2022-23 ENDOWMENT FUND PERFORMANCE REPORT

A Message of Thanks
Dear friends,
It is with great pleasure that I share with you our Endowment Performance Report for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2023. This report highlights the many ways the endowment served the CIM community last year, primarily through scholarships, and the funds and donors whose gifts made that robust performance possible.
My gratitude to these donors knows no bounds. Thanks to their generosity, our Second Century Campaign is surging past $25 million, and CIM’s vision of a materially smaller, more affordable institution is closer than ever. Most of the goals we set forth in our centennial plan are now bold accomplishments.
Certainly, when it comes to the endowment, 2023 was an excellent year. Between the much improved performance of the global market and prudent asset management at CIM, the endowment grew by 10.7 percent . Not since the pandemic has CIM been so well equipped to deliver on its mission.
Special thanks is due to those donors who established new endowment funds. Your gifts have empowered CIM to increase the number of full-tuition scholarships it offers and thereby to lower the net cost of a CIM education for the world’s most talented classical music students. This is the reason we’re all here.
I consider it a privilege to serve as Chair of CIM’s Investment Committee. My esteemed colleagues and I take pride in seeing to it that our beloved institution remains financially secure for the current generation and many, many more to come. Thank you again for your generous support.
With appreciation,

CIM Investment Committee

CIM ENDOWMENT PERFORMANCE REPORT
Results for fiscal year ended June 30, 2023.
The endowment is made up of approximately 260 individual endowment funds that provide perpetual financial support for scholarships, professorships, academic and performance programs, facilities maintenance, and other education-related programs. Approximately 62.5 percent of the endowment benefits CIM as a whole, with the remainder earmarked for individual scholarships. Distributions from the endowment totaled $2.5 million, representing 12.3 percent of CIM’s operating revenue in fiscal 2023.
Investment Objectives
The investment objectives of the CIM endowment are to manage its funds in a manner that will maximize total return on assets to support the programs of the Institute and realize the greatest impact as intended by donors. The objective of CIM’s professional investment managers is to maximize total return on the portfolio (appreciation and income) sufficient to preserve and increase the purchasing power of the assets for both current purposes and to ensure ongoing intergenerational support, with a level of risk acceptable to CIM.

CIM alumni Irad and Rebecca Carmi pay it forward with $300,000 endowed scholarship gift

Irad Carmi (BM ’87, MM ’88) knows what it’s like to be an international student at CIM. He also knows the value of a CIM education. For those reasons and others, he and his wife Rebecca Carmi (BM ’87, MM ’89) endowed and recently expanded the Rebecca and Irad Carmi Scholarship for Israeli Students, now a $500,000 fund.
“The only way to give back is to pay it forward,” said Carmi, a CIM Trustee and a vice president at Oracle Corp. “I definitely count CIM as the source of my success.”
The first of two life-changing breaks for Carmi was a scholarship. Had he not received financial support, he would not have come to CIM, and thus would not have enjoyed an early career as an orchestral flutist or gained the intensity of focus that later fueled his remarkable
achievement as a software executive. He also would not have met Rebecca, his future wife, a voice major who remains active in music as a recitalist, cantor, and opera producer.
The second was finding a personal connection to Cleveland. Had Carmi not found a family friend while at CIM, homesickness might have nipped his career aspirations in the bud.
“The combination of being able to afford CIM and remain connected with home was critical,” Carmi said. “Because of that, CIM was a great experience and a real adventure for me.”
All of that is now proving true all over again for master’s student violinist Hadar Zaidel (I. Kaler), the second recipient of the Carmi

Scholarship. (The first was composer Yoav Sadeh, who graduated in 2022.)
Zaidel is at CIM with financial support, and she’s successful in part because the Carmis – whose relatives also happen to know Zaidel’s mother – provide vital companionship, helping her feel at home in Cleveland.
“It’s beyond any expectation that I had,” Zaidel said. “Having them here, it’s like having a second family. They’re so nice and sweet.”
Like Irad Carmi decades ago, Zaidel dreams of a performance career; she aspires to join an orchestra or possibly a chamber music ensemble. Recently, she won a seat in Ohio’s Canton Symphony Orchestra.

Also like Carmi, though, she’s open to new possibilities. At CIM, Zaidel has developed an interest in music theory and is now contemplating a turn in that direction. Whether she makes that turn and where it leads remain to be seen. Maybe Zaidel will follow in Carmi’s footsteps and pursue a career of which she as yet has no notion.
Whatever she does, of course, it will only be possible because she attended CIM, which she did because of the Carmis.
“I don’t feel like I’m done studying,” Zaidel said. “I like to open doors. I feel like I still have a lot to learn.”
