About the Citizen Reporter Citizen Reporter is the news network initiated by TV Thai or also known as Thai PBS (Thai Public Television). The programme is launched in June 2009 online at Thai PBS channel Monday – Friday 19.00 – 20.30 hrs and in the news break as well. It is the channel to broadcast story directly from the community by the community to the public eyes (We are the media).
Objectives of Citizen Reporter 1. Citizen Reporter can share “Story” and “Fact” on what happening, problem facing with the public media as the sub-region network or national network 2. Citizen Reporter use media as the tool in seeking the solution for problems/ get attention from public.
The Training MFF and TV Thai host the “Citizen Reporter” training workshop for MFF grantee and partners. The workshop was held in Phuket on 26 – 28 March 2010. The training bring together 34 trainees from BMZ projects, small grantees from Phang Nga and Phuket and 2 MFF large grantees from Suratthani, Trang and Nakorn Sri Thammarat and last group from MFF project with Sixsenses in Pranburi. The concept of “Citizen Report” which using the TV Thai channel and web platform in broadcasting “news from local community” with technique of in video camera the trainee able to produce video story reflecting the problem/message from their site directly. By linking MFF network together with TV Thai channel with the commitment that the grantee will continue using video media to reflex their story with publicity. With the success of linking community from ground level to the Thai National media the total of 10 stories after shaping up the technique in video editing programme the 10 video stories will be host and broadcasting online.

MAKE IT HAPPENS! TV Thai team, led by Mr Poomipat Boonliang, producer of “Citizen Reporter”. He introduced the participants about the concept of being Citizen Reporters and shown several video clips (http://citizen.thaipbs.or.th/). The concept of Citizen Reporter is simple that media is power tool to address the problem and get appropriate respond from those who concern. Mr Poomipat said that after the training each team will learn about the video recording technique, capture and video editing using simple video editing software. Each team of participants is asked to prepare the story for the news clip (3 minutes). Mr Poomipat explain the steps for producing new reports for “Citizen Reporter” STEP I: Draw story telling image on paper STEP II: Presenting verbally to the group on what one’s try to communicate
STEP III: Write story in the paper and present to the group for comments
STEP IV: Identify video clips and narrative for story and present to group for comments
STEP V: Introduction of “Ulead” video editing software. Install and how to use programme step by step (storyboard, importing media, export, voice editing, video editing, cut, insert)

Outputs Ten teams from different projects and location along coastal of Thailand produced video clips and each teams received concrete comments and suggestion on how they could have done better with the video and the technique. After the training the trainee will send the revise script back to TV Thai for comments and to produce the final version of their story for distribution. If the story is good enough It will be broadcasting on TV Thai channel. The producer said that there are many interesting stories that they learn from the MFF grantees such as they didn’t know that Sea Otter is indicator for healthy mangrove. Details Groups of small scale fisherman start the crab bank. With this initiative the community has release million egg crabs to the sea. Water Lily is endemic plant only found in Ranong. It facing habitat loss problem because of the canal dredging impact and the overexploited. Canal conservation: impact on illegal fishery and the benefit of conservation and protection by raising awareness and engage community in participation of the activity Youth campaign on mangrove conservation in Baan Laem Hin and Baan Klong Lang. In 2007 and 2008, some group destroy mangrove and tried to convert it to pier, shrimp pond. The community gathers and raises the campaign to protect their mangrove forest. They still concern that in the future with the development train in real estate mangrove forest still under threat. Coastal resource is under threat from tourism development in Phuket. Originally Bang Kon Tii community are earning by fishing but also operating boat tour for tourist and keep their traditional fishery as main income.

Details After Tsunami aftermath, Pal Ka Take Community (Buddhist and Muslim) got evicted from their land since they doesn’t earn the land title. The community protest at Phuket official for 46 days for their right. Finally, the province acknowledges them and returns land back to them. Feather the threat of shrimp farming and illegal fishing on Mangrove forest and fishery resources. Elaborate how mangrove is essential for community. In TaSala District, the beach once sandy beach but nowadays it became muddy beach. The province solve the problem by dumping sand on the mud by it for create recreation. The fake beach is only now use for football field but not benefit the fisherman. A youth group "so rang" concern that more people are now changing from grow rice to palm oil farm. The group tries to promote the traditional rice farming. Capturing and telling story of a group of people from Prednai, Trat who travelled along Gulf's of Thailand to see best practice in mangrove rehabilitation. Useful information and lesson learn at this level is good start to promoting sustainable conservation and maximize the use from mangrove forest by crossed learning at each sites.
