There were a couple of days last week when I received notification of the cancellation or postponement of four events planned for early July, showing how difficult it is for organisers trying to get the ‘season’ under way. This, coupled with staff shortages in pubs resulting in some not being able to open seven days a week – yes, I had one of those as well – proving it’s clearly a frustrating time for all. Our emailed Newsletter does try to keep everyone abreast of such things, but it’s not an easy task and does rely on information being sent to us, so please keep it coming. This also applies to Pub Meets as they look to get going again. If we can help promote your activities, please do let us know via sfscribe@mgabingdon.org.uk
There have, however, been a few opportunities for us to give the cars an airing when we’ve been alerted to informal gatherings in large open spaces linked to places providing refreshments. We’ve been along to a couple and enjoyed meeting up with some people we’ve not seen for over 12 months.
At the time of writing, we’re optimistic about our Summer Day Out on Sunday August 22 so please look for the separate piece about this in this issue.
Lockdown has presented members with opportunities to exercise their imaginations and we’ve recently been sent a couple of examples of this, so well done and thanks, James Hall (Octagon Garden) and Pat & Graham Stubbs (TF Workbench) for sharing your efforts.
Finally, welcome to all new members and we hope to see you out and about sometime soon.

The MGCC Anglia Summer Picnic 2021
This year the Picnic was at Holkham Hall near Wells-next-the-Sea in Norfolk. The event was well publicised with details and booking form both on the Anglia website and a full-page advertisement in the May edition of Safety Fast!
The response from members was amazing, perhaps due to the fact the country was beginning to emerge from lockdown and also because it was an affordable way to meet and socialise with other MGCC members at a relaxed informal event. On the day the official count was 85 MGs and three other cars where members had problems with their MGs.
Entry was via the South Gate which led to a scenic two-mile drive across the estate. We had a great location, drawn up in rows behind the Hall looking out on the lake. There was a profusion of wildlife in the parkland with hundreds of geese, swans on the lake and even red kites.
Part way through the morning there was an amazing sight of a herd of deer moving en masse past the lake and on into the far parkland. Some said there were 50 others thought nearer 100. I had never seen anything like it.
During the afternoon we were entertained by a cricket match in front of us. Rather worrying was a six hit with the ball dropping between the rows of cars. Some members prudently moved location.
The opportunity was taken to make a presentation of the Annual Photographic Trophy to Gus and Pat Ives, the very well-deserving winners from 2020. Anyone taking photos at the Picnic is invited to enter them into the 2021 competition.
There was a superb and varied selection of MGs present, ranging from a PB Airline saloon and some other pre-war cars through every type of post-war model of MG right up to the present day ZS.
The Holkham Hall staff were very helpful throughout and did everything they could to help make our day a success.
Many thanks to those Committee members who helped me in various ways on the day.

When you receive this, you may still have time to enter our only show of the year, at Kames on August 8. As I write this, we are expecting 40 or so cars with a great spread of years and with a great turnout of Fs and TFs for the first appearance, at a show, in many years of the MGF Register, MG Fun. However, as always, there may well be a cancellation, so give me a call if you are interested. If you are at the show, then please look in and say ‘Hello’!
There are two runs this month, on the 21st and the 22nd. The annual MGA run is on the 21st and I expect all MGA owners are well aware of that!
However, the following day, 22nd, is a run for all MGs. Heading for Drumlanrig Castle after a start at Cairn Lodge Services. Full details are on the website, please book early.
Further ahead, the September one-day run will be in the Borders area on the 12th. Details will be on the website, please check and book.
Also in September will be the ‘Gathering of the Clans’ event, this time on the 27th and again more details will be on our website or our Facebook page.
One of the most important things in any club is to maintain membership numbers and I am pleased to say that in every recent month the Centre has seen an increase, at least partly due to MG Fun. If you have MG friends who are not (yet) members, then do not forget that they are welcome to attend any of our events as a guest which may well entice them to join!
I will soon need to start work on the Caledonian Centre Newsletter. I already have a couple of articles lined up, one on the story of a registration number and the other on the MGF 25+1 event. BUT I need more, so if you have been busily restoring an MG during lockdown or would like to write your MG memoirs then please get your laptop out and get tapping, or even commit pen to paper and send to me please.

Well, as we all thought that we may be getting back to some sort of normality, several local events have still been cancelled for one reason or another. Besides all the restrictions placed on us, the weather managed to beat the Totnes Rotary Club Classic Car Show which should have been held at Staverton, but it has been re-scheduled for Sunday September 19 at the same venue. Further details will be available on the website when we receive them. The Centre will have a display there.
Luckily, we have been able to hold a few of the Natters, whilst observing all the restrictions of Covid. First, I would like to thank Jean and Malcolm Edwards for organising online meetings for the South Hams attendees via Zoom, which proved very successful. Physical meets have also started up with the Exeter, Borders and Devon and Cornwall MGF Register meeting with due observation of the restrictions. The photo this month shows the attendees at the Dartmoor Hotel Natter. All being well, the majority of the restrictions will be lifted very soon.
Several D & C members marshalled on the Motor Cycling Club’s John Aley Summer Trial recently and were able to watch quite a large number of MGs competing successfully in this event, including Mike Dalby in his MG M-Type Midget. The route covered some 180 miles and included famous sections from both the Exeter and Land’s End Trials, such as Simms hill near Bovey Tracey and Bluehills Mine near St Agnes.
As mentioned before, the Centre will be having a display at the Saltram Rotary Club Classic Car Show being held at the Lyneham Estate near Yealmpton on Sunday September 5. Several members have let me know they have entered but I need to know the final numbers so the organisers can leave enough space for us and our gazebo all to be together. Details and entry forms are still available on our Facebook page.
We have no other events planned at the moment, as I write this at the beginning of July, but keep and eye on the Centre website and especially Ted’s excellent newsletter which should be published at the same time as you receive this issue of Safety Fast! as they contain the most up to date information available.

We’ve been out!
During a ‘full-on’ few Octagonal days, first we had the Centre’s AGM on Thursday July 1, postponed from March, and after a change of heart by Boris and his boffins, it had to be in digital format, by ’Zoom’. Organised by David Stonehouse and our dedicated director Lorraine Noble-Thompson, 16 members saw that it actually went rather well. The Centre Committee is unchanged, with Steve Hall continuing as Chairman, ably assisted by Malcolm Clark as Vice-Chairman. Sue Mackenzie continues as Centre Secretary, Membership Secretary and Points Secretary, Dave Stonehouse as Competition Secretary and Safeguarding Officer. Robert Taylor continues as Newsletter Co-ordinator, and Richard Withington has Special Responsibility for the Luncheon Club. Yours truly continues as Hon. Treasurer and Scribe, and Bill Sharp has thrown his hat in to help where required. All good. On Saturday July 3, over 30 of us gathered at East Kirkby for the ‘MG Rover’ Day: it was great

The Midland Centre ‘Naviscat’ organised by committee member Bob Blackstock on Saturday June 5 was considered by all the 12 crews that took part to be a great success.
The weather was fabulous. The countryside a brilliant green. With the hood down the entire day there is nothing better than MG-ing down twisting lanes smelling the greenery and all too often manure, and the distant calling of a cuckoo, a sound a townie may not have heard in years. And at the end a superb, chilled to perfection glass of cider brewed at the start and finish venue of Weston`s Cider complex of Much Marcle.
A great thank you to Bob Blackstock for making it happen and to all entrants for their continued support.
Midland Centre members were out in force on the first of our ‘Super Natter’ Evenings on Tuesday to see so many friends ‘out and about’ again, and our own Andy Rake coaxing such a fabulous soundtrack from ‘Just Jane’s’ four Merlins.
The folowing day saw us gather at the Allington Car Show, where everything from a monstrous Dodge Charger R/T to a beach buggy were on display alongside our MGs. Some inclemency saw a few early leavers, but the stayers, including John Rogers in his latest Black Beauty, were treated to a single Merlin triplepassing overhead, in the form of a BBMF Spitfire.
Hopefully, if Sajid Javid gets his way, by the time you read this we will have been ‘fully released’ from Covid Restriction.

June 8 at the British Motor Museum’s event at Gaydon. Under a clear blue sky and with the sun well and truly blazing away, the first Midlands Centre Super Natter took place at the British Motor Museum`s June Summer Gathering. A very good turnout of MGs, the biggest single marque present, made for a delightful evening. Picnics and gourmet burgers were consumed, and for some, large ice creams as well! It’s a wonderful event, so why not come along to one of the future Super Natters? The Midland Centre sail flags proudly flew in the gentle breeze under which members chatted away. The BMM put on a display of veteran cars that chugged amongst the hundreds of cars present. All contributed to a great summer atmosphere. The next one will be on Tuesday August 10. More information regarding tickets and entrance requirements will be announced on our Facebook page, Centre website and Centre Newsletter in advance of the event. So why not make a date to join us.

Mid-Summer is a really good time of year for top-down driving on our local roads. There is still a range of unknowns associated with COVID restrictions, but the hope is that events will be taking place as planned this month. The major outdoor gathering is in the car park of the Plough and Flail on Tuesday August 17. The pub will be serving food during the evening and MG enthusiasts who have had to stay apart will be able to come together for a good chat and to admire the cars on show. There should not be any need to pre-book. It would be good to see some of the new members with their cars who have joined the Club during the last 18 months. Then on August 29 and 30 you can bring your car to the spectacular historic race meeting at Oulton Park. The Gold Cup event brings together many grids of sports, saloon and racing cars from the 1960s and 1970s. Car clubs traditionally park in groups on the banking overlooking the end of the Avenue. To join the display, tickets can be bought from MSV before the event. They are half

The “Brooklands Two” Car Display on June 12 was a very successful event!
Brilliantly arranged under Covid regulations by Ian Ailes and Jon Glover, leaders of the Fairmile Natter, the display also included the MGCC Vintage Register celebrating their 60th, cars from the F Register marking their 25th anniversary and friends from the Waterloo Classic Group. In

price for drivers and passengers if the MGCC is selected from the drop-down menu during purchase. The Centre flag will be flying in the display area.
When the world was normal, the Wednesday lunch meetings were extremely popular, but got difficult to organise because the pubs were asking for pre-booking with exact numbers. A new approach is to gather at cafes which are much more informal with a change to Tuesdays. The first lunch will be on September 7 at a venue which will be displayed in good time on the Centre website.
Looking back to June, the Cockshoot Cup rounds three and four were held on the Silverstone Grand Prix Circuit. Both races were won by Ray Collier driving his ZR160 by a very small margin from Karl Green’s ZS. Class wins in both races were achieved by Mike Peters (Midget), Brian Butler (MGF) and Paul Wignall (ZR160). These three and Ray won the Tim Forwood Trophies for the combined best performances. Congratulations to all the drivers who took on and mastered the superb and demanding GP track. The final Cockshoot Cup Championship rounds are at Snetterton on September 12.

Events going forward include the “Splendid Summer Event” which takes place on Sunday August 8 2021 at the Kent & East Sussex Steam Railway, based at Tenterden TN30 6HE. There will be several feeder runs organised to the event so see full details on our websites or phone Chris Leigh for information on 01634 201145

The Shere Hill Climb takes place on Sunday September 5 complete with the SE Centre Display. Tickets are available at www.sherehillclimb.co.uk/tickets/

According to my laptop, it was in 2014 that I last missed the deadline for the South West Centre Safety Fast! Notes (nothing changes, right Andy?) – and 18 years since I first wrote them! How time flies.
Your committee’s attempts to run any events in 2021 have thus far been thwarted by Covid-19 (although, by the time these notes are published we will have hopefully managed our first grass autotest since 2019). As I don’t have much to report upon, I took a look back to August 2003 to see what I wrote in the notes back then. I publicised the Chew Valley Gymkhana, now called MGs on Grass Two and held at a different location, but still organised by Centre stalwart Dave Coppock. You will hopefully see a report in the notes next month. Next advert was for a Sunday lunch run organised by yours truly which was sadly not very well attended – it might be time to reinstate that type of event? The final call was for Wiscombe Hillclimb then, as it is now, our flagship event. Some of the details have changed, but the location remains stunning and it remains a

Our first meeting at The Chequers Inn, Daltonon-Tees was a great success with 17 members in attendance, many of whom sampled the excellent food on offer. Great to see old and new faces and old faces with different cars. Despite restrictions, we managed to enjoy a catch-up and run our first pride of ownership event. Come along on the first Thursday and see what you think. We are only committed for July and August while each party sees if we are a good fit, but the initial outlook is promising. If you order food make sure you have brought a good appetite – the portions are generous!
Meetings are the harbinger of events and whilst it will be too late to enter The Prince Bishops and St Cuthbert’s runs on August 1 (though do come along to see the cars finish on Palace Green , Durham around 3.00pm) entries are now open for the Old Speckled Hen Trial on Sunday September 5. Starting and finishing at the Allerton Court Hotel, Northallerton, the circular route of just under round of the MGCC Speed Championships amongst many others. The entry list for our 2021 event on September 11 is already over-subscribed, and it is too soon to predict whether spectators will be admitted. As usual, help will surely be required with marshalling – please contact Bruce Weston (brucemweston@gmail.com) if you are able to volunteer your time to support the organising team.
Returning to this August, we have been invited to the ‘Pip ‘n’ Jay Classique Road Run on Saturday 7, which starts and finishes at Burtle on the Somerset Levels. Anyone attending the Triumph & MG weekend on 14-15 and fancying a crack at the autotest is invited to join our team for the California Cup. And, finally, our Summer Picnic at the East Somerset Railway has been rescheduled for the 22nd. Details for all of these events can be found on the Centre website and Facebook page.
Assuming that the rules don’t change, we are looking forward to restarting ‘Natters’ in August. Keep an eye on the website, and give the Natter Leader a call before travelling any great distance. Apart from our events, the year 2003 was notable, in retrospect, for the appearance of Facemash. By 2014 it had become Facebook and the SW Centre had joined up. We now have about 2,250 followers and, in the last month alone, our posts have reached more than 5,000 people. If you are on Facebook, why not take a look? We don’t post a lot, just enough to keep you informed. We have moved away from printed documentation, but if you prefer older-school then you can sign-up for our monthly e-mail newsletter – details on (you’ve guessed it!) the website. I will finish with a photograph from our last visit to the East Somerset Railway in July 2017.
100 miles uses the lesser-known byways of North Yorkshire, viewing Abbeys, Castles, and Battlefields, stunning scenery with the odd sharp climb and ford just to spice things up! Entry online and pay by Bacs please, contact me for details. Photo this month shows me checking out said ford.
Now a quick appeal. Our Golden Jubilee Dinner will be held at the Hallgarth Manor just outside Durham on December 4 (put the date in your diary, I will be coming round to check!) We want to create a photo show of the last 50 years of the Centre, so if you have event photos of any era please get in touch. We have the technology to convert slides and photos to digital and are happy to do it for you, so get that dusty box down and see what treasures you have; contact Noel or me.
Some sad news for our longer-term members with the death of Con Riddle, stalwart of the Centre in the 1970s and 1980s, whose rebuild of his white TD set a standard for those times when older MGs were normally in what is now termed oily rag condition. His cheery demeanour, dry wit and engineering know-how ensured he will be fondly remembered by us all.
YORKSHIRE
Yorkshire is a “pretty big” county so, to ensure MGCC Members and MGs of all ages are catered for, there are seven individual MGCC Yorkshire Natters: North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, East Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, 24/39 Group, Vale of York and the Tiger Natters. Over the next couple of months I will detail each Natter here to give a basic idea of what you would find should you wish to join one in your area. Further details of activities, events, entry forms and Natter nights can be found at www.mgccyorkshire.co.uk
Vale of York Natter. - The “Vale of York Natter” was established by Ken Cothliffe and Mal Reeves to appeal to MGCC Members living in the Harrogate, York, and Northallerton triangle. To ensure members of the Natter can enjoy using their cars this Natter organises several major runs including the now-regular Heartbeat Run around the North Yorkshire National Park and the Canada Run round the Vale of York plus smaller events locally.
North Yorkshire
Natter –In spite of current Covid-related restrictions the North Natter members were able to enter organised events with some success. Keith Beningford drove his MG TC to first in Class at the Barbon Hillclimb on June 12 and Jeff Marsden (FIA MGB) and his son (GTS) were at Silverstone to claim mid field finishes in the Libre race. Jeff accepting his son is now quicker than him these days!! Paul Croft is progressing plans necessary for the Dales Run, a 70-100 mile run through the Yorkshire Dales on August 28 2021. 24/39 Group – After a successful Triple M Register annual Touring event in Yorkshire, the 24/39 Group was formed in 2008. Well, we seem to be up and running again despite the hiccough with Mike and Linda’s Annalong Run which will now take place on Sunday August 22.
The Social Committee, ie, “The Three Amigos” (Mike A, Mike D and Mike W) have been working hard to find something they think we should all enjoy and Mike Dowey came up with a scenic run to Whitehead on July 25 and we will report on that next month.
Mike Armstrong hasn’t been sitting on his laurels either; he has planned a visit to Glenariff in September for which details will be distributed shortly.
A point to note please: if you plan to go on one of these outings we must have a response from you in writing or by email by the date stated in order to stay in line with Covid regulations and the number of people allowed to meet. It also is helpful to any coffee house or similar if we can give them some indication of how many may use their facility.
We are hoping to resurrect the “Lunchtime Nosh” in the near future when our way of life is a bit more stable and look forward to seeing some of you again then.
We have noted from some of your comments that Sundays don’t suit but the majority find it preferable as it is not a working day and it gives them time for family and friends. Some of the others who go to church have an early morning
or evening service which they can attend either before or after the outing and we will not discount the ‘not Sunday please’ request.
