NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHERS Happy New Year everyone. It’s time to do something different. With each new year, Rachel and I will write our annual todo list, which will have items we wished we had done and others we want to do. We’ll then share the list on Google Docs and either one of us will look over the others shoulder, or we’ll sit next to each other, each of us with our own laptop and discuss the list. Each year the discussion goes the same direction; we haven’t really been anywhere, and we work too hard for too little. However this year, Rachel and I, after much review of the Google Doc, decided we didn’t want to work less, we loved what we did and our needs are few; we are happy. So, it wasn’t really “we work too hard for too little”, but rather “we don’t work hard enough on what’s important”.
We decided that the most important things are quality of life and love. Of course, our magazine, the club and virtually everything we do, has been with these goals in mind, but we get sidetracked sometimes. This time, with quality of life and love in mind, we came up with a way to put a new spine on Baja and we want all of Baja to get involved. We’ve all been fighting a battle against the lies and negative press being used by the US media to keep the dollar north of the border. Many have been scared away, however there are still thousands of Americans and Canadian visiting Baja every year, and we want you to help us reach them all. On February 14th, Rachel and I are going to ride our bicycles from Rosarito Beach to Cabo San Lucas, and we would like to encourage everyone to join us, or participate in your local community ride. The ride is going to raise money for Baja kids, and also illustrate the immense improvements in the Baja highway system and show that Baja is a safe and welcoming destination. See page 6 for more information.
Happy Holidays, John & Rachel Pack

The Baja Bicycle 1000 for Kids
The first of hopefully many Baja Loves Rides is being planned. Baja Love Ride will be a bike ride for charity that will hopefully improve the lives of countless children who need support from the entire peninsula. The ride will be approx. 1000 miles long through 12 communities down Baja. It is slated to last 15 days, starting on February 14th in
FEBRUARY 14 - 28 Rosarito to Cabo
Rosarito Beach and finishing on February 28th in Cabo San Lucas. Riders are encouraged to get the word out and bring in as many participants as they can. They are also being encouraged to seek donors to support the cause. This ride is perfect for athletes, seasoned cyclists or anyone who wishes to engage in the personal challenge of completing the course. It will also be an amazing way to experience the breath-taking landscape that is Baja. Riders can join the Baja Love Ride as a team. Teams can be made up of two to four riders. With a team in place, the ride can be completed in a relay fashion, allowing individual riders to sit out some of the course and basically share the load. There will be sponsors and supporters all along the ride route to assist or guide any rider. There will be ample rest stops, designated hotels and meals for participants along the way. If a 15-day peninsula long ride is outside the scope of your participation, that’s not a problem, the ride is design for everyone. Symbolic of the need for a child to have a good start on life, the ride will begin each morning with a “Good Start” ride of about 5 miles from the
starting point to a local restaurant, where a presentation will be given about the ride, the charity and children, after which time the peninsula riders will continue to the next destination. John and Rachel Pack, of Baja Good Life Club, are the creators behind Baja Love Ride and see the idea as a win-win for everyone in Baja. They are extremely passionate about promoting the best about the land they love and call home. They see the ride as a way to help better the lives of innocent children who have no control over their circumstances and also a creative, healthy way to promote Baja both culturally and socially. Plus, for them and others in the area who strive to be the best they can be, it is an awesome way to stay or get in shape. They personally encourage anyone interested to join and begin seeking donors to ensure this ride is a success and hopefully something the needy children of Baja will come to know as an annual helping hand. Find out how you can help at www.bajaloveride.com, or by calling US 877-LUVMEX1 / San Diego at 619-550-2730, in Baja 686-230-9933 MX cell, or email us at bajaloveride@gmail.com.

Casa de Fe is providing a dream home for young girls by Benjamin Eugene
The long awaited and welcoming doors of Casa de Fe have opened up to four lovely girls in need of a home. The girls, 2 year old Amanda, 4 year old Rosita, 9 year old Alejandra, and 9 year old Perla, can now rest their heads in a safe and secure home. The Casa de Fe orphanage that they will now call home is as much a home as anywhere else. While it is an orphanage, it has been designed to be the kind of place any child would feel lucky to come home to. They have a nice spacious open kitchen. There is storage and shelves to hold the sparse food supplies that could always be added to. The bathrooms and showers are spacious and bright, complete with individual cubbies for the girl’s toiletries. There is a living room area with a television and spacious rooms with comfortable bunk beds. In the backyard sits a play set donated by Home Depot. There is also the one spot every family, related by blood or circumstance, truly gathers—a dining room. The table and chairs can accommodate the maximum number of girls the house has been designed to support. While only four girls have settled in, the idea is to increase the number to six for at
least six months with the possibility of 12. As if opening its doors is not exciting enough, Casa de Fe will be the recipient of help from the Baja Love Ride slated to roll through the San Felipe on February 17th. This help means more to the orphanage creators, Bill and Carol Spradlin, than they can possibly say. They started this project as a mere vision in 2006 and now have the goal of completing construction on the other homes. Eventually, three such home-orphanages will exist thanks to their dedication and tireless effort to help these girls. The couple planned to semi-retire in Baja years ago but they soon found themselves wanting to be here full-time and wanting to help the orphans. The houses are also possible thanks to the efforts of many people including municipal and government representatives. The government has pledged to assist the girls in their quest for higher education when the time comes. As for day to day support, the house will be staffed by locals and a mom and dad couple will live in each. Each couple will be fully screened by the government and live full time in the orphanage. The full time staff will see to it that the girls are safe, fed, educated, and most importantly, happy and loved. The couple will set the moral and cultural tone in the orphanage just as a mom and dad do in their home. While extremely grateful for all of the support from the community and the upcoming Baja Love Ride, Carol and Bill Spradlin still need to secure funds and support for monthly household expenses such as utilities, food, clothing, school supplies, building materials, insurance, transportation, and funds for staffing.
Anyone interested in volunteering and/or financially contributing to the Casa de Fe should contact Bill and Carol Spradlin at San Felipe Homebuilder Office, Plaza Paraiso, KM 178.5 Carret. 5, Mexicali-San Felipe, or check out www. casadefe.info or http://sfcasadefe.blogspot.com or email carol@sanfelipehomebuilder.com.

An artist retreat on San Felipe’s “Best Beach”
A 2.3 mile walk outside of Malecon will lead you to a little known cove that is nothing less than an extraordinary treat for the senses. The cove’s namesake, Colonel Esteban Cantu was an extraordinary individual in his own right, fully deserving the honor of having such a breathtaking and unique area named after him. The Colonel was a military officer and the first territorial governor of Baja California Norte. He is also remembered as a visionary and as an individual who had an amazing ability to empathize and relate to anyone who was in need of compassion.
Cantu Cove is literally nestled between “Punta El Macharro”, or more commonly known as Mount Macharro, downtown San Felipe and the never ending sea. This out-ofthe- way cove, which is very close to all that is necessary, has been voted #1 in San Felipe. With flyovers by pelicans and all the sights and sounds that accompany untouched osprey nest and dolphin visits, Cantu Cove is graced with the utmost sense of peace and tranquility, allowing nature to be the only hustle and bustle in the area. The cove is home to 10 casitas that are privately owned, with access to an on-site caretaker. One particular studio casita for sale is a unit measuring roughly 400 sq ft. It offers vibrant and colorful walls and an unmatched vista of the rolling sea. The studio unit has an open, airy, and welcoming feel. The site
is complete with septic and water and relies on solar energy rather than electricity. There are patios for enjoying outdoor living, a fenced yard for privacy, and unfinished garage that is more like a canvas awaiting a creative stroke, and a storage room. The fresh paint inside coincides with the open and endless feel of the cove. This lively landscape, with its abundance of striking marine life and the energetic crashes of foamy waves, makes Cantu Cove a community all of its own that is waiting to be lived in by anyone who appreciates the natural beauty of the area. This sliver of paradise is listed for $45,000 US, 5% transfer fee, land lease. For additional information, contact A. Our returning musical guests are crowd pleaser favorites, like guitar legend Javier Batiz, blues roots gurus Chet & The Committee, the towering talent of Becki Sue and Her Big Rockin’ Daddies, the always fabulous Queen of Steam, Michele Lundeen, and the vastly entertaining Ruta 69 of Ensenada. New musical acts include the charismatic Afro-Cuban fusion group Libre, popular power band Mosk Trio, great eclectic blues rockers Deja Blues, and of course our inimitable local musical
hosts, the super talented Agave Blues. Word has it at press time that a megastar may make an appearance too, so stay tuned. Mark your calendars now for March 26! And plan to experience the best of the blues scene, Mexican / American rock and roll, Afro-Cuban rhythm, melodic power fusion, and the promise of as much dancing to the groove as the audio gods will allow. Look for weekly updates about the bands, artists, developing surprises, and general scoop on the 2011 party event of the year.
