MESSAGE FROM DEAN’S DESK

Dear Readers, The Period Apr-Jun was full of activities starting from Annual Cultural events Crescendo 2016 the Zenith of Joy on 31st March, 1st and 2nd April. Our respected Vice Chancellor KR Sethuraman & Dr Ravishankar, Dean MGMCRI were the VIPS who attended these functions. In the Publication side there were 61 articles published and out of which 41 are from the Community Medicine department.

There was lot of academic activities including a presentation on crime scene investigation by Dr Vijayakumar Nair, HOD Forensic Medicine Dept. There were student enrichment programmes including a Quiz ‘Quest 2016’ by the Physiology Dept. conducted by Dr.Dinesh. The highlight of this period was admission of first batch of Postgraduate students in nine clinical specialties and two para clinical specialties. A Orientation Program was also conducted by Dr. Ananthakrishnan Dean, Research and Dr Ravishankar Dean PG along with Dr Mahalakshmi, Vice-principal MGMCRI. Our respected Madam Chairperson Mrs Gowri Rajagopalan lighted the Kuthuvilakku and greeted the new PG students. There were other routine internal audits by IQAC of NAAC.

EDITORIAL

Medical Education is a fascinating concept in constant evolution. The trend in Medical Education is witnessing rapid and well refined changes day by day. Electronic Learning is assuming an important space in the curriculum of modern medical schools and it is nice to learn that Medical schools in the Indian Subcontinent are beginning to realize the enormous potential in E- Learning platform. In the future near and far, the entire globe would face the Indian subcontinent for excellent models to comprehend.

PHYSIOLOGY QUIZ PROGRAM The Department of Physiology conducted a quiz programme, QUEST

2016, for the first MBBS

students of the batch 2015- 2016 on 30.4. 2016. A Preliminary round was first held on the 7th of April 2016 and the top twelve students were selected for the finals. The twelve students were divided into 4 teams of 3 members each by lots. Our respected Dean Sir kindly consented to give away the prizes and certificates to the participants.

SCIENTIFIC EVENTS CME The department of Orthopedics organized the CME on Common orthopedic ailments after age 60 on 9th Feb 2016. Invited guest lecture was delivered during the occasion by Prof.S.Karunakaran and Prof. S.Shanmugasundaram delivered lectures related to the topic.

WORLD HEALTH DAY – 07/04/2016

Theme: Halt the rise: Beat Diabetes World Health Day was observed in Thiruporur UHTC on 07th April by the Department of Community Medicine. A health talk and role-play was organized for the welfare of the patients attending the centre. The health talk and role play was done by the CRRIs’ posted in the centre, under the guidance of the Medical Officer, and patients were counseled regarding the importance of periodic blood sugar estimation, adherence to therapy, and role of self-care in preventing the progression of the disease. WORLD IMMUNIZATION WEEK OBSEVATION – 24/04/2016 – 30/04/2016

Theme: Close the immunization gap

Immunization Week was observed in the Thiruporur UHTC by the Department of Community Medicine in the last week of the April month. A health talk was given to all the women coming to the centre with children in the under-five year age group, and they were explained about the importance of immunizing their child against vaccine-preventable diseases.

WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY – 31/05/2016

Theme: Get ready for plain packaging No Tobacco Day was observed in both Sembakkam RHTC and Thiruporur UHTC with the help of CRRIs’ posted in the Department of Community Medicine. A role play was organized in both the centers to depict the side effects of consuming tobacco in any form and an interactive session was conducted for clearing the doubts of the beneficiaries. WORLD BLOOD DONATION DAY – 14/06/2016 Theme: Blood connects us all A rally was organized by the Department of Community Medicine in the field practice area of Sembakkam RHTC to create awareness about the importance of voluntary blood donation and its role in saving human lives.
