Welcome to

WOODLANDS GOLF CLUB Woodlands Golf Club is a traditional championship golf course with challenging small greens and is located in the heart of Mordialloc, a pleasant 30-minute drive from the City around picturesque Port Phillip Bay. It sits within the famous Sandbelt corridor, and commands a high level of respect amongst the golfing community. Woodlands is considered to be

among the top five golf courses in Melbourne and was rated No.14 in the country in Golf Australia’s most recent rankings.

The Club is steeped in tradition and celebrated its centenary in 2013, its

100 years spent in one location on the same idyllic stretch of land making it the oldest course in the Melbourne Sandbelt to still occupy its original site.

Despite embarking on its second century, Woodlands remains an

undiscovered gem to many. The course is visually stunning, immaculately presented and makes a lasting impression on those who visit.

Members enjoy a full programme of competitions, together with some exceptional off-course facilities to be found in the recently refurbished Club House.

The Club House with its versatile function rooms can cater for an intimate sit down dinner of 20 up to 280 guests, a stand up cocktail party for 350 guests, a business

seminar or conference all in climate controlled comfort of the traditional yet modern setting, supported by state of the art AV equipment, first class service and fine

dining. With sweeping views from all rooms of our meticulously manicured

course, Woodlands is the ideal location for your next special event, seminar or board meeting.

At Woodlands the total focus revolves around making your every visit as enjoyable and rewarding as possible. The entire Club is managed according to four essential criteria that shape the very culture and

the service provided: does it enhance the level of courtesy, comfort,

convenience and camaraderie experienced by our members and guests.

5

A Brief History Woodlands Golf Club owes its existence to a schoolteacher, George Rogers, who took a liking to the land where the course now lies during one visit to Epsom Racecourse in 1912. He approached the landowner and after some negotiation over afternoon tea was granted permission to play golf over what was the Mayfield Estate.

A motion was passed on 17 July 1913, formalising the Club name

of Mordialloc Golf Club, and limiting its membership to fifty. An early

Melbourne professional, Richard Banks, was contacted to lay out nine holes in readiness for Opening Day on 6 September 1913.

Mayfield’s parkland environment included heavily-treed sections; fairways comprised of various natural grass species and were sufficiently uneven to require constant rolling.

Cattle and sheep grazed over Mayfield, wreaking havoc to its fairways and greens. Caddies spent much of their time diverting sheep away from the manure-scented greens before wire fences were erected.

The initial agreement with trustees prohibited traditional sand bunkers. Instead, one-metre high wire-netting hurdles were erected and positioned across the fairways.

6

woodlandsgolf.com.au

By 1917, the Club was anxious to upgrade its layout to 18 holes. Club professional, Sam Bennett, laid out the new nine within a month.

In 1921, the Club became serious about its bunkering and enlisted the advice of

one Mr Plant, who had developed a reputation as a bunker expert. The planting of hundreds of native trees also took place in this landmark year.

When Mordialloc Golf Club became a company in 1925, the Club embraced the opportunity for a name change. One early suggestion – “Braeburn” –

gathered much support among the membership, but “Woodlands” – giving due acknowledgement to its parkland setting – was adopted.

In the mid-1920s English golf architect, J.D.H. Scott, came to Australia and his advice was sought regarding course bunkering and the potential for some new holes.

the fire amounted to the same budgeted upgrade figure. With the Club House issue sorted, one of the most progressive steps in Woodlands’ short

history occurred in 1929 – the year its fairways were ploughed up and sown with couch grass. In 1933 representatives of the Fonseca Estate informed the Club they were prepared to sell it the land for 11,000 pounds (more than $2 million at today’s prices) – equating to nearly seventy pounds per acre. A sound offer, the Club agreed.

Being awarded the 1934 Victorian Amateur Championship was evidence of the esteem

that the Woodlands layout was held in. To rise up in the relatively short time-span of 21

years from “golfing in the paddocks” to hosting the State Championship was a magnificent achievement. Today, Woodlands is one of Australia’s leading golf courses and, quite possibly, the most under-rated.

Vigorous debate took place on how to best accommodate Woodlands’ expanding

The achievements of three members, however, dwarf all others, namely those of Margaret Masters, Stephen Allan and Nathan Holman. Joining Woodlands as a junior, Masters won the first of nine Women’s championships in 12 years in 1952, aged just 19. Five Victorian Amateur Championships were annexed, along with the Australian, New Zealand, South African and Canadian Championships.

Masters was the first Australian woman to turn professional and compete in America, where she enjoyed considerable success. She lives in Arizona.

Diminutive in stature and coined The Baby Face Assassin by the press, Stephen Allan’s

career highlight is victory in the 2002 Australian Open at Victoria Golf Club. He, too, proudly represented Woodlands in local pennant, played for Victoria and was twice Club Champion (1991 and 1994). Based in Arizona, Allan has been a regular member of the US Tour.

More recently, Holman turned professional after a stellar career as an amateur winning numerous events and representing Victoria and Australia as one of the world’s leading amateur golfers.

Woodlands has not only produced champions, it has hosted numerous championships,

including the Victorian Open Championship eight times and the equivalent event for women twice. Three times running in recent years it has been a co-host of the Australian Amateur Championship. There have been some famous winners of these events too, such as

Australia’s Robert Allenby and Lanny Wadkins, who went on to become a Major champion and represent the United States on eight occasions in the Ryder Cup.

The Course It has often been said that if you play well at Woodlands you can play well anywhere, and there are a great many who will attest to this assessment. Those who know the difference instantly appreciate the superb layout and design that gives Woodlands its own distinctive character. Established in 1913 and the only course in Melbourne’s famous ‘Sandbelt’ still to occupy its original site, the vision of its founders has seen the creation of a timeless golfing classic.

A unique blend of beguiling, elevated greens that are small, firm, and fast, married with several of what are unquestionably some of Australia’s most demanding short par 4s, creates a strategically demanding course that

places a premium on shot selection and ball control. Acknowledged by

touring professionals as among the finest courses in the country, Woodlands is in total harmony with its environment, where fairways are lined with

300-year-old River Red Gums and Coastal Manna Gums whose roots took

hold long before Captain Cook walked upon our shores. Woodlands is indeed proud of its heritage.

The meandering fairways and naturally shaped bunkers are much-admired

features, with the influence of the legendary Scot, Dr. Alister MacKenzie, clearly apparent. Mick Morcom, former Course Curator at Royal Melbourne Golf Club and supervisor of its construction according to Dr. MacKenzie’s design, was

Practice Facilities There can be few things more frustrating than not doing oneself justice having been given the opportunity to play at one of Australia’s top golf courses. Fortunately, if your golf game is not in quite the shape you would like, Woodlands has a very capable team of professionals who are on hand to offer instruction and advice. Quality tuition, though, is nothing without the facilities to be able to work on newly-acquired skills and ingrain them so that they become second nature. Fortunately, Woodlands is blessed with excellent practice facilities, as you might expect seeing the good golfers to have emerged from the Club over the years. If you walk across the 1st and 9th fairway you will find the practice fairway, which is the perfect place to work on the long game. Buckets of balls may be hired from the Pro Shop. A sharp short game is essential to score well around Woodlands and there is little better feeling in the game than consistently saving shots around the green that others fritter away. Immediately in front of the Club House adjacent to the 1st fairway can be found a practice putting green whose surface mirrors the excellent quality of those to be found out on the course. There is another green/bunker area adjacent to the 9th green and 10th tee and another putting/ chipping green at the northern end of the Club House. For those short of time there are also practice nets to have a quick hit before heading to the first tee.

Becoming a Member It is true we have a great course. It is also true that we have an even greater Club. One visit and you will appreciate why together they represent such a rare and alluring proposition.

Members are drawn as much by the genuine fellowship that envelops the Club - that essential element that complements the golfing experience as they are the reputation of the course.

Having a good course, though, undoubtedly helps. Many of those lucky

enough to have played here instantly gain an affection for the place - the beautifully manicured fairways, the feelings of being one with nature, it just feels a perfect fit.

This attraction does not dim over time and it is the people who share this affinity who we would welcome as potential new members.

To join Woodlands, a Proposer and Seconder are generally required, plus two referees, one of whom must be a member of the Club.

However, if a candidate does not know a Woodlands Member he/

she should contact the Club, who will then endeavour to facilitate the application accordingly.

Members’ Golf For those in search of competitive golf, Woodlands represents an excellent choice of club, with league fixtures, many trophies to battle for each year in the Club’s own prestigious competitions and much social golf on offer.

Men, women and colts (under-24) all have a full programme of golf and enter teams in their respective pennant competitions.

Pennant is the pinnacle of inter-club golf in Victoria, with a history

stretching back more than a century. Teams enjoy competition across an eight-week season that starts in March and culminates in a grand final where the all-important pennant is the prize.

Woodlands has a proud history in Golf Victoria Metropolitan pennant

competitions. The Club’s first GV Division 1 flag was won in 1979 then during the 1990s, Woodlands won GV Division 1 flags in 1995, 1996, 1998 and 1999. Woodlands has also had success with our Under 24

Colts team, winning the Division 1 flag in 1997 and 2000. The Ladies

have won Section 1 flags in 1962, 1988, 1990 and 1999 with 10 other flags in Sections 2-5.

with a good selection of competitions run against handicap meaning that everyone has a chance to get their hands on some silverware.

The most important events for all sections of the Club - men, women, juniors and seniors

- are their respective Club Championships. It is not an honour bestowed lightly nor earned cheaply. The men, for instance, initially compete over 54 holes with the aim of recording one of the top four scratch scores.

That, however, is only half the battle. An 18-hole semi-final and 36-hole final are the two remaining hurdles separating the Club Champion from his trophy.

Men’s competitions are played on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. A medal is traditionally

played for on the first Saturday of the month with an annual event to determine the Medallist of the Year. Women’s competition days are Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

The golf is never dull and there always seems to be an

innovative event on the horizon to sharpen up your golf

game for. Such as the Woodlands GC v’s Victoria GC Match, where Woodlands sends a contingent of players to Victoria and vice versa. A similar inter-club exchange takes place with Huntingdale and Spring Valley.

Woodlands’ women members are a valued part of the Club, who as well as enjoying their own host of competitions

have been tireless workers in raising money for charity with events such as a Pink Day for Breast Cancer Awareness. The women have their own dedicated and hard-working

council to represent their interests and look after the day

to day running of their section. The spread of ages is also something to behold, with talented juniors coming up

through the ranks a source of inspiration to many, not least the nine female members who are in their sixth decade of calling Woodlands their home Club.

There is also much social golf on offer at Woodlands, with groups going out most days. After all, why wouldn’t you want to play our majestic course at every opportunity?

Juniors If you are an aspiring junior golfer in search of a club and a course to match your ambitions look no further than Woodlands.

The Club has a proud history of developing junior golfers and many have moved up into the professional ranks, most notably Steve Allan, Nathan

Holman and Brad Lamb and, some years before them, Margaret Masters, who was the first Australian woman to turn professional and compete in America, where she enjoyed considerable success.

This tradition of Junior excellence continues right up to the present day

with the likes of Nathan Holman and Julienne Soo. Nathan, before turning professional, captained Victoria and was the leading amateur at the 2013 Victoria Open. He now carries a full time card on the Asian Tour and makes occasional European Tour appearances.

the Victorian Girls Championship after finishing runner-up the year before. She recently college golf for the University of Oklahoma.

Woodlands has a tried and tested structure in place to develop junior golfers. The Junior Rookie Squad is designed for new juniors. Here they learn the different

components of the golf game and improve their skills by playing games that are designed to make golf fun, simple and easy to remember. As they improve they progress to the Junior Development Squad.

The Junior Development Squad program is designed to develop and grow the child’s golf

golf course. The main focus is to improve their techniques with every area of the game: From here as their skills improve and reach a level where they can play on the course

without supervision they will be encouraged to join as a Sub-Junior member. As a Sub-

Junior once they demonstrate an understanding of the rules, etiquette (pace of play, care of the course and behaviour) they will be invited to apply as a Junior Member.

Information for Visitors Woodlands is a Club that exists for its members, but that does not preclude visitors from enjoying the ultimate golfing experience. We are delighted to showcase our magnificent course to a wider audience and visitors are not only welcome to play at Woodlands, they are encouraged.

There are several ways you can play Woodlands as a non-member. Two of these are as an invitee to one of our corporate golf days or as the invited guest of a member.

Membership brings with it many privileges, one of which is to be able to invite others

to play the course, the same person no more than six times in the same financial year. So a friend who belongs to Woodlands Golf Club is a good friend indeed and someone whose acquaintance you should treasure!

The third way is by introduction. Guests upon written application to the General

Manager, specifying club membership and golf handicap, have the opportunity to play at Woodlands Golf Club.

These are the days when visitors are permitted, all are subject to availability of the course: Monday - afternoon Tuesday - all day

Wednesday - afternoon Thursday - morning Friday - all day

Weekends and Public Holidays - all day

Clubhouse & Catering The Club’s ambience creates an idyllic venue away from the stress and demands of the daily working environment. Set in manicured gardens, the Clubhouse was built in 1927 and has been enlarged and modernised while retaining its original charm and atmosphere.

Social Activities Membership of Woodlands Golf Club is about so much more than being able to enjoy daily play on one of Australia’s most visually stunning golf courses.

There is a special rapport among the members that can be

felt as soon as you enter the Club House and the après-golf

experience is treasured almost as much as the playing of the 18 holes that precedes it.

An extensive and varied programme of social events is

organised throughout the year, with the aim being that there should be something to appeal to most tastes.

The Club is typically one that schedules a range of social functions with some of the feature events including the

Children’s Christmas Party held on the 18th hole that attracts nearly 200 children plus parents and grandparents.

From late spring until early autumn there is a program of

events know as 9 & Dines in which members and guests play nine holes before enjoying a casual dinner.

Other events to have featured in the social calendar have

included a wine dinner with accompanying five-course meal, night golf followed by a meal and entertainment, and a rock and roll night.
