Tianguis Turistico Puerto Vallarta shines! Tianguis in spanish means market and the largest travel and tourism market in Mexico was held in Puerto Vallarta for the first time outside of Acapulco in more than 30 years. By all accounts the event was a huge success with incresed exhibitors and attendees. I know our days were packed with events and meetings! Where is a Canadian supposed to retire? By Aaron Fisher
With US law indicating you cannot spend more than 4 months a year in the US without being considered a US resident for tax purposes, its easy to see why more and more Canadians are choosing the Riviera Nayarit, located on Mexico’s Pacific coast on the same latitude as Hawaii. Riviera Nayarit neighbors Puerto Vallarta and shares the northern half of Banderas Bay. Offering some of the best year around weather, this area is a welcome change from the typical resort retirement communities. With over 330 days of interrupted sunshine it can’t be beat when it comes to weather; an average day during the winter months is typically, 25c. The cost of living is half or less of most North American cities. Direct flights to major Canadian and American cities make it a quick and affordable destination to reach. The Puerto Vallarta International airport is only 15-30 minutes away depending on where you are located.
Riviera Nayarit is located in the Northern half of the Bay of Banderas, Mexico’s largest bay and home to thousands of aquatic species. During the winter months pods of Humpback whales inhabit the bay and use its nutrient rich waters to feed while birthing their calves. The Bay of Banderas is sheltered from storms and teeming with dolphins, making it an ideal place enjoy snorkeling, fishing, surfing, whale watching, sailing and more. The Riviera Nayarit offers services and amenities similar to those of North America. You will find the old familiars of Walmart, Sams Club, Costco, Home Depot ect. Most locals speak English, making it easy to communicate. Don’t be afraid to try your hand at speaking Spanish. The locals are appreciative of your attempts. Getting around is very easy with great roads and well maintained highways; excellent bus and taxi transport as well as easy driving conditions. Mexico also has a stable government, a very foreign friendly VISA program and is the world’s 11th largest economy. The Mexican peso is the strongest performing currency in the world against the US dollar in the first half of 2012. There are many wonderful towns to visit, each with its own distinct charm. From the high-end luxury of Punta Mita to the laid back surfing vibe of Sayulita, there is something for everyone in Riviera Nayarit. In the town of Bucerias, just north of Nuevo Vallarta, there is a very large enclave of Canadians. You will find almost as many Canadian province licence plates as those from Nayarit on the streets. Riviera Nayarit’s locals are a warm and welcoming and eager to share their culture with others. The only thing more beautiful than the area are the locals themselves. With ongoing social and cultural events happening all the time, it’s easy to see why so many Canadian travelers have taken the plunge and made the Riviera Nayarit their home away from home.

Mexico has long been the number-one destination for North Americans and Canadians retiring abroad. A hospitable country, Mexico has some of the most beautiful weather and coastlines in the Americas. It is an easy choice for potential retirees, as Mexico’s proximity to the U.S. border allows for frequent returns to visit relatives and the family doctor. Recent innovations now make it even easier as expatriates can affordably stay in constant contact with family and friends using the Internet and safely cruise along the modern, divided toll highways from north to south and east to west. With the baby boomers, the generation born between 1946-1964, entering into retirement, Mexico can expect a sharp increase of expats from the North seeking their extended “American dream”. The greatest deterrent for pre-millennium U.S. and Canadian migrants had been their accessibility to quality health care. With better technologies, the addition of new medical schools and advanced hospitals, improved hospital standards, and affordable access to Mexico’s Social Security System, the baby boomers will be impressed with the improved accessibility to quality health care.
Leading up to 1994, when the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) became active, it was estimated that Mexico’s health-care sector was dishing out a whopping 100 million dollars a year in tariffs to acquire U.S. and Canadian medical technology. Most all those tariffs have since been removed, freeing up funds for advanced technologies and additional health care services. Overall in Mexico, NAFTA has increased efficiency, equity, and satisfaction for the public as well as for health professionals and health care institutions. The previous generation’s investments in medical schools for key cities has helped fuel the growth of advanced hospitals. The 1970’s and 80’s saw several new medical schools, including the University of Baja California, the Technological University of Monterrey and the Autonomous University of Querétaro. This investment in intellectual capital supported local, continuing medical education and medical research, providing an incentive for medical specialists and hospital dollars to hang around. In this decade alone, Mexico’s two largest hospital chains, Grupo Angeles and Star Médica seem on track to almost double the number of private, advanced hospitals in Mexican cities. A complicated, yet worthwhile, goal of NAFTA was the harmonization of hospital standards and regulations among participating countries. Though a gap continues to exist, Mexico and the U.S. have come a long way since 1994. Many Mexican hospitals, competing for affluent nationals and enthusiastic to reach out to a growing population of North Americans and Canadians seeking to address their medical needs in Mexico, have worked to affiliate themselves with top U.S. and Canadian medical centers and have earned stringent international accreditations.

Many foreigners that don’t pay into Mexico’s Social Security system or purchase a private medical plan attest that Mexican health care is so affordable that they will pay out-of-pocket for basic medical needs and only return to the U.S. for serious health problems. An office visit to the doctor in Mexico runs between US$30-40, and a hospital room is US$90-100.
MEDICAL TOURISM: A HEALTHY SOLUTION As healthcare costs continue to rise in Western countries such as the US and Canada patients are becoming increasingly frustrated, leading them to seek medical care abroad. Waiting times are also getting longer within national health services, making some people’s lives very difficult. There is nothing worse that preparing for a surgical procedure only to have it canceled at the last moment. What is often called “global healthcare” or “medical tourism” provides a beneficial solution for the patient and also helps the country they travel to. Medical tourism in Mexico is very popular with people in the US and Canada because of the close proximity to their countries.
Many companies in the US, Canada and Mexico offer Medical packages designed to fit the needs of Canadians. Packages range from simple dental work to complicated surgeries and everything in between. Title Insurance: The Essential Protection for Mexican Real Estate

Canadian newspapers carried stories recently about the eviction of land owners in an area known as La Manzanilla, located on beautiful Tenacatita Bay, between Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo on the west coast of Mexico. Many owners purchased property from farmers that had previously been Ejido land; a tenancy not unlike Indian lands in the United States and Canada. Ostensibly, the proper legal procedure had been followed and apparently many of the properties were held in fideicomisos, the Mexican bank trust that is required for foreign owners in compliance with Article 27 of the Mexican constitution. According to information published, the prior titles to the land had been signed by Vicente Fox, president of Mexico during 2000-2006. This is a nightmare that could have been avoided. Title insurance is available in Mexico. A title policy, issued in conformance with Mexican law, will protect the amount of the buyer’s investment. In order to obtain a policy of title insurance, a title investigation must be carried out. This investigation will report potential issues and problems. If none are found, or if the issues are resolvable, a commitment will be issued and the policy will be written at the time title transfers to the buyer who ordered the investigation. If the title company reports problems that cannot be resolved, the potential buyer will at least be fully aware of the risk and can decide whether or not to proceed with the purchase. Some problems are not immediately known, however. Title insurance is NOT an expensive proposition. The title investigation cost will depend upon the area where the property is located and can range from $450 to $3,000. Actual cost will depend upon whether or not a title database has been created. When a new database must be created obviously more time, and hence, greater cost, will be involved. orth America has been an important partner for Mexico’s international trade as well as a valuable region for investment and cooperation. Exports to this region represent more than 80% of Mexico’s total world exports, thereby playing a key role in its strategic development.

In terms of foreign direct investment, Mexico and Canada’s relationship has been growing consistently with an increased investment flow from both countries. You feel lucky if you receive an invitation to a dinner party at Casa Escondida….the food is always delicious and crafted with care, and the company interesting and fun. The menu is inspired by what is the most fresh at the weekly farmer’s market, and guests are a mixture of local friends and visitors from the owner’s hometown of Virginia City, Nevada, and who stay in one of the many guest rooms on the property. The owners, Jeff Teague and Paul Yandre, were on a search for a future retirement home when they first discovered Loreto and Casa Escondida in 1997. They were considering Hawaii, but thought they would end up with “island fever.” They almost bought in Costa Rica, but concluded it was too expensive and difficult to get back and forth to Virginia City, where they were still working with their antique and gift shops. They had always been intrigued by the Baja, and had retained a love of Mexico from their time living on the mainland, so when friends invited them to visit them in Loreto, they jumped at the chance to see it for themselves. They ended up falling in love with the town of Loreto….. its proximity to the Sea of Cortes and the mountains, the friendly locals, the sunny climate, the low cost of living and the fact that you could easily drive there and it had an international airport, convinced them that this was

the place. A flyer in the window of a real estate office advertising Casa Escondida caught their eye, and they knew right away it was a property with potential. It had “good bones” and was located just a half block away from the Sea of Cortes and three blocks from the historic plaza. They purchased it and have been renovating and remodeling it ever since, creating a space with beautiful details where everyone who enters feels welcome. Loreto is a small peaceful town located 750 miles down the Baja Peninsula on the Sea of Cortes and particularly attracts people who enjoy nature and the outdoors. In addition to world class sport fishing, Loreto offers numerous activities such as scuba diving, kiteboarding, golf, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, kayaking, and encounters with dolphins and whales. Dating back to 1697, Loreto is full of history and is the first Spanish settlement and Jesuit Mission on the Baja California Peninsula. The town served as the capital of
California from 1697 to 1777, until it was moved to Monterey. Loreto is a magical place, where the slower pace rewards the residents with the time to enjoy the good things in life. Jeff and Paul love to walk the Malecon every morning with their two dogs, Mancha and Tasha, and spend the day either working on projects around the house, or taking friends on their boat to one of the isolated beaches on the islands in the Loreto Marine Park. In the evening they like to walk to dinner at one of the many excellent locally owned restaurants which serve fresh seafood and Mexican cuisine.

After seven years of retirement, Jeff and Paul decided to go back to work and purchased a historic home in Virginia City, restored it and turned it into a fabulous Bed and Breakfast called The Cobb Mansion. When they aren’t in Virginia City or Loreto, they spend time in Paul’s family cabin on a lake in Ghost River, northwest Ontario. They are always ready for the next adventure and project,

and now that Casa Escondida is completed, they have decided to put it on the market for sale. Jeff and Paul have created a space that feels both causal and Baja chic. Decorated with treasures from the years they spent traveling throughout mainland Mexico while they lived and taught at the University in Puebla, their home reflects those early influences. The walls are painted in bold colors, the floors are Saltillo tile and the kitchen and baths are decorated with beautiful talavera tile. The open kitchen and living area lends to entertaining and has inspired everything from cooking classes to evening theater. The accordion glass doors fold open to seamlessly allow the outside in, and guests are able to float from lively conversations between the poolside bar to the living area.
Casa Escondida is set back from the street and comprised of a two bedroom, 2 bath main casa, a two bedroom one bath guest wing and a second story one bedroom apartment. There is a pool and a large parking area with room for a boat. The lot measures 1129 sq meters and the combined sq ft of the home, apartment and guest wing is 2500 sf. While the future will bring many new things, one thing is certain, Paul and Jeff will return to Loreto to enjoy the natural beauty and friends they have made along the way.

SOPA DE MILPA By Chef Rosanna Acencio The “MILPA” is a traditional agricultural system in which farmers plant a dozen crops at once including maize, avocado, squash, beans and more. For hundreds of years, the people of Mesoamerica have understood the delicate balance required for successful farming, and how the relationship between crops benefits each other. All the ingredients for this soup can be found growing in a milpa, hence the name. When in season, add 2 cups of fresh zucchini blossoms, washed and cleaned, and lightly chopped. Buen Provecho! SOPA DE MILPA Serves 8 Ingredients 1 cup Onion, diced small 1 Garlic clove, minced 2 ½ cup Tomatoes, pureed 2 cup Corn niblets 2 Poblano chile – de-veined/de seeded, julienned 2 cup Zucchini – diced 2 cup Nopales (cactus pads) – cooked, sliced in baton size strips (if using canned, cooked nopales, drain all liquid and rinse well) 2 tbsp Epazote (Mexican spice), roughly chopped 6-8 cups Broth (chicken or vegetable) or water Vegetable oil Salt to taste Method 1. Over medium heat, drizzle the bottom of a pot with oil 2. Add the onion, cook until translucent, add the garlic, season with salt 3. Incorporate the pureed tomatoes, stir well 4. After 1-2 minutes, add the corn, zucchini, nopales strips and julienned poblano 5. Season, bring to a boil, then reduce to simmer 6. Add the epazote, simmer for 5-10 min 7. Serve
