Maidstone Grammar School for Girls Non sibi sed omnibus
The Spring Bulletin March 2018
End of Term Message by Miss Stanley, Headteacher
This has been a very successful term for the school, with highlights including the fantastic school production and the wonderful dance evening. These events again evidenced the significant level of talent our students have within the creative arts subjects, with the snow days and the snow day photo competition being further examples. Indeed, we are now at an early stage of investigating whether we can use some of the photos to create MGGS Christmas cards. We have also, this term, celebrated the achievements of some of our alumni. In particular, we were delighted when Lizzy Yarnold became the first British Olympian to retain her gold medal over two consecutive winter olympics. At the GCSE presentation, our guest speaker was Catherine Wyatt, who currently works at Reuters Newsagency, and who gave news of a number of her contemporaries.
Both Lizzy and Catherine were previous head students. The end of term 4 always sees the change from the current head students in Year 13, to our new head students in Year 12. I want to thank Beth, Bradley, Eleanor, Katie and Steph for all their hard work this year for the school, and to wish Abbey, Lily, Rhiannon, Lydia and Emily all the best for the coming year as they take on their extra responsibilities. As we continue to celebrate our 130th anniversary let me quote from Miss Barnes (Headteacher 19511970). Sixty years ago at the speech day in 1958 she told her audience on that occasion: “We need the best - in effort, in honest and hard thinking - that each of us can give. Sixty years on, we agree with her wholeheartedly; the curriculum will have changed of course, but our core values remain very much the same. Finally, I am delighted to inform you that Mr Horstrup has been appointed as Headteacher of Dover Grammar School for Boys, with effect from September 2018. Our congratulations go to him on his appointment. He will go with our very best wishes. As a school we will be appointing a new Deputy Headteacher during next term. I wish you all a peaceful and happy Easter holiday.

Congratulations to all of the winners and well done to the Year 7s for taking part!

The Spring Bulletin Governors’ News by Mrs Pilgrim, Chair of the Governing Body
So much has been packed into this busy school term that Christmas seems a time past. Many thanks to all involved in the numerous events and visits. Governors were pleased to be invited to the GCSE prize giving in February and it was good to share in the celebration of such excellent exam results. Our students are a credit to their parents and teachers.
I am reluctant to praise specific events because I know how hard staff and students have worked in all areas of school life. However two examples, the school production and the dance evening, show how our students excel beyond the purely academic curriculum. There have also been new events such as the careers fair to inform students and encourage their ambitions and of course various visits, some abroad. I know that events and extra-curricular programmes do not happen without the dedication of the school staff and I would like to thank all most sincerely. We are also indebted to the PFA for its support in helping so many events run smoothly. In addition to the public events governors have been in school supporting departments and other activities. The governors do try to be approachable and we welcome two new parent governors, Kala Pathy and Fredereik Chatfield, to the governing body at the end of this term. If anyone is interested in the work of our governing body, do please approach our clerk or one of the governors.
After this busy term I do wish everyone a restful Easter holiday. I know that examinations will dominate life for many in the summer term and wish you all the best of luck.
Careers Update by Miss Rhodes, Careers and Higher Education Co-ordinator
Careers Fair 21st February at MGGS On 21st February every student at MGGS took part in our Careers Fair: we were lucky enough to have representatives from 46 different companies and industries present including the NHS, House of Fraser, AXA PPP, Marriott Hotels, Specsavers, The Navy, Architecture, Osteopathy, and Veterinary. Each year group was assigned a visit slot so that all students got the opportunity to visit the main hall and speak to the exhibitors. The exhibitors were incredibly impressed with our students, praising their politeness and their excellent questions and inquisitive nature. Hopefully this event has served to inspire students and to help them understand more about the range of career options open to them for the future. National Apprenticeship Show 21st March Although the snow prevented us from attending the UK University and Apprenticeship Search Fair on Friday 2nd March, we were able to find a suitable substitute visit for students. On 21st March we took a group of Year 12 students to the Kent Showground for the Southeastern National Apprenticeship Show. This gave students the opportunity to learn more about apprenticeship options and to speak to a range of companies, including Mercedes Benz, EY, Greene King, Parenta, Brakes and The Army, about their vacancies. Apprenticeships have become an excellent alternative to university study and are increasingly popular amongst our sixth form students; hopefully this event has helped to inspire Year 12 and to give them a clearer idea of their post-18 plans.

The Spring Bulletin PE News by Mrs Robbins, Head of PE
Rowing The MGGS rowing team has continued its amazing success at both the Kent School’s Final and the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships. At the Kent championships we had five students qualify for the individual finals and three teams qualify for the relay finals with, two of these teams competing against each other in the senior girls categories. Hannah R had an amazing individual race where she was narrowly pipped to the post by one of her club members seeing her win the silver medal in the senior girls category and Niamh M placed 2nd in the Year 9 girls final. The relays proved to be very exciting: the senior girls A team won the gold medal and won the race by over 200m and the senior girls team B team came 3rd. MGGS dominate the medal podium. The Year 9 team dug their heels in and rowed their socks off to achieve a silver medal in their relay. Huge congratulations go to all those pupils who took part. Our success at the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships has grown and grown. We had some absolutely fantastic results this year. Hannah R in Year 12 was crowned National Champion in the senior girls event beating over 200 other competitors and the senior girls boatrace won the silver medal making them the second best team in the country. The Year 7s, 8s and 9s who competed put in solid performances and we were very proud of them all. This is such an exciting event which the pupils love to be a part of and we would like to congratulate all of them who took part. Well done girls!

The Spring Bulletin Year 7 Netball A Team Maidstone Schools’ Champion Year 7 took part in their first secondary school tournament with three MGGS teams competing. All three teams played exceptionally well and it was lovely to see such a high standard of netball being played with so many students being physically active. Seven schools from the Maidstone area competed in the tournament. The teams play four teams in their pool, in attempt to qualify for the semi-final.
Football Round Up
U12 The U12s have had a fantastic season winning all their district league games and smashing friendlies 11-0! The highlight of their season so far was at Medway Park on 6th February 2018 where they participated in the Kent Futsal Finals and won every single match convincingly with some exceptional goals by Taylor B. The girls will now go onto the South East Regional rounds to represent Kent. Good luck! Team: Caitlin L, Megan K, Taylor B, Libby J, Neve C, Jessica B, Eleora L, Amelia A U13 The U13s had an awesome season for the first time playing together. They beat Invicta Grammar School in the second round of the Kent Cup 3-1 and then progressed all the way through to the semi-finals. The semi-final was against Highworth away in cold, muddy conditions. It was a well fought match but unfortunately ended 0-0. The score remained after extra time so it went down to penalties. The pressure was unfortunately too much and the girls lost. However, they can hold their heads up high and be proud of an amazing season. U14 Yet again the U14s have had a phenomenal season and fantastic runs in both the cups as well as the Futsal competitions. In the ESFA cup they beat Rainham 7-2 and smashed Mascalls 10-0 but then unfortunately narrowly lost to Valley Park 3-2 which was an exciting match to watch but not the end result we had hoped for. After winning the Kent Cup last year the girls were buzzing to get their hands on the trophy again this year. The campaign started well winning against Mayfield Grammar 1-0 and beating St Paul’s Academy 5-0. In the 3rd round it was a tougher match against Hayes; however with true grit and determination the girls won 5-4 which was a fantastic result. The quarter finals saw us against Highworth who the girls beat in the final last year. It was a close match with goals flying in on both sides increasing the heart rate of all the spectators!

The Spring Bulletin U14 continued The match ended 3-3 after extra time and went into penalties. The pressure was on but Gabi J rose to the occasion and was outstanding in goal to save the opposition’s shots and send the girls into the semi-final of the Kent Cup. The semi-final was a one-sided show where the girls easily put 10 goals past Marsh Academy to set up the final against Valley Park. On Friday, 2nd February at the Gallagher Stadium under the floodlights the girls put in a fabulous performance but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to win, narrowly losing 1-0. It is an outstanding achievement to get to the Kent Cup Final two years in a row so the girls should be extremely proud of what they have achieved. Team: Jess A, Maia H, Hayley B, Brianna A, Mollie W, Charlotte W (c) , Katie S, Amelia B, Sienna L, Lily N, Milly D, Gabi J, Emma H, Ella W, Molly M. On 6th Feb at Medway Park the U14 participated in the Kent Futsal Finals after beating Mascalls in the qualifying rounds. They were undefeated through the whole tournament and are now crowned as Kent Futsal Champions, well done girls! They will now go through to represent Kent in the South East Regional competition. Team: Mollie W, Brianna A, Hayley B, Emma H, Gabi J, Charlotte W and Ella W. U15 The U15s had an amazing start to the ESFA cup, as they beat Harris Academy 2-1 in a thrilling match and then was drawn away to Cornelius Vermuyden in Essex where on a windy afternoon they secured the 1-0 win needed to go through to the fourth round of the cup. With limited players due to injury, they faced a strong Bexleyheath Academy; however the girls were determined to win the match and held out to win 21. In the fifth round, without a full squad, they faced a very strong Stanley Park School and unfortunately lost and got knocked out of the cup. It has been a good season for the U15s with some excellent performances. U16 The U16s had a good run this season making it to the quarter finals of the Kent Cup which in itself is a fantastic achievement. They enjoyed a brilliant win against Harris Academy 4-2 to set them up on their way. Unfortunately they lost to Highworth in the quarters. The U16s struggled with commitment of some players this season and a lot of injuries. Hopefully next season they will have a full squad.
Sports Relief @ MGGS!
Students at MGGS enjoyed participating in Just Dance and a Bench Ball tournament to recognise Sport Relief. Students from Year 7, 8 and 9 put some pennies in the pot and then the tournament got underway. It was lovely to see the mixture of year groups working together to win.

U.Dance Medway 2018
On Sunday 25th February two of our dance groups performed at The Brook Theatre Chatham for U.Dance Medway. Our Years 7-8 Intermediate Academy and Years 9-10 Contemporary group successfully gained their places through a video entry round and performed brilliantly - with the Artistic Director of the dance company organising the event commenting on the high quality of the dances.
As part of the performance, the dancers learned a curtain raiser and a finale to be performed with other dance groups from Kent along with the opportunity to perform at a different venue. It was a great day of dance for all involved.

The Spring Bulletin Chance to Dance 2018
On Thursday, 22nd March a number of MGGS dancers travelled to The Stag Theatre Sevenoaks to perform in a dance event open to schools throughout Kent called ‘Chance to Dance’. We had two solo performers (Jamie B and Isabelle S) and two group performances (Contemporary and Street) at the event and a member of the audience commented on the superb standard shown by our dancers. Well done to Melissa P and Olivia B for their fantastic choreography of the group pieces. Well done to all the dancers involved for their excellent dancing.
Regional Dance Champions - MGGS Groups placed 1st, 2nd and 3rd! MGGS dance groups were hugely successful in the South East Regional Finals of the National Schools Dance competition ‘The Great Big Dance off’ on 12th March 2018.
We had four groups qualify to compete. Our Years 9-10 group Spectrum placed 3rd in the KS4/5 category with a dance on Female empowerment; our Years 10-13 group G-Fix contemporary placed 2nd with their take on Red Riding Hood. And... with an emotive dance on bereavement, our Years 7-8 Group Intermediate Academy came 1st in the KS3 category! Fantastic achievements all round - well done to all involved! Intermediate and G-Fix now qualify for the national finals on 2nd July in Cheltenham. Thank you to the choreographers for their hard work and creative vision - Amelia K, Ele M, Isabelle S, Allanah M and Esme D. Thank you to all the dancers for their fantastic performances.

The Spring Bulletin Drama Events and Trips by Miss Stanley, Head of Drama 2018 kicked off with the Sixth Form Extra pantomime ‘Peter Pan’ which was performed by a number of our Year 12 students to 120 very enthusiastic Brunswick House pupils. Sixth Form Extra is a new Enrichment programme for Year 12 students, and the Panto (which we very much hope will become a MGGS tradition) was the first community event to take place. Not only did our students perform in it we also had a team of scriptwriters, directors, set designers and lighting and sound technicians helping to make it a fun packed afternoon for our visitors.
February saw over 50 Year 7 and 8 students visit London’s West End to watch A nnie with Meera Syal as the villainous Miss Hannigan. This tale of hope still proved relevant for a 2018 audience as we were transported to New York City. The catchy songs and crafty characters engaged our pupils as we willed Annie to get her happy ending. The girls left feeling inspired and uplifted for future Drama work, if not for cleaning their rooms! Another big event to take place in February was the annual school production. Oliver! was such a great success in 2017 both Miss Lewis and I wanted to do something completely different. We wanted to create something more intimate and atmospheric, that is how Grimm Tales came about. Originally we were only going to tell three tales but due to the large number of students audition (over a hundred) we pushed it to four. Each tale was told in a slightly different way, making the most of the audience sitting in a thrust formation (on three sides of the stage) but all relied on the students working together as an ensemble in order to transport our audiences into different worlds full of magic, heroes, heroines, villains and strange creatures through the use of music, lighting, physical theatre and puppetry . In March the final GCSE Drama and A level Drama and Theatre practical exams took place. Both Year 11 and Year 13 performed scripted pieces to visiting examiners. Well done to all those that took part, both Year 11 and 13 have now completed 60% of their course, it’s all about the written exam now ladies! A new Sixth Form Extra group put together another performance in March. This time they were tasked with creating a Theatre in Education (TIE) piece and workshop. The group which was made up of eighteen students decided that they wanted to create something aimed at Year 9 students that addressed issues such as ‘being yourself’ and ‘problems caused by social media’. Both the performance and workshop went down well with 9A who came to watch and take part. Term 4 ended with year 10 GCSE Drama and Year 12 A level Drama and theatre students going to see Of Mice and Men at The Assembly Hall in Tunbridge Wells. Originally written by John Steinbeck this American classic was brought to life by Selladoor Productions. This brand new show promised to ‘bring to the stage a magical and imaginative story about trying to hold on to your dreams and friendships during fiercely tough times and a faceless destiny.’ It certainly didn’t disappoint. A group of Year 7 and 8 students will also be heading to the Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury in April to see a new version of the Jungle Book. Finally, as you all know MGGS celebrates its 130th this year. As part of the celebrations on Saturday, July 7th the Drama Department will be directing a number of scenes taken from A Midsummer Night’s Dream in order to help celebrate our very own ‘Fairy Palace’. Auditions will be held next term!

Parliament Trip ‘press release’: David Blunkett Exclusive by Mrs Crozier, Head of History Department
On Monday, 19th March, 20 Year 12 Politics students set out in the snow to the seat of our democracy, Parliament. In the public gallery of the House of Commons, we heard a junior minister grilled on Russian donations to the Conservative Party by Margaret Hodge and Yvette Cooper. In the Lords, the Select Committee was hearing evidence on the impact of Brexit. Lords from across the Chamber agreed that the UK needed to continue to work with European countries to tackle human trafficking. The most exciting part of the day was 'Political Speed-dating', where Lords, MPs and parliamentary civil servants were grilled by teams of four students David Blunkett with Lizzie S, Henry T, for just a few minutes at a time. All of the contributors were Tegan W, Lauren J, Niamh S. incredibly forthcoming, with Mark Tami, MP (Lab) openly expressing his dismay at voters in his Welsh constituency turning the Lib Dems and then to UKIP, whilst Baroness Uddin spoke passionately about the importance of community activism and how Human Rights movements should avoid becoming fragmented in the face of inter-sectionality. Liam Fox, Secretary of State for International Trade had to leave early for his flight to Hong Kong, however, the highlight for many was their time with Lord Blunkett who spoke extremely openly about the causes of the popularity of Jeremy Corbyn, why he wished he had been more radical in government in relation to devolution and how he believes that, in a global economy, governments are more 'enablers' than Ellen Crozier and James Wilkins with: 'enforcers'. Lord Blunkett and Baroness Uddin asked us to keep Madeleine A, Lois F, Priyana G, Imogen H, in touch in relation to their campaign to raise the profile of Emily H, Lauren J, Louise J, Molly L-M, Citizenship in schools. As Lizzie S commented, 'What surprised Joshua L-E, Niamh P, Niamh S, Elizabeth S, us most was that they were really normal. We could see ourselves Casper T, Aimee T, Henry T, Tegan W, Evie W, Molly W, Eleanor W. in their shoes in a few years time.' Especial thanks should go to Mr Wilkins for his seamless organisation of what proved to be an
A Level Religious Studies Revision Conference Trip
On the 22nd March Year 12 and 13 RS students travelled to London for an A level Religious Studies conference. The day was thoroughly engaging and helpful, consisting of talks focusing on particular philosophical questions, such as “Is it wrong to believe in a God whose existence can’t be proven?”, and revision tips that will be very valuable when revising for A Level examinations. Both Dr Peter Vardy (former Vice Principal of Heythrop College, University of London) and his wife Charlotte Vardy (Theology and Philosophy teacher) lectured at the event and they were very interesting to listen to. Overall, it was a Dr Peter Vardy with (l-r) Katie K, Abigail P, great day and we all acquired new revision skills and knowledge that Magda F, Emily J, Jasmine S, Charlotte W, Ella J. will aid us in our studies. By Charlotte W, Year 12.

The Spring Bulletin Year 10 FMSP Maths Feast by Mrs Squibb, Head of Mathematics Department
On Monday, 19th March fourteen of our most able Year 10 mathematicians took part in the FSMP Maths Feast. Rearranged from snow week they gathered in the main hall ready for 10am to take part in a number of rounds of challenging maths activities. The competition was for teams of students and our four teams were competing against teams from other schools. Our teams were successful in some rounds and eventually won the overall competition!
Here are some thoughts from Grace H: “I think that the Year 10 Maths Feast was a very enjoyable, educational experience for all involved. There were many intriguing, unique puzzles that helped to enrich our ability to problem solve. It also provided an opportunity to meet new people from other schools and to work cohesively in teams to complete many of the puzzles. Our team worked diligently to complete difficult brain teasers that challenged our mathematics skills. I think the Maths Feast was a great experience that taught us how to tackle problem solving questions successfully.
UKMT Intermediate Mathematics Challenge
Following the success of our sixth form students in gaining a total of 1 gold, 8 silver and 26 bronze certificates from 60 entrants, our two top sets in Year 11, accompanied by a very able Year 9 student, sat the intermediate Maths Challenge in February. Seven of them achieved the gold standard and 5 of those were invited to take part in the follow-on round for which we are still awaiting results. A further 7 students will receive a silver award; 26 Year 11 students and the Year 9 student all gained sufficient marks to be awarded bronze certificates. Our congratulations go to all of them for their success in answering the problems they were set.

The Spring Bulletin Years 10-13 Joint German and History Berlin Trip by Mr Rogers, Teacher of History
Leaving on a wet February morning, 30 History and German students from KS4 and KS5, accompanied by Frau Gibson, Frau O’Leary, and Mr Rogers, departed for the colder climes of Berlin. Over the 4 days in Germany’s capital, students engaged with local German culture and visited sites specifically relevant to their historical and language education. Upon landing, the students embarked on a tour of Berlin’s thousand year history at the Story of Berlin museum, before visiting the Reichstag, East Side Gallery, the DDR Museum, the Topography of Terror, Alexanderplatz, and the TV tower and Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp on the latter days. The trip provided students with a dynamic insight into life in Germany’s capital city and the changes that have taken place over the last hundred years. In the words of Grace, Charlotte, and Nathan in Year 13: “The Berlin trip was a really informative and fun experience. The History students were able to learn proactively about their course, because of the visits to different museums, but also empathetically, when they visited the Holocaust Memorial and Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. The German students were able to immerse themselves in the culture of their target language with lots of opportunity for independent engagement with regards to food, shopping and interactive museum exhibits. The overlap with the German history relevant to both departments involved in the trip was also very well balanced. The information acquired was seamlessly applicable to both the History students’ and the German students’ cultural topics.” “I found the Berlin trip very interesting through going to a number of different museums about the story of Berlin all the way through to The Topography of Terror which is about the rise of the Nazis. On the other side we saw their culture through going to the East Side Gallery and going to a number of Berlin's "Platz's" (squares). On the last day, it was a bit of a more relaxed and chill day as we went to the Ritter Sport Chocolate Factory where we got to get our own personalised chocolate bars made and we went to KaDeWe (the German version of Selfridges). It was great seeing different parts of Berlin and had an amazing time.” The trip was a joint venture between MGGS’s MFL and History departments and it is hoped it will become an annual event available to all History and German KS4 and KS5 students.

The Spring Bulletin Computer Science Trip to Bletchley Park The National Museum of Computing On Monday 26th February, 44 GCSE and ALevel Computer Science students visited the National Museum of Computing at Bletchley Park, home of ‘The Codebreakers’. During this visit we learnt about how Mathematics helped to reduce the Second World War by a number of years and how Alan Turing and his team built computers to make cracking the German coded messages possible. Students also undertook some practical programming sessions by coding a new version of Artificial Intelligence, similar to Siri and remaking the classic Snake computer game on 1980's BBC computers. During the tour of the museum the highlights included seeing a working Colossus computer that helped to crack the German codes during the 2nd World War and WITCH, the oldest working computer in the MGGS Computer Science students program the oldest world! working computer in the world @TNMOC

The Spring Bulletin Development Trust News by Mrs Brewer, Development Trust Officer ‘Let There Be Light’
We are doing extremely well with our fundraising campaign and hope to be able to replace the power distribution system for the stage lights in the Main Hall during this academic year. More news on this and on our next campaign to follow next term, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support so far.
Battle of the Bands
Huge thanks to Adam R and to Kieran H for all of their hard work organising Battle of the Bands. The event took place on Monday evening and featured some extremely talented students. Year 12 duet ‘Basics’ formed of Charlotte W and Liv M played first, followed by the Year 12 band ‘Adam's Angels’ formed of Adam R, Charlotte C, Josh L-E, Tessa W, Ellie W, Martha L and Kieran H who also played songs from his guitar solo repertoire. Pulling the evening to a close, sister duo ‘Perception’ formed of Jenna F and Georgia F performed covers and an original song written by Georgia. Thank you to all that attended, those who helped organise and those who went unseen, Liv B, Niamh H and the AV Tech Team, providing invaluable assistance behind the scenes. An amazing time was had by all! The event raised £177.73.
GloJam
GloJam was another great success with students and staff alike. Allanah M, Olivia B and Sophie C did a fantastic job of choreographing the routines for all to follow. The Main Hall was a sea of neon colours as the students waved their glow sticks to the sounds of Jennifer Lopez and Paloma Faith! Watch this space for GloJam 2 next year and perhaps even a version for the parents/carers too! The event raised a total of £157.38. View the video via https://youtu.be/

The Spring Bulletin Half Marathon Josh This article has been received by one of Josh’s fellow students and reads: “Year 12 student, Josh L-E has undertaken an immense challenge the past month, running a half marathon every weekend to raise money for the Heart of Kent Hospice. He started at Brighton setting a time of 1:44:59 and proceeded to run Eastbourne, Dartford, Hastings (in the snow!) and finished at Liverpool last weekend with a new personal best (PB) of 1:31:44! He is fundraising through … https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/josh-llufrioelliott1 and is still looking for donations! The running doesn't stop here; he will be undertaking the prestigious British 10K in July for the Hospice. Congratulations and we wish Josh the best of luck!” Josh’s father commented, “In Hastings we were ICE cold! It felt like -7 in the wind. Josh has a heart of gold and I’m very proud of him.” MGGS would like to add its congratulations and wish Josh all the best in his future runs.
U14 Girls’ Cup Final - Maidstone United Football Team We are delighted to hear that on Sunday 25th March Charlotte W and Evie W both in Year 9 played in the Maidstone United football team that won the Kent FA Girls’ U14 Cup Final, which was played at the Gallagher Stadium in Maidstone. They defeated Thanet Colts 5-0. Evie played in central defence and as can be seen from the scoreline prevented Thanet scoring with her pace and strong tackling. Charlotte was in central midfield and helped control the game with her vision and accurate passing to the forwards. The team is also well on its way to winning their league with an undefeated record and also has the Kent League cup final to look forward to in May. Huge congratulations to both Charlotte and Evie!

Abbey G - Y12 A Tradition of Excellence Buckland Road, Maidstone, Kent ME16 0SF

The MFL Bulletin Nepal
