Elk Meadows Ranch BIG SKY, M ADISON COUNTY, MONTANA

“ A WORLDCLASS ELK HUNTING RANCH NEXT TO WORLDCLASS SKIING AND FISHING, LOCATED ON A PRIVATE, GATED ROAD, IS VIRTUALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND... UNTIL NOW. ” - Greg Fay, Broker/Owner Fay Ranches, Inc.

The 1,501± acre Elk Meadows Ranch is not only a stunningly beautiful and private recreational ranch, it is also a great real estate investment, a superb elk and deer hunting ranch and a gathering place for friends and family. It is virtually impossible to find a world-class ranch within minutes of a world-class ski resort; this unique quality makes it rare in an asset class built on its lack of supply. Elk Meadows Ranch is in close proximity to Spanish Peaks Mountain Club, The Yellowstone Club and just 12± miles from the Six Shooter ski lift at the Madison Base Area of Big Sky Resort. This location contributes to the attractiveness of the ranch as an investment, particularly right now with the Big Sky market booming. However, once you own the ranch and begin enjoying every aspect of it as well as the fly fishing on the Madison River and the many restaurants, golf courses and festivals in Big Sky and Ennis, you’ll forget about the investment quality of the ranch because you’ll never want to sell. | $17,250,000

Santa Ynez mountains across the Montecito Valley to the shimmering Pacific, this unique Ennisbrook property of 6± acres links Santa Barbara’s rich historic past to the elegant Montecito lifestyle of the 21st century. ROYAL ANTLER RANCH

Fairmont Hot Springs, British Columbia, CANADA / $24,000,000

A ppreciation occurs when one beholds a truly magnificent piece of art. In the form of immense natural beauty on this planet, such is the case with what is arguably the finest mountain ranch

retreat in North America — the Royal Antler Ranch. In a letter dated July 1887, Captain R.S.G. Thorold wrote of homesteading the Royal Antler: “These are surely some of the most awesome mountains and waters in the world! I am engaged in raising horses, hoping to breed polo ponies from an Australian stallion and the native mares of this region. There is capital bear, moose, elk, deer and trout.” Nestled in the Purcell Mountains, surrounded by Crown Lands, it sits eight miles west of Fairmont Hot Springs. Improvements include a main lodge, an owner’s lodge, guest cabins, a custom garage, helicopter hanger, helipad and a recreation building featuring basketball court, weight/workout area, pool/jacuzzi, steam room and his/her locker rooms. An onsite water-turbine energy generation plant operates the entire ranch off the grid year-round. Two backup systems — natural gas + wood — ensure winter heat. A filtered onsite spring fulfills year-round water requirements. No water or electric bills exist. The wide diversity of wildlife (elk, deer, moose, bear, mountain goat, mountain lion, and trout) can be seen. Rivers and streams add scenic beauty and trout fishing opportunities. A 240-acre parcel sits on Whitetail Lake, a trophy fishing lake, and includes a rustic lakeside cabin enabling swimming, boating and/or fishing daily or overnight. Open Fences Supports the 11th Annual Wine, Wheels & Wildlife Event Held by the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation

b y JAMIE DESTOUET

Established in 1989, the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF) works with Congress, governors, and state legislatures to protect and advance hunting, angling, recreational shooting and trapping — keeping the rights of sportsmen and women at the forefront of policy.

F

or many Americans, some of their first memories of the outdoors involve traditions steeped in thousands of years of history. Through countless generations outdoor enthusiasts have been eager to share their passion for hunting and fishing by teaching skills to their children and sharing the experience with friends and family. Whether it’s watching the movements of a massive bull elk from the cover of dense foliage or learning the tips of how to catch rainbow trout in a swiftly moving mountain stream, hunting and fishing are traditions that teach life-changing lessons in knowledge, patience and respect for the environment. Just 200 years ago, the game from a daily hunt was essential in providing food for family meals, making blankets, clothing and other useful tools, as well as inspiring great tales told for generations. Today, hunters and fishermen and women still share meals, items and stories from their time outdoors, keeping one of America’s oldest traditions alive in the modern age. For years, Open Fences magazine has marketed exclusive hunting and fishing properties across the country and is proud to support the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation in its 26-year dedication to ensuring the voice of passionate hunters and anglers is heard in the halls of government at the state and federal level.

“We’ve worked many years with some of the most experienced and well-respected brokers in the luxury rural real estate industry,” said David Light, Publisher of Open Fences. “Many of the 90 | O PEN F ENCES

properties we’ve helped market have abundant wildlife, as well as excellent opportunities for hunting and fishing. It’s still a special element that captures buyers and can make the difference between ‘land’ and a ‘legacy property’. It’s important to keep that tradition alive.” Established in 1989, the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation (CSF) works with Congress, governors, and state legislatures to protect and advance hunting, angling, recreational shooting and trapping—keeping the rights of sportsmen and women at the forefront of policy. In addition, CSF interacts with nearly 300 members of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus (CSC), 2,000 state legislators under the National Assembly of Sportsmen’s Caucuses (NASC), and 34 members from the Governors Sportsmen’s Caucus, giving CSF a unique presence in the halls of government. Set amidst the backdrop of a beautiful October day, over 400 of CSF’s most notable and influential members gathered to celebrate another successful year at the 11th annual Wine Wheels & Wildlife event in North Carolina. Hosted by Richard Childress of Richard Childress Racing at Childress Vineyards in Lexington, this bipartisan group included a diverse crowd of influential policy makers, including Governor Pat McCrory of the GSC and CSC Vice-Chair Congressman Jeff Duncan (SC). Other notable attendees included Mike Helton, CEO of NASCAR and Mark DeYoung, CEO of Vista Outdoor and Chairman of CSF’s Board of Directors.

Event sponsors included an eclectic range of companies who specialize in premium-quality outdoors goods, including Bass Pro Shops, Clint Orms Engravers and Silversmiths, Montana Watch, Holland & Holland, SilencerCo and more. Ball & Buck, one of the event’s newest sponsors, specializes in fine outdoor apparel, footwear and tools — all made in the USA. In addition to booths, sponsors also submitted items for the live and silent auction that ranged from sporting equipment to hunting packages and even a golden retriever puppy that melted the hearts of all attendees. “It is a very lively, celebratory event with great food and music,” said Jeff Crane, CSF President. “We had a very productive year and made great strides in policy for America’s hunters and anglers. CSF has many passionate supporters and we’ve worked hard to ensure the voice of sportsmen and women is heard by policy-makers.” One of the biggest policy victories for the state of North Carolina, was the passage of The Outdoor Heritage Act that ended a 145-year-old ban against hunting with firearms on Sunday. In addition, the CSF and North Carolina Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus also had victories in establishing a trust fund for the “expansion of opportunities for persons age 16 and under to engage in outdoor recreational activities,” establishment of a Hunter Apprentice License, support for the state Red Wolf Recovery Program and more. In 2016, the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation looks to further support the American tradition of hunting and fishing by putting forth two sportsman’s packages in both the House and Senate. These diverse packages introduce a variety of policies that address increasing public access, keeping land open to hunting, making it easier for landowners to utilize their property for recreational uses and a number of other items important to sportsmen and women throughout the country.
