SUMMER EDITION Its Time for All of Us to Do Our Part here was a time, early in the COVID-19 Pandemic, when we had no tools with which to combat, help stop the spread of the virus or prevent death from it. Thankfully, that is no longer the case. We know that ‘social distancing’ works. We know too that wearing a mask works and, we now have an anti-COVID vaccine that is better than 98% effective. We also know that with the onset of this new variant of the virus, that 95% of the deaths occurring today are among those who are unvaccinated. It’s true that the vaccine that has been developed, has not received complete and final approval by the FDA. However, all the scientific testing and data required by the Food and Drug Administration show that those who receive inoculation are over one-thousand times less likely to contract the virus or die from it. If someone said to you, “you have more than 1,000 chances and better than a 95% guarantee of winning the Lotto, would you buy a ticket?” Well, these are the odds you’re getting that you won’t contract or die from COVID-19 when you get vaccinated. Somehow, someway COVID-19, and the vaccine miraculously developed by American scientists to combat it, was turned into a “political” issue. This is not about politics and it’s not about personal rights. COVID-19 is a national health crisis affecting each and everyone of us and we all need to do our part in wiping it out. If in the 1940’s our nation met the Nazi menace and World War II with the same divisiveness and irrational thought that has gripped so many in this country regarding the COVID vaccine, we’d all be speaking German today. No one is asking anybody to enlist in the army to go fight a war somewhere. We’re only being asked to take a vaccine that we know works and to wear a mask in public gatherings that we also know works. When you think about the sacrifice our parents, grandparents and many of our sons and daughters have made – bringing us out of the depression, out of WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq, getting a ‘shot,’ and putting on a mask when we go out doesn’t seem to be too much to ask. If you have been vaccinated, I salute and applaud you for doing your part to protect your loved ones, neighbors, and friends – everyone. If you have not been vaccinated, now is the time to step up. Do your part in preventing one more death – maybe your own or a parent or child’s. It is the most effective tool we have in stopping and wiping-out this tragic pandemic.

MEET YOUR NEW CLERK: LORETTA C. WELLS ello, my name is Loretta C. Wells and I am excited and humbled to have been elected to serve as your new Clerk of Thornton Township! Thank you, Township residents, for believing and trusting in me. It is my honor to follow in the footsteps of my good friend, Jacqueline E. Davis-Rivera, someone I have always admired. I promise I will not let you down. To give you a little background about me, I am a lifelong resident of the Village of Phoenix, been married for 36 years to Terry Wells, and a mother of three. Daniel Chapel AME Zion Church in Phoenix, IL is my church home, which I have been an active member for 50 plus years. I’ve worked half of my life in the corporate field, before transitioning I worked thirty years as the Governmental Liaison at the Chicago Bar Association. My experience working in the Township includes serving as a member of the Human Relations Commission for the last ten years and chairperson of the Martin Luther King, Jr., Program for the past eight years. I also served as a Governmental Liaison, representing the following communities: Village of Phoenix, Village of South Holland, Village of Hazel Crest, and the Village of Thornton.

I have a strong commitment to working with the youth in our communities, currently serving as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Phoenix Library District and a member of South Holland School District 151 Board of Education. My dedication and commitment to service and education allowed me the opportunity to serve in several different capacities, including four years as Board President and ten years as President of the Band Parent Association. My involvement in other service organizations include The Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., South Suburban Chicago Chapter and Top Teens of America. I am currently the Teen Advisor and have been a member since 2013. In 2017, I was named Top Lady of the Year. New Trustee Darlene Gray Everett ewly elected Trustee Darlene Gray Everett has been serving the communities of Burnham, Calumet City, and Dolton for over 20 years as a school board member. Previously serving as President of School Board District 149, a Board Delegate and Director At-Large for the Illinois School Board Association and Vice-President for the Calumet City Library. She is the owner and operator of Everett Safe Express Transportation LLC, located in Calumet City, IL. Her professional experience also includes working as an Office Manager, Medical Assistant, and District Administrator for the U.S. House of Representatives. Trustee Gray Everett has received numerous awards from organizations, such as the Illinois Service Center, (ISC4) in January of 2015. In March of 2015, Trustee Darlene was recognized as an Emeritus Board Leadership Academy Fellow. She has been married to Charles Everett for 32 years and they have three children. hroughout these unprecedented times, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart have consistently shown to be reliable partners and supporters of Thornton Township. We would like to thank them for their willingness and generosity for being such a great resource. Supervisor Zuccarelli said “We can do more working together than working apart.” We were able to provide free electronic recycling services through a sponsorship from Cook County Sheriff’s Office for our Earth Day event and July 10th Electronic Recycling event. Thornton Township partnered with Cook County Health & Hospital Systems to provide over 200 food box vouchers to Cook County Residents for a COVID vaccination Clinic in June.We will continue to partner with other entities to provide much needed assistance.

Our service complies with all American With Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements. ear after year we at Thornton Township’s after school program have seen our children and families overcome great hurdles. It is inspiring to witness the resilience of a third grader who is having health challenges but shows up every day with assignments in hand, or the adolescent whose parent passed away and they continue to encourage others. Rather than trying to exist in a vacuum, these families connect with us for after school programming. Many of us are worried about our children post- pandemic. While we at the after-school program know there is significant work ahead of us, we also know the brilliance of our children and families. Our community has always survived the hurdles. We have always made it through, even if “by the skin of our teeth.” Kudos to those of us who made it through! Now, what do we do to become better as a community? To see our strength and brilliance actualized? To see the many gifts and talents build up the community?

We are gathering information from you and the community through an online survey. This survey will help us develop a robust after school program. We want to hear from you! We need to hear from you! Summer Enrichment Program RECAP 2021 ue to the pandemic, the Summer Enrichment Program was condensed to service a maximum of 60 families. Thornton Township Summer Enrichment Program provides fully-funded STEM related excursions to the youth of Thornton Township between the ages of 10-13. The program provides an opportunity for youth to stay active during the summer while enjoying activities that develop cultural awareness. The Summer Enrichment Program 2021 destinations included: Sagawau Environmental Learning Center, Fair Oaks Farm, Kids STEM Studio, Kidinary Cooking Academy, Amish Acres of Napanee and an over night camping trip to Cedar Lake. The students of this year’s summer enrichment program expressed their excitement about participating, stating they were thrilled to finally be able to leave the house to experience adventurous trips. Participant Giovonni said, “It was an awesome experience, I wish this was all year and not just in the summer”. “I got to see a lot of new places that I never seen before and learned a lot of new things like how to make your own video games.” His favorite destination was the over night camping trip to Cedar Lake. “I never went camping before, I would definitely go camping again” said Giovonni. Other students in the program stated they look forward to the Thornton Township Summer Enrichment Program and can’t wait to see the excursions for 2022. Days in the Park ven amid a pandemic, the Township continues to offer services and serve the community, just like other Township programs, services and events, Days in the Park were greatly missed by many residents last summer. Some may never get a chance to enjoy a summer picnic; thanks to Supervisor Frank Zuccarelli he makes sure that everyone in Thornton Township gets an opportunity to enjoy a free picnic This past June, Thornton Township brought back Days In the Park where Youth & Family Services hosts picnics weekly throughout the Township, providing free food, live music, games and family-friendly activities open to all 180,000 residents of Thornton Township. Days In the Park was created to bring the people of our Township together and provide a greater sense of community. In addition, it provides a fellowship program to youth to assist in community event planning throughout the summer. For more information contact 708-596-6040.

Senior Lawn Care hornton Township, Frank Zuccarelli Assistance Program (ZAP), provides seniors in Thornton Township with low cost lawn maintenance. Our weekly services (weather permitting) include mowing, edging and blowing. The program is offered from May through October. Senior applicants must be at least 60 years old with no able bodies under age 60 in their home. Thornton Township’s ZAP program is staffed with ambitious high school and college students lead by our awesome staff of team leaders. The program assists nearly 1,000 seniors per year. We currently service 175 to 200 lawns daily throughout Thornton Township’s 17 municipalities. Our office staff is easily reachable and committed to ensuring all routes are completed accurately and effectively. We strive to satisfy each resident with our lawn care services. Our dedicated manager, Stanley Brown, appreciates the opportunity to manage an operation where students display untiring efforts to service our seniors on a daily basis. Lunch & Learn ince 2020, we have been on a hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic and cannot wait to get back to some normalcy. Community Relations has resumed planning community outreach programs and events. The newest program is the Lunch & Learn series. In May of 2021, the community resident team developed this series to offer insightful and important information that can be beneficial for all while enjoying lunch on us. In addition, our Thornton Township residents were eager to get out and network with staff and friends. he South Suburban College (SSC) drive-thru COVID-19 testing site is now offering Johnson & Johnson vaccinations. The one dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine is available for individuals ages 18 years and older. Vaccination is available three days a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and testing is available the same days plus Saturday. No appointment is necessary for the drive-thru set up at the College’s Main Campus northwest parking lot at 15800 South State Street, South Holland, Illinois. SSC also recently added a second COVID-19 testing site at its Oak Forest Center (OFC) to provide free testing through the SHIELD Illinois program. The OFC-SHIELD testing site is initially limited to two days a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and is located at 16333 South Kilbourn Avenue, Oak Forest, Illinois. Testing results are available within 24 hours. If demand increases, dates and times will be expanded.
