A NOTE FROM MIKE BROSE, CEO This year marks 25 years since I took the position of CEO of Mental Health Association Oklahoma. Much has changed over the past quarter-century. The Association has grown significantly, owns and manages more than 1,500 units of affordable housing, and served more than 42,000 Oklahomans in 2017. One thing, however, remains the same: Too many Oklahomans ignore mental illness, homelessness, suicide, and the fact that our jails and prisons have become de facto institutions. Oftentimes, it’s only when one or more of these dire issues impact friends, co-workers and loved ones do people finally take notice.

Mental illness, homelessness, suicide and incarceration are TOO BIG TO IGNORE. The stories shared in the 2017 Annual Report represent why we cannot -- and will not -- stop making this message heard loud and clear in our communities, the halls of the Capitol, and in every Oklahomans’ living room.

When I was homeless for a year and a half, my kids would sometimes visit me at the shelter.

That meant a lot, but I know it was heartbreaking for them to see their dad like that. To make matters worse, my untreated mental illness often left me hearing voices and seeing things no one else could see.

My homelessness – anyone’s homelessness – is too big to ignore because no one deserves to feel alone, scared and hopeless. That’s why I’m thankful you cared enough about me, and everyone wanting a better life, by donating to the Association.

Because of gifts like yours, I was able to move into Association housing in late 2016 and continue to thrive today. All the while, I’ve stayed connected to my life-changing mental and physical health care in the community.

Plus, the Association’s Creating Connections socialization program regularly takes me on fun outings, like bowling or going to the movies, with other people who understand what it’s really like to live in recovery from mental illness.

Looking back on my journey, one of the best days of my life was moving into my apartment and then telling my kids I was finally safe at home. Now they come over to my place and we spend more quality time together than ever.

HOMELESS OKLAHOMANS counted among the people experiencing homelessness during the 2017 Point-in-Time count.

HOMES PROVIDED In 2017 the Association provided safe, decent and affordable housing for tenants in Tulsa and Oklahoma City, many of whom are impacted by mental illness and homelessness. They don’t just have an apartment to call home; our case managers help them connect to critical services in the community, including mental health treatment, case management, support groups, job training and more.

I once had a “normal” life as a nursing assistant.

Then my untreated bipolar disorder spiraled my life into a manic period where I couldn’t remember what I’d done for days. I can never explain how scared I was for my life as it slipped away.

After I got out of an Oklahoma City mental health crisis center, I had no other choice but to quit my nursing job and move back home with my mom.

The amazing part of my story is I’ve actually gained so much since I seemingly lost everything.

Mental illness is too big to ignore because I’m among the 1 in 4 Oklahomans impacted by mental illness. But I also represent the fact that recovery is possible and happening every day, including at the very place that changed my life forever, the Association’s peer-run drop-in center, Lottie House.

I started frequenting Lottie House in 2014 because treatment was not very successful at that point, and I tended to isolate myself at home. I was shy in the beginning, but I eventually opened up and started participating more in the support groups, bingo and karaoke. It was an honor when the staff asked me to become a Lottie House volunteer. After nearly a year of volunteering, I was hired part-time because the staff recognized my potential and saw me as a person not as my diagnosis.

I have this message to everyone who is among the 1 in 4 people living with mental illness – maybe that’s someone you know and love, or maybe it’s even you: You will have to overcome many obstacles to access care, but there is life after your diagnosis. It may not seem like it now, but mental illness does not define you. For me, it actually gave me a rewarding life I could never have imagined.

took suicide prevention training, learning how to Ask a Question, Save a Life. Our free QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer) is the mental health version of CPR.

I never thought my big sister, Christin, would die by suicide. As a nurse and a community volunteer, she always put other people first and herself last. I miss her so much. That’s why I’m on a mission to raise awareness about the Association’s free suicide prevention training, Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR).

I knew Christin endured severe depression for much of her life. Still, my parents and I were, and still are, shocked that she died by suicide.

But the fact is my family isn’t alone in our loss.

It breaks my heart knowing, on average, 123 people in the U.S. die by suicide each day.

That’s roughly the equivalent of a passenger jet crashing every single day. Imagine how quickly our country would rally to end an airliner crashing every day yet suicide largely remains an ignored epidemic.

I am grateful for your gifts to the Association in 2017. Because of your generosity, the Association trained more than 800 Oklahomans in QPR to identify the warning signs of suicide.

Now those same Oklahomans stand ready to ask someone the tough but essential question: “Are you thinking about killing yourself?”

Then, because of their QPR training, they’re equipped to walk with their friend, co-worker or loved one as they connect to treatment before it’s too late.

INCARCERATION

“

When my son, Talon, was born five years ago, my house was in foreclosure, I hadn’t worked for six years, and I was facing 12 years to life for drug trafficking.

I give thanks every day that my life, and the life of my son, weren’t thrown away to incarceration.

Instead, I was diverted out of prison and into treatment. Today, I’m balancing my full-time job with the Mental Health Association, challenging masters-level business courses and motherhood.

YEARLY INCARCERATION COSTS for someone impacted by serious mental illness:

$23,000 $4,000 FOR A YEAR OF PROGRAMS that promote recovery and reintegration into the community.

Other Oklahomans impacted by mental illness and addiction haven’t been so lucky.

Incarceration is too big to ignore because the fact is Oklahoma incarcerates more women per capita than any other state. And out of those entering the Department of Corrections for nonviolent offenses, 82 percent need mental health or substance use treatment. This is unacceptable.

Your gifts to the Association in 2017 helped make a difference by supporting statewide advocacy efforts at the Capitol. Our message is: prioritize treatment NOT punishment.

I personally know when you have a felony conviction, attaining competitive employment is almost impossible. But through the Association’s Employment First program, I went from working as a part-time receptionist almost four years ago to being among the top-level staff in the leasing department.

Thank you for believing in my ability to change, heal and, most importantly, be the mother I always wanted to be for Talon.

Homeless Street Outreach

Zarrow Mental Health Symposium

Our new Homeless Outreach and Rapid Response program has made more than 500 visits to individuals living on the streets in the past year. Since the program began in April 2017, this unique homeless outreach program has successfully helped 19 people achieve housing. On average, these courageous people were homeless for at least six years.

Dr. Cornel West’s closing plenary session, “Justice is What Love Looks Like in Public,” inspired the massive crowd with powerful reminders that we can join him as “allseason love warriors” as we stand up and do everything we can to promote equity for the most marginalized of us. New Association Website!

Our new website, www.mhaok.org, reflects our statewide growth while providing our visitors with a clean, easily-navigated design. Plus, it is packed with in-depth info about mental health, homelessness, criminal justice reform, and more.

My Mind Matters Day at the Capitol Advocates from across the state rallied to oppose the state plan to cut outpatient services for mental illnesses and addictions.

Thousands of people, including our own staff and supporters, showed up in record numbers to tell legislators to quit the cuts to save our services.

Throughout the budget crisis, the Association sent out urgent Advocacy Alerts to supporters, and powerful statements to the media. Our message to legislators and Governor Mary Fallin was: Fill the ENTIRE $215 million budget gap, make it sustainable and make the right decision to save lives.

May is Mental Health Month Campaign Our #MyTruth campaign featured four stories that put a face to the most dire issues we’re struggling with as a state: suicide, homelessness, barriers to mental health treatment, and incarcerating people impacted by mental illness and substance use. As much as the stories provided a stark portrait of what life is really like for individuals and their loved ones, the campaign focused on providing our supporters with actions so they can work toward solutions.

Our New HQ, Legacy Plaza It’s official! Legacy Plaza in Tulsa will be the Association’s new headquarters, which will be shared with four other nonprofits.

Special thanks to The Anne & Henry Zarrow Foundation and all donors to the Building Oklahoma, Building Lives capital campaign for helping us find and fund a new office space for our ever-expanding staff. We’re set to move in summer 2018!

Peer-to-Peer Fundraisers Amazing volunteers and staff members launched their own 2017 fundraising campaigns benefiting the Association.

TeenScreen 2,077 sixth through twelfth graders participated in our wellness screening program TeenScreen in the Tulsa and Oklahoma City communities. 622 youth screened through TeenScreen indicated a mental health issue and/or warning signs of suicide. Our staff in Tulsa and Oklahoma City walked side-by-side with them as they connected to counseling in the community.
