilled and supportive sta ,” resonated
strongly with his own values, Jean-François explains. “I wanted to join and lead the team, and commit to continuing this exceptional patient experience and care to the community of Canterbury.”
It is the imaging service that patients come to this clinic for, yet they return for the service and care. Think state-of-the art imaging: “We o er some of the best image quality available, with a complete suite of modalities including the latest Siemens 3T MRIs with deep resolve AI software, along with the latest CT, ultrasound and X-ray for both diagnostic and interventional procedures.
The latest technology and equipment however, is nothing without the team’s expertise. Experienced radiologists interpret the findings, provide reports to referring clinicians, and perform a range of interventional procedures. With Beyond Radiology’s exponential growth, the team continues to meet demand and grow to a 10-strong team.
With the March opening of its Hamilton clinic, the group’s fourth in all, it is expanding both locally and nationally.

One in six New Zealanders is affected by hearing loss, and many do not seek help. March is World Hearing Awareness Month, so the time to break the stigma is now.
This year’s theme to increase awareness – “Changing mindsets: empower yourself to make ear and hearing care a reality for all,” promotes the importance of taking charge of hearing health. Helping you with the first leap towards better ear care is Bellbird Hearing.
From hearing aid fittings to ear wax removal, Bellbird Hearing o ers a raft of services through its clinics in Christchurch and Timaru. Sessions begin by discussing your hearing concerns with the clinic’s experts, before determining potential treatment options. “Hearing is such an important sense. It’s vital for communication,” says audiologist Melissa Babbage.
An independently owned healthcare provider with a leading team across audiologists, ear nurses, and administration, Bellbird Hearing’s comprehensive hearing tests set them apart from other clinics nationwide.
“Our team is remarkable at troubleshooting and helping clients if they are experiencing issues,” audiologist Caroline Smales states. If clients need a simple fix, Caroline explains the team can often assist immediately – no appointment required.
The team customises solutions to suit each client through hearing tests which include speech and noise testing, meaning the answer is just around the corner.
Melissa highlights that, unfortunately, many New Zealanders are still hesitant to seek support for their hearing health. “Stigma can be a barrier for some individuals,” she explains.
Despite this, hearing technologies continue to advance, o ering incredible improvements in quality of life. While there is still a common association between ageing and hearing decline, these technological advancements make it easier than ever to address and manage hearing health, encouraging
a more positive outlook for the future.
Bellbird Hearing is passionate about getting behind local initiatives, doing presentations at di erent organisations to spread hearing awareness. “We want people to know that support is right here,” Melissa explains.
That’s not all – building trusted relationships is another cornerstone. Giving honest, expert advice about the various treatments and outcomes, appointments are never rushed –instead making clients feel comfortable and trusting in their hearing care professional.
Meet the team who find value and satisfaction in helping people hear better. Book in at the Christchurch 03 351 1172 or Timaru 03 683 1545 clinic today.

Some like it HOT
BY IAN KNOTT
Chillies feature in almost every global cuisine, some more than others, although they’re not everyone’s idea of an enjoyable culinary experience.
The heat of chillies is a subjective thing to the individual. Many find a relatively mild jalapeño (2000 Scoville Heat Units) or Tabasco sauce unbearably spicy, whereas others won’t blink at a Carolina Reaper at the other end of the spectrum (1.5 million SHU). Science suggests that some people are born with fewer of the receptors that sense capsaicin, the chemical that gives chillies their heat. Psychological and cultural influences also play a large part.
It is becoming increasingly popular to grow your own chillies, and even experiment with cross pollination of di erent types. Chilli plants are quite easy-care and just need protection from pests that will readily strip the leaves. Whether you love the adrenaline rush of the burn, or prefer to give them a wide berth, there are some chilli basics that everyone should be aware of to avoid any nasty surprises. Below are some handy tips.
Chilli basics
• Wear gloves or wash your hands thoroughly when handling chillies.
• Remove seeds and membranes if less heat is required.
• Drink milk or something acidic like lemonade or orange juice to help neutralise capsaicin.
• Wash utensils and cutting boards well to avoid contamination of other foods.
Chilli A
Con Carne
popular go-to meal, Chilli Con Carne is believed to have originated in San Antonio, Texas, at the beginning of the 19th century.
Ingredients include meat (usually beef), chilli peppers, tomatoes, corn, and often pinto or kidney beans. Seasonings may include garlic, onions, and cumin.
The types of meat and other ingredients used vary based on geographic and personal tastes, while the spiciness is adjusted using various peppers such as hatch, jalapeño, serrano, and habanero.
INGREDIENTS
• 250g beef mince
• 4 Tsp oil
• 1 small onion, peeled and diced
• 3 garlic cloves, crushed
• 2 Tbsp sweet chilli sauce, or a pinch of chilli
• 1 can pinto, lime, or chilli beans
• 2 Tbsp tomato paste
• 1/2 cup water, or red wine/beef stock
• 2 cups seasonal vegetables, finely chopped

1. Heat oil in a saucepan. Add onion and garlic. Cook for 2–3 minutes or until onion is golden.
2. Add mince and continue cooking until mince is browned and no longer in clumps.
3. Add chilli sauce or chilli powder, baked beans, tomato paste and water (or wine or beef stock). Cook over a gentle heat for 10 minutes.
4. Add vegetables and extra water if necessary, and cook for a further 10 to 20 minutes. Check seasoning, and adjust to taste.
5. Garnish with your choice of toppings (tomato salsa, sour cream, grated cheese, chopped herbs), and serve with tortilla chips, fresh crackers, or crusty French bread.
TOP TIP
Use ground beef with a higher fat content. Fat equals flavour, so 80% to 85% lean ground beef are good choices for chilli.

Where co ee meets community
As one of New Zealand’s most popular beverages, coffee is a driving force behind hundreds of hospitality venues across the country. With so much choice, how do you decide where to go for your caffeine fix?
Since established in 2023, The Co ee Club Ravenswood, has welcomed thousands of customers through its doors. Located in Ravenswood Central, this is more than just a café – it’s a community. “We classify ourselves as a café, a local meeting spot to share a laugh over a meal with family and friends,” says branch owner Sukhvir Singh. “The availability and options across the board separate us from other brands.”
Space is never an issue, with capacity for 100 people. Customers are guaranteed to be well catered to, comfortably and e ciently. An option for 90-person events hosted after-hours make it a prime location for group events and celebrations.
Helping extend its customer base, The Co ee Club Ravenswood holds quarterly promotions, its Bisco range having launched this month, alongside loaded croissants. Prior to this was a Strawberry matcha latte promotion, which became popular among the younger demographic, although its VIP membership appeals to all.
Valuing community, the franchise raises important funds annually in charity donations. “We recently sponsored a family Christmas event with a turnout of over 60 children in two hours,” Sukhvir says.
This Ravenswood location has quickly become a go-to for regular co ee drinkers, so why not make it yours?

Open shelves: Allow you to line up baskets and jars of dry goods and to display plates, cups, and assorted tableware. Drawers keep smaller items sorted, and a countertop can be used for storage or as surface space if needed.
Simple shelving: A single, vertical built-in bookshelf style walk-in pantry works well for storing essentials. Use clear, airtight jars for favourite herbs, spices, pastas, baking ingredients and the like. Shelves also work well for baking ingredients, cookbooks and occasionally used items, such as a food processor.
Walk-in storage: A walk-in pantry may easily be used to store wine, and glasses with a built-in rack and stemware holder. Floor to ceiling shelving means plenty of room for tinned and dry goods, and baskets for fruit and vegetables. Consider also installing slide-out drawers, corner storage units, rotating turntables for spices, sauces, and condiments, and drawers within drawers.
Butler’s pantry: Consider a proper Butler’s Pantry, with sink, countertop, dishwasher, and fridge. Ideal for those who entertain regularly, it can incorporate all the shelves, baskets, jars and kitchenware necessary to keep your main cooking area clean and uncluttered.

One of life’s luxuries is having a walk-in wardrobe, or as some refer to them, a dressing room.
As the name suggests, this wardrobe is typically large enough to walk into; an entire room dedicated to storing clothes, shoes, and accessories. Often it is also fitted out for dressing in, with proper lighting, full-length mirrors and a makeup table.
A walk-in wardrobe usually includes various storage options such as shelves, drawers, hanging rails, a dressing table or island. Benefits include ample storage space, easy organisation of and access to all your clothes and accessories.
That means no need for drawers and dressing tables in your bedroom, making it a clutter-free zone. Remember, a clean and tidy bedroom can
have a significant impact on your mental health.
Research has shown that cluttered and messy can contribute to feelings of stress and anxiety, whereas clean and organised can promote feelings of calm and relaxation.
Being organised may also help you to make better fashion choices. Easily seeing what’s in your wardrobe and how you can coordinate items into stylish outfits will help boost confidence, and ensure you avoid buying double-ups.
A fitted or built-in wardrobe organiser will help achieve the same e ect in a smaller space, and, if the area is large enough, you may be able to slide in a compact tallboy.

From organising cleaners, and gardeners, to project managing renovations, they deliver a premium service for all clients. Natarsha Crawford and Susan Mullink (pictured), are Raine & Horne Northwood (formerly Mike Pero Northwood).
Putting clients’ interests first has produced consistent results for clients, and five-star reviews for Natarsha and Susan. “We provide extraordinary and unmatched services for uncompromising
clients,” explains Natarsha. “We believe in excellence, and that’s exactly what we deliver,” adds Susan.
The service includes doing everything possible to ensure potential buyers gain the best first impressions, and providing them with all the relevant property information so they can make informed decisions quickly. After a sale, they make sure there are no hiccups to derail it.
“We do things that other agents don’t,” says Natarsha. “We only use the best
photos to make sure each property looks its best when buyers see it online. We tell our vendors what they should or shouldn’t do before going to the market. Sometimes doing certain work is not going to add any value to the property,” Susan adds. They pride themselves on doing their homework, creating ‘fast facts’ information sheets to ensure purchasers see value in the homes. If you want extraordinary sevice, call them today.

Now, Mazda have added a new entry point to the CX-60 range. Called the SP Hybrid, it sits at $69,990 and sports plenty of niceties inside and out.
Starting with the outside, Mazda’s latest Kodo design language is out in force. I love this premium-looking stance, something that Mazda calls “noble toughness”.
The SP Hybrid o ers LED headlights, blacked out 20-inch alloys, black gloss wing mirrors, and a new honeycomb front grill. Inside, find electric heated front seats with leather trim, 360-degree rear camera, power tailgate, and plenty of quality-feeling switchgear and other materials. It’s a delightful cabin to be in and the driving position is pretty much spot on.
The engineering meat on the CX-60 SP Hybrid’s bones is a 3.3L turbocharged straight-six e-Skyactiv G petrol unit coupled with a 48V Mild Hybrid System with M Hybrid Boost. Power sits at a decent 209kW and torque at 450Nm, both of which are sent through Mazda’s i-Activ AllWheel-Drive system and an eight speed automatic transmission.
From the moment you give even a fraction of input from your right shoe, the get-go is obvious. The 3.3L turbocharged six cylinder is a honey of an engine. Silky smooth is a terrible cliché at the best of times, yet that is just what the six pot is when you put the power down.
The addition of that 48v Mild Hybrid set up also means you have extra electric boost to aid in forward momentum and spooling up torque much lower down in the rev range.
Along with a very slick 8-speed auto box and its relatively compact dimensions, the CX-60 SP Hybrid exhibits performance characteristics which wouldn’t feel out of place in the mildest of performance hatchbacks. Sure, you won’t corner flat if you chuck it into a bend with carefree abandon, although it is lively and rather enjoyable, especially if you dial it up to 11 with a switch over to Sport mode.
For daily use, the SP Hybrid also fares well with little to no influence from the outside world’s noises and a supple yet comfortable ride, not to mention decent all-round visibility. Mazda are certainly onto a winner with the CX-60 and the SP Hybrid is the value packed and highly entertaining to drive entry point into this club.

Airport’s new electric fire truck
Christchurch Airport has New Zealand’s first electric fire truck.
The vehicle (pictured) is part of the airport’s broader fleet transition programme to have a zero-emission fleet by 2035. Airport chief executive
Justin Watson says the addition of the Rosenbauer RT ensures the airport’s emergency response teams have cutting-edge equipment to keep the airport community safe.
He adds that the airport has signed a deal with Rosenbauer to take delivery of a second, larger e-Panther electric fire truck in 2026. The e-Panther is a world-class firefighting vehicle, o ering increased levels of performance and capability, ensuring the airport remains at the forefront of emergency response innovation.
The RT fire truck will serve as the airport’s primary first-response vehicle, replacing the existing diesel truck that handles most emergency call outs across the airport campus. While the RT is a 100% EV, it has a small back up range extender generator that can top up the batteries in exceptional circumstances, ensuring continuous operations, even in prolonged emergency situations.
Peter Moore, Christchurch Airport Fire Chief, says the new vehicle enhances emergency response capability.“This truck is a game changer. It’s fast, highly manoeuvrable, and packed with innovative technology that makes our response times even more e ective.
“Our teams have undertaken intensive training with Rosenbauer experts from Austria, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. This is the future of airport firefighting, and we’re proud to be leading the charge.”

Behind the Scenes
Autumn seems to have well and truly landed here in North Canterbury. It might mean chillier temperatures but it’s a beautiful time of year with all those misty morning and glowing evening skies. It’s also a great time to get out, and about and enjoy all our region has to offer.
This month we look at the wonderful gardens at Pegasus Bay Winery. The gardens started as a bare paddock nearly 30 years ago and they have recently been recognised as a Garden of Significance. What a great spot to enjoy some garden inspiration and a glass of wine.
Elsewhere in this month’s magazine, our writer Amelia, talks to a North Canterbury mother about her fostering journey. We find out what got her started fostering and how it has added to family life.
We also bring you local business updates – from businesses moving on, merging and evolving.
On our fashion page Dorothy showcases some of the gorgeous, locally available items in our high street stores.
Last but not least, check out our local snippets for recipes, coffee spots and the chance to enter a pretty cool giveaway.

Changes in Cust
For over ten years, Yvonne Frost ran both Querky Style and Roses at Cust. During that time she also ran a lifestyle block with husband, Andrew, and raised three children. As with many owner run businesses, these stores took long hours and a lot of dedication yet brought many positives –including many lovely customers. As with most things, life moved on and shortly after their children left home they took time to take stock.
“What are we doing we thought,” questioned Yvonne. “Our life was full of work, a couple of businesses and two lifestyle blocks. We set a plan in place and began selling down to achieve freedom to pursue other adventures.”
The decision to sell however, has not been taken lightly. Yvonne says she did try to sell the lifestyle block with the business as a going concern. Buyers were not forthcoming, so the decision was made to close Querky Style, whilst Alannah will continue to run Roses at Cust from 224 Main Race Road, West Eyreton.
“We want to go and live a simple life,” says Yvonne. For now, the couple are unsure what that will be, but they’re excited about the opportunities.
MOMAC
Two of Canterbury’s best creative agencies, Create Design and MoMac, have now joined forces. Laura Good, former owner and operator of Create Design Studio, has been appointed the Creative Director role at MoMac and the entire team at Create now joins MoMac under the new acquisition.
“To see it being handed over to someone who is just as excited and enthusiastic as myself, gave me confidence and made the whole process easier,” says Laura. MoMac founder, Ryan McDonald, is enthusiastic about combining the two marketing agencies. “The positive feedback we have received is humbling and already you can really feel the synergies of the two teams coming together to form the ultimate marketing agency,” he says. “We are both excited for the future and will continue to provide the same great service we always have.”

A significant garden
Back in the mid-1990s the gardens, at what is now Pegasus Bay Winery, were a bare paddock says Marketing Manager, Ed Donaldson. “Initially it was just mum (Chris) planning the garden,” he recalls. “It’s been a lifelong, labour of love for her, creating the garden.”
Fast-forward and that garden has recently been recognised as a Garden of Significance by the New Zealand Garden Trust. Enjoying the gardens has become an increasingly important part of a visit to Pegasus Bay Winery, Ed explains. “The gardens have become more and more of a drawcard and now with the deli offering, people can get a picnic in the deli and head out and enjoy the outside areas.”
There are approximately 15 acres of garden with sweeping lawns, picturesque walkways, water features, and plantings of all types and textures – from natives to roses, herbs to rhododendrons. The gardens are magnificent overall but highlights include the collection of rare conifers and some skilled cloud pruning, plus the distinctive red Japanese-style bridges. And the eel feeding is always popular says Ed.
“The Garden of Significance came out of the blue,” says Chris Donaldson. “It has not been a long-term goal but came as a very pleasant surprise. We work hard to keep the garden looking good with frequent goals to improve a neglected area or create a new one.”
As the gardens have grown, working on them has become a team effort. Chris is assisted by co-gardener Paula Kelly and a regular helper Nicky. When it comes to professional advice they also turn to Greg Bloomer –“he must have been destined with a name like that,” says Chris.
Chris’ favourite spots in the garden include the laburnum walk and the biodiversity trail. While Paula has a “soft spot for the dahlias and flower beds”, her highlight is seeing visitors to the winery, enjoying the gardens and relaxing.
“We are spoilt with compliments from our Kiwi and international visitors,” says Paula. “However, being critiqued by the prestigious judges from the New Zealand Gardens Trust was quite daunting.”
The gardens are designed to delight all year round, but autumn is a wonderful time to visit. With plenty of deciduous trees, it becomes a rich tapestry of reds and golds.
“We manage to keep things under control and we’re always adding to established areas,” says Chris. “We all love the place.”
This month we’ve teamed up with the generous team at Pegasus Bay Winery to bring you a wonderful giveaway. Check out the full details on page 82.

Fostering Love
WORDS: AMELIA NORMAN | IMAGES: LIBBY ELLMERS PHOTOGRAPHY
Cath runs a busy home. With three children, a dog, hobbies, sports, work and an endless to-do list, there’s room for little else. Yet, extraordinarily, Cath and her husband Miles have found not only the time but also the space in their hearts to welcome 11 foster babies into their North Canterbury home over the last seven years.
“There is still room for love and care in our family,” explains Cath, who first explored the idea of fostering when looking to grow her family of four. “When we were unable to have more of our own children, I looked into permanent fostering.”
“Through this process we welcomed our daughter, Matilda, in 2012.”
Whilst Matilda was the perfect, much-loved addition the family were seeking, the value of fostering stuck with Cath.
“Often in the news we see these horrific stories of child abuse or neglect and it’s got to the point where we all just turn the page or change the channel because it hurts too much. I didn’t want to turn the page on these stories. I wanted to make a difference.”
And so, since 2018, the family has welcomed babies – some just hours old - into their home for anywhere from a few nights, up to 18 months at a time. Some come detoxing from addictions passed to them in the womb; others have severe attachment issues or are simply in need of a safe haven.
“For me, fostering is about making a difference in one small child’s life. If we can help those children know a loving, calm and stable home – even for the short time they’re with us – there’s value in that.”
“There’s often a lot of work needed to teach them how to form a safe attachment,” explains Cath. “You really have to create the space to form that bond.”
“People often say, ‘I couldn’t do it. I’d get too attached. You’re so brave.’ But I’m not brave. I do it knowing that I’m going to form an attachment and face heartbreak when I have to say goodbye. But those children need you far more than we, as foster parents, need to protect our feelings. It’s a choice I’ve made to put my pain aside to help that child, as that’s more important.”

Cath and Miles’ dedication to fostering has recently been recognised with the presentation of an Excellence in Foster Care Award at Government House; an accolade given to just 10 foster carers or couples in New Zealand each year.
While absolutely thrilled to be nominated and selected by the judges, Cath says the award belongs to their wider support network as much as to them.
“We have this incredible network of foster carers and we all support each other. There’s a Māori saying, ‘Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, he toa takitini kē’ – ‘my success is not mine alone, but is the strength of many’. To me, that’s what this award is all about.”

All about eyes
Words: Dr Peter Aspell
The eyes are usually the first feature we notice when we look at each other or ourselves in the mirror.
The most common complaint I get from my patients is looking tired and this often refers to the darkened hollows/bags under the eyes that we all develop overtime. This can, of course, be exacerbated by stress and poor sleep but it’s also the inevitable result of ageing. This happens because the lower eyelid skin gets thinner, it sags and the bony skeleton around the eyes changes shape and the small plump pockets of fat under the skin breakdown overtime. The overall appearance changes from small and smooth to hollow and droopy.
Until a few years ago the only option to treat this was surgery, which although effective can be risky and involve significant cost and recovery time. Dermal fillers, which breakdown naturally over a year or so have become a much more popular and practical way to address this extremely common problem safely and with pretty immediate results.
Not every patient is suitable for tear trough fillers alone but a simple test you can try in the mirror is gently press your fingertips against the cheekbones just below your eye bags and see if that gives them a bit of improvement. If so then you’ll likely be a good candidate. For some people, treating the cheekbones and temples with a bit of filler first is a better idea but a good cosmetic doctor will be able to talk you through this.
I really enjoy treating tear troughs because the result is an instant freshening of the eyes and the treatment takes less than an hour, is painless and costs a fraction of what surgery costs.
All treatments start with a thorough consultation and discussion around the best way to achieve a freshened and more youthful result - unlike lip fillers, which some patients like to look exaggerated and overfilled, under eye treatments always aim to look subtle. The goal is simply to look refreshed and well rested. It’s rare for anyone to know it’s been treated which is great as most patients value their privacy. Dental anxiety
We may all joke about the horrors of having things done to our teeth, but the reality is many of us really do experience dental anxiety. It’s often what makes us put off those routine visits, even though the best way to keep teeth and gums healthy is with regular visits to the dental hygienist.
It’s something the team at Smooch Dental Spa are well aware of. Smooch Clinical Director and co-owner, Lisa Meredith, sees many people who have been nervous about visiting.
“Around 70% of the patients we see have some level of dental anxiety,” says Lisa. “This anxiety often stems from previous negative experiences or a general fear of medical procedures. We understand these feelings and take them very seriously.”
To help patients feel more at ease, Lisa and her team employ several calming techniques. “We make sure to be understanding and non-judgemental,” she explains.
“We take the time to explain each procedure clearly, be gentle in our approach, and never rush through appointments. This helps build trust and makes the experience much more comfortable for our patients.”
Smooch has designed their dental hygiene services with a gentle approach at the forefront. They offer ‘Look See’ appointments to help the very nervous feel comfortable—a 15-minute free appointment with no treatment involved. It gives patients a chance to meet the the team, see the treatment room and the equipment, and ask any questions that may be bothering them.
Durham Health Cosmetic Clinic offers a range of cosmetic treatments to refresh and revitalise your appearance.
The Smooch premises are a relaxing, spa-like setting designed to put people at ease. The team is super friendly, and they use the latest technology known as Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) to provide a cleaner, faster, and gentler scale and polish. Traditionally, at-home brushing and teeth cleaning methods typically eliminate only about 50% of plaque (known in the dental world as biofilm). However, with Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT), the highly experienced Smooch dental hygienists make biofilm visible and ensure its complete removal, promoting a healthier mouth and body in the gentlest way.
A revitalised you is only a consultation away. All treatments carried out by highly experienced Dr Peter Aspell.
“GBT is more gentle because it uses a combination of air, warm water, and a fine powder to remove biofilm with minimal traditional scraping,” Lisa explains. “This method is not only more comfortable for patients but also more effective in maintaining oral health.”

As local MP I am of course a big advocate of the Waimakariri and I enjoy promoting the area to visitors. So I was excited to hear that the Oxford Forest Conservation area has recently been certified as New Zealand’s newest Dark Sky Park.
We all know how beautiful our skies are, especially in rural areas like Oxford, but we often take this for granted, which is why I am proud of the work which has been undertaken by all those involved in Oxford’s Dark Sky project.
Visitors I have met from places like the UK are amazed by our night skies and it’s something we should be harnessing more as a drawcard for tourists. This is just one more thing to put Waimakariri on the map for both international and domestic tourism.
I am a frequent visitor to schools around the electorate and I feel sure those I have spoken to recently will be happy with the Government’s recent action in the education sphere. As well as banning

Building this vital infrastructure signals our Government’s focus on prioritising investments that reduce travel times, increase productivity – and in this case vastly improve safety for the longsuffering residents of Woodend.

If you can get your hands on some homegrown peaches, try this Grilled Peach Caprese Salad. Preheat a grilled pan to medium. Slice peaches about 1/2 inch thick and brush or spray with olive oil. Place on the grill and cook undisturbed until grill lines appear, about 2-4 minutes and then flip over and repeat. Remove from grill. Slice some fresh buffalo mozzarella 1/4 inch thick. Arrange salad on a plate, add some basil leaves and drizzle with balsamic reduction then sprinkle with sea salt.
