Master Health Check-Up Unit Master Health Check-up unit deals with the preventive and curative aspects of Medicine of the public and also caters to the health needs of various public and private sector companies by performing the pre-employment checkups of new recruits and the annual health check up of the employees and their spouse, which has become mandatory for the companies under ISO requirements. During the period July 2011 to September 2011, a total of 360 cases were examined in the Master Health Checkup Unit Quotations have been called from us by ‘The Nagarjuna Oil Corporation Limited’ (NOCL), Kayalpattu, Cuddalore, an upcoming oil refinery project of Rs.1500 crore investments. Also Foseco India Limited, Mettupalayam, Puducherry has called quotation from us for their annual check-up of their employees.

“Tamil Nadu - Chief Minister Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme (Tn –Cmchis) Honourable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has introduced a scheme called “Tamil Nadu - Chief Minister Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme [Interim Period] TN-CMCHIS w.e.f. 05.09.2011. This replaces the erstwhile Insurance Scheme. A MOU has been signed during August, 2011 between the project Director, Tamil Nadu Health Systems Society, Chennai and Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute, Puducherry. The Scheme covers 204 procedures for eligible members and their families during the Interim Period [i.e 3 months], till the new Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Scheme is put in place. Our Hospital has been empanelled to conduct surgery for the cases relating to General Surgery, Neuro Surgery, Orthopaedics, Radiology and few cases under CTVS and Cardiology. The scheme has started functioning in our Hospital from 15.09.2011 onwards.

International Conference on “Students’ Mental Health: Issues and Challenges” An International Conference on “Students’ Mental Health: Issues and Challenges” was organized by Department of Applied Psychology, Pondicherry

India, our mother nation, celebrated her 65th Independence Day on 15th August 2011. This day was observed at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, Pondicherry with patriotic vigor and sincerity.The day’s program started with the unveiling of the statue of our Nation’s Father, Mahatma Gandhiji. The beautiful depicted statue, near the college block entrance was unveiled by Prof.D.R.Gunasekaran, our respected Vice – Chancellor of SBV University. Later the Nation’s Tricolor flag was hoisted at the flag post in front of hospital block by the Vice – chancellor with due respect and salutation. The students sang the National Anthem with respect and fervor. This was followed by

guard of honor, singing of patriotic songs, speeches against corruption by students. The Vice – Chancellor after his motivating speech distributed commendation certificates to the staff who contributed their might all along the year. Central University in collaboration with Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth University, Pondicherry. The following were discussed in detail during the two days of the conference. The International Conference was held between 25.07.11 and 26.07.11 at the convention cum cultural centre of Pondicherry University. • To exchange knowledge and first hand experience of the researchers, academicians, teachers, student counselors, policy makers, parents and students who deal with student’s mental health. • To develop professional network for collaborative research on different dimensions of students mental health. • To recommend suitable measures to the policy makers regarding curriculum, schools disciplinary measures and enrollment of children in schools, based on the insights gained. Among the speakers from various parts of the world, it was interesting to note that the following eminent personalities across the globe were guest speakers. Prof.Barbara.L.Bonner from Dept. of Pediatrics, University of Oklahoma Health Sciences, USA spoke on motivating students for better academic performance without applying corporal punishments. Prof. Vikram Patel, Senior Research Fellow in clinical science at the London school of hygiene and Tropical medicine UK spoke on global mental health and neurological disorders in developing countries. Prof.Michael Dunne from Queensland University of technology, Brisbane, Australia spoke on educational stress at school, home, young people’s depression, suicidal thinking and health risk behavior. Prof.D.R.Gunasekaran, Vice – Chancellor of Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth, Pondicherry was the chief guest for the valediction ceremony, in his speech, he highlighted about the role of psychologists and how it should be in coordination with psychiatrists so as to solve the problem/ disease at the earliest. He also assured the audience and the Pondicherry Central University authorities that Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth University is always ready for any academic tie up with Pondicherry University and also for any tie up in social service angle. About 300 delegates from the field of Education, Medical Science, NGOR, Research Organizations and Educational Administration across the globe attended the two days international conference. SAF Guest Lecture On “Chronic Kidney Disease- A Physician’s Perspective” A Guest lecture was conducted on 19.08.11 by Scientific and Academic Forum (SAF), MGMC & RI. The speaker was Dr. K. Abirami MD, MRCP, DM(Nephrology), Fellowship in Nephrology (Canada), Senior Nephrologist, SPMM Hospital, Salem. She spoke on the topic, “Chronic Kidney Disease- A Physician’s Perspective”. The following are the gist of her excellent hour long presentation which was greatly appreciated by one and all.

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a term of rather recent coinage, 2002 to be precise and has replaced the words Chronic Renal Failure. It is defined as Kidney damage for more than 3 months, as defined by structural or functional abnormalities of the kidney, that can lead to decreased GFR, manifested by either pathologic abnormalities or markers of kidney damage, including abnormalities in imaging tests or

GFR less than 60ml/min/1.73 m2 for more than 3 months. Classification is based on the eGFR and is as follows: Stage 1- eGFR : >90 With demonstrated kidney damage (e.g., persistent proteinuria, abnormal urine sediment, abnormal blood and urine chemistry, abnormal imaging studies) , Stage 2- eGFR : 60-89, Stage 3- eGFR: 30-59, Stage 4- eGFR: 15-29, Stage 5- eGFR <15 previously ESRD. eGFR is estimated GFR using the Cockcroft Gault or MDRD formula. It is important that the eGFR is measured and not just the creatinine values as the same values may correspond to very different GFRs depending upon age, body weight and sex. Estimated creatinine clearance in (mL/min) is (140 – age × body weight, kg)/72 × PCr (mg/dL) (Multiply by 0.85 for women) according to the Cockcroft Gault formula.The disease burden of CKD is huge and treatment is available to very few. In India 182710 people were estimated to go on to ESRD every year. 90% of them never visited a nephrologist and only 3-5% of these patients were able to get renal replacement therapy of any sort( hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis or renal transplant) so ESRD is effectively a death sentence for most patients making it all the more imperative that the patients not be allowed to progress to ESRD if possible with the help of suitable interventions. For every patient with ESRD it is estimated that there are 200 patients with stage 3 CKD and 5000 patients with stage 1 and 2 CKD, making a total of 7.85 million people with CKD.It is to be emphasized that the major cause of mortality in patients with CKD is not CKD itself but cardiovascular diseases which is greatly increased in prevelance in this population. The investigations in CKD are Urine tests- urine routine analysis, urine albumin, protein and creatinine in spot sample and 24 hr urine protein and albumin excretion, Blood tests for renal function and tests to rule out complications of CKD and an ultrasound of the KUB region. Treatment of early stages of CKD can be done by general practitioners and basically consists of management of hypertension to strict blood pressure target of 125/75mmHg and control of proteinuria which is both a marker of damage as well as causes damage by itself. ACE inhibitors and ARBs form the mainstay of therapy for the same and decrease proteinuria by 30-40%. However they cause a fall in GFR by 10-15% and upto 40% develop “escape” from effects of ACE inhibition making it imperative to monitor creatinine and proteinuria. Other antihypertensives that have been proven useful are Carvedilol, endothelin antagonists and direct renin inhibitors. DHPCalcium channel blockers were found to worsen or at best are neutral in terms of proteinuria reduction and are not recommended for control

of proteinuria. Statins, allopurinol, N acetyl cysteine and paricalcitol have all been proposed for retarding progression of CKD but none are recommended as of today. It is also very important that NSAIDS, radiocontrast and other nephrotoxic drug exposure be prevented. Once other complications of CKD develop they are to be managed and patient may preferably be referred to a nephrologist as doing the same decreases morbidity and mortality. It has been shown that CKD can be curbed in the community with very simple interventions such as proper control of blood sugar and blood pressure. Education of the community and awareness along with low cost treatment for the predisposing factors for CKD are the only ways that this major public health hazard can be brought under control.

CONDUCTION OF CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION (CME) PROGRAMS CME on “Current Controversies in Medical Practices” The Scientific and Academic Forum (SAF) of the Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute (MGMC&RI), Puducherry, along with the Puducherry Chapter of the International Medical Sciences Academy conducted a Continuing Medical Education (CME) program on “Current Controversies

in Medical Practices” on 30th July 2011. The CME was inaugurated by the ViceChancellor of the Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth University, Prof. D. R. Gunasekaran. He highlighted the relevance of the topics in the current medical practices and also congratulated the SAF for considering the novel format of a medical debate to illustrate the intricacies in a medical controversy. The meeting had two sessions - session I had “Surgical and Non Surgical Treatment of Ischemic Heart Disease”. This session was chaired by Prof. G.Muthurangan, Dean, Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth University and Head, Dept. of CTVS and by Dr. B. Amirtha Ganesh, Assoc. Profesor, Dept. of Cardiology. Prof. K.R. Balakrishnan, MS., M.Ch (CTVS), Senior Consultant, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Malar Fortis Hospitals spoke on the “Surgical Treatment Of Ischemic Heart Disease (IHD)”. He debated upon the role of surgery and of non-surgical treatment in Ischemic Heart Disease. He elaborated upon the enormity of the problem in the Indian population and stressed upon the importance of lifestyle modification in preventing and lowering the incidence of IHD in our population. There was a very keen participation of the audience in the form of an elaborate interactive section.

He explained in detail about the many different improvements and variation in techniques for surgical treatment of Ischemic Heart Disease which have been developed, including a new technique called Minimally Invasive Coronary Artery Bypass (MIDCAB), or “limited access coronary artery bypass” that is available for patients with one or two blocked coronary arteries. In contrast with conventional CABG, which is an open-heart surgery, this procedure is done through a smaller incision over the heart to access the coronary arteries. Dr. Sriram Rajagopal, Chief Cardiologist, Southern Railway Headquarters Hospital, Chennai spoke in detail about the importance of the “Non Surgical Treatment in the Ischemic Heart Disease”. The message was about the optimal management of medical treatment of IHD. Dr. Sri Ram emphasized the importance of optimal medical management in modifying coronary risk factors on patients with chronic stable angina which is often under estimated. The Courage trial proved the importance of the same in chronic stable angina. This includes optimal doses of anti hypertensive, the choice of which is according to the risk factors, anti – platelets and statins. Life style modifications including dietary modifications, cessation of smoking, regular physical exercises are also equally important. All these issues about the optimal medical treatment even after angioplasty & life style modifications were stressed upon very much by Dr. Sri Ram.

The session II had two speakers of which Dr.A.Parthasarathy, Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics, Tamilnadu Dr.MGR Medical University, Chennai spoke in detail about the “Concepts of Newer Vaccines”. He discussed in detail about the rapid advances in Molecular Biology and Vaccine Development Technologies which have revolutionized the concepts in pediatric and Adolescent Immunization with the development of many new vaccines. Global Alliance for vaccines and Immunization with its laudable objective of “All Vaccines for All Children of the World” have come forward to subsidize even the costliest vaccines now available in Global market. As such the National Technical advisory Group on Immunization of the GOI has recommended the inclusion of more vaccines in the National Immunization Program with GAVI subsidy. Apart from the six killer diseases namely TB, Polio, Diphtheria, Pertussis , Tetanus and Measles and other diseases like Hepatitis B, Hib disease, mumps and Rubella, HPV disease etc have now been targeted in a phased manner. He expressed that, though vaccines are useful tools in preventing morbidity and mortality due to infectious diseases, they cannot be a substitute for safe drinking water, better sanitation and improvement of nutrition in children. He also insisted that exclusive breast feeding can be the best immunization a child can get free of cost and without any side effects. CME on “Understanding Inhalational Anesthesia: Virtual to Visual” The Department of Anesthesiology & Critical care, MGMCRI in association with Indian Society of Anesthesiologist, Pondicherry state branch conducted a one day CME cum Workshop on “Understanding Inhalational Anesthesia: Virtual to Visual” on 25.09.11. Concept of Inhalational Anesthesia has evolved enormously in the last few decades due to the introduction of newer inhalational agents and the availability of various agent monitors. Understanding concepts of inhalational anaesthesia needs lot of effort as everything is imagination and one needs to have regular practice to get the concept. The need for proper understanding of pharmacokinetics and depth of anaesthesia is acutely felt. Computer Aided Learning is difficult to develop, but is very rewarding in its effectiveness. The program Gas Man introduced by J. E Philip exploits computer to help student understand uptake and distribution of inhalational anaesthetic agents. Newer agents are not only safe, but also have faster induction and recovery. Concept of low flow anaesthesia is becoming popular in recent times and is practised in most of the centres successfully. The Simulation Center is comprised of mock clinical settings made to replicate the same environment that clinicians practice in at the Hospital. The Center was designed to be a flexible environment to accommodate multiple courses in various clinical settings. It is a combination of clinical space and a behind-the-scenes observation area to create an ideal learning atmosphere. Simulation training allows students to learn and practice how to react and act in a real life emergency situation and not just in the classroom. Simulation in teams is a chance of making mistakes and debriefing in a safe environment and to Improve ability to work in a team. Thus learner enters into spirit of story and act as if the patient simulator is a real patient. Studies have shown that students perform better and have higher retention rates than colleagues under strict traditional methods of medical training. The effectiveness of innovative teaching program on basic life support among higher secondary schools in Puducherry is practised by M.Sc Nursing students as part of their research studies. Every Clinical Department sends their faculty members to train all students including interns to participate in the simulationbased course at the center during their clinical postings. The course focuses on enhancing the clinical and communicationskill competencies necessary to handle scenarios commonly encountered during their hospital situation.

The Department of Pharmacology was established in 2001 under the able guidance of Dr. K Saraswathy, Prof & Head, an alumnus from Madurai Medical College Over subsequent years, other faculty have joined the department and made significant contributions to the development of the department. The first batch of MBBS students joined as undergraduate trainees in the year 2002-03. It started out as a department imparting basic knowledge and skills in the safe and effective use of medicines to undergraduates in MBBS, BDS and B.Sc Nursing. Today, it is a fully fledged postgraduate teaching cum services department with ADR monitoring and Drug Information Services.

Two well equipped laboratories are available for UG practical classes in Clinical and Experimental Pharmacology. There is also a research laboratory catering primarily for PG teaching in experimental and clinical pharmacology. Post graduate research laboratory is well equipped with facilities for conducting animal experiments. The housing of chemicals in optimum conditions and the techniques of Good laboratory practices (GLP) are established and followed amongst postgraduate students. Simulated experimental pharmacology software (CAL- LAB) is also available.

Library cum Seminar room

The departmental library is endowed with 159 books in Pharmacology, Therapeutics and allied sciences and subscribes to 5 national and international journals. The library also functions as a seminar room for PG and faculty presentations. Besides this, there are two demonstration rooms and two laboratories (with ante rooms) for clinical and experimental pharmacology used also for demonstration of practical topics.

Museum:

A departmental museum exists with exhibits, photographs, crude drug preparations & specimens. The Department administrates and manages an Animal House. The departmental museum has an extensive permanent exhibition of illustrative charts and study materials, crude drug preparations with booklets and drug samples and serves as a

Mock internal exams with theory, practical and viva voce are conducted on a regular basis. PG postings in the clinical departments are utilized for conducting studies on prescription pattern, ECG reading, Adverse Drug Reaction(ADR) monitoring, case reports of irrational use of drugs, drug interactions, substance use disorders etc. PGs are encouraged to participate and present papers in conferences and attend CMEs and workshops in pharmacology and allied sciences. Pharmaceutical industry orientation programmes for PGs include visits to GCP, GLP and GMP facilities. PGs have an optional visit to centres using new technologies like Pharmacogenomics laboratories, Nanotechnology, Biotechnology research facilities etc.

The Department of Pharmacology offers Drug information services to faculty, especially clinicians, interns, UG and PG students and even the lay public. Any queries can be addressed to the Executive editor, Phi-Sci, Department of Pharmacology, MGMCRI via Phi-Sci Red boxes put up at strategic locations in the college and hospital. The queries are answered within 48 hours and those of emergency nature as soon as possible by personal contact, e-mail, by phone or department intercom. Lay public are informed by e-mail only. Pharmacovigilance activity is another service rendered by the department. It comprises of adverse drug reaction (ADR) reporting by any clinician, faculty, student, trainees etc. The query boxes are meant to handle any ADR reports from the clinical and other departments. There is a Pharmacovigilance Committee which was set up in 2009. The members of the Pharmacovigilance Committee evaluate and assess causality of the reports. The department has conducted 2 workshops on Essential medicines & Rational use of medicines and Prescription writing & Rational prescribing in April and November 2009 respectively. The latter was combined with a Prescription writing competition open to UGs, PGs, interns and Junior residents. Details of the programs are available in the reports of the workshop. Plans For The Future

The futuristic vision of the Department of Pharmacology - to establish a postgraduate museum for catering to recent advances in Pharmacology, activities in Drug Information Services (DIS) and Pharmacovigilance to be scaled up with the setting up of a DIS Centre in the hospital premises, prescription event monitoring (PEM) to be integrated into the hospital management system with the setting up of intranet services which would enhance patient safety through safer use of medicines, establishment of a Hospital Therapeutics Committee for safe and effective use of medicines in the hospital which is on the anvil, to establish a Drug development & Medical Research Centre (DDMRC) with BA/BE facilities depending on feasibility and management support, plan to successfully organize CMEs in Stem cell therapy, Pharmacogenomics and to organize many more workshops and seminars on Clinical and Basic Pharmacology, Clinical Research, frontier areas in Pharmacology such as Nanomedicine, Pharmacoeconomics, Pharmacoepidemiology etc., and finally to have Pharmaceutical industry exposure and training to the faculty and postgraduates in clinical research by postings, or tie-ups with industry. GLASGOW UNIVERSITY TE AM VISITS OUR UNIVERSITY A team of medical Professionals from Glasgow University, Glasgow, United Kingdom and Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of United Kingdom visited Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth University on 8th and 9th September 2011 for official tie up between Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth University, Puducherry, India and Glasgow University, United Kingdom. The team comprising of Prof.Philip Cotton, Prof. Mary Ann Lumsden, Dr.Sam Lingam, Dr.Robin North Cote and Dr.Sandosh Padmanabhan visited our University. The agenda for the visit was to finalize the following . •Curriculum exchange program between the two Universities. •Students and Staff exchange programs. •Research co – ordination between the two Universities. •Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth to be an examination centre for FRCP, FRCB exams conducted by Royal College, Glasgow. •Exchange of ideas as well as to provide platform for one another for research activities between the two universities. UG Medal Exam: A Pioneer Effort The Department of General Medicine conducted a ‘Gold medal exam’ for final year under graduate students to commemorate the decade long academic journey of MGMC&RI. The event had two stage examinations. First stage was MCQ exam, in which 50 final year students participated, out of that based on the performance in that exam 5 candidates were selected for the clinical exam. For clinical exam the examiners were Dr. S. Mini Lecture competition for UGs A mini lecture competition for UGs was organized to commemorate Teacher’s Day wherein UG students delivered a lecture on selected topics in Pharmacology to a class of UG students to inculcate in them the joys and challenges of teaching. Pondicherry State Intercollegiate Pharmacology Quiz The Pondicherry State Pharmacology Quiz for undergraduates and interns was held on 10.09.11. The 1 placed team from the intra-collegiate quiz represented MGMCRI in the Inter-collegiate Pondicherry State Pharmacology Quiz on the following day. The Eleventh Plan approach paper correctly notes that rural health care in most states in India is marked by absenteeism of doctors/ health providers, low levels of skills, shortage of medicines, inadequate supervision/monitoring and callous attitudes. There are neither rewards for service providers, nor punishments to defaulters. As a result, health outcomes in India are worse than neighboring countries like Sri Lanka and Southeast Asian countries like China and Vietnam. The failure of the health system is leading to a visible decline in outcomes. Immunization rates in India were already low by international comparisons, worse than even those for countries like Bangladesh and Cambodia. A recent report shows that immunization of children in India declined sharply from an already low 52% in 1998-99 to 44.6% in 2002-03. The two rounds of household surveys on the state of maternal and child health care, conducted by the Reproductive and Child Health Programme of the World Bank, show serious failures in public health services in India. Out of 274 districts, child immunization declined in 197 districts. Routine polio, DPT and measles vaccination declined in 191, 199 and 153 districts, respectively. The data on antenatal care and assisted deliveries is appalling. Though the proportion of deliveries assisted by health workers went up from 39.6% in 1998-99 to 47.5% in 2002-03, the percentage of women delivering in public health facilities declined from 24% to 18.5%. The increase took place in deliveries in the private sector, where they rose steeply from 9.4% to 21.5%. Ironically, women in â&#x20AC;&#x153;better placed statesâ&#x20AC;?, which presumably have better access to public health facilities, are using these less. In Andhra Pradesh, the percentage of women delivering in public institutions declined by 9.8%, in Kerala by 28.9%, in Karnataka by 10.2%, in Maharashtra by 9.1% and in Tamil Nadu by 15.3%. Further, the number of women who received post-natal care by public health workers through home visits within two weeks of delivery also declined from 14.1% to 12.7%. Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & Research Institute, since the year of inception is providing tireless, dedicated, honest and wholesome health care services to the mankind both inside the hospital wards and outside the hospital in the community/ rural areas in and around Puducherry. The health care providers in the community used to be mainly learned Professors of various specialist departments in coordination with the department of Community Medicine, junior faculty members, post-Graduate students and several paramedical workers on and off the scenes. The Community health care services are mainly provided through free health camps organized

by the department of Community Medicine of MGMC&RI in and around Puducherry. The frequency of the camps ranges from 2 to 5 camps per month depending upon the community need assessment, opportunity and scope for a particular month. MGMC&RI and the Department of Community Medicine is very proud to state that hundreds of such health camps were organized since inception and thousands of common and rural people, usually unreached, got benefitted not only by free health check-up and consultation but also with provision of free medications, Lab. Investigations and referral services according to the need. Adding much to the credit points is the introduction of the TELEMEDICINE VAN since March 2011. The specialized van is taken to each and every camp site of outreach services to provide immediate emergency super-specialty care through video conferencing and other means of Telemedicine links. Health Camps For the months of July to September 2011 the Department of Community Medicine has organized total 9 (nine) health camps. The details of each camp are as follows: On dated 05/07/2011 a free medical camp was organized by the Department of Community Medicine in coordination with various other specialty department, viz. Medicine, Surgery, OBGY, Paediatrics, ENT, Ophthalmology, in Villiannur, Pondicherry. Dr.Sudarshan. B.P. was the coordinator of the camp from the dept. of Community Medicine. Around 340 people were the beneficiaries and 56 of them were referred to MGMC&RI for further investigation and treatment A camp was held on 12/07/2011 at Vadakattu, Neyveli. The camp was organized by the department of Community Medicine in coordination with several specialty departments. Dr.Prabakaran. M. was the coordinator for overall activities of the camp. 549 local people were benefited and 82 patients among them were referred to MGMCRI for further evaluations and needful. On 19.07.2011 another multispecialty health camp was organized by the dept. of Community Medicine in coordination with the Departments of Medicine, Surgery, OBGY, Paediatrics, DVL, ENT, Ophthalmology and Orthopaedics. Dr.Prabakaran.M was the coordinator from the Dept. of Community Medicine. 183 patients were the beneficiaries and around 22 patients were referred to various departments of MGMCRI for further specialized treatment. Yet another multispecialty health camp was organized on 27.07.2011 at Solainagar, Muthialpet, Pondicherry. Dr.Raghunath, PG, from the Department of Community Medicine was appointed to look after the activities of the camp. 173 people were the beneficiaries and 26 patients out of them were referred to various specialty departments of MGMC&RI for further investigation and required treatment. On the 31.07.11, the Sahodaran group, an organisation for the transgender people, had organised a health camp for the transgender people at Puducherry , which was followed by a unique cultural programme by them. Dr. P.Asritha and Dr.S.Anitta, PG students of Dermatology Department, had attended to the patients with dermatology problems. Later the entire department turned up for the cultural program, which was inaugurated by Dr. S. Ambujam, HOD-DVL, who also spoke about their health issues and emphasised on the utilisation of special treatment exclusively offered to them by the Institute. It was a wonderful experience as we were able to see the immense talents of the transgender people. On 05.08.11 a camp was organized by the Department of Community Medicine in coordination with the Departments of Medicine, Surgery, OBGY, Paediatrics, ENT, Ophthalmology, DVL, Orthopaedics, etc. at Neyveli, Tamilnadu. Dr.Kanagarajan.P was appointed to look after the camp’s onsite activities and 270 people got benefited in terms of consultation and treatment of minor ailment. 30 patients among them were referred to various specialty and superspecialty Department of MGMC&RI for further evaluation and treatment. On 24.08.2011 at Mullainagar, Pondicherry, yet another multispecialty health camp was organized by the Department of Community Medicine where around 141 local community people got benefited in terms of free consultation, treatment and health education. And 18 patients among them were referred to various departments of MGMC&RI for further investigation and treatment. Dr.Rajkumar, PG, Community Medicine was appointed to look after the camp’s overall activities. On 28.08.11, the Dept. of DVL had conducted a special camp for the children of APRES school, a special school catering to the tsunami afflicted orphans and children from very poor families. Dr. P. Asritha, Dr. Neenu.S and Dr. Nitin, PG students of Dermatology Department, had attended to over 85 children and screened them diligently irrespective of the presence or absence of symptoms. Certain diseases including leprosy, which neither the caretakers nor the children were aware of, were picked up and appropriate

distribution of free medications was carried out. They also went around the school premises and gave valuable tips to the faculty on maintenance of cleanliness as a part of preventive dermatology. The first free medical camp for the month of September was conducted on 09.09.2011 at Koravallimedu, Bahour Commune, Pondicherry. Dr.Kanagarajan.P, was appointed from the Department of Community Medicine to look after the overall activities of the camp. The camp was organized in coordination with various specialty departments and around 383 local community people were the beneficiaries. 42 patients among them were referred to various departments of MGMC&RI for further treatment. In Kurinji Nagar, Pondicherry, on 13.09.2011 another free health camp was organized by the Department of Community Medicine in coordination with various specialty departments like G. Medicine, G. Surgery, OBGY, Paediatrics, ENT, Ophthalmology, DVL, Orthopaedics etc. about 201 local people got benefited in the form of free consultation, minor investigations, treatment and health education. And 19 patients out of the 201 were referred to various specialty and super-specialty department for further evaluation and management. Dr.Raghunath, PG, Community Medicine was the responsible person to look after the overall activities of the camp onsite. On 21.09.2011 another multispecialty free health camp was organized by the Department of Community Medicine in coordination with various departments of MGMC&RI at R.K.Nagar, Ariyankuppam, Pondicherry. Dr.Prasad, PG, Community Medicine, was appointed to look after the activities of the camp. Around 112 local people got benefited and 13 of them were referred to various department of MGMCRI for further evaluation and treatment in hospital. Activities In The Health Centres The Department of Community Medicine of MGMC&RI has got two actively functioning health and training centers attached with since the beginning, namely Rural Health and Training Centre (RHTC), Seliamedu and Urban Health and Training Centre (UHTC), Ariyankuppam. These centres not only provide curative cares to the patients but promotive and preventive cares are also provided by the permanently posted medical officers and the post graduate students of the Department of Community Medicine. The centers function from 8.30am to 4.00pm every week days, except on Saturdays up to 2.00pm. The activities in the centers are well monitored by the HOD, Community Medicine, as well as by the in-charge Assistant Professors for each center from MGMCRI u SSSMCRI u IGIDS u KGNC

the Department of Community Medicine. All the activities taking place in both the centers are well documented in various well-maintained registers and are reproduced to the institution as and when required. The Program on “Advantages of Breast feeding” was conducted in the rural health center, Seliamedu. Most of the lactating mothers and pregnant women from Seliamedu & adjoining villages participated in it. Dr. Sharada M. P. Head of the Department inaugurated the programme on the morning of 09.09.2011 and gave the welcome address to the mothers. Dr. E. Raghunatha 2nd yr post graduate from the Department of Community Medicine gave a talk about the “Advantages of Breast feeding to the infants & mothers”. Dr. Lokeshwari , Intern, discussed about some “Common problems faced by the lactating mothers during breast feeding”. Miss Deepa (ANM) taught the participants about “Feeding techniques and positioning the baby while feeding”. At the end of the program Questionnaires were distributed about breast feeding & the participants were asked to fill them, & those who had done well were selected and prizes were distributed. The Program on Diabetes screening was also held at Seliamedu rural health center on the 08.09.11 & 09.09.11. Dr. Sharada M. P. inaugurated the program & gave a brief introduction. Dr. P. Vaithiyanathan, 2nd yr post graduate from the Department of Community Medicine gave a talk on the risk factors and complications of diabetes and organized the camp. About 68 patients of >40 yrs of age participated & 5 new cases were detected & counseled . The centers not only provide free Out Patient (O.P.) services with preliminary investigations and treatment to the patients but also provide health

educations and health promotional guidance, as per schedule, under the supervision of the medical officer and PG students, as directed by the Department of Community Medicine on regular basis. The O.P. census for the month of July, 2011, in RHTC was 1250 (with 613 new + 637 old) cases UHTC it was 1360 (with 481 new + 879 old) cases. For the month of August, 2011, the O.P. census in RHTC was1267 (with 651 new + 616 old) cases and in UHTC it was 1364 (with 493 new + 871 old) cases. The O.P. census for the month of September, 2011, in RHTC was 1198( With 192 new + 606 old) UHTC it was1519 ( 581 new + 938 old ) Besides the O.P. services, on every Thursdays a session of health education were done in the UHTC, Ariyankuppam, for all those who come in the centre (patients and patients’ care takers). Similarly on every Wednesday health educational sessions are organized in the RHTC, Seliamedu, as a part of Health Promotion, Health Education and Behavioral change program to be disseminated in the community. The local community people use to get benefited in various aspects like general health and hygiene, oral hygiene, water borne diseases, vector borne diseases, other communicable diseases and their preventions, Non-communicable diseases like Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension and Cancer, information and importance of Family Planning, Diet and Nutrition, Waste disposal etc. All the faculty, doctors and staff of the Department of Community Medicine take the pride of being associated with MGMC&RI and providing these noble services to the humanity in the field practicing areas of MGMC&RI specially the rural, unreached and mostly illiterate community.

The Library has designed a separated web exclusively for the Central Library. The Department of Public Health Dentistry organized a comprehensive school oral health education program, at Krishnaswamy Matriculation School and Krishnaswamy school of Excellence, Cuddalore between 18.08.11 & 19.08.11. Campaigns and commemorations World breast feeding week The Department of Child Health Nursing celebrated “World Breast Feeding Week” between 01.08.2011-05.08.2011. Various programs like puppet show, mime, essay and poster competitions were organized based on the theme “Talk to MeBreastfeeding A 3D Experience”. A short film entitled “Thottil Thavippu” was directed, enacted and screened by the 7th semester students of KGNC. It was a bold venture which is highly commendable! The Department of Pediatrics along with Scientific and Academic Forum, MGMCRI organized a program on the final day wherein the winners of the poster and essay competitions were awarded prizes. These programs imparted knowledge to the antenatal and postnatal mothers and it was well - received by the public.

Nutrition week In commemoration of “Nutrition Week” various events like cookery competition, essay competition, poster competition, quiz and extempore were organized from 01.09.2011 to 07.09.2011 on the theme, “Eat with Colours”. Students keenly participated in these competitions. World Alzheimer’s Day The Department of Mental Health Nursing, in commemoration of “World Alzheimer’s Day”, organized a variety of programmes like role play, poster and quiz competitions. The 2nd year post basic B.Sc Nursing students enacted the various faces of dementia in a realistic manner. A documentary movie on dementia was also screened. The 2nd year M.sc Nursing students presented on the theme which was very informative.
