A Family’s Disappearance For more than three years the mystery of what happened to the McStay family—Joseph, 40, Summer, 43, and their two little boys, Gianni, 4, and Joseph Jr., 3—baffled investigators. They had vanished without a trace from their Fallbrook, Calif., home on Feb. 4, 2010. The case took a tragic turn on Nov. 11, 2013, when a motorcyclist found their bodies buried in the desert more than 100 miles from their home (People, Dec. 9, 2013). On this week’s People Magazine Investigates premiering Monday, Nov. 20, at 10 p.m. on ID, we take a closer look at the crime, including the investigative work done by People staff writer Elaine Aradillas with the police to solve these shocking murders and bring the person responsible to justice.

t’s been a stressful year for America. And so when it came time for our annual ritual of silliness—crowning 2017’s Sexiest Man Alive—we looked for a guy who would have some fun with it and show us a really good time. Blake Shelton is the perfect man for the job. Our favorite good ol’ boy never takes himself too seriously, and his considerable charm has helped turn The Voice into one of TV’s biggest hits. Watching him fall in love with Gwen Stefani has only made us like him more. And frankly, we really wanted to see Sexiest Man Alive 2013 Adam Levine’s face when he heard the news. (It’s just like the rivalry between Brad Pitt and George Clooney—or maybe Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Let’s see how it plays out.) We admit that it’s a strange time to be talking about Sexiest Man Alive—it seems like every day another famous man is being exposed as a sexual predator. But ultimately this issue celebrates men who do good as well as look good. Blake Shelton is sexy because he’s sweet— the kind of guy who would pull over and fix your flat tire; a guy who says he tries, every day, to put the woman he loves on a pedestal. You’ll find all kinds of men like him in this issue—men who use their gifts and their talents to make the world a better place.

In April, People teamed up with the research firm Great Place to Work to create our first annual list of Companies That Care (People, April 10). Since then, Salesforce—which ranked No. 1 on our list—has upped its game even further. In August Swift returned with the single “Look What You Made Me Do” and declared her wholesome old persona “dead.” The Nov. 10 release of her album Reputation (her first since 2014’s poppy 1989) makes it clear that Swift 2.0 is not so interested in the public’s opinion of her. “My reputation’s never been worse, so you must like me for me,” she declares on the song “Delicate.” Of course most have long understood that underneath her promqueen smile, Swift has always been fiercely driven—and tough

PREPARED FOR A LONGER RETIREMENT? THE EXPERIMENT THAT GOT COUPLES TALKING.

We’re living longer, which is great. But it means we could be underestimating how much money we’ll need in retirement. The bigger concern? Most of us aren’t talking about it. So we invited couples to guess how much money they’ll need in retirement using our interactive walkway. It turned out that most couples weren’t on the same page and fell short of the average length of retirement. They walked away from our experiment with an important new perspective—because we’re living longer, we need to start planning for longer. A good place to start? Planning for income that lasts all our years in retirement.

THE WOMEN WHO TOOK ON LOUIS C.K

Just hours after a premiere of Louis C.K.’s new film I Love You, Daddy was canceled on Nov. 9, The New York Times published an article in which five women accused the comedian of sexual misconduct dating back to the late ’90s. Among them were Chicago comedy duo Julia Wolov and Dana Min Goodman, who claimed that in 2002, Louis C.K., now 50, took off his clothes and masturbated while they hung out after a comedy festival in

Long dead Héctor (Gael García Bernal) makes beautiful music with new arrival Miguel (Gonzalez).

1

The party never ends in a Pixar fantasy that celebrates both the living and the dead ANIMATED Death is what ultimately defines life’s meaning, but that doesn’t make it any more enjoyable to think about. This new Pixar movie, set mostly in the afterlife on the Mexican Day of the Dead, offers a little comfort—fun too. Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez), banished to the underworld after stealing a guitar preserved as a memento in a famous singer’s crypt, makes his way through a city whose inhabitants are jostling, bustling skeletons, their bright eyes floating in cavernous sockets. At first they’re scary, suggesting the aliens in Mars Attacks! But watch them kick up their heel bones at a big, flashy party: They’re livelier than the living. Like most Pixar films, Coco—the title refers to Miguel’s great-grandmother—has a tricky plot that’s also devastatingly sentimental. There are dazzling bits of animation, including a Frida Kahlo-inspired dance, in which dead chorus girls crawl out of a giant papaya, and a ballad, “Remember Me,” that’ll knock you dead. Struggling against the land—and intolerance DRAMA The first Netflix production to generate serious Oscar speculation, this tale of rural racial strife has a wide, encompassing perspective that stretches out like a field against the horizon. Set in Mississippi in the 1940s, it’s about two poor families—one white, one black—whose sons return home from World War II to find that life is still hard, still rooted in the old, deep problems and prejudices. Director Dee Rees uses multiple voice-over narrators, at times giving Mudbound the odd serenity of a Terrence Malick film, but her depiction of pinched circumstances and violent instability jolt you back to reality. The cast, including Mary J. Blige and Carey Mulligan, is excellent. (Launches Nov. 17; also in selected theaters, rated R)

When your folks turn out to be superevil, you might just want to get out of there FANTASY Runaways is like a John Hughes teen movie that keeps slipping unbidden into a slimy world of adult paranoia, conspiracy and maybe even high-tech ritual murder. A group of once-close friends have drifted apart since the death of their most treasured member (we aren’t told what killed her, but her mother is awfully particular about keeping her bedroom sealed). But they reassemble faster than a hashtagged flash mob when they make a shocking discovery: Their parents, under the guise of a charitable organization run by rich suburbanites, dress up in satanic robes and shove victims into a gleaming, glowing sarcophagus thingy. A lot of this seems connected to a cultlike church run by one of the kids’ moms. Why someone has what appears to be a raptor in the yard is a tougher mystery to fathom. The show is a weird, suspenseful adventure.(Premieres Nov. 21)

MOVIE

DRAMA Denzel

Washington plays Roman Israel, a lawyer who has labored for years in his firm’s back office. Possibly autistic to some degree, he crafts ingenious briefs, but clients and court appearances trigger baffled, passive-aggressive mistakes. After the head of the firm dies, Roman is fobbed off like a dubious legacy onto a sharp, big-league attorney (Colin Farrell). The movie seems unsure how to make us understand Roman— it settles, unsatisfactorily, on grandly heroic—but the actors couldn’t be better.(Nov. 22, PG-13)

Justice League

More costumes, more powers! FANTASY League moves this problematic franchise in the right direction, anyway, away from the stupid alpha-male rivalry of Batman and Superman (Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill). It helps, of course, that at the start the Man of Steel is as dead as a doornail, buried in a lonely plot in Smallville. League’s big mission—which it accomplishes—is to give comfortable breathing room to Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and the Flash (Ezra Miller). They all fight Steppenwolf (Ciarán Hinds), a rather generic supervillain (horned helmet? check!) who sets up camp in a nuclear cooling tower. There are nice throwaway jokes, many of them from Miller, who’s funny and twerpy, if a tick away from an Andy Samberg impersonation. Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, the year’s best superhero, is still around, still indispensable. (Nov. 17, PG-13)

COMEDY Two San Diego cops (Tim Meadows and Patrick Brammall) are staking out the waterfront, where a drug cartel may be clinching a big deal. Because the guys have seen minimal crime-busting action in their long years together, their adrenaline levels don’t spike easily: They talk in circles (or to dead ends) and annoy each other. Pretty much the same could be said for their two dispatchers (Amy Sedaris and Sunita Mani) and the cartel’s henchmen (Jesse Plemons and Jason Mantzoukas). Holed up in a cargo crate, they discuss how to play chess by mail. Activity’s laid-back humor suggests a more easygoing Reno 911! (New episodes post Sundays.)

Gossipy ’80s memories, a famous father’s heartache and a refugee’s story of sorrow and survival EDITED BY KIM HUBBARD

Tina Brown The Vanity Fair Diaries

Joe Biden Promise Me, Dad

MEMOIR Brown’s delicious

Vice President’s memoir is surprisingly relatable, considering that it gives us a bird’s-eye view of, for instance, weekly lunches with President Obama. But the backbone of this moving book is the story of Beau Biden’s death and his dad’s tough decision not to run for President in 2016. It’s a tale that will touch every parent’s heart.

account of her stint at the helm of Vanity Fair rollercoasters through the 1980s: the outrageous covers she masterminded (nude, pregnant Demi Moore), the Hollywood and Manhattan throat-cutting, the stars she encountered (Princess Diana was “dispiritingly dim”). A blazing portrait of a jet-propelled genius.

Nadia Murad The Last Girl

MEMOIR Until she was 21, Murad was

a sheltered, devout Yazidi, living in a village in northern Iraq and dreaming of becoming a teacher. And then ISIS came to town. Men were executed and women sold into sex slavery; Murad never saw her mother again. The Last Girl is the story of her harrowing escape, her work to bring her captors to justice and her determination to build a new home in Germany, where she lives now. Her book is sobering—and an inspiration.

ALY RAISMAN

‘What I Went Through Was Horrific’ IN HER NEW BOOK, FIERCE, THE GOLD-MEDAL GYMNAST SAYS THAT SHE WAS SEXUALLY ABUSED FOR YEARS BY A TRUSTED TEAM DOCTOR. NOW SHE’S DETERMINED TO MAKE SURE THAT OTHER VICTIMS HAVE THE SUPPORT THEY NEED TO COME FORWARD By JOHNNY DODD and MEGAN JOHNSON Photographs by BRIAN DOBEN

Speaking Out “There’s been a lot of ‘looking the other way’ for a really long time,” says Raisman, of USA Gymnastics. “There’s never an excuse for anyone hurting anyone else.” Inset: Raisman competing at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

e

Even at age 15, Aly Raisman sensed there was something off about her treatment sessions with then-USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar. He didn’t use gloves during his exams, and despite his long-standing reputation as one of the best osteopaths in the field, his treatments never seemed to help. Instead they would leave her feeling confused and uncomfortable. It was only years later, as whispers of sexual misconduct began to surface against Nassar around 2015, that Raisman finally put it all together. “I didn’t know I was being molested,” says Raisman, now 23. “You think, ‘This must not be happening because he’s a doctor.’ But I was a textbook victim, brainwashed to believe I was fine.” Now the captain of the 2016 goldmedal-winning U.S. women’s Olympic gymnastic team is speaking out about what she went through in her new autobiography, Fierce (see excerpt, page 65). “I realized I had to include the best of times and the worst of times,” she says. “And I want to create change. No one deserves to be hurt or taken advantage of. We have to stop victim-shaming and support people going through this.” Raisman is by far the most elite athlete to go public with her accusations against Nassar, who denies any allegations of sexual abuse and is currently in jail after pleading guilty to federal child-pornography charges. (He is awaiting trial on sexual assault charges and left the team in September 2015.) But she joins a growing chorus of other gymnasts who have spoken out against the physician, including Olympic teammate McKayla Maroney, 21, who came forward on Twitter last month alleging that Nassar began sexually PEOPLE November 27, 2017

abusing her when she was 13. “She’s like my sister,” says Raisman of Maroney. “We talk on the phone for hours. We’re still both coping with this.” Raisman says her own abuse began in 2009, when she was 15 and traveling abroad with the U.S. gymnastics team. Nassar assured her he could help ease her aches and pains from training. “I thought he was someone I could trust,” she says. Raisman says she was in denial about what happened until 2015, when USA Gymnastics unexpectedly sent an investigator to interview her about Nassar. “I realized [that because] they were looking into it, it really happened,” says Raisman, who remembers telling the investigator that “he does make me really uncomfortable and touches me in ways that are really weird and not normal.” Coming to grips with the nauseating reality opened up a floodgate of emotion. “It was horrifying,” says Raisman. “Looking back, it makes me angry and sad that we [she and her teammates] didn’t trust our own fears. But you think, ‘If this was wrong, someone would’ve said something.’ ” The fact that no one did is something Raisman wantsUSAGymnasticstochange.“This hasnothing to do with the sport I love so much,” says Raisman. “It’s the organization that let me down. I don’t feel like they care at all that this happened to me. They keep saying they’ve implemented changes [like a Safe Sport Policy aimed at prohibiting inappropriate interaction between supervising adults and athletes], but I don’t think what they’ve done is enough.” On Nov. 12 USA Gymnastics released a statement that reads in part: “We are ap64

palled by the conduct of which Larry Nassar is accused, and we are very sorry that any athlete has been harmed during her or his gymnastics career.” While going public with her story has been a difficult and emotional process, it has also put Raisman on a path she’s ready to follow. “In gymnastics you’re taught to kind of turn your emotions off,” says Raisman. “But in the last year I’ve spent a lot of time realizing it’s okay to not be okay. It’s okay to cry if I’m upset and show emotion.” After she publicly criticized USA Gymnastics’ handling of the Nassar situation in August, she received an e-mail from a 14-year-old girl who said Raisman’s statements had given her the courage to tell her mother that her father had been sexually abusing her. “That e-mail is more important than any Olympic medal,” says Raisman. “If I can help in some way, then that’s a no-brainer for me.”

stantly singing his praises. Everyone said he was the very best, how lucky we were to have him around. So I would grit my teeth, trying to convince myself that all this was part of the healing process. The truth was he never made my injuries feel any better, but I always obeyed because he had a reputation for being the best doctor. . . . Because I spent so much time training, traveling, and competing, I was very sheltered and innocent. That’s probably why I didn’t question why Larry would sometimes close his eyes or seem out of breath when he worked on me. More than once I would make excuses for his strange behavior. He must be tired from a long day, I would think, and wonder why he made me so uncomfortable. I felt guilty for thinking badly of someone everyone else liked. Larry would [always] show up to our hotel room and surprise us with coffee, croissants, and candy. I figured he wanted us to be teenagers. He knew —ALY RAISMAN that we ate healthily, but he also encouraged us to splurge now and then. Far away from my parents and family for weeks at a time, there were moments where he made me feel like he understood me, like he was my friend. Larry had my back. He had everybody’s back. Didn’t he? It turned out that I wasn’t the only one feeling uncomfortable. Over the years, among the girls who were invited to camps, there was some talk of Larry and his “treatment methods.” Most of us thought the way he touched us was weird. But he did it to so many of us that we assumed, blindly, that he must know something we didn’t. . . . Over the years, we would discuss it amongst ourselves in the cabins. But we also talked about it openly in the gym. “He worked on me last night and it was so uncomfortable,” one of the girls said to me as we sat stretching in a small circle one morning at a camp. “It’s so weird,” she continued, shaking her head. “How is what he does supposed to fix pain, anyway? That’s what he keeps saying, but it makes no sense to me.” She looked at me quizzically. “Are we sure this is allowed?” “I’m not sure it is,” another girl piped up. “A lot of us think it’s weird, but I feel like if it wasn’t okay he would’ve already been fired. Someone would have said something if it was wrong.” We didn’t know it at the time, but our remarks [had been] overheard by a female coach. Alarm bells went off in her head. And then she did the right thing: She spoke up. The conversation was reported to a USA Gymnastics official. I didn’t know it then, but that would be the last camp Larry Nassar attended, and the last time I saw him through USA Gymnastics.

It wasn’t until I started seeing other doctors and athletic trainers that I began to realize that their methods were far different from Larry’s. When I lay on my stomach to have my hamstrings worked on, towels were draped over my hips and buttocks for privacy and to ensure that there was no inappropriate skin-toskin contact. They never, ever crossed any lines in where they massaged. And there was never a moment when their methods made me uncomfortable. It was different with Larry. I would lie on the table, my hands involuntarily balling themselves into fists as his ungloved hands worked their way under my clothing. “Treatment sessions” with him always made me feel tense and uncomfortable. . . . But onscreen the Vancouver-born sixth grader has an emotional power that has taken him to the Oscars red carpet and made him Hollywood’s most in-demand young star. “Usually someone is more of a child or more of an actor, and he’s a perfect blend of both,” says Wonder director Stephen Chbosky. “When a once-in-a-generation talent is the perfect age, you just thank your lucky stars.” Tremblay is following up his acclaimed turn as a captive child in 2015’sRoom by playing a character who’s an icon to millions of kids and parents. Auggie’s definitely smarter than me for sure! But everyone’s like Auggie. Everyone wants to be accepted and treated equally and with kindness.” Julia Roberts, who plays Auggie’s mother, is also a fan of the book. “I read it out loud to my kids,” says the mom of three tweens. “It sparked some great conversations. Fifth grade is such a tough year—it was for me.” Roberts says she met Tremblay at the first script read—“then I never saw Jacob again, I only saw Auggie. I told him I missed Jacob, and he brought me a little school picture that I put in my script.” It took two hours of makeup and prostheses to transform Tremblay into Auggie: “a neck piece, the main face piece, a helmet connected to an eye mechanism which pulled my lower eyelids down, a wig, contact lenses and dentures,” he says. “It was pretty uncomfortable, but I didn’t mind.” Tremblay’s sisters Emma, 13, and Erica, 8, are also actors who appear in small roles in Wonder. He got scared and started to cry. That got me thinking about what it must be like to face a world that doesn’t know how to face you back.” The N.Y.C. graphic designer’s first novel has sold more than 8 million copies, and she visits schools to talk about kindness: “Especially now, people want to be reminded that there is an inherent goodness in people.”

he said, and the only time I did have sex (if you can call it that) I got knocked up. At 18, Somers married the father of her unborn child because “that’s what you did,” and one month after her 19th birthday she gave birth to her only child, Bruce Jr. She calls that time “the hardest period of my life.” My new husband was a good guy, but we were both kids. The responsibilities of being parents and of being married and starting a real life just didn’t and couldn’t work out for us. She and Bruce Sr. split less than two years into the marriage. And so I began a new life, one that revolved around me and my darling baby child. Two of us against the world. It was 1967, and I was broker than broke, a teenage mom, and a divorcée, at a time when no one I knew had gotten a divorce, and I was too ashamed to go home and ask for help. Besides, since I was the one who had screwed up, I had to figure this out on my own. Somers tried many odd jobs before finding success as a model. In 1968 she met Hamel, a soon-to-bedivorced producer and host, on the set of a game show, where she’d been hired as a prize model. I walked into the local ABC station in San Francisco, and there he was, the center of attention, everyone standing around him while he held court, handsome, sexy, with intense blue eyes, laughing with a throaty laugh. A guy who knows he’s attractive. He was wearing a red alpaca sweater and bell-bottom jeans. It was a very hip look for the times. No one I knew had clothes like that. He asked her out the next day, and she met him at his hotel.

Where the Heart Is “At this point we are one,” says Hamel (at home with Somers). “I am very lucky.”

At home I asked quietly, “Want to go for a walk on the beach?” We wrapped our arms around each other and walked onto the sand. In remission for 16 years, Somers recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of her marriage to Hamel (and the 50th of their relationship). She’s found success writing books and as an advocate for alternative medicines as she and Hamel run her businesses. They are as in love as ever and still, she says, often have sex twice a day. My life is our life. No kidding. He is what makes the day begin. He makes me smile before I fall asleep and wake up happy in the morning. I don’t like to be away from him. Others criticize this togetherness, tell us we are crazy and that if something were to happen to one of us, we would be so lost. I figure, I’ll take my chances. We have the dream. We have what everyone wants; what poets write about, why love songs are written, why movies get made. We have achieved it.

But sex wasn’t all that drew her to Alan: She loved his cooking, his intensity (“man and animal in one”), his sense of humor. One night after dinner and a lot of wine, he pulled out a roll of plastic bubble wrap and covered the entire floor of his apartment. Are you kidding me? There was a big kid inside Alan Hamel. He started jumping on the bubbles, popping them, and then he grabbed my hand. He and I were jumping up and down, falling on the ground, pop pop pop! Soon we were making wild and crazy love on the plastic floor. I was madly in love. They were together almost a decade before marrying in 1977. Hamel championed Somers as she found enormous success as ditzy Chrissy on the ABC sitcom Three’s Company. And he was by her side as she battled breast cancer in 2000. You never think it will happen to you. You never think you’re going to go for your routine mammogram and have the doctor say those dreaded words: “You have cancer.” Alan and I drove home in silence, both lost in

MURDER IN PALM BEACH

In 1990 Marlene Warren was fatally shot at point-blank range by a costumed assailant. Now, after 27 years, police say they finally have answers By K . C . B A K E R

Police say that Sheila Keen Warren (above left) dressed similarly to the clown Bozo (right) to kill Marlene Warren in May 1990 at Marlene’s Wellington, Fla., home because she was having an affair with Marlene’s husband, Michael. Sheila and Michael Warren were married in 2002.

arlene Warren had just finished breakfast on May 26, 1990, when the doorbell rang at her home in wealthy Palm Beach County, Fla. She opened the front door and was greeted by a clown wearing a bright orange wig, a red bulb nose and a painted-on smile, and carrying a bouquet of carnations and two balloons. “How pretty,” Marlene remarked. Then as she accepted the gifts, the clown pulled out a gun and shot Marlene in the face. Marlene’s son Joey, then 22, raced from the living room to find his mother lying in a pool of blood in the front entryway, the red and white carnations strewn nearby. As Joey frantically tried to help his mother, the clown walked calmly to a white convertible parked in their driveway and pulled away into obscurity. Marlene, 40, died two days later, leaving her family and friends reeling. “This was a nice, quiet, small neighborhood,” says neighbor Bill Kramer. “It was unbelievable.” Now police believe they know the identity of the killer clown who eluded capture for almost three decades. On Sept. 26 police arrested Sheila Keen Warren, 54, the now-wife of Marlene’s husband, Michael, 66, near their home in Abingdon, Va. On Oct. 3 she was extradited to Palm Beach County, where she is being held without bond and is awaiting trial. Though Sheila’s attorney says his client “vehemently denies” killing Marlene, authorities believe new DNA evidence connects Sheila to the crime. Pledging to seek the death penalty, state attorney Dave Aronberg said at Sheila’s Oct. 3 court hearing, “Sometimes justice can be delayed, but justice eventually arrives.” The arrest stunned residents of Abingdon, where Michael and the second Mrs. Warren lived in a 4,100-sq.-ft. lakeside French Tudor-style mansion. The couple, who’d wed in Las Vegas in 2002 and had owned a successful fast-food restaurant in Kingsport, Tenn., were popular in the neighborhood, hosting movie-watching parties in their basement viewing room and inviting friends to swim off their boat dock or pontoon boat on summer afternoons. “I never would have thought Sheila had any past,” says neighbor Brook Blevins. “We are all in shock.” But Michael and his new wife were keeping secrets. Before launching his restaurant business, Michael had served nearly four years in prison for odometer tampering, grand theft and racketeering at his Florida car dealership. And Sheila had been arrested for shoplifting at age 19. Even at the time Marlene was killed, investigators had looked into ru-

For years Sheila lived an upscale, private life with husband Michael. “It’s unbelievable she would even be considered in this because she is so sweet, outgoing and sensitive,” says neighbor Brook Blevins.

And according to police, fibers from an orange wig were found in Sheila’s home and in an abandoned white convertible later linked to the business. That evidence alone wasn’t enough to make an arrest 27 years ago, but when police reopened the case in 2014, advances in DNA technology finally led to Sheila’s arrest, says Palm Beach County sheriff Ric Bradshaw. At press time Michael has not been implicated in Marlene’s murder, and police won’t comment on his status in the ongoing investigation. For Marlene’s family, the loss of their “fantastic, special girl” still hurts. “Everyone got robbed when she was killed,” says Marlene’s stepfather Bill Twing, 75. “We miss her.” Marlene’s mom, Shirley Twing, 87, feels some comfort that there is finally an arrest in her daughter’s murder case. “It’s been 27 years,” says Shirley. “I hope that justice is served.” With reporting by Linda Marx

Falling into Film “I stumbled into acting as a student at U.C. Berkeley but had no idea where it would go,” says Cho, who notes he was very aware that there were few people in Hollywood who looked like him. His

father, a minister, suggested an alternative career: newscaster. “He was saying, ‘You get to be on-camera, and there are actual Asians who read the news.’ But my goal was to support myself with acting by 40, or else I’d quit. I was very realistic about it.”

Finding a Slice of the Pie “The reason I think American Pie made my career is, as small a role as it was, people saw me and thought, ‘Oh, that kid is definitely American,’” says Cho. “It was significant in that they didn’t have to accentuate it with an accent or anything. Often Asian actors have to fight for the American part of their identity.”

The Face of a Movement In 2016 digital strategist William Yu started the “Starring John Cho” social campaign, placing Cho’s face on popular movie posters as a call for more Asian-American leading men. “I was defensive at first,” Cho says. “Then after spending two seconds with it, I thought it was brilliant. It was a very simple way to point out what’s wrong with how we perceive who our heroes are.”

Born in South Korea in 1972, Cho lived simply with his family before emigrating to the U.S. in 1978. “It was a time in Korea when there were very few modern conveniences,” he says. “We didn’t have a bathroom inside or a refrigerator. When you wanted chicken, you pointed at an animal that was clucking.” Still, he says, “it was a happy childhood.”

FINDING A HOME “Sometimes I think it’s why I became an actor,” the Columbus star, 45, says of moving around the U.S. as a kid. “Meeting new people every few months, exposing myself emotionally in front of them . . . it all ties in with emigrating and having to adjust.”

Unspeakable Tragedy Gentry (left) was killed in a helicopter accident on Sept. 8. “He was more than just a singer; he was a brother,” says Montgomery (right).

‘We have helicopter rides!’ We wanted to do it,” Montgomery remembers. A short time later the small two-seater aircraft tumbled out of the sky and crashed into a wooded area short of the runway. Pilot James Evan Robinson was killed on impact, and Gentry was rushed to a nearby hospital. He died later that day at age 50, with his friend of 30 years by his side. “A little piece of my soul got lost there,” says Montgomery. gomery, 54, says he is unable to share the details of what he witnessed that afternoon, but adds, “It was a horrific day—my world changed. It’s something that you never get over. It’s going to be in my mind and my soul for the rest of my life.” It was also the tragic end to a brotherhood that began in the early ’90s, when the duo first began playing together in the honky-tonk clubs of Kentucky alongside Montgomery’s brother John Michael. “We’ve known each other longer than we’ve known our wives,” says Montgomery. Today Montgomery laughs at his first impressions of his future partner: “I thought he was a pretty boy and he could sing.” Both Gentry and Montgomery were raised in clubs frequented by local musicians (“Bartenders were our babysitters!” Montgomery jokes), and after briefly pursuing solo ventures, they joined voices—and names—in 1999, scoring a string of hit singles like “My Town,” “Hillbilly Shoes” and “Something to Be Proud Of.” As they traveled the world on tour, their friendship deepened. “We’re outdoor guys,” says Montgomery. “We’d hunt and fish together.” And he still cracks up remembering Gentry’s wicked sense of humor. “He’d get on the mic between songs and say something that would be plum off the wall. You had to just stop and laugh your ass off.” Days before the crash, Montgomery and Gentry were in the studio, putting final touch-

es on their latest album, Here’s to You, due out Feb. 2. One song, “Better Me,” tells the tale of a man accepting that his youthful fire has dimmed into adult maturity. The opening lines, sung by Gentry, would later take on an eerie prescience: I’m getting older/ Finding myself and God getting a little bit closer. “It’s probably the best I’ve heard him sing,” Montgomery says of the song, released as a single just after Gentry’s death—a musical eulogy. Montgomery credits his wife, Jennifer, 44, and colleagues in the country music community with helping him cope with his grief. On Sept. 14, 1,500 friends, family and fans gathered at the Grand Ole Opry to remember Gentry. The star-studded memorial service included performances by Trace Adkins, Charlie Daniels and Little Big Town, and a stirring speech from Vince Gill: “He told me, ‘Man, don’t shut down on us. The best way to keep Troy alive is to keep going,’ ” Montgomery recalls. And just as he promised Gentry years ago, Montgomery plans to do just that. In late January he heads out on tour solo to share the music the duo loved so much. “I’ve never done anything else but play music. It’s all I’ve ever known,” he says. “I’m going to let life finish the story.”

Read by millions, her “Liz Smith” column chronicled the lives of the famous and fabulous, many of whom Smith openly adored. Born Mary Elizabeth Smith in Fort Worth, she rose to prominence after stints at Ladies’ Home Journal, Cosmopolitan and Vogue before landing her own column at the New York Daily News in 1976. Smith was not without her enemies, however: Among her biggest scoops was the divorce of Donald Trump and his then-wife Ivana in 1990; Smith became Ivana’s confidante and so enraged Donald that hethreatenedto buy theDailyNews solely to fire her. Though her column ended in 2009, Smith remained a fixture on the New York charity circuit, helping raise millions for causes like Literacy Partners. The best part for me, selfishly, is discovering a part of myself that I guess I never really knew was in there. It’s definitely an instinct that kind of kicks in. For a long time it was awkward trying to figure out what my place is, and in their mind too. It’s just my first time being around it, and it’s easy to fall in love with those kids. They’re pretty special.

cheese dip. There’s nothing I can do about it, and I can’t just have a bite. It’s a problem. What do you eat in a day? “I’ve gone full circle to my hair turning completely white again,” says Shelton (right, with brother Richie and sister Endy in 1980).

“My mom always made me feel supergood about myself.” “I’m missin’ a front tooth. Those glasses. And that mullet. That is unacceptable.”

“Apparently I found an old Opry member’s jacket. It’s just bad.”

What’s your perfect date night?

Oh my God, it’s so easy: Lying in bed and watching a movie, that’s it. That is such a coveted, special-like and rare thing for her and me, you know? And I rarely make it through the movie, which I think drives her crazy too. CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: COURTESY BLAKE SHELTON(2); WARNER BROS.; RON WOLFSON/WIREIMAGE; JAMES ROBERTSON/COLEMAN-RAYNER

Would she say you are romantic?

I don’t know. I try to be a gentleman as much as I can. I think the thing that she needs most in her life is to be put on a pedestal. Every day that I’m around her, that’s what my goal is. Are you good about taking care of yourself? Do you like to work out?

I’ve never been good at it. You can see pictures of me; it is what it is. I’ll lose a bunch of weight and feel good about it, and what do I do when I feel good? I eat. Then next thing you know, some picture comes out of me, and I’ve got three chins.

MONICA CASH. WE WERE 12 OR 13. SHE’D BEEN MY GIRLFRIEND FOR TWO MONTHS, AND WE FINALLY KISSED. I’M SURE SHE BROKE UP WITH ME AFTER THAT. FIRST CAR

That’s easily the toughest question you’ve asked me today. There’s nothing typical about it. If I’m at home [in Oklahoma], it could be 2 o’clock in the afternoon before I eat, and then I realize I’m starving, so then it’s a bag of Cheetos. And there’s a Sonic in town—they got jalapeño poppers. And then I’m not hungry again until 10 o’clock. Well, what’s in there? Fish sticks. And, like, a big pickle, those pickles that come in their own package with juice? It is really bad. Have you learned from any of your failures over the years?

Hopefully I’ve learned from all of the things I’ve failed at. I’ve learned to just keep my mouth shut and go about my day. I’ve gotten way better at ignoring haters. You just get to a point where you go, “Man, I have got to grow up.”

Like The Voice, it’s coming at you so fast—even though we’re having a blast, it’s a lot at once. Do you sing around the house?

I don’t sing as much as I used to. I wonder why that is, now that you say that. I’m a TV star now—I don’t sing. [Laughs] I don’t even sing in the shower much anymore. On that note, when were you last naked?

“She’s a girl named Gary,” says the Tonight Show host, who first met the “cute, fluffy and fun” purebred when she came on his then Late Night show as a puppy, dressed in a suit, for a skit. And, says Fallon—who just released his latest children’s book Everything Is MAMA—Gary is also a big hit with kids, especially his daughters Winnie Rose, 4, and Frances Cole, 2, with his wife, Nancy Juvonen. “To Franny I go, ‘Who loves you?’ And she goes, ‘Only Gary!’ And she laughs at her joke. They’re besties.”

Eric McCormack loves all his pets; he has a 9-year-old terrier mix (which his son Finnigan, 15, named Scruffy) and Hunter, the cat he and his wife, Linda, have had for three years. But the actor who stars on Will & Grace and Travelers has a special place in his heart for his pup Penny. “It always said ‘boxer’ because no one wants to say ‘pit,’ but we knew,” he says of getting Penny from a rescue. “Pit mixes can be great. She is really a gentle giant.”

Vegetable Pad Thai

For a creamier sauce, stir in 1 to 2 tablespoons of smooth peanut or almond butter when adding the soy sauce (in step 4).

MAKE YOUR OWN TAKEOUT WITH THIS RECIPE FROM THE AUTHOR OF HOW TO COOK EVERYTHING VEGETARIAN 8 oz. dried flat 1⁄ 4-in.-thick rice noodles 5 tbsp. vegetable oil, divided 3 large eggs, lightly beaten 8 oz. extra-firm tofu, drained, blotted dry, cut into 1⁄ 2-in.-thick slices 4 garlic cloves, minced 2 scallions, trimmed and sliced 1 cup fresh bean sprouts, divided 1⁄ 4 cup soy sauce 4 tsp. ketchup 4 tsp. granulated sugar 1⁄ 4 cup chopped dry-roasted peanuts 1⁄ 4 cup chopped fresh cilantro 2 Thai chilies, seeded and sliced (optional) 1 lime, cut into wedges

1. Place noodles in a bowl, and pour boiling water over them to cover. Soak until softened, at least 15 minutes. If you want to hold the noodles longer, drain them, fill bowl with cold water, and return noodles to the bowl. 2. Meanwhile, place 2 tablespoons of the oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium. When the oil is hot and shimmering, add eggs, and scramble quickly for 1 minute or so with a fork almost flat against the bottom of the pan. (You’re aiming for a thin egg crepe with the smallest curd possible.) Cook just until set, about 1 more minute. Transfer crepe to a cutting board; cut into 1⁄4-inch-wide strips, and set aside. 3. Increase heat to high, and add remaining 3 tablespoons oil. When it’s hot, add tofu,
