The Christmas Bulletin December 2017

End of Term By Deborah Stanley, Headteacher As we come to end of this year it is good to reflect on the activities of the autumn term. I was recently reading the speech from the school’s first Headteacher, Miss Pope, at the opening of the school in 1888. She talked about MGGS being a link in the chain between the very bottom - at the infant and Kindergarten schools - and reaching up to our universities. In 1888, MGGS took junior as well as secondary aged students. 130 years later we continue to be such a link. It does seem a long time since September when our current Year 7 joined us, but they have rapidly engaged in the life of the school both academically and socially. At the top end of the school many in Year 13 have spent the autumn applying to universities through UCAS, visiting various institutions, and are starting to receive offers. This last week of term we have welcomed back our previous cohort of Year 13 to celebrate their A level results and hear their reflections on their first few months at university, college, or in employment. In 1888 Miss Pope was encouraged that students wanted to come to MGGS because of their ‘love of learning’. This continues to be a theme of the school, and was clearly evidenced in our open events this autumn for entry into Year 7 and into the sixth form. As we spend this academic year celebrating MGGS’s 130 years some things in the life of the school remain constant, and well loved by students - for example, House Arts and Rag Week. However, we continue to see new developments and advances. This autumn this has seen MGGS become a ‘leading light’ Google School and hold its first, and highly successful, Christmas Fair which raised money both for charity and the school. As we look forward into 2018, we hope to see our first ever student visit to Nepal to visit our partner schools and are looking to gain re-accreditation as an Advanced Thinking School. Our anniversary celebrations will continue. In particular, in school for students on 19th January 2018 and then for all current and previous students and staff on Saturday 7th July, at our 130th celebration afternoon. May I take this opportunity to wish you and your family a peaceful and enjoyable time over Christmas and the New Year. Merry Christmas from Maidstone Grammar School for Girls

The Christmas Bulletin Governor News By Mrs A Pilgrim, Chair of the Governing Body

Now that we are in December with dark, cold mornings and evenings, the start of the autumn term seems a long time ago. MGGS is recognised as a welcoming, friendly place and I do hope that everyone who was new to the school in September, students and staff, now feels part of the MGGS family. This term is always busy with events such as open days, House Arts and now, as we approach the end of term, the carol service and Speech Day. Staff and students work hard to showcase the school and it was good to see the hall packed on open evening. We look forward to seeing many new faces in Year 7 next September. Occasions such as House Arts and the carol service show the school’s strong community spirit and the confidence and willingness with which students participate. They also show how hard the staff work to ensure that students’ education goes well beyond the classroom. The governors are proud to support the school and would like to thank the staff for all their work. My fellow governors have also been busy in school visiting subject departments and helping sixth formers with university applications and interview preparation. We are an active governing body with great ambitions of the school. A number of the governors are MGGS parents or Old Girls and they help to inform us both of school’s traditions and the needs of 21 century students. This autumn some of our governors have reached the end of their term of office and we are keen to recruit new parent governors. Do please consider whether you could help the school as a parent governor. If there are questions about the role, please contact our clerk so that I can give answers. st

Next year the school is 130 years old and I am sure we are all looking forward to the birthday events. In the meantime, I would like to give my best wishes to all for a Happy Christmas and a healthy New Year.

Charity News By Miss A Heppeler

This term students at MGGS have continued to show their generosity through their charity work. Forms have put on events such as a staff and sixth form dance off, cake sales, and film afternoons, and the RAG week and Christmas Market events were incredibly successful. We would like to thank all parents and carers who contributed towards our Christmas Appeals this year - the Salvation Army Christmas Present Appeal and the Homeless Care Maidstone “You Can Help” Appeal. Many gifts and food items were donated to both causes. A representative from the Salvation Army thanked us for the gifts we collected and said how lovely it was to meet some of our students. Thank you to all for being so generous and keep up the good work next term!

The Christmas Bulletin MGGS 130th Celebrations - December Update

As 2017’s RAG (raising & giving) week is underway, we reflect on the school’s proud history of fundraising. A report written for the opening of the new Buckland Road building in 1938 states that the fact that ‘the school is aware of its responsibility to others is evident since a sum of over £3,000 has been raised since 1912 for the support of Barnardo’s Home alone, besides generous contributions towards the various local social activities. The old girls maintain the tradition by supporting a cot at the West Kent Hospital’. The school continues to raise money through RAG week and form time charity activities for a range of deserving causes such as Oxfam, Lepra, Against Malaria, UNICEF, The Red Cross, Maidstone Homeless Care and, of course, for our partner schools in Nepal. RAG week continues to entertain and delight students and teachers alike. Looking back at years past, the lunchtime ‘shows’ have changed little and continue to showcase adverts & trailers, the staff pantomime and a parody of a current popular television programme. It remains to be seen who will be ‘fired’ in this year’s production of The Apprentice. Many of you will have fond memories of RAG week during your time at MGGS. We hope that the photographs below will serve as a reminder of the fun and laughter experienced during this special week. 1996

The Christmas Bulletin Starlight Cheerleading Success!

Anela G and Mia B in Year 9 and Amelia K in the Sixth Form are all part of Starlights Cheerleading and competed at Future Cheer - Winter Wonderland Dance and Cheerleading competition, which was held in Colchester, Essex, last weekend. This was the first competition of the season and saw some amazing results for the girls. Anela's Junior Pom, Junior Lyrical and Angela’s and Mia’s Junior Cheer team all won first place. Anela's Pom team was also awarded the title of Grand Champions with the highest score in all the junior dance categories. Anela's Junior level 3 stunt team performed well and was awarded second place. The snow in Essex prevented some athletes and teams from attending and on the Sunday, Mia was also unable to get to the competition to compete. Mia is a base and so the team needed another athlete for the stunts and pyramid. Knowing how important this competition was to his sister and her team mates, Anela's brother Ethan (Year 11 at OPGS) stepped in and helped his sister's team out so that they could compete. Up he stepped with zero cheer experience. An amazing act of generosity and solidarity to support Amelia and his sister’s team. They were really pleased to be awarded second place for Senior Cheer. Amelia's Senior level 2 Stunt Team "Platinum" won first place and they were also really excited to be awarded the title of Grand Champions with the highest score of the day for all stunt teams (1179).

Our congratulations to Anela, Mia, Amelia and indeed Ethan on such a fantastic achievement!

House News The past two terms have been extremely successful for us Danes; we’ve achieved a huge amount but above everything the best achievement has to be winning House Arts at the end of last term. We as house leaders couldn’t be more proud of our Danes with the amount of time and work they put in to make our performance absolutely amazing. This was the first time Danes have come 1st in House Arts in over thirty years so we were very emotional during the results. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part and helped us to produce our winning performance; we would especially like to thank Tori Simmonds and Abbey G for helping us with the musical side of things, and also say a huge thank you to Alexa B who created our amazing programme. Also this term our house took part in Interhouse netball and all our teams played brilliantly; a big well done to our year 8 and our year 10 teams who came first in their rounds. Thank you to everyone who played. Overall this term was incredible for us as a house but even more so for us as house leaders so again, thank you all for being so incredible and keep up the good work! Your very proud house leaders, Charlie, Rhiannon, Katie and Josh In term one of the academic year, Normans as a house have been very successful, with the help of our newly elected Deputy House Leader, Abbie B. We came 3rd in house arts and won best choral piece for our performance. We would never have been able to achieve this if it wasn’t for the amazing house members that we have. Everyone was so enthusiastic and put all of their effort into rehearsals as well as the final performance, giving up much of their free time to make it perfect. It was hard work for us all, but we would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone who took part, whether you sang, danced or helped out backstage. You are all incredible! We also came first in Inter-house Netball, after great efforts particularly from our Year 7 and Sixth Form teams. Lucy, Maddie, Laura and Abbie

The first school term of this year was exciting for us as House Leaders as it was the chance for us to put all our plans for House Arts into place and turn it into a physical performance. After a strong start with plenty of members keen to get involved, we set out to work on our piece, which was based on the theme of reflection. Vikings chose to focus the performance around body image and the unrealistic ideals society places on young people with songs such as Clown by Emeli Sande, Beautiful by Christina Aguilera, and Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson. We also had to sing a set song, and our own composed song. Overall, the songs, costumes, lighting and the performers all came together to make a performance we were extremely proud of and, although we didn’t end up placing, we did win Best Programme (with special thanks to Styliani and Victoria in Year 13). The second school term was time for Inter-house Netball, with each year competing against each other. As a house, we did very well with our Year 7 team coming 3rd, Year 8 4th, Year 9 5th, Year 10 3rd, Year 11 1st, and Sixth Form 4th. We would like to say a massive thank you to anyone who took part in either of these events in any way - we couldn’t have done any of it without you and we are super proud of you all! Have a lovely Christmas, and see you in January! Katie, Brooke, Bron and Adam

House News Despite how quickly the first term flew by, there are plenty of successes to celebrate within the Romans House. From running, to singing and dancing, these autumn weeks have been packed with an abundance of success from all corners of the Roman community. First of all, let’s not forget House Arts! Thanks to the determination and spirit of our house a fantastic 2nd place was awarded to Romans. As a highly anticipated event within the school calendar, House Arts is always a brilliant opportunity to showcase the vast array of talent our school, and our house has to offer. Not only were we successful in placing, but the award for ‘best original song’ for Alex, with the catchy ‘Spare A Thought’ and the well-deserved praise of Sophie’s choreography meant for a very happy house, with very happy leaders.

Through events such as House Arts, friendships are formed, and we are reminded of how much can be achieved through tenacity and collaboration. On behalf of all performers, we would like to thank the whole of Romans house, for their support during our performance - and for their cheering and praise when the results were being revealed. On top of this, our fantastic collaborative mentality was again revealed through participation in last week’s ‘Inter House Netball’ competition, where the spirit of House Arts shone through and the level of participation was again excellent, meaning the talent of our house was clear in matches. On behalf of the whole house, we would love to thank you for all your support and involvement in these last two terms, and we look forward to our next event as a house, and the exciting events this festive period will bring. Jenna, Alex, Madeleine and Sophie

Since the last newsletter so much has happened for the Saxons House! Firstly we would like to introduce our new Deputy House Leader, Khera H, who has been an amazing asset to our team. In term 6 last year we placed 1st in our Year 12 UN presentation, and we’ve had some great results in both the Inter-House Rounders and more recently Inter-House Netball. The past term has been very busy and we have thoroughly enjoyed working with so many fellow Saxons to create an uplifting singing House Arts Performance. We were so proud of everyone’s efforts and our final amazing performance that highlighted the importance of female empowerment and overcoming the struggles of body image. We are so grateful to everyone who got involved, and to those who gave us so much support. We hope you’ve all had as much fun as we have and we can’t wait for the rest of the year. Lots of Love, Amelia, Lucy, Steph and Khera Over the past two terms Britons came together collectively to put together a performance for House Arts 2017. This year’s theme was reflection so our focus was on the idea of not reflecting on your past and having regrets. Within our performance we had to put together a composition which was written and played by Ryan and Esme. We started off rehearsals by auditioning people in our house, and the amount of talent we saw was amazing. Although we didn't place we gained an award for ‘best sound’; this revolved around the harmonies we created and the pitch and execution of the sound we produced. We have also had inter-house netball, which is always a really fun event and we had a lot of laughs with our team members. Well done to everyone who participated. We would like to wish all of our fellow Britons an amazing Christmas and Happy New Year! See you next term. Love Allanah, Esme, Ryan and Megan.

The Christmas Bulletin Year 8 German Trip to Christmas Markets in Aachen! Frau Gibson writes: On 7th-8th December the German department took 44 lucky students off to experience a real German Christmas market in Aachen. The girls had an amazing time and you can see by the following excerpts from their trip reports how much fun they had.

Crystal L writes: I think that this trip to Aachen has been a valuable experience for me. It was both fun and educational. I got to use my German and experience more or less ordinary life in the city, and see more of the rich history of the area. Hearing German from native speakers was a very refreshing and interesting experience. In the Christmas Market, we also got to see more of German culture besides its language. The second best part was the food; my personal favourite was the Bratwurst (traditional German sausages). Being able to eat hot food in the cold weather was so good! We tried the different Aachener Printen (gingerbread) in the market, and bought some for Christmas ourselves. Katherine R writes: Aachen was a great experience and I would like to thank the teachers who came (and put up) with us. I had a great time and I would go again if I could.

Leah O writes: First of all Aachen was amazing and I highly recommend that you go to Aachen and visit the Christmas Market. Not only can you shop at the market but you can visit a wonderful cathedral and a treasury which is a museum. The treasury is very interesting as you can learn new things you didn’t know before. Most people I came across in Aachen spoke English but it is very good and helpful to speak German to them. We explored the massive Lindt chocolate factory shop! That was my favourite part. It was reduced as there was a sale and lots of people boughts bags and boxes of chocolate. I would just like to say thank you to all the teachers who took us to and from Germany! They picked a wonderful trip to go on and I’m very glad I went! I had a magnificent time and really want to experience everything again.

The Christmas Bulletin Christmas Markets in Aachen (continued)

Izzy W writes: The Hostel was very fancy, with en suite bathrooms and cosy beds. I would highly recommend it! We then walked to the Weihnachtsmarkt- the sights were fantastic. There were lots of well decorated shops and the Cathedral was very impressive! We then arrived in the town and went to a spa, where hot, mineral water (which smelt a bit!) was pumped up from the ground.

Nayana R writes: The trip to Aachen was a wonderful experience for me and for everyone who came, including the teachers. Even though the coach ride was long and tiring, it was definitely worth it as the Christmas market was the most magical thing I’ve ever seen and it became even more Christmassy when it started snowing ! I enjoyed this trip massively and I would like to thank all the teachers for giving me the best trip I have ever had at MGGS !!!!! Tiegan V writes: On the Eurotunnel, we found an empty carriage we could play in. Some of us even taught the teachers a dance. We all had an amazing time and I am very thankful to all the teachers and the coach driver for taking us. It is highly recommended you go there on a trip or holiday. It was one of the most amazing times in my life and the chocolate shop was the best part! Letters for the next Christmas Market trip to Aachen in 2018 should be sent to Year 7 via Parentmail in the summer term. Don’t miss out!

The Christmas Bulletin Drama Theatre Trips & Visits By Miss A-M

Stanley The school year started with a spooktacular trip to see The Woman in Black at the Fortune Theatre, London in October. There was much screaming and hiding of faces from our year 10 and 11 GCSE groups. The Woman in Black has been terrifying audiences in the West End for 28 years; it never fails to disappoint or make you jump and I have seen it 15 times!

In November we took our year 12 and 13 A level Drama and Theatre groups to see a new version of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull at the Lyric, Hammersmith. All the students were very moved by the performance; the ensemble cast gave stellar performances. This was also the last last trip that our Year 13 students would go on here at MGGS, and they were delighted with their free copies of the script which they could keep as a memento. In December Splendid Productions made their annual visit. They performed a creative adaptation of Franz Kafka’s Metamorphosis to MGGS and visiting Oakwood students. Splendid always aim to create high quality, professional, political theatre which is aimed specifically at young people. This year they got “their scrabbly little insect legs on Franz Kafka's chilling story of dislocation, mutation and isolation and transform it into a slithering, creeping, wriggling, delightful, comical, tragical, musical, physical theatrical adventure for everyone who has woken up wondering: has the world changed, or is it just me?” Year 10, 12 and 13 Drama students then had the opportunity to take part in actor led workshops which focused on Splendid’s adaptation of Kafka’s classic. Later in the academic year a group of Year 7 and 8 students will be heading up to London’s West End to see Annie. I am also in the process of organising an ‘Introduction to Musical Theatre’ workshop for interested year 8 students, so watch this space! It is so important for students to see live theatre and have an opportunity to work with theatre professionals; not only do they have to analyse and evaluate shows that they have been to see in their final written examinations but it also helps to spark creativity. Exams In November and December we had the first round of practical examinations for year 11 and 13. Both year groups had to create devised pieces linked to a selection of stimuli. This is no mean feet as students have to create the storyline, perform, organise set, lighting sound and costume. Well done to all those involved! Production This years school production is a selection of Grimm’s fairy tales. Auditions took place in October and we had a record number of students audition; well over 100. After the success of Oliver! both Miss Lewis and I wanted to put on something completely different. This year’s show will incorporate acting, choreographed movement, dance, puppetry and much more. Performances will take place on Wednesday February 7th and Thursday February 8th. Tickets will go on sale in January. We hope to see lots of you there!

The Christmas Bulletin A Level German Trip to the British Film Institute Abbey G in Y12 writes: On Friday 26th November, a group of year 12 and 13 students travelled to the British Film Institute in London to attend a day dedicated to helping A Level German students understand German cinema. The day revolved around the film “Goodbye Lenin!”, which we study as part of our course. First, we had a very interesting lecture by Caren Willig on the history of Germany and how this impacted upon film. During the lecture, we were shown clips from different films, varying from the early 20th century to much more recent films. We were presented with a number of questions to answer about each clip to help us focus on different aspects of the film e.g. how has music been used to add to the atmosphere created? We were then asked by the lecturer to volunteer our answers. This was very challenging, as the whole lecture was primarily in German and we were expected to answer in German; however, this lecture helped us gain more vocabulary, more knowledge on German film history and confidence in our speaking and listening skills. We then had a well-earned lunch break, complete with Frau Gibson’s Stollen which she kindly brought along for us! After lunch, we were given a brief overview of the context in which “Goodbye Lenin!” is set, and we were then able to watch the film on the big cinema screen. The analysis of film which we had completed in our previous lecture really helped us look at “Goodbye Lenin!” in a much more critical way. Overall, I think this day was very useful in helping me understand more about German cinema, and was also very engaging and enjoyable. Grace S-M in Y13 writes: Our trip to the British Film Institute was an excellent opportunity to be immersed in our target language of German for a full day. The journey through the history of German film gave a truly valuable insight into our topic, with clips from the black and white silent film era covering background which goes beyond the curriculum. The speaker talked consistently in German with key vocabulary useful for our topic on film, while also making sure what she said was understood fully. The experience was also challengingly interactive, encouraging us in small groups to discuss questions and then feed back to the numerous other schools filling up almost an entire cinema theatre. It was truly exciting to see the future of foreign languages in our country represented in this collaborative experience. We were especially lucky that the film screened was ‘Goodbye Lenin’, which we study for our course, the big screen giving ample opportunity not only to refresh our memories, but also to enjoy certain features which can only be fully appreciated on a wider scale. Overall the trip was highly successful, as an opportunity to learn and enhance our knowledge, engaging in the target language throughout.

The Christmas Bulletin Year 13 Feedback on Focus Day - December 2017

The focus day on Tuesday the 5th of December on driving awareness was one of the most emotive but informative focus days we have had. We started off with different sessions on the risks of driving, including an activity about knowing stopping distances travelled at 30 mph of which we had to estimate by walking the distance. Not only was this focus day engaging but it also made me recognise how cautious I should be of risks as a driver. To finish the day off we also had some external speakers talk to us about their experiences surrounding dangerous driving, making the overall message especially poignant as we were faced with an actual victim of a car crash. Millie I Our focus day was about driving and the safety around it. It included speakers who came in to tell us about their experiences including a paramedic and someone who was involved in the accident who has to manage the long-term effects of the incident. It was very emotional as well as informative. During this day, I also learnt lots of things about driving including stopping distances and that you can improve your own reaction time just by practising it and in time this will make you a better driver. I also found out that even if you are a safe and careful driver, you need to be aware of other drivers who are around you, who may not be so careful. The Development Trust News ‘Let There Be Light’

As you may be aware, over the last couple of years we have drastically improved the stage lighting systems in the main hall which has really brought our school productions and events to life, not to mention the added benefits it gives to our drama and dance departments. However, we are now at a stage where we desperately need to replace the ageing power distribution systems for the stage lights which are over 30 years old and they are no longer fit for purpose. We need to complete this project in order to be able to use the features of a modern stage lighting system again. We are going to launch a fundraising campaign entitled ‘Let there be light’ which will contribute towards the £20,000 required to complete these works. Please look out for details of forthcoming events, starting with a "hoodie" day on 19th January 2018 to celebrate our 130th anniversary. Students will be allowed to wear hoodies in return for a donation of £1.30 (can you see what we did there?). If they have a MGGS 130th hoodie it will be a great opportunity to wear it, although this will not be compulsory.

130th Birthday Party

Speaking of our anniversary, we are busy planning our 130th birthday party to be held on 7th July 2018 from 2-5pm at MGGS. Students past and present are very welcome to join in the celebrations with their families and we are very much looking forward to seeing you there.

Your News

The Development Trust is not just about raising money, we are also keen to hear news from our ex students too. If you were, or a member of your family was once a student at MGGS and you have news to share, please email us at DTO@MGGS.org. Thank you for your continued support.

Ella W Year 9

Lily S and Eleanor R Year 10

Mon frère a trouvé qu'ils étaient dégoûtants!

Abbey G – Year 12

Rashmi K – Year 10

Fariha S – Year 10

Angharad G- Year 10
