(page 28) Oregon Leadership Institute (OLI) is a program developed by the Oregon Council for Hispanic Advancement for Latino high school students. OLI meets monthly on Saturdays. Participants discuss topics such as leadership, culture, heritage, personal responsibility and attitude. Students are led by mentors who are currently college students. (page 2) Project YESS (Youth Employability Support Services) is for those who are age 16 - 21, in need of General Educational Development (GED) and are motivated to transition to college or advanced training. Support services include bus passes, work clothes, school supplies, etc. (page 2) The mission of TRIO College First is to identify first generation and/or low-income eligible youth with the potential for postsecondary education and encourage them to complete high school and enroll in the college or university of their choice. The program targets Centennial High School, Centennial Middle School, Gresham High School, David Douglas High School, Ron Russell Middle School and Parkrose High School. MHCC has a dozen programs in all, designed to answer a variety of needs and aspirations. They all center on taking advantage of opportunity to move forward into career and life. Those opportunities and the programs that reflect them include: College Now provides high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to get a head start on their college experience. Students take college level coursework from MHCC from approved high school instructors. All courses are taken at the students’ high school and students receive credit

You know that MHCC has been helping students reach their academic, career and personal goals for nearly half a century, but you may not be aware that the college also provides opportunities, resources and support to many high schools and hundreds of high school students in the district. “We set the stage for high school students, provide a taste of the curriculum and get them prepared for higher education,” says Sydney Frost, manager for student outreach. “We have programs for firstgeneration college students and adults returning to complete high school, and much more.”

Higher education begins in high school with the wide range of opportunities and resources MHCC offers to help students jump ahead or get back on the path.

The Adult High School Diploma program is designed for students 16 years of age or older who would like to earn a full, 24-credit Oregon diploma while taking high school and/or college courses. (page 29) Expanded Options provides eligible high school students with another opportunity for early entry into postsecondary education. Area school districts sponsor students to take college classes that are not offered at their high school. Students must be authorized by their high school counselor or administrator to enroll in classes each term. (page 29) High School Credit Recovery is designed for high school students who have failed a class or have incomplete classes at their high school and would like to recover the credit. This program is not a diploma completion program. Students must be 21 or under and currently enrolled in high school. Classes are offered year round in the evenings, online and during the day in the summer. (page 28) Middle College allows qualifying Reynolds School District students age 16 or older to attend MHCC as full-time, dual-credit students for at least two years (or longer if needed to complete high school graduation requirements). Students receive tuition for 12 college credits and textbooks each term. This program is available to other area school districts interested

went on to MHCC, where he immersed himself in studying and helping others. He went from being mentored at OLI to being one of the institute’s best mentors at MHCC.

“I still have some problems,” Tescahua says, “but it’s really a miracle I can see at all.”

“High school is the time when you really need to get your act together,” he points out, “and I want to help guide kids so they can take advantage of all the opportunities out there. People did that for me, and now here I am.”

For many months, Clemente Tescahua couldn’t see anything at all, let alone his future. Now it’s all clear.

By the time he was in middle school, he was losing sight of his future. He began to skip school and party hard. A wake-up call came right before his freshman year of high school: Busted by a security guard, Tescahua’s mother came to get him, her eyes full of tears. “Something changed,” he says. “I didn’t want to disappoint my family like that again.”

For someone so young, Clemente Tescahua has had more than his share of life lessons. His family came to the U.S. from Mexico before he was born, and settled in Sandy, Ore. Tescahua was just eight years old when the family

Seeing the Light

Planting the Seed Ask Lorena Dominguez if her goal of becoming a forester and park naturalist and working with kids has a clear beginning, and she’ll answer YESS. Then ask Lorena Dominguez why she dropped out of high school and she will answer, “High school didn’t work with my schedule.” That schedule included responsibility for the care of her siblings. But she wasn’t dropping out of education—she knew she needed to keep moving forward. She just needed a different option. She found it in Project YESS and MHCC. “It was really good for me,” the MHCC freshman says today. “They worked around my schedule and helped me with everything I needed.” Dominguez completed her GED and went on to become the first-ever GED student to receive MHCC’s Future Connect Scholarship. The 2

was driving home on Highway 26 and a drunk driver hit them head on. Remarkably, no one was killed, but flying glass cut Tescahua’s eyes, and he lost his eyesight for several months.

Project YESS program, designed to take students to their GED and then on to college and the workforce, was a perfect fit for someone as motivated as Dominguez. “This federally funded education and workforce program for students ages 16 - 21 serves 120 students in the district,” says Rich Duval, MHCC youth workforce manager. “We work with the students to get them their GED, develop their skills, aid in the transition to college or work and bring about measurable increases in their reading and math skills. They find great support in reaching their academic goals while meeting family obligations.” And sometimes, they find their futures, as Dominguez did after she completed two YESS Conservation Crew internships and helped get the Project YESS SquareRoots Farm and Nursery

Now at Portland State University, he is working on a degree in social work and wants to become a high school counselor. He is still very active in the community and a powerful mentor in OLI. “I tell the students I mentor to keep moving forward,” he says, speaking from heartfelt experience. “Don’t let the darkness of your past drag you back.” For more information about MHCC’s OLI program, please visit mhcc.edu/oli.

SEEING THE FOREST Lorena Dominguez, Project YESS started. The program teaches students how to grow healthy foods and native plants. “I fell in love with the outdoors,” she says. “Project YESS is a wonderful way to get a person back on that good track to a career and a life.” For more information on Project YESS, please visit mhcc.edu/yess.

Teen Driver’s Education ODOT Certified DRV4DE $210 Offered through Reynolds High School for teens and young adults with a valid driving permit. Students receive 33 hours of classroom instruction plus six hours behind-the-wheel and six hours of active observation. Students who will be 18 or older before course ends, or who already have a license or obtain it prior to course completion pay an additional $210 at registration. Students attend one three-hour class each week and may choose, each week, to attend either a 3:30–6:30 p.m. Monday session or a 9 a.m.–noon Saturday session. Rx for Progress High school student Destiny Caseri knew she was ready for college, so why wait? As befits her name, Destiny Caseri has big plans. She will be a neurosurgeon one day and, as a junior in high school, she knows that she is just marking time educationally. She realizes that with at least eight years of higher education awaiting her, it is time she put her schooling in high gear. (We will resist the temptation to write something like, “MHCC’s Adult High School Diploma program is just what the doctor ordered.” Oops, too late.) Caseri had heard of programs where high school students could test into college courses and work toward both their high school and college degrees. She called MHCC and discovered its program for students 16 years of age or older who would like to earn their high school diploma while taking

It gives me great opportunities and opens the door to college. To anyone who is eligible for TRIO, I say grasp that opportunity and run with it.” And that is exactly what Boanca is doing. The only caveat was that students without a GED or diploma can’t receive financial aid, so Caseri would have to pay the costs of her courses out-of-pocket. “I knew I was smart enough for college, and I knew that if I worked full-time, I could do it financially,” she says. “So I took advantage of the opportunity.” By the time Caseri reaches 18, she will have earned her high school diploma plus all but a few credits for her associate degree from MHCC— almost two years ahead of schedule.

GETTING A HEAD START Danielle Mund, Middle College

Freeing Up the Future Reynolds High School student Danielle Mund became an MHCC student in a way that’s definitely ‘New School.’ When many of us went to high school, and possibly on to college, there wasn’t much choice about the steps involved. First, finish four years of high school, then go to college and sort of start over from scratch. That’s just how it was a few decades ago.

Back in the Saddle When Tori Stoner graduates from high school this spring after a short detour, she’ll be back on the trail to her goals. R & R New Options Equine Rescue and Rehab in Sandy, Ore., where Tori Stoner works, is all about fresh starts. They rescue, rehabilitate and retrain horses that have been mistreated, abandoned or simply ignored. Stoner didn’t need anything nearly that dramatic after she dropped out of high school, but she did need a workable, effective way to get back on the path to her long-term goals. “I was looking for something to do to restart my education,” Stoner says. “That’s when I found MHCC’s High School Credit Recovery classes. The program is really flexible, and they are always there for me. It’s clear they want students to succeed.”

But this is 2014 at MHCC, and “how it was” is old news. Even though Danielle Mund was still in high school, she was ready to move on to college. She had outstanding grades, a mature outlook—and commitment—for volunteer work that just didn’t mesh with a high school schedule. Then she found MHCC’s Middle College program, and the rest is accelerated history. “Middle College enables qualifying students from Reynolds School District and other participating districts, age 16 and older, to become fully enrolled students at MHCC for no cost to the student,” says Karyn Renehan, MHCC High School Services coordinator. “For students who are ready for college, motivated and mature, this is a great head start.” “It’s basically free college credit for high school students,” Mund agrees. “I can choose my own schedule, which

helps me to use my time wisely and earn my high school credits by taking college classes. When I graduate from high school, I will have already finished about one year of college. I’m really happy I found this program at MHCC.” Born in Baltimore, Md., Mund is planning a return to the East Coast for the continuation of her education. “My goal,” she says, “is to attend college in Vermont and earn a master’s in social work. My dream is to create a school and living environment for educating at-risk adolescents.” Mund is much closer to that dream than she would have been without MHCC’s Middle College. Choice is good. Kaylee Hower knows where she’s going: to MHCC and then on to a career in nursing. And, she knows how she’s going to get there: quickly. “I’m taking my prerequisites for nursing and my high school classes at the same time,” Hower says. “It gives me a lot more freedom as a student—it’s sort of killing two birds with one stone.” “The Expanded Options program is just that,” explains Karyn Renehan, MHCC High School Services coordinator. “It provides eligible high school students with another smart opportunity to get a head

He’s surprised, in fact, that every student doesn’t take advantage of the program. “I think high school students should be advocating full-time for more opportunities like this,” Shields says. “If you want to get your formal

He plans to have his master’s degree just four years after graduating from high school. His goal is to become a high school English teacher—no doubt one who also teaches College Now courses.
