Made of repeating units linked by amide bonds and completely of petrochemicals! (prior synthetics-rayon and acetate were derived from plant cellulose)

Nylon was the first commercially successful synthetic polymer.

There are two common methods of making nylon for fiber applications. Nylon fibers are used in many applications, including fabrics, bridal veils, carpets, musical strings, and rope.

Solid nylon is used for mechanical parts such as machine screws, gears

Engineering-grade nylon is processed by extrusion, casting, and injection molding.

NYLON The newly discovered fiber was wartime godsend as it was a suitable replacement for Chinese Silk and Hemp in Parachutes. It was subsequently used to make tents,tires, ropes and other military supplies due to its strength, durability,and low cost.

RECYCLING NYLON •
Most nylons break down in fire and form hazardous smoke, and toxic fumes or ash, typically containing hydrogen cyanide.

Incinerating nylons to recover the high energy used to create them is usually expensive
•
Some recycling is done on nylon, usually creating pellets for reuse in the industry, but this is done at a much lower scale.
•
The bulk of nylon reaches the garbage dumps and decays very slowly.
•
New recycling processes, developed by Nylon carpet producers, breaks down used the used fiber to recover and reuse caprolactam, the monomer building block in nylon.
•
The process will save 700,000 barrels of oil, 4.4 trillion Btu’s annually, in comparison to conventional caprolactam production.
•
It will also keep more than 200 million lbs. of post consumer carpet waste out of US landfills...

Women’s Nylons •
Nylon was first used commercially in a nylon-bristled toothbrush (1938), and followed more famously by women's stockings in 1940.
•
Prior to its invention-hosiery was made of cotton, expensive silk or later rayon which was created in the early 19th century. Silk was an expensive material and while rayon was an alternative it was prone to bunching and unsightly sagging which made it less desirable.
•
On May 14th, the first day of their release,Over 72,000 pairs of nylons were sold in America and 64 million by the time a year had passed. The allure of wrinkle free, bunching free, inexpensive legwear proved enormously popular putting a massive dent into all previous forms of established hosiery manufacture.
•
The popularity of stockings decreased because of the mini skirt, and most women moved toward wearing tights.
