A DAY

AT THE CIDEMAT

COLLABORATIVE WRITING ARTICLE By 4th of ESO Class Teobaldo Power High School

Our PE teacher, Peter, took us to the CIDEMAT this year. It is a Water Sports Center and we had a lot of fun. When we got there the first thing we did was a meeting with the monitors. They explained to us all the water sports we were going to practice that day. Then they gave us the wet suits and safety vest and we went to change rooms to put them on. We also divided into groups of 6 o 7 and then we went off to start with one water sport at a time.

Canoeing was one of the activities we practiced. We got very tired because we had to move our arms all the time. It’s also difficult because we got confused with the right and left side and at times we couldn’t coordinate with our classmate. We did these two things: we had a canoe race with the other classmates in our group and then we had to stand up in the canoe for 15 seconds. Many of us fell into the water. The canoe

race was the best part and it was really funny. The monitor was really friendly and nice. Another activity we tried out was board-skiing which consist on standing on a surfboard and holding on to a handle while the boat pulls you along and you have to keep balance. You could stand up on the boar (if you could) but it was very difficult to balance yourself. Many of our classmates fell into the water. The boat went really fast, so we felt so fee!!! We laughed all the time even at our selves.

We also practiced scuba diving in a swimming pool. The monitor explained to us carefully what we had to do with the wet suits and masks and oxygen tank. First we went to the shallow end of the pool and practiced there for a while. Some of us were kind of afraid but when we got some practice we went over to the deep end. Our PE teacher took some pictures of us in the deep end scuba diving around in the water. It was so amazing to do this water sport. For some of us it was much easier than it seems on TV with all the heavy equipment!!! One activity we really liked was going on a boat to try to see some whales. We took a zodiac and we

went three or four kilometres out to sea. We waited and waited and at first we didn´t see the whales, but we saw Santa Cruz from the boat. We could see the Auditorium, Las Teresitas Beach and a lot of things. And when we looked to the front of us we suddenly saw sperm whales. They were big and black. We only saw them for a couple of minutes because they were afraid and sank into the water. But, not all the

groups saw them. The groups that didn’t had the opportunity to swim in “international waters.” Going to the CIDEMAT was a great experience we had a great time there! Even if we were cold and tired… we ended up with a

smile on our faces. Next time, we all agreed that we would like to go again and do scuba diving in the sea. We liked it so much we all want to repeat the experience next year.
