be focused Flying Higher In a pilot program with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), MHCC is providing courses and opportunity for TSA employees. If you fly for business or pleasure, you’re familiar with the TSA and airport security screening. At best, the TSA officers probably don’t register much on your radar, since your focus is likely on getting through the checkpoint, and on to the gate and your final destination. Like most passengers, you may not think about everything that goes into a TSA employee’s career goals and skills. The TSA itself, however, does. Take TSA officer Aimee Chase, for example. She’s working and going to college, with a double major in criminal justice and Arabic. She speaks a few languages, and her career goals include service with the CIA. She’s one of some three dozen TSA employees taking classes in a unique training partnership between the agency and MHCC. “TSA is making a significant investment in giving our officers opportunities to grow,” says Angel Errett, a training specialist with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. “We have been very fortunate to team with MHCC—the college goes above and beyond the call with absolutely top-notch instructors.”
Jason Jones, a police officer, is one of those instructors. “People want to feel safe when they travel,” he says, “and they also want to have their rights respected. It’s a difficult balance. I’m excited and inspired to be part of helping TSA professionals develop and improve their skills as they grow their professional opportunities. This program is the model for what may well be a national initiative, so it’s very rewarding. The TSA people I’ve worked with have really opened my eyes—they are committed to becoming better at what they do, and that’s good for everyone who travels.” MHCC’s Paul Wild, who develops customized training programs for business and industry, notes that this effort required taking the classes on the road. “We teach these classes at Portland International Airport (PDX),” he says, “and we also have a section online. Right now, we are offering three courses designed to build context around homeland security and improve the skills of TSA professionals. And this is a win-win partnership—these TSA-inspired courses add to the offering within MHCC’s Criminal Justice program. Leveraging this strategic training enables MHCC to enhance its services to the entire community.”
Enhancing skills MHCC creates win-win partnership with TSA
So the next time you fly out of PDX, remember that those folks in the blue uniforms do much more than repeat “shoes and belts off; everything out of your pockets” all day long. “This is one example of the good that comes from prepping our employees for achievement—a full-circle success story that benefits both our officers and the traveling public,” says Wild. For more information about MHCC’s customized workforce training programs, please contact Jarrod Hogue, 503-491-7312 or jarrod.hogue@mhcc.edu.

be a beholder The Artist and the Art Artist and MHCC graduate Miles Browne connects multiple influences in his work, and multiple perspectives in the college’s Visual Arts Gallery. It can probably be agreed by just about everyone that the merit of art is in the eye of the beholder. It can also be agreed that all art benefits from a great space in which to do the beholding. The Visual Arts Gallery at MHCC, free and open to the public five days a week, is just such a space. Coordinated by artist Miles Browne, the gallery displays a changing schedule of exhibitions ranging from painting to sculpture, photography to ceramics and more. Single-artist shows alternate with juried group shows, including the annual exhibit of the best work from artists representing regional high schools and displays of work from students in MHCC’s own Visual Arts department.
“The MHCC gallery and the art it displays enable people to communicate in many different ways. Art can be a message, a release, an emotion or simply good fun. Its value to all of us is underappreciated.” “The Visual Arts Gallery at MHCC,” says Janet McIntyre, dean of the Social Science and the Visual and Performing Arts divisions, ”is truly a hidden gem, offering a showcase for 2

professional artists as well as young artists just embarking on their path. Miles Browne, a brilliant painter and graduate of MHCC, has served as our gallery coordinator for the past two years. He brings a unique vision that has elevated each of our exhibitions through his skillful and sensitive handling of the artists’ works.” Browne graduated from MHCC in 2005, and spent additional time taking every MHCC visual arts class he could, and then went on to earn his bachelor’s degree at Pacific Northwest College of Art. A painter and sculptor with many solo shows to his credit, his works mix elements and creatures from nature, juxtaposed with mechanical influences and geometric shapes. His painting, “Gears of Sunset II,” for example, puts rough metallic gears in the sky above the fiery sea at the end of day. “A lot of my work tends to respond to nature, such as animals and landscapes,” he explains. “These geometric designs represent the underlying structures, from plant cells to the systems of the universe. It’s all about one’s perspective.” Recently back from a trip to Haiti to work with young artists, Browne is enthusiastically hanging pieces from local high school age artists when we visit. “This is strong work,” he says. “High school age artists are very advanced, compared to a decade ago when I was in school. Their art is pure and honest. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to curate this show and coordinate the gallery itself. The MHCC gallery and
the art it displays enable people to communicate in many different ways. Art can be a message, a release, an emotion or simply good fun. Its value to all of us is underappreciated. Part of that is allowing the whole idea of art to become too complicated. People should just come and see it and enjoy it—because art without a ‘beholder’ doesn’t really exist.”
SHARING HIS ART Miles Browne’s inertest in art began while studying at MHCC
You can help art exist 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday in the Visual Arts Gallery, located on the east side of the Gresham Campus, 26000 S.E. Stark Street. For a schedule of art shows, please visit mhcc.edu/visualartsgallery.

be a mythbuster Busting Myths, Making Memories Every Saturday, science gets real— and really fun—for a group of youngsters at MHCC. The energy builds quickly in an MHCC science lab on this Saturday afternoon. At first, it’s just Joyce Sherpa, a chemistry instructor at MHCC for the past 18 years, and a few of her current and former students, who volunteer to assist her. This week’s guest, MHCC botany instructor Bill Becker, arrives to lead a nature walk around campus. The chit-chat turns rapidly to why lichens don’t grow on cedar trees (cedar oils are a natural anti-fungal, fyi). Then, by twos and threes, the kids begin to arrive. Before long, the lab is electric with the kidenergy wattage of nearly 40 homeschooled students. This is the Mythbusters class, an allvolunteer effort hosted by MHCC that brings applied, fun-filled science education to home-schooled kids between the ages of 10 and 15. Sherpa started the program in 2009, and a few of the first group of kids have been there for nearly all of the 63 class sessions, which have spanned a delightful range from electricity (making batteries from potatoes), gravity and mass (dropping packaged raw eggs from MHCC’s roof, most of which survived uncracked), actions and opposite reactions
fun SATURDAY science MHCC’s Bill Becker leads kids on a forest exploration
(bottle rockets), inertia (a magician’s table clock trick is involved) and chemistry (making ice cream using liquid nitrogen). It’s a great example of learning disguised as play to engage more kids in science and math. “This is a great way to give kids a new way to see the world and appreciate and understand science,” Sherpa says. “These home-schooled kids don’t get much lab time, which we can provide, and it’s great fun to watch the older kids get involved in helping the younger ones. Over the years we’ve seen the class become more evenly split between boys and girls, which is also very good news for our future. I couldn’t do any of this, though, without my amazing helpers.”
“I really like giving kids a new way to see the world, and maybe that will translate to a serious interest in science.”
Loyal helper Chris Johnsen, one of Sherpa’s former students and a longtime MHCC Mythbusters volunteer,
stands out in his tie-dyed lab coat. “I really like giving kids a new way to see the world,” he says, “and maybe that will translate to a serious interest in science.” Serious isn’t so much the draw for Kyle Brady, one of the Mythbusters kids. It’s more about shooting marshmallows across the room or playing catch with a football that has an egg inside or using seltzer to make rockets. “This is a real fun class,” he says, eager to get started. “I don’t get to do this stuff at home.”

NEVER-A-DULL-MOMENT Rebecca Halley uses her MHCC education at WaferTech
Keeping People and Planet Safe MHCC’s unique Sustainability, Health and Safety program puts graduates on the front lines of environmental responsibility and safety. There are two kinds of positive environmental protection: big picture, wherein the world is altered in grand, global strokes; and day-by-day, wherein committed people and businesses do the best they can in realworld situations. The first is often more glamorous, but the second is where the recycled rubber meets the sustainably paved road. Take, for example, WaferTech, located in Camas, Wash., the largest integrated circuit semiconductor foundry in the U.S. From keeping their workers safe on the job to reducing chemical usage and increasing energy efficiency, WaferTech employs a team of professionals guided by the company’s environment, health and safety policies. Dealing with realworld complexity, regulations and goals, and real-world profit-and-loss, 24

how are they doing? WaferTech has reduced the hazardous waste they produce by half a million pounds per year, recycled some 175 tons of material each year, eliminated hazardous substances from their products, recorded millions of man-hours without a lost-time injury and maintained the wetlands that surround their campus. Rebecca Halley is a safety engineer at WaferTech, and a graduate of the Sustainability, Health and Safety (SHS) program at Mt. Hood Community College. “The SHS program at MHCC ties directly into our core values at WaferTech,” Halley says, “which include providing a safe workplace, minimizing environmental impacts and pollution, and assuring compliance with applicable regulations. The training I received at MHCC gave me a valuable base, plus an understanding of the field and the regulations that enabled me to move on and grow into this varied, never-a-dullmoment profession.”
Javid Mohtasham, Ph.D., directs the Sustainability, Health and Safety program at MHCC, which is one of only two colleges in the Northwest to bring all these elements together in one academic degree. SHS involves three disciplines which often overlap: The environmental technician or manager works with compliance issues and the control of pollution that can create an adverse impact on waterways, air and groundwater. The plant safety officer deals with employee safety and provides a healthy work environment. The hazardous materials manager provides insight on proper handling and transport of materials that are considered toxic or dangerous. “Nearly every company, large and small, needs a professional to ensure environmental, health and safety compliance,” Mohtasham points out, “and to build the programs that make real progress in sustainability for the future.” He adds that job opportunities cover a huge range—a wide variety of employers hire environmental science and safety technicians and managers, including environmental engineering firms, industry, waste disposal or management companies, governmental agencies, analytical laboratories and private trainers or service providers. “Our graduates serve both the community and the environment, with typical starting salaries around $45,000,” notes Mohtasham. MHCC graduate Brian Allen took his SHS training to the environmental compliance and inspection side of the field, and now works for the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality in Bend. Under the auspices of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s
“The training I received at MHCC gave me a valuable base, plus an understanding of the field and the regulations that enabled me to move on and grow into this varied, never-a-dullmoment profession.” Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, Allen inspects facilities for compliance with regulations governing the management of hazardous waste. For a few businesses, the 20-year Navy veteran is the last person they want to see coming. “I was a Navy Chief,” Allen says, “so I can handle inspections. And once a business realizes that I have experience on their side of the fence within industry, the lines of communication open up pretty well. They understand that I’m not only here for an inspection, but to offer technical advice as well. Usually the only regulated businesses that have issues are the few that do not have a trained compliance person on staff.
“This field is as much about communication and problem-solving as it is about the technical side,” says WaferTech’s Halley. “MHCC makes real-world internships available to students in the program—WaferTech provides opportunities for some of those internships—which is so important to the degree.” Other companies, such as Charter Mechanical Contractors, also offer internships. After completing an internship with the company, Natalie Gabrielson, a 2010 graduate of Gresham High School, found herself in the enviable position of having a job offer with a great salary and benefits. And she hasn’t even graduated from MHCC yet! “The decision to enroll in MHCC and the SHS program has been the best decision of my life,” Gabrielson says. “I recommend this program to anyone who wants to keep people safe, the environment clean and practice sustainability.”
“The SHS program at MHCC offers a lot of opportunity and a lot of directions in which to take your career,” Allen says. “The program trains people for roles that are valuable to businesses and the public.” A big part of the SHS training is the exposure students get to industry professionals and work environments.
NATALIE GABRIELSON Students such as Natalie (left) often land good jobs before graduation.
MHCC’s Mohtasham emphasizes, “We bring in several of the field’s top people to speak to our students and serve on our advisory board. Combine that with the transferability of our courses (science, math, general education and more) —and the internship experiences— and you have a valuable, careerready education.” He adds, “There’s a huge future in this field. No matter what happens politically or even economically, sustainability and worker safety issues aren’t going away. It is an ideal career choice for recent high school graduates as well as anyone looking to acquire training for a new profession.” To learn more about MHCC’s SHS program, please visit mhcc.edu/shs.
