rowing up in Colorado and enjoying all that a mountain landscape has to offer, I have many fond memories skiing alpine ridges on those crisp winter mornings and camping in the wildflower fields. But, not unlike a million other foreign residents, after a few trips to Mexico I was forever changed. I became drawn to Mexico’s vibrancy, sunny beaches and my sense of individual freedom there. In 2009, after earning my Master’s degree in Economic & Political Development from Columbia University, I graduated just in time to witness the decline of the world economy. One thing led to another and I soon followed my heart to Sayulita, Nayarit. Getting things done in Mexico is quite different than in the U.S. or Canada. I quickly discovered that many expats struggle in their daily lives, muddled with the legal, financial and cultural complexities of Mexico. I heard many stories like this one: “When I first arrived in Mexico, I was completely overwhelmed. I thought what have I gotten myself into? Sure it was beautiful, but I don’t have time to enjoy it. I still need to figure out what the difference is between an FM2 and an FM3 visa, and who can help me maintain my property.”

Some of the topics we will cover are: • Property Ownership in Mexico • Property Management in Mexico • Mexican Immigration • Vehicle Importation to Mexico • Starting a Business in Mexico

The right information and a knowledgeable team can greatly influence your success while navigating through Mexico’s unique Legal, Social, Financial & Cultural landscapes. Whether starting a business, investing in property or relocating, Audrey International will make you feel comfortable and confident while mitigating risks and extra costs.

It was unsettling to see so many people distressed in such a beautiful “It’ “It´s always best to do it right the first time.” setting, wasting valuable time, energy and money just because they lacked a trustworthy guide in their new landscape. In an effort to help expats navigate the foreign waters, I started a business that could assist Common Services Provided: others with the multi-dimensional facets of living, investing and integrating in Mexico.  Mexican Immigration Mexico is a fascinating place to call home, even if for only part of the year. Your success in Mexico will greatly depend upon the quality of information you have and the team of professionals you have at your fingertips. I will share important details with you that will help you negotiate through the intricacies that are part of your romantic adventure here.

Swimming with Whale Sharks in La Paz By Wendy Rains I recently had the rare opportunity of joining a whale shark swim in La Paz bay. All I can say is WOW!¨ We had our expert captain and navigators with us on a panga (small boat) from the Cortez Club, and they knew just where to take us. Normally, it´s necessary to enlist the

aid of someone flying in an ultra light to help spot the location of the sharks, but not this time. There were ten whale sharks spotted over the previous week, just lounging around the bay. We were able to see five of them. The first one we reached was gently curving and swaying right beneath the water´s surface. Looking at her from our panga, as our adept captain maneuvered right up to her, she didn´t seem all that huge. Friends Bryan and Sergio were the first to jump in and gave me the courage to decide, OK….I think I can do that, too! It was definitely an experience of a lifetime. I was VERY wrong about her size though. My goodness…I had never been next to anything that huge underwater; I wasn´t afraid though, knowing they only eat plankton. It was a workout staying by her side as she smoothly glided to and fro. At one point the anxiety levels did increase, as she made a sharp turn and I came face to face with her four foot wide, open mouth coming right at me! I didn´t know it was possible to run under water. We all had a great time for the few hours we spent that morning, and we earned the fabulous lunch we had at a favorite seafood joint, Bismarck, on the Malecon afterwards. Doing something like this is definitely not for the faint of heart, I was inspired by the ease with which my friends swam with these huge creatures. It is moving to realize, in such a dramatic way, that we share our planet with many other species and once again I was deeply touched by and in awe of mother nature. If you are interested in exploring more of our local sites and adventures, or want to be notified of future trips to swim with the whale sharks as they are spotted, contact Todos Santos Eco Adventures In Mexico: 612-145-0189 US/CAN: 619-446-6827 TSEcoAdventures@hotmail.com

Baja California’s Sailing Safety Tips Mexico’s prime cruising season is between November and June (once the hurricanes have stopped) and these are the favored times for sailing in Baja as well. Sailors do, however, warn of periodic strong winds from the north, northwest and east on Baja’s Pacific Coast. Some note that

the Sea of Cortés can be dangerous from November to March, with north winds from the U.S. up to 40 knots. They advise boaters not to cross the sea without checking weather conditions first. Brief storms known as chubascos also affect this area. Sailors should be aware that the air and water in the Sea of Cortés are not tropical during winter. Mid-winter daytime temperatures average in the 70s, but can sometimes fall into the 40s at night along the coast. Cabo, however, with its mountain protection, tends to stay warm year round. Skippers sailing in the Baja region should be comfortable with night sailing, heavy weather sailing, coastal and offshore navigation, anchoring, and initial sea fatigue. If not, they are advised to bring a mentor if making the trip first time from San Diego to Cabo, for example. Before heading south of the border, skipper and crew should review the boat’s emergency gear, systems, and engine controls. The “man overboard” drill should be practiced under realistic conditions. And beware making a few common mistakes: faulty anchoring, dinghy deficit, not knowing how to reef, over-stocking on provisions, and electrical shortages (limit consumption or expand capacity). For practical information on taking your boat to Mexico, see: www.mexonline.com/boatmex.htm. The most common boating injuries, wherever you sail, are abrasions and cuts. Therefore, make sure your tetanus immunization is up to date and keep a mild antiseptic wash and semi-permeable dressing in your first aid kit. Be sure everyone aboard has non-skid deck shoes. As to head injuries and concussions, these are potentially serious, so know how to recognize symptoms and implement basic first aid. Hypothermia is next in incidence, occurring faster in water than on land. Its initial symptoms are mental confusion and drowsiness. Seasickness, a form of motion sickness, is the fifth most common ailment. Be aware, too, that alcohol plays a prominent role in many boating accidents. One third of boating fatalities are alcohol related, while most boating deaths result from sailors falling out of a small open boat without wearing a life vest (or PFD). Sailors are advised to have a float plan (see: www.boatsafe.com/nauticalknowhow/boating/float1.htm). Learn to prevent fires aboard and make sure your crew knows what to do in case of fire. Boating etiquette and marina manners are the same in Mexico as in the U.S., but additional courtesy and more formal dress are recommended in Mexico, especially when dealing with officials. Painting the town Jesus Lopez Vega By Moralea Milne

L

ike many stories, the beginning is difficult to define. Does it start with the indigenous Coca people who lived and fished and worshipped along the shores of Lake Chapala many centuries ago? Or perhaps with the invasion of the Spanish conquistadores and their Catholic religion that heralded momentous changes to the landscape and the people of Mexico? Perhaps we can narrow the focus to the arrival in Ajijic of Neill James in the early 1940’s, an intrepid world traveler and author who settled on the shores of Mexico’s largest lake, charmed by the culture and people. Neill James started art classes for the local children and here, finally, is where Jesus Lopez Vega enters the story. Born in 1962, Jesús and his older brother Antonio were some of the children whose natural talents for the arts blossomed under the tutelage provided by Miss James. Many of Jesús paintings involve the landscape and culture of Ajijic today, the church, the village square and the celebrations and festivities that are a joyous expression of Mexican culture. Although his art is represented well on the small canvas or in sculpture, it is his larger than life murals which have captured the essence and soul of Mexican folkloric tradition, imbuing space with bold colour and a sense of magic realism. In an article by blogger Judy King, of Ajijic, Jesús states: “When I look at the murals here in Ajijic I think of how we have brought back the spirits of masters of the Mexican mural, each in our own way. We Ajijic artists express the same types of feelings and comments. Diego Rivera was the most historic muralist. Orozco was the most artistic; Siquieros was political and Rufino Tamayo, my mentor, was the cosmic one. His composition of color and figures transmits the pre-Columbian spirit.”

THIS PAGE: TEO-MICHICHIUALLI Previous Page: ANGEL NOCTURNO

16 Mexi-Go! Fall 2012

Jesús explained, “Mexico’s mural movement began right after the Mexican Revolution (about 1920), and there was a lot the great muralists needed to say. Murals are more than large paintings that make ecological, political and social statements. It is about our culture; it is about expressing our feelings -- most of the time what murals say goes against the system”.

Teo-michicihualli was furious, especially when the moon was full. She would punish the lakeside inhabitants by taking (absorbing) water from the lake through a water spout, creating a big dark long cloud, known by the local people as a “water snake”. This phenomenon would hit the mountains causing a huge thunder storm with lightening. In it’s path, this water spout would destroy the nearby villages. The moon, the lake and the woman were a common trilogy because of their monthly cycles. Each month the moon becomes full. Women have their menstrual period. Sometimes local people still get scared at the month of May’s full moon, just before the rainy season starts, afraid that a disaster could happen. The lake gets choppy, eventually creating big waves, throwing out from its waters organic waste, some dead animals or human remains, thus turning the water crystal clear.

“Remember,” he said, “it is a way of communication that comes through from your soul, from your spirit. It speaks the truth. That is not always pretty, but it needs to be heard.” His series of paintings that depict the ecological devastation of Lake Chapala, once world renowned for its plentiful and delectable fish, are a statement to the effects on the local communities.

”Remember, he said, “it is a way of communication that comes through from your soul, from your spirit. It speaks the truth. That is not always pretty, but it needs to be heard.”

In a recent conversation Jesús stated that “most of my paintings have to do with pre-Columbian imaginary; they are vivid in color, a link of communication between the ancestors’ world to modern times, often focusing on the archeological artifacts which have been found in Lake Chapala. The breathtaking mural that Jesus created in the Centro Cultural in Ajijic describes the myths of this area. Jesus explains the meaning of the mural:

TEO-MICHICHIUALLI (TEO - deity, MICHIN - fish, CIHUALLI – princess) “This mythological mural represents the fertility of Lake Chapala as a young princess. Thousands of pre-Columbian artifacts were thrown into the lake in her honor, to give thanks for abundant water, fish, birds, and to maintain the good climate and the rainy season. They say that she sends the winds from the four different directions - north, east, west and south, to keep the waters circulating and in harmony.

People created calendars of agriculture especially cycles of corn crops from this trilogy. Their ceramics show cycles of corn cults, painted with oxide red paint and some engravings with symbols of water on ceremonial ceramics. There also are other minor deities represented, like “cihualli” the corn god who is a feminine figure shown with corn around her body. “Tlaloc” the rain god is throwing a water spout from his mouth and giving birth to his daughter “Teo-michicihualli”. “Tlaltecutli” a feminine goddess represents the earth and the universe. The skulls and bones signify the underworld which is where the universe was created and settled at the beginning of times. The rest of the mural is the immigration of the first people to settle Ajijic. The art of Jesus Lopez Vega is at once joyous and recriminating as he celebrates the enduring legacy of his ancestors and love he has for his family and community, while reminding us of the sometimes toxic effects of modern life.

You can visit Jesus at his newly expanded Galeria de Arte Axixic, or through his website at: arteajijic.net
