EVERY WINTER, SOME OF THE WORLD’S MOST RENOWNED INTERNATIONAL GAME HUNTERS GO LOOKING for people and products who share their passion for the finest tools, trophies, and trips. They find them at conventions held by two safari clubs, this year in Dallas and Las Vegas. When the Dallas Safari Club held their event in January and Safari Club International’s event followed in February, we at Open Fences decided to attend, in part to mark the magazine’s fifth anniversary. Chief Operations Officer and Founder Mark Walz and Regional Editor Vicki Jacobson joined me at both events. We thought we would connect with readers and clients and perhaps have some fun, too. Though meeting customers and fellow vendors helps all the businesses, it is always the interesting people running these companies and the incomparable products that really make an impression.
TOMCAR J.R. MABE KNIVES
Combining forces with another glossy upstart magazine, the most exclusive club in the world, America’s finest carmaker, and a Canadian hunting estate we hosted a celebration at the famed Beretta Gallery in Highland Park, Dallas. Open Fences and Covey Rise magazines, the Yellowstone Club, Cadillac USA and Eastern Quebec’s Laurentian Wildlife Estate fêted customers and partners with food, drink, and hunting-talk, and gave away prizes, including an all-terrain vehicle, and a three-night hunting trip to the Laurentian Wildlife Estate. The next day at the Dallas Safari Club convention, Open Fences and Covey Rise shared a booth and met more readers. An amazing amount of people — more than I could count — stopped by. In Vegas, though the connections continued, it was the unique products that caught the attention of the whole Open Fences team. Called the “infantry mule,” the hopped-up machine named TOMCAR is what an all-terrain vehicle dreams of becoming. From its origins as an off-road military vehicle, TOMCAR has evolved into an ultra-functional and versatile machine that drew a crowd in Dallas. (tomcar.com) The most striking and unusual product might not even be called a product. J.R. Mabe’s handmade knives probably should be called art. Since 2005, John Mabe has forged steel from saw and motorcycle chain, nuts, bolts, and other items more likely found in your barn, to demonstrate a fusion of machine and artisan in a balanced, elegant knife, perfect for its function. He stabilizes his own horn and wood, too. Because he only sells privately and at a handful of similar events, only truly discerning hunters and collectors ever have an opportunity to appreciate his work. (Write him at 811 John Street, Haines OR 97833.) Pilatus Aircraft’s display wowed the crowd. I was so impressed with the Swissmade single turbine business aircraft and its reputation for reliability and performance — all I can say is, I want one. (pilatus-aircraft.com) Dallas-based CellGate demonstrated their property monitoring system, piquing the interest of several attendees looking for simple, remote methods to monitor and control access to large tracts of land. Using cameras, cellular communication and data gathering, CellGate can help owners keep readable, detailed records. (cell-gate.com)

Perhaps because I’m a horseman at heart, Pine Hill Plantation’s presentation of their South Georgia quail hunting property caught my attention. Pine Hill Volume 5 ✫ Number 1
PINE HILL PLANTATION
CHIMNEY BOX
CELLGATE
uses horses and mules to move their clients from their luxury lodges through more than 6,000 acres of prime quail habitat among the long needle pines, with unsurpassed quality and southern charm. (pinehillplantation.com) Because I love a campfire, but hate the smoke-dance necessitated by a changing breeze, an ingenious invention called the Chimney Box lit a spark. This Texas-made, simple, portable steel hearth is designed to send smoke up and heat out. Best of all it just looks cool. (thechimneybox.com) Cowboy- and cowgirl-designed, tested, and promoted, Texas-based Twisted X boots made me a devotee. From the display and the documentation, O PEN F ENCES.COM
TWISTED X BOOTS I could see that across the whole line of Twisted X boots, technology meets comfort, with a whole lot of style thrown in. Made for all occasions, these beautiful, comfortable boots would appeal to the cowpoke working rough stock, and the executive trading on the stock exchange. Recognizing the value of the connections we made, the Open Fences Team has committed to making events like these an important part of the magazine’s future. — David Light, Publisher/Founder

BELLA RIVA “LA ROTUNDA” — ONE OF THE WORLD’S GREAT ESTATES
Austin, TEXAS / $12,500,000
A rare opportunity to live in a work of art, this Grand Italian Palazzo on Lake Travis was fashioned after Andrea Palladio’s famous “Villa Rotunda” in
Vicenza, Italy. This romantic palazzo has 9,760 sq. ft. of museum quality construction and showcases classic Italian architecture with rich mahogany, imported Italian tile and Carrara marble throughout. Designed and built by one of the country’s foremost entrepreneurs for this own personal estate, with all the elegance and grandeur of a bygone era, yet all the modern conveniences for grand scale entertaining and comfortable family living. Showcasing classic Italian architecture and a staggering 270-degree Lake Travis panorama and resting on a private, 16-acre waterfront hill-top peninsula overlooking Lake Travis, the first view of this palatial estate is captured from an awe-inspiring stone-and-grass drive lined with ivy-covered walls. Looking down from the hillcrest drive, the villa’s bold silhouette stands out magnificently against the calm, blue waters of the lake. Built in 2004 with 8 bedrooms, 9 baths, and 8 living areas by prominent Austin architect, David Shiflet. The Italian farmhouse kitchen features a center island, an open-beamed ceiling, reclaimed Italian tile, country-styled hand-made mahogany cabinets with Carrera marble tops and Wolf/Sub-Zero appliances. The action is down at the lakeside where a colossal boat dock/party deck, large enough to hold a fleet of water toys and a full-sized yacht, rests on a just a small portion of the 1,200 linear feet of waterfront. The lake offers great fishing; sailing and water skiing, and all the popular Lake Travis restaurants and attractions are just a quick, dock-to-dock boat ride away. This is a truly unique opportunity to own a spectacular waterfront home on one of Austin’s premier lakes and still be within minutes of Lake Travis schools and everything that is Austin. Coming home to this amazing Italian villa is like visiting Italy every day.

BIG PINEY MOUNTAIN RANCH
Park City, Summit County, UTAH / $20,142,000
R arely does an opportunity surface to own 7,460 acres of beautiful high country in Northern Utah. Very large holdings are scarce, as only 17% of Utah’s
land is deeded. The Big Piney Mountain Ranch is an historic and authentic ranch located just 15 miles from Park City’s world-renown aura — 34 miles from Salt Lake City — 47 miles to the International Airport — and only 30 minutes from a fine FBO at Heber City. The Ranch’s close proximity to Park City affords unlimited fine dining, sophisticated shopping, cultural amenities, great art galleries, at least 72 holes of championship golf, and every outdoor activity imaginable, capped off by the Sundance Film Festival. A brand-new hospital is just 12 miles from the Ranch’s west gate. The Ranch is a 12 square-mile private reserve encompassing marvelous mountain terrain and open grassy parks harboring strong numbers of mule deer, elk and moose. Wildlife of many species flourish in this abundant habitat. Good interior roads provide ready access to all parts of this kingdom. Elevations range from 6,140' up to 8,818' above sea level. Besides the Ranch’s recreational attributes, it offers the historicity of cattle ranching in a simple summer grazing operation. It will carry about 250 head of yearlings for five months — readily leasable to capable neighbors. The next owner doesn’t need to get in the “cow bidness” other than saddling up to help move cattle between pastures on nice days of summer and enjoy sparkling fall roundup rides — but only if desired! The Big Piney Mountain Ranch is by every measure a true legacy investment for generations — pulling family and friends inside its private gates and affording memorable experiences far from the maddening crowds. The Ranch could provide a great escape for gentlemen who have thoughtfully ensconced their ladies in multi-million dollar yet pinchy-feeling condominiums or cabins at Park City or Deer Valley. Here’s a big place to let ’er rip — hunting, horses, fourwheeling, snowmobiling, friendly poker, and so forth — all based on a wise and enjoyable land investment in the Nation’s soundest state. Maybe it’s time to go hard with some of the portfolio! This all-deeded and contiguous block of high country is zoned for about 80 homesites — a plum for the conservationist — the tax advantages haven’t been skinned off of this remarkable trophy! Offered at $20,142,000 — a careful survey of large land offerings in the Rocky Mountain West not possessing extraordinary proximity to a major city and world class amenities plus unsullied natural attributes will confirm the investment opportunity embodied in the Big Piney Mountain Ranch. Riding a horse
is not a gentle hobby, to be picked up and laid down like a game of Solitaire.
It is a grand passion. -Ralph Waldo Emerson
International Equine Concierge W H E T H E R H O R S E S R E P R E S E N T A G R A N D PA S S I O N , or a first wish, unless we have organized our lives around horses since childhood, executing that dream in adulthood can too often turn into a costly endeavor. Though the desire to insinuate ourselves into a horse’s life knows no logic in the 21st century, and some might consider it an affliction, it persists unabated through generations of Americans. Judging from the number of people without horses who sigh and gaze out into space when they are mentioned in conversation, many of us still have an entirely unmet pent-up desire for contact with these noble, romantic creatures. For many so-afflicted, owning a stallion, and a harem of mares with foals at their sides, represents the pinnacle of this dream — especially any who read Mary O’Hara as a child. O’Hara’s words drew the fictional McLaughlin family and their Wyoming ranch — replete with the heroic stallion Banner, and his wilder than wild mare Rocket — in stark, rich colors. Trouble is, no one breeds horses for the cavalry anymore, as Rob McLaughlin did. And, though many people work to achieve resources plentiful enough to manifest such a dream, hardly any have the time to gain the unique institutional knowledge and skills that make it possible, let alone the know-how to make such an operation a viable concern. Because the road to horse-related success, even stability, is littered with less than perfectly scrupulous horse-traders, lame, infertile, even dangerous horses, damaged reputations and shrunken bank accounts, few neophytes take the chance with much confidence. Venturing into any business is a challenge, but the horse business, with its myriad disciplines and multiple moving parts, is one of the most difficult to quickly apprehend and keep afloat.

Enter George Freeman, a lifelong American Quarter Horse breeder, dedicated to spreading the joy of horsemanship among those who — though they have the means and the desire — need help finding the horses, staff, and business advice to keep their dream from becoming a nightmare. His Sallisaw, Oklahoma based concierge service offers perhaps as much certainty as can be found in what for many might otherwise turn into an ephemeral venture. Getting George Freeman as an advisor for your ranch might feel a little like having Jack Nicklaus help you build a golf course. Freeman bought his first Quarter Horse at age 14 in 1960, and by the 1970s his horses starred in the national Quarter Horse show circuit, one winning the Horse of the Year with the most points accrued ever. Freeman will not swing your club, drive your metaphorical golf cart, or decide where the sandtraps should go, though. He wants to help his customers meet their own unique needs. “I want to help any horse enthusiast who wants a successful operation, custom-made to fit their facilities and their interests,” he explains. Because Freeman wants his clients to succeed, he supplies all the tools necessary and they run their own ranches. With decades of experience and horses with pedigrees Freeman knows and trusts, he can choose the most appropriate mares and stallions, train the entrepreneurs and their staff, share genetic science, and help arrange buyers for resulting offspring. He even connects clients to equine-savvy attorneys and the American Horse Council for advice about how to take best advantage of tax rules and equine insurance policies.

“Maybe you could call me HorseFax.” He says his plans help guard against an instant-cowboy mentality. Too often, he says, “you give someone a pair of boots and a hat” and they think they can breed horses. Choosing the right horses takes more than the right clothes, says Freeman.
Freeman helps his clients meet that demand. “We build factories out of horses,” he says. And his business model allows him to all but guarantee financial success. Though Jackie Bee’s dominant grey coloring put him and his progeny on horse magazine covers throughout the 1970s, arguably the most important trait his offspring carry is his disposition.
