According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the value of bison — also commonly referred to as buffalo — meat has grown more than 150% over the last decade and the price per pound is expected to hold steady for at least the next several years. Ask any industry expert for the perfect market forecast; the answer: growth in demand and strength in value. For many ranchers who have considered investing in raising bison, the setup is a lowmaintenance, self-sustaining and environmentally friendly system that produces an exceptional product. In fact, for the prospective investor, the checklist of necessities is remarkably approachable.
Climate & Acreage The American Bison was once one of the most prolific large mammals that roamed the continent, the first of which crossed onto the continent over half a million years ago. Moving across the Bering Land Bridge that connected North America and Asia, the herds moved south through what is now Canada and the United States and proceeded to thrive throughout their massive new territory despite not only harsh northern winters, but also arid summer climes. Due to their endurance, their numbers grew to approximately 30 to 40 million. Today, the remaining 500,000 bison are just as hearty as their ancestors and can thrive in a variety of climates as long as they have sufficient room to graze, water and forage. Summer / Fall 2015
The amount of acreage required to develop a successful program depends on a wealth of factors, but is similar to the requirement for cattle. Starting with the number of head is important, but other elements to take into consideration include annual precipitation, amount of native forage, supplemental feeding plans, local weather patterns and a number of other variables. Checking with the local extension office and networking with experienced ranchers offers the best chance for a successful estimate.
Water & Forage Although bison share a distinctive back hump with the camel, their uses are vastly different. A bison’s hump, instead of being filed with fat, is mostly muscle — helping to account for their extraordinary agility despite their larger frame — and are not a source of sustenance. The average bison requires anywhere from 10 to 15 gallons of water per day. This means that a sustainable ranch usually features a spring-fed pond and/or solar pumps that keep water plentiful.

ANNUAL WESTERN BISON ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE AND SALE – Ogden, Utah December 3-5, 2015
It’s a growing question for prospective ranchers: Why not bison?
Native grasses represent the largest percentage of the bison diet, but other plants such as sagebrush and even mosses and berries will make an appearance on the menu. “Bison have a lot of their natural instincts intact,” says Jim Matheson, Assistant Director at the National Bison Association, “so they’ll eat a wide variety of grasses, they don’t overwhelm the watering holes and they’re very gentle on the riparian areas.”
Fencing & Handling Facilities Due to their agile nature — bison can jump six feet — fencing recommendations are usually a minimum of six feet high with 5- to 6-strand high tensile wire. This wire has a high amount of flexibility and will give in case of impact. Also, like cattle, a bison that encounters a hot wire at eye level will retreat while a shock above the eyes will spook the bison forward. This setup works for both rural areas and property with either highway or interstate frontage. Bison are considered a “wild” species and are considerably more low-maintenance than other livestock in a number of areas. For example, bison do not require artificial shelters, such as barns. Due to their larger size, bison-sized facilities like corrals and squeeze chutes are a requirement and available through a number of providers such as Berlinic Manufacturing, Morand Industries and Pearson Livestock Equipment. Establishing the correct facilities ensures safe, humane and quality handling of the herd when necessary.
in essence,
where bison graze,
The Bison Advantage “In general, bison are very hearty animals that offer many advantages for first-time owners,” says Matheson. “They have a long productive life, no predators, the cows calf on their own and they are extremely resistant to disease, which means lower vet and medical costs. They also eat less in the winter and benefit the environment simply through their presence.” Researchers Kevin Ellison and Steve Zack from the Wildlife Conservation Society studied bison in Colorado and Montana and showed that the natural grazing habits of bison herds create prime nesting habitat for native bird species. In essence, where bison graze, other wildlife flourishes.
Meat & Other Products
A Growing Network
Low in calories, fat and cholesterol and high in fiber, iron and Vitamin B-12, bison meat is perfect for the health conscious consumer and though high in demand, supply is low. In 2014, the USDA processed approximately 60,000 head the entire year; comparatively, they processed over 100,000 head of cattle per day. The combination of high demand, low supply and history of exponential growth continues to drive established ranchers to expand their current facilities and profitable opportunities for first-time breeders and investors.
The return of the bison to the America landscape is due, in large, to a network of sustainable ranchers who have brought back a species from almost certain extinction. From the Terry Bison Ranch in Cheyenne, Wyoming—one of the largest bison ranches in America—to smaller operations like Heart Rock Bison in the high plains of Eastern Colorado, ranchers are dedicated to supplying an exceptional product free of growth hormones or chemicals via sustainable and humane raising practices. This steadily growing network is comprised of 14 regional associations and hundreds of ranchers always looking to share their knowledge and welcome new members.
In the theme of sustainability, the entire carcass is utilized. Bison offal is in high demand with the pet food industry and according to BuffaloGold.net, “bison leather and fiber are some of the best raw materials available anywhere.” Thiers and a number of other online stores feature everything from decorated skulls to musical instruments, furniture, leather goods, shoes, jewelry, blankets and a wide variety of outerwear and personal accessories.
So, why not bison?
Special thanks to Jim Matheson, Assistant Director of the National Bison Association and Larry Higgins, Former President of the Rocky Mountain Buffalo Association and Owner of Heart Rock Bison: www.HeartRockBison.com.

With only two owners over the last 126 years, the IX Ranch is more than just a ranch; it’s the definition of a highly productive cattle production business. The secret to its success: Stunning scale, comfortable climate, exceptional management and excellent outdoor recreation all in one location—the perfect ranch without compromise. Divided into four units, the 126,000-acre ranch boasts around 4,300 head of cattle—about 3,500 bred cows and 600 heifer calves—state-of-the-art facilities and substantial improvements that ensure quality and comfort for both the crew and ownership. The tour included a first-hand look at these facilities, hay production and fields, shops and yards for equipment maintenance, the various headquarters and a presentation with the manager who demonstrated the pivotal cattle management computer systems. “The philosophy at the IX Ranch is that ‘you can’t manage what you don’t measure,’” said David Johnson, Listing Broker with Hall and Hall. “The ranch ownership is a corporation of 11 people who take ranching very seriously and utilize standardized performance analysis in cattle methodology. This has led to the creation of a superior online system of ranch logs and online pasture management tools that have kept the IX as one of most highly productive ranches in Montana.”
airport. This is why the PC-12 is perfect for ranch owners. Have a short runway or perhaps rougher terrain? No problem.” Pilatus USA provided two jets that flew guests from Denver, Colorado up to Montana and demonstrated the maneuverability and multiple capabilities of the PC-12, the company’s most popular and fastest growing aircraft in the business sector. A third PC-12 was provided by Jack Gulbin, CEO of Tempus Jets, who joined the group in Montana. Twenty years ago, the PC-12 was first utilized as a utility and cargo aircraft and, since then, has become a favorite of the business elite due to its extreme versatility. Not only is it one of the largest, single-engine aircraft available, but it also features a very large cargo door; the ability to land on unpaved surfaces, such as grass, dirt and gravel; low acquisition and operation costs; great fuel efficiency; and that is landing and takeoffs require a shorter runway. This is key for property owners who don’t necessarily have the area to devote to a full-sized runway, but would still like their property to be private-jet accessible.
STUNNING SCALE,
COMFORTABLE CLIMATE,
EXCEPTIONAL
MANAGEMENT AND EXCELLENT OUTDOOR
The IX Ranch is a “reputation ranch in reputation ranch country” that boasts more than just outstanding cattle management. Covering 30 miles, the ranch includes all the highlights that make Montana one of more scenic vistas in the country. Verdant valleys, plentiful water sources and stunning mountainscapes combine to create an extremely diverse habitat that has allowed the native wildlife, such as elk, mule deer, whitetail deer, antelope, mountain lion and several kinds of upland bird species, to thrive. In addition, the recreation-friendly acreage is perfect for horseback riding and hiking.
“These unique attributes make it a kind of Range Rover of the sky,” said Aniello. “For a plane first introduced only 20 years ago, its popularity has grown quickly. On average, a particular model might get 20 to 30 orders per year; for the PC-12, we fill about 80.”
Clients were flown in on two PC-12s from Denver to the IX Ranch, “and they all loved the executive business design interior. They were very impressed with not only the versatility, but just how easy the plane is to maneuver. The event was excellent exposure and a great opportunity to market one of our most popular models to such a diverse group of professionals.”
RECREATION
“A buyer isn’t going to find a ranch with this kind of scale and profitability and recreation. Look anywhere else and you’ll have to compromise,” said Johnson. “At the IX Ranch, this is a true legacy ranch with the best of both personalities. Not only is the business productive, but it has a wonderful personal side where the owners can enjoy a quick ride into Big Sandy for city amenities and also entertain guests with wildlife spotting, cattle brandings and other gatherings. Big scale or intimate, the IX can handle anything.” One of the reasons the IX Ranch was chosen as the perfect venue for the event was its access to the adjoining public airstrip, which is shorter than most standard runways. “For many ranch owners, plane access is critical,” said Tom Aniello, Vice President of Marketing for Pilatus USA. “It saves time and money when you can fly directly into your ranch instead of having to use the local
