Research Activities C entr al I nter-Disciplinary R esearch Facility (CIDRF)

Promising to grow into a ‘Center of Excellence”, an assertive research agenda was set forward by CIDRF and Prof. N. Ananthakrishnan, Dean (Research), MGMCRI. During the first quarter of the year 2013, three projects from CIDRF were submitted to Govt. of India funding agencies for financial support. One project proposal is complete for submission in May 2013. Twelve projects are under incubation for pilot study and development into full projects in the next quarter.

Academic Initiatives SAF Guest lecture on “I nterventional

technique in the management of ischemic stroke ”

A guest lecture was conducted on 25.01.2013 by Scientific and Academic forum (SAF), Medical Education Unit, MGMC&RI. The speaker was Dr Santosh Joseph, MD, Prof and Head, Dept of Radiology and Imaging Sciences, Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute and he spoke on the topic “Interventional technique in the management of ischemic stroke”.

Prof. Joseph started his talk with a brief introduction about stroke and its etiology. He then elaborately discussed on the role of endovascular management in acute stroke. He divided the management in three part, 1. Thrombolysis, 2.

Mechanical clot retrieval devices and 3.Stroke prevention.

He discussed the role of intraarterial thrombolysis with rTPA which is more effective particularly in larger vessel occlusion with lesser dose of rTPA and lesser risk of systemic haemorrhage.

Prof. Joseph described about the different clot retrieval devices like Merci device, Wing span stent, Penumbra device, Solitaire stent and discussed the techniques and their merits and demerits. In last section of his talk, Prof. Joseph discussed on several extracranial and intracranial vascular devices for stroke prevention. Prof. Joseph’s talk was enriched with several interesting cases and his personal experience on this field was very much appealing to the audience. Dr Joseph stressed on the multidisciplinary team approach which involves several persons at different level for proper management of the patients with acute stroke. The talk was followed by a live audience interaction session.

The Scientific and Academic Forum (SAF) of MGMC & RI, Medical Education Unit, conducted the Annual Internal Oration on 22.02.2013 at the college premises. For the first time in the history of MGMC & RI the Internal Oration was named after our beloved chairman Sri M.K. Rajagopalan’s mother Smt. Rukmani Ammal and henceforth shall be called as “Smt. Rukmani Ammal Annual Internal Oration.” It was delivered by Prof Dr.S.Selvasundari M.S., D.O., Head of Department of Ophthalmology, MGMC & RI on the topic “Ophthalmology-Beyond what we see”.

Dr.V.Varun Kumar, Post graduate, Dept of Ophthalmology was the Master of Ceremony. Prof Dr.G.Muthurangan, Vice chancellor in charge and Prof Dr.M.Varadarajan, President of SAF graced the occasion.

Prof Dr.V.Nirmal Coumare, Medical Supdt. & Secretary of SAF read out the citation. Prof Dr.G.Muthurangan felicitated the gathering. Prof Dr.M.Varadarajan handed over the citation to the orator. Prof Dr.Sudha Rao, Head, Department of Anatomy presented a bouquet to Prof Dr.S.Selvasundari and Prof Dr.K.R.Thyagarajan, Head of Department of Orthopedic presented a bouquet to

shown with videos. The pathophysiological mechanism and the two major types of glaucoma were highlighted and the significance of IOP screening for early identification and treatment of glaucoma to prevent permanent optic nerve damage was explained. Diabetes mellitus and its manifestations in the eye were explained. Finally, hypertension and stages of hypertensive retinopathy were shown. Dr.S.Selvasundari urged the gathering to encourage and educate the public about eye donation and thereby helping in preventing corneal blindness. After the oration, Prof.N.Ananthakrishana, Dean of PG studies presented a memento to the speaker.

Orthopedics and Deputy Director Hospital services delivered a guest talk on “ Recent Advances in treating Osteoarthritis joints”, while Dr. Prasant Nayak, Assoc.Prof., Department of Urology, delivered a guest talk titled, ‘Recent advances in the field of Urology’ at Neyveli for the Neyveli Chapter of the IMA on 24.02.2013 to an elite audience of about 60 doctors.

Puducherry made their esteemed presence and spoke to the august gathering of 350 scientific members. As physicians and surgeons, it becomes important for us to keep abreast of the latest medical developments and make every effort to incorporate the best of the facilities available in our treatment armamentarium. Thus this CME was an opportunity to collate what’s latest in specialty, intensive, emergency care services and to keep in touch with the most recent advances in the field of Medicine.

“Workshop on M edical Student Well Being”

“Workshop on Medical Student Well Being” was conducted by Dr. P. Bharathi, Professor of Physiology, Music Medicine Unit. MGMCRI , on 09.03.2013 which was presided by Prof.G. Muthurangan, Vice Chancellor incharge, SBV University. Dr. R. Sobana Jaiganesh was the Programme coordinator. It was attended by Medical, Dental, Nursing students and members of the faculty. The program started with a Scientific Session by Dr. Eswaran, Associate Professor, Dept. of Psychiatry, who spoke on the topic titled, “An Overview of stress Management and Health Promotion”. The Workshop Session had two speakers. Dr. Barathi, Professor and Head, Music Medicine Unit, MGMC&RI spoke on the topic, “Music administration for Medical Student in Stress”, where Music in Rag Bilahari was played in folk style.

The students felt that the music was relaxing and believed it would improve their learning ability. Next there was a Lecture Demonstration on “Stress and its Management by Yoga” by Dr. Madanmohan, Professor& Head, Department

The Scientific and Academic Forum (SAF) of MGMC & RI, Medical Education Unit, conducted the Annual External Oration on 22.03.2013 at the college premises. Once again for the first time in the history of MGMC & RI, the External Oration was named after our beloved chairman Sri M.K. Rajagopalan’s father Thiru M.V.Krishnamoorthy Iyer and henceforth shall be called as “Thiru M.V.Krishnamoorthy Iyer Annual External Oration.”

It was delivered by Padma Shri Prof Mohan Kameswaran, Managing Director and senior consultant, Madras ENT Research Foundation, Chennai, on the topic “Coping up with Tomorrows Technology Today” which was a treat to listen. The following are the essence of his talk. “Cochlear implant is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to person who is profoundly deaf or severely hard of hearing . Cochlear implant are often called bionic ears. Cochlear implant may help provide hearing in patients that are not deaf because of damage to sensory hair cells in their cochleas. In those patents, the Implant

often can enable sufficient hearing for better understanding of speech. The quality of sound is different from natural hearing,with less sound information being received and processed by brain. However many patients are able to hear and understand speech and environmental sounds. Newer devices and processing strategies allow recipient to hear better in noise, enjoy music,and even use their implant processers while swimming. An auditory brainstem implant (ABI) is a surgically implanted electronic device that provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf, due to sensorineural hearing impairment ( due to illness or injury

damaging the cochleas or auditory nerves and so precluding the use of a cochlear implant. The auditory brain stem implant use similar technology as cochlear implant, but instead of electrical stimulation being used to stimulate the cochlea, it is instead used to stimulate the brain stem of the recipient.

Only about a thousand recipient have been implanted with an auditory brain stem implant, due to the nature of surgery required to implant the device ( as it requires brain surgery to implant the device.) and the reduced effectiveness of the implant. ( Most auditory brain stem implant recipient only have a awareness of sound - recipient ‘s wont be able to hear musical melodies, only the beat.) Gene therapy is the use of DNA as a pharmaceutical ajent to treat disease. It derives its name from the idea that DNA can be used to supplement or alter genes with in an individual cells as a therapy to treat disease. The more common form of gene therapy involves using DNA that encodes a functional, therapeutic gene to replace a mutated gene. Other form involve directly correcting a mutation, or usual DNA that encodes a therapeutic protein drug (other than a natural human gene ) to provide treatment.

In gene therapy DNA that encodes a therapeutic protein is packaged within a “vector”,Which is used to get the DNA inside cell within the body. Once inside, the DNA becomes expressed in the production of therapeutic protein, which in turn treat the patient disease. It refers to changes in natural pathways and synapses which are due to changes in behavior, enrironment and neural processes, as well as changes resulting from bodily injury. Neuroplasticity occurs on a variety of levels ranging from cellular changes due to learning, to large scale changes involved in cortical remapping in response to injury. The role of neuroplasticity is widely recognized in healthy development, learning, memory and recovery from brain demage”. Chairman of SBVU, Sri M.K. MGMCRI, chaired sessions and participated in a panel discussion at the International conference on Music Therapy - “Hidden Potential”, held at Accord Hotel, Puducherry between 23.02.2013 and 24.02.2013. A team of doctors from various part of the world who participated as speaker at the conference visited the Music Medicine Unit and toured around MGMCRI and praised the institution

for its mission and vision in promoting well being of the downtrodden people of society.

I ntern ’s Orientation progr am-2013

Under the auspices of Medical Education Unit of MGMCRI, the Interns Orientation Program – 2013 was held on 22.01.2013, Tuesday at third floor Lecture Hall, Central Library Complex. The program was meant for 120 interns (passed out in Dec 2012 and June 2012). The program was inaugurated by Prof.G.Muthurangan, Dean.

The aim of the program was to familiarize new interns with their tasks in wards and their role in the community. The

During the period, January – March 2013, the Central Library added 9,000 books thus bringing the total collection of books 20,135. The Library is now flooded with books. The addition of books includes latest books from all branches of medical subjects attracting students and faculty members.

The number of daily users has increased many folds with the reading section always full. With the addition of the New books, the Second floor of the library has been re – organized. Proquest On line service is yet another area where the utilization of the Library has shown excellent growth. The Proquest on line access of the journals was introduced on 29.01.2013 for PGs and faculty. The users’ statistics received from Proquest for the period from 29.01.2013 to 31.03.2013 reveals that MGMCRI usage continues to be one among top medical instructions usage in India and is used by our scholars extensively. The following is the high lights of consolidated usage statistics of MGMCRI for the period of Jan – March 2013.More than 3100 journal articles downloaded, 2100+ unique / advanced search and 4,200 + total search done.

the Month of March, two patients namely Miss.Vidya and Miss.Akshaya, got admitted in the department of General Medicine, with a history of loose stools, oral ulcer, fever and cough with expectoration was provisionally diagnosed as Common Variable Immune Syndrome and treated accordingly to a road of excellent recovery.

Mini PERC Ureteroscopic PCNL or Mini PERC is now being offered at the department of Urology to treat Renal Calculi with minimal morbidity. Urologist from the department of Urology performed MINI PERC on a 6 year old girl child for a right renal calculus, with this modality.

An unusual case of Polycystic Liver disease treated by Laparoscopic fenestration technique -Dr. Rajan K.V. Dr.Kannan.R, Prof. Ramachandran.GS,

Polycystic liver disease (PLD) is rare and occurs with an autosomal dominant pattern, either in isolation or associated with polycystic kidney disease. Majority of these are asymptomatic and only 10-15% become symptomatic. Surgical intervention is required only when they become painful, produce compressive symptoms or other complications like infection and rupture. In recent years, laparoscopic approach for the management of these symptomatic cysts has become the standard of care.

We report a case of PLD successfully managed by the laparoscopic technique, resulting in a fast recovery and minimal postoperative morbidity. A 65 year old female patient presented to our Surgical OPD with complaints of upper abdominal pain and early satiety due to discomfort during meals for three months. Clinical examination revealed a large, soft and non-tender mass in the epigastrium. An ultrasound examination showed multiple cysts in both the liver and kidneys. A CT scan of the abdomen was carried out for a better assessment and this revealed multiple hepatic cysts, the largest one measuring 12x10 cm arising from the left lobe (Figure 1).

CT scan showing large cyst from left lobe of liver Surgical intervention was done as the largest hepatic cyst was causing pain and compressing the stomach leading to discomfort and early satiety. A 3 port technique laparoscopy was employed for carrying out the fenestration of this cyst. This procedure involved laparoscopic aspiration of the cyst fluid (nearly1litre removed) and deroofing (excision) of the cyst wall with diathermy scissors (Figure 2). This allowed the secretions from the cyst to be drained directly into the peritoneal

cavity. A drain was placed in the residual cyst -cavity.

Figure 2. Laparoscopic view of the hepatic cyst The patient made a rapid and uneventful recovery. The histopathological report of the excised cyst wall confirmed features of simple hepatic cyst.

The patient was doing well at the recent OPD visit and a regular surveillance has been arranged to monitor the remaining liver cysts.

Laparoscopic fenestration for simple liver cysts is a safe procedure with excellent patient benefits in terms of rapid recovery, minimal postoperative pain and cosmesis. For comparison purpose, an open procedure for this condition would have produced a prolonged hospital stay, long abdominal scar with its attendant wound complications and a significant risk of incisional hernia (Figure 3).

Quadriplegia recovers: - Prof.V.Veerappan, Dr.Abhishek, Dr.Varun.G.B.S Mr.Selvaraj 28/M, who sustained Cervical Trauma, presented with Quadriplegia with bowel and bladder involvement. After a marathon surgery, both combined anterior and posterior decompression with stabilization was done in a single sitting, has recovered his upper limb power completely, with bowel and bladder control regained. With rigorous physiotherapy, lower limb sensations have also recovered.

Hopefully his motor power of lower limbs will improve.

The Harmony Indian Music Therapy R ag C handr ak auns R elieves Cardiac Pain D ue To Psychological Stress

There is an enormous amount of literature on psychological stress and cardiovascular disease1. The ramifications of stress in terms of the effects of acute versus long-term stressors on cardiac functioning are innumerable. Chronic stressors include job stress, marital unhappiness, and burden of care- giving, while acute stressors include those provoked by the sudden loss or death of close relatives, friends, etc. Studies on these cases have generated extensive data concerning stressors’ contributions to diverse patho-physiological changes including sudden death, myocardial infarction, myocardial ischemia, and wall motion abnormalities, as well as to alterations in cardiac regulation as indexed by changes in sympathetic nervous system activity and hemostasis.

Although stressors trigger events, it is less clear that stress “causes” the events. There is nonetheless overwhelming evidence both for the deleterious effects of stress on the heart and for the fact that vulnerability and resilience factors play a role in amplifying or dampening those effects. Numerous approaches are available for stress management that can decrease patients’ suffering and enhance their quality of life.

Transient left ventricular dysfunction is precipitated by acute stress:

Wittstein et al.2 examined 19 patients with left ventricular dysfunction that appeared in the setting of intense emotional stress (death in the family, court appearance, and so on). Upon arriving at the hospital, these patients had severe left ventricular dysfunction that rapidly improved from an ejection fraction of 20% on admission to 45% 4 days later. The patients presented with transient left ventricular apical ballooning and massively elevated plasma catecholamines. Sharkey et al.3 reported similar findings in terms of acute and reversible cardio myopathy provoked by catastrophic stress in patients with no prior history of cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular changes attributed to chronic stressors:

The INTERHEART study 4 investigated the relation of chronic stressors to incidence of myocardial infarction (MI) in a sample of ~25,000 people from 52 countries. Stress was defined as “feeling irritable, filled with anxiety, or as having sleeping difficulties as a result of conditions at work or at home. After adjusting for age, gender, geographic region, and smoking, those who reported “permanent stress” at work or at home had >2.1 times the risk for developing an MI.

How does job stress increase risk? Subjects who are in low

control jobs have blunted baroreflex sensitivity; that is, when their BP increases, they fail to make the appropriate adjustments of heart rate5. Other studies have demonstrated that workers with low job control respond to stressors in the laboratory environment with increased fibrinogen6. Such studies seem to suggest that the job-stressed patient is primed to hyper-respond to stressors even outside of the work environment.

Orth-Gomer et al.7 studied the impact of work stress and marital stress on the subsequent incidence of coronary artery disease and found that marital stress was associated with a 2.9-fold increased risk of recurrent events. Similar data are available for men in the MRFIT (Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial).

That trial found that chronic work stress and marital dissolution increased the risk of cardiovascular mortality in men who were followed for 9 years8.

According to a 2009 Cochrane review of 23 clinical trials, it was found that some music may reduce heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure in patients with coronary heart disease.

Benefits included a decrease in blood pressure, heart rate, and levels of anxiety in heart patients. In 11 studies patients were having cardiac surgery and procedures, in nine they were MI patients, and in three cardiac rehabilitation patients. In most studies, patients listened to one 30-minute music session. Only two used a trained music therapist instead of prerecorded music.

The use of meditation for heart disease follows the medical data that stress boosts blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels, hence a relaxing therapy such as meditation should be an important heart disease treatment. Meditation can lower dangerously high cholesterol levels in the blood along with blood pressure, it also can relieve stress levels, clearing the mind and producing a sense of calmness and control9.

The Music Medicine Unit in MGMC&RI uses ethnic ragas like Rag Chandrakauns, which is capable of inducing a peaceful meditative state in order to overcome the impact of stress on the physical body.

Mrs. C, aged 61 was referred to the Music Medicine Unit, MGMCRI with the complaints of anginal pain radiating to the left forearm, whenever she was exposed to overwhelming family disputes which was beyond her control. She was already under treatment with coronary vasodilators. She was administered Rag Chandrakauns for a duration of 30 mts per session, and was asked to continue listening to it at home for a period of one month. She was reviewed weekly twice and her subjective sensation of pain was assessed using a Numeric Pain Intensity scale (NRS), shown in Fig.1.

After 2 months of continuous listening, her pain score came down from 8 to a steady score of 4, even when exposed to stressful situations.

How does Rag Chandrakauns relieve cardiac pain due to psychogenic origin?

About thousand years back, music in India was confined to the temples for sacred ceremonies and rituals. They were not entertainment forms of music, but very potent sound formulas.

These sound formulas were used in ancient times to bring tranquility and peace to agitated minds and tired bodies, as well as to change and transform the state of consciousness of the listeners.

On the one hand, it served the therapeutic purpose of healing disease and sickness. On the other hand, its aim was to focus the attention of the people gathered in the temple towards onepointedness. This type of music is known as ‘margi’ music or the music which is used not for entertainment purposes, but to heal and to evolve ourselves (marga means a path).

When sounds are arranged according to the principles of the ancient music of India, which are based on natural scales and intonations, they produce pure intervals and tones not found in western music. When these natural tones are expressed in the proper formula by a well trained musician, a healing vibration is set up that goes beyond the sound vibrations in the air, and resonates within us at the cellular and molecular level. This gives the listener the experience of sound healing. Apart from these gross external sounds there also exist subtle inner sounds, from the heart beat, to the sound of air in the lungs, to the sounds in the mind, and beyond. Many Indian ragas set in the rhythm of the normal pulse/heart rate, have the capacity to set right the disordered internal sounds, when absorbed through the mind11.

Ratnakara, which is considered by many to be a very important work on Indian music. This is the last text in the Indian musicology that is referred to by both Carnatic and Hindustani Classical Music traditions, and is therefore thought to mark the point after which these two streams diverged.

Sarangadeva used the term ‘sthaaya’ to denote melodic patterns with iconic signs which exhibit specific dynamic characteristics. For example, melodic patterns simulating a rolling movement like that of a pearl were known as ‘dhaala’, and those which exhibited movement like the waves of a huge river were called ‘tarangita’12. These iconic signs can be used to produce a desired therapeutic effect, since they are endowed with specific psychodynamic characteristics.

Rag Chandrakauns, a pentatonic raga ( composed of 5 notes), was rendered with the notes repeating themselves in a circular fashion, thereby simulating the slow rotation of a wheel, in order to relieve the cardiac pain associated with psychological stress. The rhythm was similar to the heart rate, and the notes were made to flow in such a manner that they resonated in consonance with the ‘lub’ and dup’ of the normal beating heart. This circular flow of notes has the added advantage that it vibrates just like the swirling subtle energy field around the heart, as shown in figure 2a.

The human body is like a musical instrument, expressing numerous frequencies and rhythms in a constantly changing spectrum of life. It responds and resonates in consonance with music, sounds, speech and thought from the environment, and undergoes changes of heart beat, breathing, blood chemistry and circulation of energy in various organs of the body.

Our physical, mental, and emotional systems are relentlessly assaulted by the cacophony of daily life. The physical body responds by retaining tension, which limits our mobility and makes us tired. The mental and emotional systems are thrown out of balance, adding stress and making us prone to anger and depression and weakening the immune system.

Musical sounds, when combined in a specific manner, have a dynamic and powerful effect in balancing the energies of the body. Therefore, the arrangement of tones for different times of day, night and seasons, and how they relate with the changing states of body chemistry, was at the very center of study for ancient Indian masters of ‘sound’ and ‘music’.

Recent scientific experiments have validated the sound healing techniques used during ancient times. For example, the experiments conducted by Dr. Beverly Rubik using the electro-meridian analysis system (EMAS) have revealed improvements in the heart meridian points, after employing sound healing techniques13.

Quantum physics has clearly revealed a powerful truth that everything in the universe is pure energy, vibrating and pulsing at various frequencies. What we may perceive as being “solid” is actually energy moving, yet very slowly on the quantum level.

Energy Healing can be thought of as creating a state of relative balance and harmony, called homeostasis, where energy is flow-

ing through our bodies without resistance. In order to experience this flow of energy healing, it is essential that we nurture, purify and treat our “subtle energy field” with care and love. When we shut off our internal mind-talk and concentrate our attention through meditative music or music which induces contemplation, we tune ourselves into this subtle, spiritual, quantum-level energy matrix. When this energy is allowed to transfer to our DNA (without interruption from negative attitudes), it affects the molecular and cellular levels that drive all our physical metabolic processes. This is why we have the ability to heal ourselves through prayer, meditation or conscious intention, which leads to resolution of the unresolved earlier traumatic experience, by replacing a positive outlook in the negative mind 14.

Out Reach Services Department of Ophthalmology

During the first quarter of the year, 2013, the Department of Ophthalmology conducted eye camps under the District Blindness Control Society at various places in and around Cuddalore district. A total of 1531 were screened, out of which 47 Patients with cataract were brought to MGMCRI and operated free of cost.

World Health Organization (WHO) is commemorating 2012-13 year as “Symbol Of Old Age Health Care” all over the world with the theme i.e. “Ageing and Health: Good Health Adds years to Life”. In view of this, on 24.01.13, Prof. Sharada MP, Prof & Head, all the members of the faculty, post graduates, social worker and attenders, Department of Community Medicine, MGMCRI, Puducherry visited and celebrated an evening of fun & games

to the elderly residents, many of them living alone having lost their families during the Tsunami of 2004 December.

Project Director, Help Age India, Cuddalore, welcomed the gathering and thanked the Department of Community Medicine and MGMCRI for the event. The inmates actively participated in the events like Treasure Hunt, Musical Chairs & Passing the Parcel. Few of them sang songs and prayers & danced too which added flavor to event. Snacks & coffee were also served. Prizes were distributed to the winners. Five consolation prizes were also given for those who participated enthusiastically. Some of the inmates shared their views about the evening and thanked the department and MGMCRI for the new initiative.

World Leprosy Day was commemorated on 30.01.13 at the MRD premises, MGMCRI by the Dept of DVL. For the month March, free medical camps was organized at Gramavidiyal, Valavanur, Cuddalore & Sirkazhi where 1425 patients were the beneficiaries out of whom 363 patients were referred to MGMC & RI for further evaluation & treatment.

The Department of C ommunity M edicine H ealth C amps

From the month of January to March 2013, the department of Community Medicine has conducted four (04) Medical Camps in and around Pondicherry district.

On 22.1.2013 a multispecialty health camp was conducted in Azhagiyanatham, Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, by the department of Community Medicine in co-ordination with the department of Medicine, Surgery, OBG, Paediatric, Orthopaedics, ENT and Ophthalmology. 313 patients were the beneficiaries and 46 patients were referred to the various departments of MGMC&RI for further evaluation and treatment. Dr. Kanagarajan. P, Asst. Professor of Community Medicine, Dr. Krithiga, PG Com. Medicine & Mr. Manivasakam, medical social worker were there to monitor & coordinate the overall camp activities.

On 21.02.2013 another multispecialty medical camp was organized by the department of Community Medicine in coordination with various other specialist departments of MGMC&RI at Nallavadu, Tamilnadu. 153 patients were the beneficiaries and around 28 patients were referred to various specialist departments for further investigation and treatment. Dr.M. Prabakaran, Asst. Professor of Community Medicine, Dr. Rajkumar, PG Com. Medicine & Mr. Manivasakam, medical social worker were there to monitor & coordinate the overall camp activities.

Another similar health camp was organized on 07.03.2013 at Nallaur, Tindivanam, where around 222 patients were the beneficiaries and 58 patients were referred to various departments of MGMC&RI for further required investigation and treatment as in-patients. Dr. Fredrick Stephen, PG Com. Medicine & Mr. Manivasakam, medical social worker were there to monitor & coordinate the overall camp activities.

On 14.3.2013 again, a camp was organized by the department of Community Medicine in coordination with various departments to call it as a multispecialty camp at Kurampalayam, Villupuram, where 301 patients were beneficiaries and around 64 patients were referred to various department of MGMC&RI for further required treatment. Dr. Fredrick Stephen, PG Com. Medicine & Mr. Manivasakam, medical social worker were there to monitor & coordinate the overall camp activities.

The centres functions every week-day from 8.30 am to 4.00 pm except on Saturday, with activities up to 2.00 pm. The centres provides O.P. services to the local and rural people with the basic and emergency required treatment, laboratory diagnosis and act as referral centre for MGMC&RI for those patients who need further evaluation, investigations and treatment.

The O.P. Census of RHTC for the month of January 2013 was 983, among which 311 cases were new cases and 672 were old cases. For the month of February 2013 the census increased to 1139 with 400 new and 728 old cases. The O.P. census further increase in the month of March 2013, where 1221 patients were the beneficiaries among which 423 were new and 798 were old cases.

The O.P. Census of UHTC for the month of January 2013 was 973 among which 446 were new cases and 527 were the old cases as the beneficiaries. There was similar O.P. Census for the month of February 2013 of 992 among which 603 were new cases and 389 were the old cases among the beneficiaries. For the month of March 2013 the O.P. Census increased to 1180 in total among which 636 were the new cases and 524 were the old cases who attended the OPD for getting benefitted.

Apart from the O.P. services to the patients attending the health centres, a health education and health awareness session were done on every Thursday in UHTC, Ariayankuppam, basically for all the patients attending and the accompanying persons with them. The various topic covered were general hygiene and sanitation, common communicable diseases, Diabetes Mellitus, Balanced diet and nutrition, Hypertension and prevention, family planning, cancer awareness etc. Similarly on every Wednesday health educational and awareness session were organized in the RHTC, Seliamedu. The health education and awareness program conducted in the centres are well appreciated and were attended by the large number of local people as beneficiaries.

It has been 5 years since the inception of MEDICON and the conference is becoming more and more popular with every edition. MEDICON provides a viable platform for young researchers and budding doctors, to showcase their contributions to research. Out of 14 students selected for ICMR- STS 2012 and who had successfully completed STS 2012, seven students have been selected for MEDICON 2013, an International Conference for medical students to be held at New Delhi, from 11.4.13 to 14.4.13, at University College of Medical Sciences. On 21.2.13, the Annual Sports Meet, Talentia’13 kick started with the inauguration of the proceedings with the tennis matches in our sports complex for both men and women. A week later, throw ball for men and women were conducted, the former being introduced for the first time, was well received. The cricket matches for men were held in the week-ends. Cricket for women, re introduced this year were conducted in the following days. With the outdoor events being held on one side, the indoor events too were conducted for both men and women. With table tennis, carrom and chess played under the roof, the scorching heat was taken out of question. Volley ball and foot volley for men were conducted in the subsequent days. Kho-kho for men and women conducted in the following days after the intercollegiate sports, turned out to be the most exciting event attracting the majority.

Battles between the batches were brought to a hault with an Inter Collegiate Sports Meet round the corner.

Annual Sports Day, Talentia ’13 was inaugurated on 29.3.13 by the Vice Chancellor in charge, Dr. G. Muthurangan at MGMC sports complex. Everyone was pretty excited as the event was held for the first time within our campus and under the auspices of our new sports convener, Prof. Karthikeyan,ENT Dept. With many other senior faculties present, the proceedings began with the track events for both men and women. The two days were jam packed with events with minimum breathing space. Basket ball & foot ball for men and field events for both men & women were the events conducted during the days. Games for the faculty were held during the days with ample number of faculty participation. It was a treat for the students to see the sporty side of their teachers.On 30.3.13, the events ended with the relay events for both men & women. Sir Balaji Vidyapeeth University since its inception in 2008, conducted its first final year MBBS Examination in December, 2012. The theory examinations were conducted between 07.12.2012 and 17.12.2012 and the practical examination was conducted between 26.12.2012 and 29.12.2012.From Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, 111 Students appeared for the final examination Part II and out of which 66 are passed out successfully. From Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute, 72 Student appeared for the final examination Part II and 55 of them passed out successfully.

R epublic Day C elebr ations 2013

Mother India’s 64th Republic Day celebrated on 26th January 2013 with patriotic vigour.

The Nations tricolour flag was hoisted by Prof. G. Muthurangan, Dean of MGMCRI. He was accompanied

by Medical Superintendent, Vice Principals of IGIDS and KGNC and by Administrative officers of MGMCRI. In his thought provoking speech the Dean recalled the events that took place between 1947 and 1950 which paved the way for India becoming a democratic and Republic country. The highlight of the function was the chief guest for the day, a veteran freedom fighter who had crossed 100 years of age, Shri A.D Sundaram. Shir A.D.Sundaram in his patriotic

speech, spoke about his association with Shri Vallava Bai Patel and was proud about his wounds and suffering he has with him attained during the struggle. He was felicitated with a sandal garland and almost all present for the function got his blessings. It is to be noted that Shri A.D.Sundram had successfully undergone a hip replacement surgery at the age of 100 at our Institute by a team of doctors headed by our deputy Medical Superintendent, Dr Ravichandran, Assoc.

Prof., Orthopedics Department. The patriotic songs by the nursing students, the speech by a medical student, the brisk parade and the tricolor flag salutation were the highlights of the day. This program was initiated by the idea given by the respected Chairman Shri.M.K.Rajagopalan to facilitate and honor the hard works rendered by the non – teaching staff.

The Program was organized on 11th January 2013, Friday 5.30pm at A.D.R. Thirumana Mahal, Kanniyakovil, Bahoor. The Audience were welcomed by our Dean, Dr. Muthurangan who stressed the importance of such a program and appealed to the participants to remain united and strengthen the hands of our respected Chairman. The Deputy Medical Superintendent, Dr.Ravichandran in his felicitation honored the hard work of all the non teaching employees.

The highlight of the program was the presence of the Chairman from the beginning to the end. In his well applauded speech, Chairman thanked the all the non teaching employees , stressed for a better working atmosphere of the institute and assured many more forthcoming benefits for the employees of the institute.As a surprise event, 11 staff from MGMC&RI, KGNC, IGIDS who were selected by Chairman himself were honored with an appreciation award and a cash award of Rs 5000/- for the hard work rendered by them towards the welfare of the institute.

In commemoration of the WHO theme of “Promise, is a promise. Its time to act against violence to women”, the International Women’s Day celebrations (08.03.2013) was organized by SBV University on 16.03.2013 at MGMCRI. Prof. G.Muthurangan, Vice Chancellor incharge, inaugurated the celebration with an audience comprising of participant from clinical, non clinical, staff nurses and non teaching women staffs of MGMCRI, IGIDS & KGNC. Dr.V.N. Mahalakshmi, organizer of the event welcomed the gathering. Dr. Sudha Rao, Prof & Head, Dept. of Anatomy, MGMC&RI and Dr. Carounanidy Usha, Prof & Head, Dept. of Conservative, IGIDS, were the internal speakers.

External speakers, Dr. Uma Chandrasekar, Pondicherry University enlightened the audience about “Women in Workplace” while Dr. Vani Adhithan, Lawyer, highlighted the “Legal rights of Women”. Women cell of SBVU was convened for redressal of problems of all lady faculty members, female student and staff workers. Poster Competition: 12 groups were constituted each consisting of 8-10 students and following topics were assigned to them:- Signs and symptoms of TB – Adults & Children,,Mode of transmission,,How to diagnose pulmonary tuberculosis – Sputum examination, Where to go for sputum examination, Number of sputum examination, Importance of visiting to a government approved laboratoryTB is curable with DOTS - Availability of free medicines; Need of complete treatment, DOTS – What is DOTS; IP & CP in Cat I & II, Protect yourself against tuberculosis & BCG vaccine, Stop transmission of tuberculosis - Cough etiquette and ethics, TB & HIV & DMDrug resistant forms of tuberculosis – MDR, XDR, World TB Day theme -2013 (Stop TB in my lifetime) and Airborne infection control in hospitals .

Debate Competition: The topic for debate was ‘Tuberculosis eradication in near future - Possible or not possible’. Two groups consisting of seven students each were constituted in advance and they were guided by the faculty members for their points of discussion. The debate was well received by the audience with periodical applause from both

sides. It was certainly a thought provoking session for the students as well as the faculty members. A panel of judges was constituted to assess both posters and debate separately and winners for each event were suitably rewarded at the end.

I nnovations Teaching – L earning and Evaluation

3rd Basic workshop in Medical Education Technologies Medical Education Unit (MEU) conducted the “ 3rd Basic workshop in Medical Education Technologies” from 20.03.2013 to 22.03.2013. A total number of 20 participants of the cadre of Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors from various Clinical & Non Clinical Department were trained in the workshop under the supervision of MCI observer, Dr. Rashmi Vyas from CMC, Vellore.

The Workshop was not only a training programme for the faculty members but it was also made very interesting to the participants by well planned, co-ordinated lectures delivered by various members of the MEU in an interactive way.

The first day of the programme began with Registration and a surprise pre-test, followed by Inauguration. Then, ice breaking was conducted by Dr.Karthika Jayakumar and by the MCI observer, Dr. Rashmi Vyas. A board on ‘Talk of the Day’, set up by the Department of Community Medicine make the faculty members on rotation to write current health related news to make the students to keep abreast with the current public health issues. Having read the news the students ask and discuss with faculty members about the information and also share it with their fellow students – “LET US TALK HEALTH!!!” Also a novel idea of ‘Talking Pillars’ has come into being, whereby pictures on ‘Milestones of Preventive and Community Medicine’ are depicted on the pillars to make the student feel the sense of community service.

Urban Health Centre, Thiruporur & Rural Health Centre, Sembakkam A health talk for spreading awareness about tuberculosis was conducted at both the centers by the intern doctors under the guidance of the faculty members of the Department of Community Medicine on 26.03.2013. The interns prepared charts and posters in the local language for spreading the scientific message in a user-friendly manner. Special focus of the health talk was on: ‘Signs and symptoms of tuberculosis’, ‘The Need of early diagnosis by sputum microscopy’, ‘Directly observed Treatment’ and ‘Significance of completing the entire course of treatment’.

The Department of Public Health Dentistry organized a 3 day comprehensive school oral health program on 07.02.13, 08.02.13 and 16.02.13 at Krishnasamy Memorial Matriculation Higher secondary school, Cuddalore. In the program 2141 School Children were screened for oral diseases.

School children were educated about oral health and hygiene maintenance in their classrooms using flipcharts and models.

As a part of the program and social responsibility we have donated two dental health education poster titled “Tooth Brushing Methods” & “Immediate Management of Avulsed Tooth”. The posters were done by Miss.Nabela, C.R.R.I and Miss.Depthi C.R.R.I respectively during their final year teaching program. The Department of Public Health Dentistry In association with Indian Dental Association, Puducherry Branch conducted various activities to mark “World Dentist Day” on 06.03.13. Fourth National Conference on the theme “Millennium Changes in Nursing Perspectives” on 22.01.2013 and 23.01.2013 was conducted in Kasturba Gandhi Nursing College. Prof. Meera K Pillai, Principal, Sri Gokulam Nursing College, Trivandrum, was the chief guest. The resource persons from different states presented on the changes in their specialties focusing on the theme. There were many free paper and research paper presentations by the delegates.

The SAF of KGNC in association with the Dept of Child Health Nursing organized a Guest Lecture on15.02.2013.Ms. Priscilla Nithyakalyani, 2nd year MSc (N) student presented a case report on ‘Anorectal Agenesis.

Ms. Christy, 2nd year BSc (N) student presented a case report on ‘Hirshsprungs Disease”. Ms.Subramanian, 2nd year BSc(N) student presented a case report on ‘Hydronephrosis”.

A quiz on cardiovascular system was conducted wherein five teams from KGNC participated and won the prizes.

Dr.Ananda Balayogi, Honourable Advisor, Yoga Therapy unit, MGMC & RI was the chief guest and he gave a special address to the faculty on the benefits of Yoga. Dr. Meena Ramanathan, Coordinator, Yoga Therapy unit, MGMC & RI also delivered a speech on Yoga and Life style Modifications to combat stress. Out R each Activities World K idney Day

The Dept of Medical Surgical Nursing commemorated the world kidney day on 15.03.2013. The I Year P.B.B.Sc Student presented on, “Stop Kidney Attack Acute Kidney Injury”, the theme of the year. In addition the 2nd year B.Sc students organized a Dolly Kidney Show on prevention of ‘Acute Kidney Injury’ which was very innovative and created an impression in the mind of the students. The same was performed in the community area too which had a good response among the people.

The Dept of Community Health Nursing of KGNC in collaboration with Primary Health Center conducted a medical camp for school children from 06.02.13 to 07.02.13 at Vellai Thamarai Primary School, Redzucherry.

There was a good turnover of children and identified cases requiring treatment were referred to MGMC&RI. KGNC in collaboration with MGMC&RI conducted a medical camp in various areas. The B.Sc (N) II year Students participated and assisted in the Camp conducted at Cuddalore, Villupuram, Karaikal and Virudachalam.

NSS Activities

The NSS unit of KGNC conducted a camp for one week in Pillaiyarkuppam focusing on the theme of “Public Health and Sanitation” from 14.03.13 to 21.03.13 under the leadership of Ms.Elavarasi, Programme Officer of KGNC unit. The NSS volunteers took active participation and the activities carried out are as follows:Enumeration on public health and sanitation Environmental sanitation and planting trees in and around the area.

Road rally on awareness on ill effects of plastic use.

Health education on vitamin deficiency and physical assessments to rule out vitamin a deficiency disorders.

General medical camp Seminar on vector borne diseases.

P ulse Polio I mmunization C ampaign.

Pulse polio immunization campaign was organized by the Dept of Community Health Nursing on 20.03.13 &21.03.13 in Kirumampakkam and Nettapakkam. The M.Sc (N) students and B.Sc (N) students participated in the camp and covered a total of 1593 children for the immunization.

In commemoration of the World Leprosy Day, the Dept of Community Health Nursing organized an awareness programme on at Seliamedu focusing on the theme of the year, “The Old Has Passed Away, Behold The New Has Come”. The II year M.Sc Nursing students gave a health talk on importance of leprosy day and also conducted a screening camp along with the B.Sc (N) II year Students.

World C ancer Day

The Dept. of Medical Surgical Nursing commemorated the World Cancer Day on 06.02.2013 focusing on the theme “Cancer Do You Know? Dispel The Damaging Myths and Misconceptions about Cancer”. The first year M.Sc student Ms. Remya presented on an overview of cancer. An Extempore Competition was conducted for the third B.Sc Nursing students and prizes were distributed to the winners.
