CONCERT GUIDE 2016 | 2017 Season
Dear CIM Family, Welcome to the Cleveland Institute of Music’s 2016-17 concert season! CIM is proud to be one of the largest concert presenters in the Midwest, and this season is overflowing with outstanding programs by our acclaimed faculty and exceptional performances by CIM student musicians. Week after week is filled with an enviable who’s who of repertoire, and this year we present a unique opportunity to experience the work of Pierre Boulez, one of the most influential composers and conductors of our time who holds a special place in the hearts of Cleveland classical music audiences. We will celebrate his contributions to modern music through the Boulez Legacy Series: five concerts and a pre-concert lecture featuring scholars and musicians who collaborated with Boulez over his career. You will also want to experience our two fully staged operas showcasing the work of CIM’s remarkable voice students. Our opera season begins this fall with a highly anticipated presentation of two one-act operas, including Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Menotti’s Amelia al Ballo. The acclaimed Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra will return to Severance Hall, home of The Cleveland Orchestra, in three exhilarating concerts: two are free to the public, with the third a featured concert for our 2017 Women’s Committee Benefit. I would like to acknowledge the residents of Cuyahoga County for their support of CIM through a generous operating grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture, which enables CIM to make most of our programming free and open to the public. With hundreds of opportunities to experience CIM’s faculty, students and guest artists in concert, we look forward to seeing you at Mixon and Kulas Halls, in Severance Hall and around the community. CIM’s first name is Cleveland, where grit meets sophistication and where our students enter with a dream and graduate with a career. I look forward to experiencing CIM — and Cleveland — with you. Puccini’s Suor Angelica is the touching story of a girl whose family has placed her in a convent, much to her torment. Will she be saved by a miracle? THE BOULEZ LEGACY In an artistic life which began as the enfant terrible of contemporary music and ended as its éminence grise, Pierre Boulez was one of the seminal musical figures of our time. Over the course of a career spanning almost seventy years as a composer, conductor, author, teacher and provocateur, his influence touched virtually every corner of the concert music world. CIM celebrates his music and explores his musical legacy in the city where he had one of his longest musical relationships. Select concerts will be webcast live from CIM. Visit cim.edu for details.
