SplendOR is based out of Quebec, Canada. We first opened our doors from a small venue, back in 1999. Today we have locations in 42 countries across the globe. Our passion and perseverance can be tasted in our delightful gold-infused chocolates.

What is Cacao?

The scientific name for cacao is Theobroma Cacao, named so in 1753 by the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus. Theobroma translates to “food of the gods,” and “cacao” is derived from the Mayan name for a tree “kakaw”. It is believed that the cacao tree is originally from the Upper Amazon area, which now includes parts of Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. It has since spread north, perhaps with some help from the Amerindians, across the Andes and then into Central America, where it was assimilated into their culture and diet. In the early 1500s, cacao had become deeply rooted into culture and mythology. It was mixed with maize and spices, its seeds and beans were used as currency, it was consumed by rich 04

merchants and warriors, and was made into a beverage that was heavily consumed by royalty. Spaniards altered this native beverage. They replaced the maize with sugar, and added cinnamon and vanilla. Over the years, this recipe became popular throughout Europe, which they coined “chocolate”. It eventually spread throughout the globe. Cacao trees grow best in shade and as such, early attempts at growing them on large plantations, like sugar cane, proved difficult. It is well-suited for small family-run farms and home gardens. Today, about 80%–90% of the world’s cacao is produced on farms no larger than 7 acres.

Amazingly, eating gold extracts isn’t just an exquisite affair, but it also has some marvelous health benefits. This indulgent addition to your food will give you even more reason to love gold. Gold leaves and flakes are prepared by hammering and pounding the gold-metal sheet repeatedly until it reaches a thickness of 1/8000 of a millimeter.

Safe for consumption, our gold is 24 karat pure gold. Gold has long been used for medicine, dentistry, and as a food ingredient, since ancient times. Edible gold is used in Ayurveda and Indian royal culture. It is believed to improve health and boost cognitive skills, when mixed with certain elements.

Always dreamed of a chocolate tasting? Come try it out with our gold-infusion blends. Now you can schedule events alone, or with a group of up to 8 people. You can even turn it into a week-long affair!
