About Us IBERO ACADEMY | 2015-2016 PARENTS’ MANUAL

The Colegio Ibero was founded in the year 1990 by Adriana Holguin and Laura Elena Holguin with one primary objective: to bring bilingual education of the highest caliber to Cd. Juarez, Mexico.

well-equipped sciences laboratory, a music and theatre hall, a computer science laboratory, playground areas, a soccer field, a Tae-KwonDo gym, basketball courts, a gymnastics facility and beautiful gardens.

The school began in a modest building which was outfitted to serve as a school. The first class consisted of only 12 kindergarten students, but the idea resonated and after one year, The Colegio had to find a new and larger home, this time with over 50 students enrolled in its programs. For the next two years demand for a high quality bilingual education outpaced supply, and so in 1994, The Colegio Ibero found its first permanent location. This building had sixteen classrooms, a gym, a play ground area, science laboratories, a small cafeteria and a daycare.

Vision

Our Vision is that every person involved with our institution be proud to be a part of the extended Ibero family. Proud because we are an academy dedicated to the development of students in all of their capacities through the best curriculums. Proud because our staff is committed to its pedagogical mission and because this is an institution where values are taught by examples, where individuality is respected, and where we promise to deliver humans capable of achieving success at the highest levels, of living a balanced life, and of creating a brighter tomorrow.

The program was so successful, even through the crippling economic crisis that Mexico suffered in the 1990’s, that The Colegio Ibero was able to open a new and larger location. In 2002, the building which currently houses our main campus was built in the most desirable part of the city. The property has an extension of four acres; the building is equipped with an energy efficient artificial climate system, closed circuit security systems, and point of entry card readers to restrict access to unauthorized persons.

Mission

Our Mission is to provide a high quality and well-rounded education by creating an ideal space in which balanced, ethical, and highly capable individuals can flourish and develop their capacity to overcome all obstacles. We work to deliver on this by: Consolidating and maintaining an institution committed to a cosmopolitan and multicultural education, without the sacrifice of academic integrity, in which the goals shared by your family and our academy can best be achieved.

Our students now enjoy full use of a modern building having over twenty classrooms, a

Bilingual and Multicultural Program The objective of Ibero Academy’s bilingual and multicultural program is the student’s development of the knowledge and abilities necessary to achieve full fluency in the English and Spanish languages. The program also lays the foundations for future study of diverse cultures and their languages, specifically Mandarin Chinese, which we proudly offer from Preschool. Acquiring and mastering any language requires time, practice and careful study. Ibero Academy’s Bilingual Program is characterized by the amount of time and effort that is dedicated to the development of activities in which students can practice and gain confidence. Ibero Academy meets all requirements set by the State of Texas. In addition, we offer a diverse menu of programs in areas like English Language and Literature, the Humanities, the Natural Sciences, New Technologies, Physical Education, Music and the Arts. Students learn both English and Spanish natively from the youngest age. Ibero Academy’s unique curriculum provides for an authentic linguistic immersion for the student, who develops the ability to perform in class, complete assignments, and communicate fluently with teachers and classmates in both languages and across subjects. This Bilingual and Multicultural education is guided by highly specialized teachers and constitutes a clear differentiating factor between Ibero Academy and other schools in the region.

Humanities and Natural Sciences IBERO ACADEMY | 2015-2016 PARENTS’ MANUAL

As the student advances in his or her academic development, and especially during his or her elementary education, the humanities and the natural sciences acquire fundamental importance. Through these disciplines the student becomes intellectually, emotionally, and socially mature, which allows him or her to acquire broad knowledge and develop a critical spirit. Success at this stage disposes the student to success at all later stages. The student learns to express him or herself in a coherent manner, forming and defending his or her own thoughts with clarity. By interpreting the surrounding world he or she develops attitudes such as precision, thoroughness, and openness to new ideas. Special attention is paid to the development of values such as autonomy, responsibility, and respect for one’s surroundings. From the earliest age students at Ibero Academy learn to think of science as an accessible and interesting discipline. We use a modern and highly engaging curriculum, full of both practical activities and highlighting each discipline’s social, philosophical, and cultural aspects.

reading and writing, and the development of linguistic skills in both Spanish and English.

Ibero Academy’s Preschool Division applies an active methodology designed to develop the child’s cognitive capacities and ensure his or her adequate socialization.

Our teaching staff employs a curriculum for English skills, called “The A Beka Book”, and a curriculum for Spanish skills, called “Santillana”, both of which we have designed for the development of intelectual abilities, competencies, values, and attitudes.

Our method encourages the development of knowledge through experience, games, and early stimulus. We use the visual, manual, and auditory mediums as part of an integrated paradigm that encourages the child to learn by doing and thereby to satisfy his natural curiosity.

As educators, we understand that Preschool is the most important stage in a child’s education because it constitutes the foundation for all further learning. Ibero Academy is passionate about early education and committed to delivering it in a highly professional manner.

Early education is structured atop several fundamental pillars. These include: habits, psychomotor skills, cognitive development,

Rules IBERO ACADEMY | 2015-2016 PARENTS’ MANUAL

The opportunity to develop a strong and stable character can only exist in an atmosphere of positive discipline. At Ibero Academy we are convinced that the most effective rules allow the student to become conscious of his or her acts, responsibilities, and attitudes.

or a disciplinary sanction, depending on the severity of the offense. A student may be suspended or expelled for particularly serious incidents without prior warnings or sanctions., and parents will not receive a refund of any expenses (such as tuition, cafeteria, clubhouse, extended care, or enrollemnt fees).

Acts become experiences that provide an excellent opportunity for students to discover and recognize the consequences of his or her actions.

General Rules

The purpose of this manual is to outline and enforce the rules that must be followed in an environment of respect among all members of our educational community.

Ibero Academy’s rules are founded on an education in freedom, where each child learns to make him or herself responsible for the order, cleanliness, and discipline of his or her life and, by extension, of his or her home, community, and school.

By “discipline”, we mean the positive conduct that must be observed to gain from a learning environment. The end result of discipline is not only that the student has learned, but that all people involved have had their expectations met.

To achieve these objectives it is necessary to create a program that attends to all needs and is enforced by all. Our program is an intentional and systematic effort to identify and promote those values and virtues that are fundamental to the development of good character and a well-defined personality committed to self-discovery.

Ibero Academy will always use positive discipline. Discipline of your child will be age appropriate, and done in a firm, loving and consistent manner. There will be no physical or verbal punishment. Methods of discipline may include: separation from the activity, discussion of the behavior, redirection to another activity, or time out for the children three years or older. Time out is used as a last resort, and will only last as long as it takes for the child to regain control. Detention or suspension may be applied if necessary. If your child is having a severe behavioral problem that we feel we cannot handle, or if the problem is causing physical or emotional harm by disrupting the other children, the student will be required to seek emotional or mental assistance.

We understand that discipline is only part of the equation. At Ibero Academy we strive to create situations in which our students can learn these rules in an environment that is both consistent and firm, but full of respect. In the sections that follow we will lay out the rules that we expect students will observe as members of our community. It is important to keep in mind that breaking any of these rules may result in the student receiving a warning

If children are at school, and severe weather occurs, then teachers and children move into the designated safe area, which is each classroom’s restroom. Children will be trained to leave everything as is and walk to the designated safe area. Teacher will be responsible to bring a cell phone into the safe area and count the children in attendance at the time of the emergency. Severe weather drills will be held every 3 months.

Evacuation (Fire)

In an emergency, the first responsibility of teachers and staff is to move the children to a designated safe area which will be the soccer field. Children will be trained to leave everything as is and walk to the designated safe area. Teacher will be responsible to turn off the classroom lights after she is sure there is no child in the classroom or restroom. An emergency evacuation and relocation diagram will be posted in each classroom and every public area. Teacher will be responsible to count the children in attendance at the time of the emergency. Fire evacuation drills are held each month. The procedure for putting out fires is to first evacuate students from the area. If the fire is small, a teacher may use a fire extinguisher to put it out after children have left area.

Floods, Blizzards, or Other Natural Disasters

In the event of other natural disasters such as a blizzard or flood conditions, a staff person will notify parents as soon as possible to come and pick up their children. When parents cannot get to the school due to severe weather, children must stay at the school under supervision of a staff member. Necessary arrangements must then be made concerning meals, sleep, etc.

Children will be trained to leave everything as is and walk to the designated safe area. Teacher will be responsible to bring a cell phone into the safe area, count the children in attendance at the time of the emergency, and lock the door behind them for safety. The police will be notified by the principal, or school secretary if the principal is absent.

Teachers and staff are expected to act in a calm manner in order to avoid anxiety on children. The receptionist will be in charge of turning off the lights of all the public areas. The Child Care Director will practice a fire drill every month. The children must be able to safely exit the building within three minutes. The Child Care Director will practice a severe weather drill at least once every three months. The Child Care Director will document these drills, including the date of the drill, time of the drill, and length of time for the evacuation or relocation to take place. The drills will be done at different times during the day to be able to include various children and employees engaged in different activities.

Power Failure

Ibero Academy equips each classroom with a flashlight, in addition to having outside light from windows. When the temperature drops below 68 degrees Fahrenheit, staff and children will put on their coats. A staff person will notify the power company of failure after 20 minutes of no power. If the school’s power is not returned in 2 hours, then children’s parents will be notified.

Emergency evacuation and relocation diagram

Responding to Informal Allegations of Child Abuse or Neglect :

The principal with use good judgment based on the case and recommendations from CPS regarding placing the accused staff person on leave, notifying other parents and staff in the program, and communicating with media sources. All staff will be reminded of professional confidentiality practices and refrain from speaking to the media, parents, or others about the investigation.

If an Ibero Academy staff member has been accused of abuse or neglect of a child in the program, the principal will immediately become involved to meet with parents, document the details of the incident, and discuss what steps will be taken. If appropriate, the principal will meet with the child to discuss the incident, using openended questions. The principal will meet with the staff person separately to discuss the details of the incident. If inappropriate treatment of a child is determined, the principal will set goals for appropriate care and a timeline for seeing improvements in the staff member’s actions. If abuse or neglect is determined, the principal will report suspicions to Child Protective Services.

After CPS completes the investigation, the following actions may occur: Ibero Academy will terminate the staff member’s employment if maltreatment has occurred. If the investigation is inconclusive, Ibero Academy will make a judgment about the staff member’s employment based on the child’s well-being, parent and staff concerns, and possible future allegations. If the investigation clears the staff member of maltreatment, then Ibero Academy will assist the staff member in returning to work and supporting a trusting relationship between children and families.

Responding to a Report of Child Abuse or Neglect Filed by Child Protective Services (CPS) :

The principal will follow instructions from Child Protective Services (CPS) or law enforcement.
