The Future of Ranching A much quoted opinion piece in the New York Times this past August warned Americans, “Don’t Let Your Children Grow Up to Be Farmers.” Open Fences Associate Publisher Vicki Jacobson begs to differ. She not only has let her son be a farmer, she believes strongly that he will make a great one. Jacobson might go so far as to say that our children had better find a way to farm or rural life and our food production systems will change radically. Both the naysayer, Bren Smith, a longtime farmer on New York’s Long Island, and the Jacobsons agree on one point. Farmers are getting old, and many will likely be too old to farm soon. According to the US Department of Agriculture the median age of a US farmer is 56 and has been rising steadily since 1976. Her son Colton, a 17 year-old high school senior, has already been successful in a notoriously unforgiving business. His recent ranching success has both Jacobsons bullish on young farmers, especially in their home state of Oregon. According to a proud mother, her son’s hard work and long view got a bit of help from the current local livestock market. Though timing any market is impossible, she says Colton sold his cattle at about the best moment possible. “Beef prices have been crazy high lately,” says Vicki. Trade publications like Beef Magazine have

been tracking high demand and low supply for several months, so when Colton sold a small herd of Black Angus cattle for three times his investment this summer, few in the beef business would have been surprised. What makes this financial coup even finer is that the teenager used fiscal wisdom of those far more experienced. He invested someone else’s money. A year ago Colton borrowed $3,750 as part of the Farm Service Agency’s Young Farmer program to add to his herd of five cows. Part of a program to get beginning farmers started, the Young Farmer money is part of a new move toward fully collateralized microloans, that is, loans under $50,000 requiring that recipients demonstrate farm-related assets worth 100 percent of the loan. Because the young Jacobson has been working in at least two agricultural fields, cattle and grass seed production, since he was able to collect a paycheck, he fills the necessary criteria despite his youth. Living with a family that supports his interest helps a great deal. Colton kept his cattle, cow and calf “pairs”, on family land, so he escaped the mortgage or leasing costs many farmers must cover. He cared for the cattle well, they

produced healthy calves, and Colton raised enough money that he could invest in his dream tractor and some other farm equipment. “I don’t know why, but I’ve wanted a Massey Ferguson 265 since I was a kid,” says Colton when describing the 1977 version he found. Though he had good success with growing livestock, the teenager sees his agricultural future in crops rather than critters. With many summers of harvesting grass seed under his belt, Colton says he wants to raise seed and forage, “hay and alfalfa,” primarily. He also starts an internship in real estate sales and marketing this summer, before he heads off to Eastern Oregon University in LaGrande, Oregon, where he will continue his agriculture studies in agricultural science. Gray Harris, director of sustainable agriculture for a Maine rural community development operation called CEI, says financing has always been a challenge for new farmers. At this moment, however, it is “really, really tough” for any farmer. For many young farmers, according to Harris, finding capital is all but impossible, especially those who chose farming after, and in some cases because of, educations that produced all the debt they can handle. Colton Jacobson worries too about whether adding student debt will change his agricultural outlook. “I want to go to school, but I’m not sure how I’ll manage $80,000 of debt,” he says. The young rancher accedes that he likely will avoid the bulk of that debt by working at one of several local agrelated jobs summers and holidays during his college years.

One farmer near the Jacobsons in the Willamette Valley who has six decades of perspective thinks Colton Jacobson probably needs not worry too much. Don Fisher, at 83, has been farming since he was in his 20s and, although he took over his boss’s farm many years ago and acknowledges the difficult row young farmers must hoe today, he says the U.S. will likely continue its agricultural focus. A diversified and industrial farmer of radish, sugar beet, and turf seed, Fisher says Americans “will be producing a lot of agricultural products for a long time.” Between our technological prowess and our ability to continue to grow our economy of scale, Fisher sees a bright future, despite current challenges. Fisher recommends young farmers continue to support the microloan programs by using them; seek out time-honored connections like 4-H, Future Farmers of America, local service clubs, and private scholarships; get a good agricultural education; and spend as much time as possible working for established farmers. With most of Fisher’s recommendations fulfilled, Colton Jacobson appears to set a good example of America’s farming future.

Changes in demography, food systems, inheritance law, and the economy mean families often sell farms rather than will them to heirs. According to the American Farmland Trust, the most recent Natural Resources Inventory shows that more than 23 million acres, equivalent to the state of Indiana, of farmland were lost between 1982 and 2007. Although “The passing of land through the generations is no longer the standard,” and conventional funding can be difficult to access for those with few assets besides an education, Harris says some private investors have stepped up. She says Dirt Capital has gained attention in part because of its founder, Jacob Israelow’s unique background. According to a biographical brief on his website, formerly a Goldman Sachs vice president, Israelow worked in Asia acquiring real estate and infrastructure on behalf of Wall Street investors. Long a devotee of sustainable agriculture, after graduating from Williams College, Israelow helped start the school’s sustainable food and agriculture program, and now acts as treasurer for the National Young Farmers Coalition.

When she's not minding two horses and her teenaged son, Lee Roberts writes news, features, and fiction, at her home in Alna, Maine. O PEN F ENCES.COM

BIG PINEY MOUNTAIN RANCH

Park City, Summit County, UTAH / $20,142,000

R arely does an opportunity surface to own 7,460 acres of beautiful high country in Northern Utah. Very large holdings are scarce, as only 17% of Utah’s

land is deeded. The Big Piney Mountain Ranch is an historic and authentic ranch located just 15 miles from Park City’s world-renown aura — 34 miles from Salt Lake City — 47 miles to the International Airport — and only 30 minutes from a fine FBO at Heber City. The Ranch’s close proximity to Park City affords unlimited fine dining, sophisticated shopping, cultural amenities, great art galleries, at least 72 holes of championship golf, and every outdoor activity imaginable, capped off by the Sundance Film Festival. A brand-new hospital is just 12 miles from the Ranch’s west gate. The Ranch is a 12 square-mile private reserve encompassing marvelous mountain terrain and open grassy parks harboring strong numbers of mule deer, elk and moose. Wildlife of many species flourish in this abundant habitat. Good interior roads provide ready access to all parts of this kingdom. Elevations range from 6,140' up to 8,818' above sea level. Besides the Ranch’s recreational attributes, it offers the historicity of cattle ranching in a simple summer grazing operation. It will carry about 250 head of yearlings for five months — readily leasable to capable neighbors. The next owner doesn’t need to get in the “cow bidness” other than saddling up to help move cattle between pastures on nice days of summer and enjoy sparkling fall roundup rides — but only if desired! The Big Piney Mountain Ranch is by every measure a true legacy investment for generations — pulling family and friends inside its private gates and affording memorable experiences far from the maddening crowds. The Ranch could provide a great escape for gentlemen who have thoughtfully ensconced their ladies in multi-million dollar yet pinchy-feeling condominiums or cabins at Park City or Deer Valley. Here’s a big place to let ’er rip — hunting, horses, fourwheeling, snowmobiling, friendly poker, and so forth — all based on a wise and enjoyable land investment in the Nation’s soundest state. Maybe it’s time to go hard with some of the portfolio! This all-deeded and contiguous block of high country is zoned for about 80 homesites — a plum for the conservationist — the tax advantages haven’t been skinned off of this remarkable trophy! Offered at $20,142,000 — a careful survey of large land offerings in the Rocky Mountain West not possessing extraordinary proximity to a major city and world class amenities plus unsullied natural attributes will confirm the investment opportunity embodied in the Big Piney Mountain Ranch.
