2016 Annual Report

Together, we can do great things.

2016 ANNUAL REPORT

It is through your support that we are making great strides toward a new era of mental health awareness.

When it comes to untreated mental illness, homelessness, suicide, and the failings of our criminal justice and health systems, there is no us or them – it’s just us. Each of us has been drawn together as a team because we have seen how each of these dire issues can ravage individuals, families, and communities. This 2016 Annual Report is a tribute to you – our team members. It is ultimately your compassion, generosity and unwavering support upon which this team relies. It is your kindness to act when others won’t, to stand together side-by-side as you make it possible to take someone by the hand, give them hope in the aftermath of great personal tragedies, and lead them to support groups, pro bono counseling, treatment, a safe place to live and new beginnings. To exemplify all that you do for our community in so many different ways, this Annual Report is a showcase of donors who represent you… Brian gave to honor his mother, Cheryl. She is impacted by bipolar disorder but, more importantly, she is Brian’s lifelong hero. An amazing group of volunteers in Oklahoma City and Tulsa gave because they know how much it means to welcome our new tenants with baskets full of essential household items at a time when they have nothing except renewed hope for the future. Kenneth gave because he’s on the front lines of ending the stigma of mental illness that kept him from seeking treatment far too long. Charmaine gave in memory of her late brother, David. Sadly, he died by suicide but his legacy lives on in Charmaine’s dedication to raise awareness about our suicide prevention trainings and our Survivors of Suicide support group, which she faithfully attends. Like each of these inspirational donors, you gave to us in 2016 because you want your community to end homelessness, to prevent suicides, and to ensure people get the help, support, and treatment they need when they need it most. The stories shared in this Annual Report represent just a few of the different ways you and the rest of your teammates are involved, contribute and give back to our state. Your gifts, stories and conviction to change lives inspire us every day. For this, we are forever thankful. Gratefully, Michael W. Brose, MSW CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION OKLAHOMA

BRIAN WEST

PRESIDENT, BOARD OF DIRECTORS MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION OKLAHOMA

When Brian West was 9 years old, his mother and lifelong hero, Cheryl, was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. To help Oklahomans just like his mom, Brian serves as the President of the Association’s Board of Directors. He also joined a handful of Association supporters in 2016 to pilot our first peer-to-peer fundraising campaign to attract new donors by sharing his family’s story.

“ My mom was lucky. She had a family support system that was there for her during this fight. Still, it was almost an impossible task. The financial burden and daily strain were almost too much to bear. ”

“Today, my mom lives a very happy life. She still battles the symptoms of the illness, but she fights them every day. She did this all while loving her children and being a wonderful example of someone who never gave up,” Brian wrote on his peer-to-peer campaign site. During his peer-to-peer campaign, Brian stressed that almost everyone – 1 out of 5 of us – knows someone impacted by mental illness. Many of us have also wondered how to help someone experiencing homelessness and felt the sorrow that comes when we lose someone to suicide. For Brian, this is particularly meaningful because he lost his best friend to suicide at age 19. “These issues impact our city in so many areas, from our overcrowded prisons to our continued increases in health care costs,” Brian wrote. “So many of society’s issues are caused by our inability to solve problems related to mental health. By contributing to this cause, I promise you are working toward the solution. You are giving to an organization that has found solutions that work.”

“ I cannot imagine what it would have been like for someone without any support, someone with no resources, someone fighting this illness all alone.”

Getting the welcome party started.

When someone moves off the streets and into a safe place to live, oftentimes all they have in the world is what can fit in a single backpack. They do not have a mattress to sleep on or even the most basic of necessities. Seeing this huge need to help our new tenants overcoming homelessness, a small band of volunteers – we call them the Welcome Party – help turn empty apartments into warm homes. Since October 2016, they have surprised new tenants with overflowing welcome baskets full of essential items ranging from dishes to toiletries and so much more. They even arranged for furniture donations, including those made possible by a generous gift from the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation. The Welcome Party is led by Beth Toops in Tulsa, and Lori Wharton, Keiko Wright and Emily Brandenburg in Oklahoma City. Their team includes spouses, friends, co-workers, advocates and even Beth’s 93-year-old mother. When a tenant moves in, a handful of these amazing volunteers gather for an impromptu celebration with plenty of hugs, a few happy tears, and enough smiles to make their cheeks ache in the best way. Ask the Welcome Party about some of the most amazing people they have met and they’ll tell you stories like John’s. Before John moved into our first apartment complex in Oklahoma City, Frontier Apartments, John spent four years living in a makeshift campsite too scared to seek help. Now, because of the Welcome Party, John has a bed, furniture and so many reminders around his apartment that people really do care about him.

T H E ROA D TO SU P P O RT:

In 2016 we provided a safe place to live for 2,859 tenants, many of whom are impacted by mental illness and homelessness. They live within our 27 apartment complexes across Tulsa, and our very first apartment complex in Oklahoma City, Frontier Apartments. At each of our apartment complexes, our case managers walk alongside tenants to help them connect to life-changing support and services.

It is powerful to see how the work of a few volunteers can improve the lives of those we serve.

KENNETH SMITH

FATHER, CYCLIST AND MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCATE

Mental illness does not define Kenneth Smith. He is not “crazy” or “mentally ill.” These are stigmatizing words that kept Kenneth from seeking help for his obsessive compulsive disorder for far too long. During our 2016 May is Mental Health Month campaign, #iAMaPersonFirst, Kenneth’s message to Oklahoma was this: “I am defined as a father, a cyclist and a mental health advocate ready to end stigma now and forever.” As one of the faces of the campaign, Kenneth stressed the power of using person-first language to give “people impacted by mental illness” and “people experiencing homelessness” the compassion, respect and treatment everyone deserves. Not only did Kenneth lend his story to the campaign, he gave a gift to support our work. And he used his bicycle to lead a bicycle tour of our housing and recovery programs. The tour included stops at our peer-run drop-in center, Denver House, where all of our staff members have experienced the difficulties of living with a mental illness in their own lives, giving them the ability to truly empathize with our participants. “Leading the housing tour allowed me to show others how beneficial cycling can be for one’s mental health,” Kenneth said. “But what meant so much to me was showing that I, and all of the inspirational people they met on the tour, are not defined by our mental illness. We are people first capable of so many amazing things that make a difference.”

“I am defined as a father, a cyclist and mental health advocate, ready to end stigma now and forever.” – KENNETH SMITH

E M P OW E R I NG R ECOVE RY:

Our Recovery Services programs seek to empower people impacted by mental illness, particularly those with limited social networks, to engage in community life. The Association applies a mixed-income, mixed-population model at each of our housing sites that fosters community reintegration, neighborhood stabilization, and homelessness prevention. We are ensuring mental health care services are available to our housing tenants and all people we serve through programs focused on socialization and case management such as Peer Outreach Services, Creating Connections, Employment First, and our peer-run drop-in centers.

CHARMAINE RICE

SURVIVORS OF SUICIDE SUPPORT GROUP MEMBER

Twice a month for more than two years, Charmaine Rice surrounded herself with people who understand what it’s like to lose a loved one to suicide. They each had a story to tell about what drew them together. For Charmaine, it was the loss of her younger brother, David, a Navy veteran who died by suicide in 2014. After David’s passing, some family members simply could not accept or talk about the realities of his death. She struggled alone with the pain until she discovered our Survivors of Suicide Support Group, where she and other members could have frank conversations, share coping skills and begin to heal. Last year, Charmaine gave a gift to the Association in David’s memory. It was her way of showing her gratitude. Then she went one step further by accepting our request to speak with a newspaper reporter about attending the Survivors of Suicide Support Group and her dedication to raising awareness about our suicide prevention trainings. “I want everyone to know help is out there, whether you have lost someone or if you’re ready to learn the warning signs of suicide to prevent one more,” Charmaine said. “Twice as many people die by suicide as homicide, yet people don’t want to talk about it, or feel shame about seeking help.”

SUP P O RT I S AVA I L A B LE :

As a survivor – a family member or friend of the person who died by suicide – our Survivors of Suicide Support Group members come together to share, listen, teach and learn with others also overcoming the loss of a loved one. Meetings are held on the first and third Thursdays of each month in Tulsa and Oklahoma City. Our free, one-hour suicide prevention training, QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer), is offered by request across the state. To schedule a QPR training, call us at 918.585.1213 or 405.943.3700.

“ We each have a role in saving lives.” – CHARMAINE RICE

Highlights:

New Pet Project Kennels When someone experiences homelessness, so does their dog. Our Pet Project outreaches to people impacted by mental illness and homelessness who previously refused medical care and sacrificed housing and services because they simply could not take their dog with them. As a part of the solution, we celebrated the opening of four brand new dog kennels located outside of Denver House, our peer-run drop-in center. They were specially built in 2016 by Tulsa-area Boy Scouts for the pets of Tulsans experiencing homelessness. In addition to caring for dogs while the owners are in Denver House, Pet Project also offers a free Vaccinations and Wellness Clinic every six weeks.

Building Oklahoma, Building Lives Capital Campaign We successfully completed the Association’s statewide Building Oklahoma, Building Lives $12 million integrated capital campaign! Co-chaired by Becky and Jack Frank, and Drew Edmondson, the campaign raised the funds to help renovate the Association’s five floors in our future headquarters at Legacy Plaza, add to the Association’s capital replacement reserve and endowment, and begin offering affordable housing in Oklahoma City.

Our First OKC Apartment Complex We announced the purchase of our first apartment complex in Oklahoma City, Frontier Apartments! This allowed us to expand our service model to Oklahoma City as a collaboration between the Association and the Homeless Alliance. Our 2016 Tenants The Association provided safe, decent and affordable housing to 2,859 combined tenants in Tulsa and Oklahoma City, many of whom are impacted by mental illness and homelessness. They don’t just have an apartment to call home; our case managers help them connect to critical services in the community, including mental health treatment, case management, support groups, job training and more.

#iAMaPersonFirst May is Mental Health Month Campaign We cringe every time someone increases stigma by saying “the mentally ill” and “the homeless.” During our 2016 May is Mental Health Month campaign, #iAMaPersonFirst, we raised awareness about the importance of using person-first language. It’s time to give “people impacted by mental illness” and “people experiencing homelessness” the compassion and respect everyone deserves.

suicide

Preventing Youth Suicide In the 2015-2016 school year in Tulsa and Oklahoma City schools, over 1,600 sixth through twelfth graders were screened by our youth wellness screening program, TeenScreen. Of those students, 447 screenings indicated a mental health issue and/or warning signs of suicide. Without gifts like yours, these young people would not have been able to identify early indicators of mental illness and warning signs of suicide. Because of you, we worked alongside their parents to help link them to counseling in their community.

Sock Drive & Backpack Giveaway! On #GivingTuesday, the national day of giving and throughout December we received socks and undergarments for our #GivingTuesday Sock Drive. Your gifts helped make a difference in the lives of men, women and kids living on the streets of Tulsa and Oklahoma City! In addition, nearly 300 individuals received backpacks full of essentials as an early holiday gift thanks to Bank of America Merrill Lynch.

National Zarrow Mental Health Symposium Ready For Zero More than 1,000 attendees from 33 states and Canada attended our national conference! We co-presented the Symposium with Community Solutions, a nonprofit that organized the national campaign Zero: 2016. Together we attracted 200 speakers and offered more than 130 breakout sessions addressing innovative and sustainable solutions for housing and recovery.

Special Services Docket In partnership with the Tulsa City Municipal Court and other local non-profit organizations, the Special Services Docket is an alternative court program that creatively identifies pathways of early diversion for people impacted by mental illness and substance use disorders. It helps link participants to necessary resources and treatment and, ultimately, prevents incarceration. Between 2014 and 2016, the Special Services Docket had over 150 participants and saved the City of Tulsa over 9,000 days of incarceration and $700,000 in jail costs.

Legislation that Matters Your gifts helped fund our advocacy work at the Capitol. Because of your support, we lobbied to protect core mental health funding, supported criminal justice reform and built awareness of the benefits of adopting Medicaid expansion. One of our key victories was working behind the scenes to successfully pass the Labor Commissioner Mark Costello Act, a new law that clarifies language regarding when a judge can court order an Oklahoman to outpatient mental health treatment.

Faith & Mental Health Expands to OKC Our Caring For Your Congregation’s Mental Health series began in 2002 in Tulsa. In 2016, the event now known as Faith & Mental Health expanded into Oklahoma City as a part of the “Ministry During a Mental Health Crisis” seminar presented by the Association and the Oklahoma Conference of Churches. In both Tulsa and OKC, Faith & Mental Health helps faith community leaders, staff, lay leaders and chaplains adequately address mental health issues in their congregations.
