NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHERS
For many of us in Baja, we are just about to start a new season. Snowbirds, racers, and seasonal Baja travelers will be making their way south. From the Gold Coast to the Cape people will be arriving to enjoy the truly magnificent winters Baja has to offer. Baja winters are the only way to go, and November is one of the best months. November is a time for family, food and fun festivities. We get together to share food and drink, and be merry with those you care about;
family, friends and community. In Baja we have that all in spades. Doesn’t matter where you are in Baja, there is fun and family festivities to be had. November is all about celebrating friends and family, it starts on November 1 with Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead as most of us know it, a holiday that focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration is two days; with the Catholic holidays of All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2) and ends on November 25 with Thanksgiving, a holiday were people gather with their family and friends and share food while catching up on each others lives. Whether you’re celebrating the lives of those that came before you, or those that are in your life now, November is the month. If celebrations in general are your thing, November is also the perfect month to celebrate off-road racing, shrimp, and art, see the calendar page for more details. Thank you, John & Rachel Pack

Robin Waters & Hal “Paco” Clark The cover photo is Robin Waters and Hal “Paco” Clark, taken with Robin’s camera by a vendor at the Cabo San Lucas Marina area. The young lion is about 4 months old and part of fund raising for WILD CABOS to build a reservation area to preserve animals in/or danger of extinction. “The lion was quite strong, so I let Hal hold it”. says Robin. Originally from Palm Springs, they’re no strangers to warm summers, but wanted to retire near the water. When they visited San Felipe and saw the Sea of Cortez by the desert, “we loved it and were hooked”, continues Robin. In May 2002, they bought a lot in El Dorado and made the move. Today they have a beautiful home in Las Playas de San Felipe overlooking the Sea of Cortez and the marina and couldn’t be happier. When Robin was asked “How do you feel about life in Baja?, she replied: “We wonder why, unless you have oodles of money, anyone would retire anywhere else. Paco is forever trying to decide if he should go salt water fishing, play golf, star watching in clear Baja skies, or work on his gear for Baja racing. Where could you do all that in one place? I would be a home body with my art wherever I was, but the sun rises and sea, plus the flavor of Mexico are the muse to this artist. We rise every morning to enjoy the sunrise together over a cup of coffee on our terrazza. Baja is the Best!” In January, Paco and Robin will enjoy their 11th anniversary together and 8 years living the Baja Good Life.

HOW FIVE PEOPLE LIVE THE AFFORDABLE BAJA GOOD LIFE registered as finished with the tax office they went down to $140.00 for the year.” That kind of deal and discount in the United States is unheard of. Discounts can also be found in Baja when it comes to the cost of utilities. Waters adds, “Also the water company gives a 15% discount if you pay annually (equivalent to your
is a lot cheaper than one may think. Living in paradise is not just for the rich and famous, but for almost anyone who musters up the courage to go to Baja and turn the key to their dream home. Owning a beautiful home or condo in Baja, with a view of the sea, is a bargain compared to buying any ocean view home in the United States. You can design a two-story home with custom cabinets, floors and fixtures for under the median home price for most homes in the U.S. One sure savings when it comes to owning property in Baja is property taxes. While taxes can keep many U.S. residents from even thinking about buying in a certain community; they are a steal in Baja. Robin Waters of San Felipe says, “In January of each year you can pay your property taxes for the year and receive a large discount. If you pay in January, you get 18% discount. Also regarding your property tax, unimproved land is much more expensive than with a completed structure. For instance our taxes on a vacant lot were $800 +/-, but when our home was completed, and
Robin Waters & Hal (Paco) Clark San Felipe, Playas last year’s usage). I believe that we pay about 700 pesos ($56 dlls) for the year, and have a huge garden with a drip watering system, plus an apartment and our home.” Joyce and Richard Lawrence have also found the general cost of living in Baja to be very doable on any budget. They say “We have lived here in San Felipe for about 20 months and have calculated that not including living quarters, but including electric, water etc (utilities) and food we spend about $500.00-$600.00 per month. Our electric bill is similar to our bills in the states, but we were from Fresno California and the electric was not extremely high, also here in Baja we get a credit of about one-third of our bill June through September, usually less than $100.00 per month, even using air conditioning and the water is extremely reasonable, usually under $10.00 per month, and we have flowers and a garden to water.” As for general services and goods, discounts and adjusting to the local ways has helped many live cheaply in Baja. On aspect a

You quickly learn to save money by finding new uses for things rather than just throwing everything out. When shopping for goods, it is a good idea to get to know your local merchants. Joyce

Baja is synonymous with paradise in the eyes of those who have never been there and rightfully in the eyes of those who have. For many outside of Baja, the thought of packing it all in and moving across the border to live along pristine shores and be adorned with the world’s best weather is a fantasy. Transplants from the United States say living this dream

Joyce & Richard (Rich) Lawrence San Felipe, Playa de Oro Lawrence says, “We bargain for most other items other than food, most of the merchants will give discounts if they know we live here full-time, and many get to know us more as time goes by. I have summer sundresses made to order from fabric I pick out for about $8.00.” Gene Jensen, who moved to Baja in 2004, has also found ways to save money in Baja. He says, “I belong to the Baja Good Life Club and I get 5% to 10% off of most restaurants, hardware stores and groceries that I buy.” As for goods that can be hard to find, most people who have developed friendships with other former state-side residents often take turns making the trek across the border to stock up on supplies they can’t find in Baja, which are few. Neighbors will typically take a list and come back with enough of what is needed by the neighborhood to last a few months. Food is one surprising source of savings for the Lawrence’s and others. They add, “We shop as our parents and grandparents did before us, usually every other day and buy fresh

GUIDE TO THE BAJA GOOD LIFE - veggies from a roadside market, and most of our meat is cut to order from a butcher. We are eating better and healthier since the availability of processed foods is scarce and expensive if found.” By eating as the locals do and giving up the dependence on ready-made and unhealthy fast food, they have quickly discovered a way to live better and save money at the same time. Even eating out at the local restaurants presents opportunities to save. Some fabulous dinner for two specials can be found for less than $20 USD. As for a real money-saving way to enjoy great food and great company in Baja, most who have lived in the region for any length of time advise people to look no further than their own neighborhoods and circle of friends for a fun night out. Having everyone bring a pot luck style dish, a good bottle of wine and settle in for a night of conversation and listening to the waves is a great way to get to know your neighbors better, have fun and save on dining. Entertainment is not in short supply in Baja. While it can be easy to spend a lot, there are also well-known ways to enjoy oneself and
spend very little if anything. For people like Gene Jensen, remembering what Baja has to offer and why it was such an alluring destination is the key to making your own fun. Jensen says, “Stay home and watch the ocean. Walk on the Beach. Hold hands with the one you love. Go for walks in the desert. Take pictures. Fall in love again with the one you have, or the new one that you might find. You can be at peace with yourself just to stay home. Go visit a friend or have them over.... bring a side dish, play volleyball, tennis, bocce ball or horseshoes.” Jensen and others have found that by adopting a new way of life and learning to enjoy peace and solitude, living cheaply in Baja may actually be the best way to live life to the richest.

They believe, through a series of rituals and offerings, that this is the one time of year their dead relatives can return to share a meal and have their souls return to be close to them again. Marigolds are used in decorating because their scent is an alluring scent the dead will follow on their journey home. Each altar will also contain items representing earth, wind, fire and water. Some of the community-wide events include the making and sharing of skull sugar candy and death bread (sweet muerto). Entire groups will descend on town cemeteries and paint and spruce up the headstones. They may also leave blankets and pillows for the dead to use in order to rest after their journey. Government offices, schools and just about every place in the local communities will take part in the festivities. Day of the Dead continues to live on a lively and honorable way to celebrate all who are missed everyday throughout the year.

SCORE Baja 1000
SCORE Trophy Truck competing in the Baja 1000
The legendary Baja 1000, aptly nicknamed the “granddaddy of all desert races”, is quickly creeping up. The event will be held November 16th-20th starting in Ensenada and ending in La Paz. So far, participants from 35 states and over a dozen countries have already entered the rugged and internationally televised race that rolls through some of the roughest terrain in the world. 300 entries are expected in the 33 pro and 7 sportsman categories. The event, the 43rd held, is also expected to draw approximately a quarter million spectators and fans. Hopeful Baja 1000 racers can enter up until November 17, 2010. The pre-race briefing that all must attend will be on the 17th also. Almost any kind of vehicle ever produced has a place in the race. While traditional rac-

ing cars, trucks and motorcycles may make up the majority of the entrants, dune buggies, ATVs, and custom vehicles all have a slot in the race and a chance to win in their category. The race will wind across both sides of the peninsula and always promises to be quite a show regardless of where along the way you catch a peak. Started by two men racing their Honda 250 motorcycles in 1962, Dave Ekins and Bill Robertson Jr., the race has undergone many changes and even bans over the decades since sports fans have been descending on the desert to kick up sand and roar their motors. Despite any past changes, the Baja 1000 only gets bigger and more intense each year. It is the largest sporting event in Baja and the oldest desert race anywhere. With participants from all walks of life, including Hollywood and rock legends like Ted Nugent, Steve McQueen, and Patrick Dempsey, the race draws a wildly diverse crowd. XGame stars, drag racers, NASCAR racers, and motocross daredevils all have made the race a venue for them to showcase their talents. All who enter, whether well known and the unknown alike, love the adventure and challenge the Baja 1000 poses to all who dare to make the trek.
San Felipe Shrimp Festival
Three days of celebrating the shrimp industry and all it contributes to the culture of Baja is about to kick off in San Felipe. The San Felipe Shrimp Festival will officially take place from November 5th through the 7th on the Pier and the main avenue. The XVIII edition of the Shrimp Festival promises to be bigger and better than ever before. While the shrimp season is well underway, the festival will incorporate other industries and how they tie into the area’s dependence on and love of the shrimp fishing industry. This year, showcasing the culinary art of preparing and using shrimp in a wide variety of ways will be a main goal of the festival. Other industries, such as Baja California wineries and Traditional Tequila Producers will be part of the festivities. Area folk artists will also be on hand to make the festival all the more diverse and appealing
NOVEMBER 5 - 7 San Felipe Malecon to everyone. The festival is typically held after election week in the U.S. and before the onslaught of the Baja 1000 race crowd. The festivals ability to draw a grand and varied crowd, along with reaching out to other businesses to expand the festival, is indicative of the shrimp industry’s importance to the local culture and economy. The shrimp industry knows shrimp season is about more than bringing over 500 tons of shrimp from the sea, but also a time for scientists to explore and study the impact on the ecosystem. Scientists and fishermen alike have worked together over the last several years to study shrimp, the gear used to catch them, the impact on the environment and also ways they can incorporate sustainable fishing practices. The enforcing of regulations to keep the industry alive and prosperous while working to explore new ways to safely fish is in the best interest of all parties. Continued success of each season will only translate to continued success and growth of the festival geared toward celebrating this time honored livelihood.

Baja Wine Country
by Karri Moser
Grapes from the Guadalupe Valley, Baja California, Mexico. This region makes 95% of Mexican wine by Tomas Castelazo
With the stunning landscape and truly heavenly Mediterranean climate, the Baja peninsula is ideal for growing world renowned grapes which are artfully crafted into wine that truly grows finer with age. The Spaniards that flocked to the area in hopes of spreading Christianity found the land perfect for experimenting with different varieties of grapes. They brought and cultivated varieties that mixed well with European vineyard specimens. When they abandoned their religious quest, they left these varieties behind to grow, mature, and perfect themselves, leading to unique wines that simply can’t be replicated anywhere else. As others made their way to Baja over the centuries, they too also brought new vine cuttings to blend with the already diverse grapes growing on the peninsula. Many Italian vines were introduced, leading to a broad spectrum of vine varieties that were tweaked and crafted
into fine wine that was enjoyed by the locals for generations. This unique combination of heritage vine cuttings morphed and matured over centuries and a location like no other has given birth to a new age of wine making and appreciation. The world started to take notice in the 1980’s as Mexican wines made from the small vineyards of Baja began to win prestigious world awards and small wineries dotting the pristine landscape mastered their technique more and more with each barrel produced. Now, more than 90% of the grapes used to make Mexico’s finest wines are grown in five areas of Baja. They are the Valle de Guadalupe, Valle de Santo Tomas, Valle de San Vincente, Valle de Palmas and Ojos Negros. The first wineries to draw real attention were the Cavas Valmar, the first in Ensenada, and Bodegas de Santo Tomas, the first to operate fully in Baja. Because of the awards and dis-
tinctions that have been won by Baja wineries, UBC in Ensenada now teaches courses related to viticulture, viniculture and enology. There are also now over 30 licensed wineries drawing hundreds of winemakers, novice and seasoned. Many small individual boutique style winemakers pepper the peninsula also. With tours and tastings drawing in connoisseurs from around the world, all of Baja has embraced its winemaking heritage and you can easily find romantic vacation packages and getaways centering on the exploration of Baja’s wine making past and future. To further showcase the burgeoning wine industry in the area, Baja is home to a wine festival. The Ensenada Wine Festival last for the first 10 days of August. The best wines of Ensenada’s Valle de Guadalupe can be swished and swirled during this fast growing festival. The gourmet cuisine coupled with fine crafted local wines makes Baja the newest must-see destination of anyone who wants to give their senses the best this corner of the world has to offer. Some of the Baja wineries that welcome the public to share in their delights include Vinisterra, Casa Vieja, Vina de Liceaga, Three Women, Vinos Suenos, Vinos Fuentes, Monte Xanic, Vinos Bibayoff, Pedro Domecq, La Cetto, Do-a lupe, Casa de Piedra, Adobe Guadalupe Vineyards, Pau Pijoan, Cavas Valmar, Roganto, Bodegas de Santo Tomas and Jose Louis Durand. Some wineries may require reservations to taste and tour while others are open to the public. All are sure to please and excite anyone who appreciates fine wine.

OPEN HOUSE: Pristine White Sand Beaches & Sun!
This is a great opportunity to come in and finish a home. The builder mentioned that it would take approx. $80,000 USD to completely finish this home. Not a bad opportunity for $139,900 total investment. This lot is from street to street and with great views of the Sea of Cortez. Playa de Oro is a 64 acre subdivision that has 260 residential and 4 commercial lots. The development has a natural gentle slope from the west to the Sea of Cortez on the east.
Subsequently, each lot has an unbelievably gorgeous sea vista. Lot sizes range from 5,000 to 7,000+ sq ft. and are priced from $65,000. Seller financing is available making it affordable for most every budget. Opened for sales since February 2002, the project is now close to 90% sold out. We are anticipating this self-contained subdivision will sell even more rapidly this season as the 62’ lap pool, 43’ designer swimming pool, 10-man hot tub, and Palapa Cantina are now completed. Homes throughout the development have a height restriction of 14’ from grade level. This protects the fantastic sea, desert and mountain surround-views available from every roof patio. The development with underground electric and water. It has all the subdivision approvals necessary to legally sell property in Mexico. Playa De Oro has transferred titles property to over 140 owners. Documents are available for
