Register now for winter term! In 2016, Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC) will mark 50 years of helping more than one million students achieve their dreams. We have also helped many businesses in east Multnomah County by training workers with the skills they need to succeed. We have invited the community to access all that MHCC has to offer– credit and non-credit classes, plays, art shows, concerts, swimming pools, bookstore, library and much more. To chart a course to the year 2020, MHCC is launching a strategic planning initiative, and we need your help. What do you think the college should focus on in the year 2020? What role will the college play in the community? For more information, check out the article on page 1. We welcome your opinion: Find the postcard on page 26 of this publication, fill it out and mail it to MHCC. Another option: Complete a questionnaire at mhcc.edu, available Nov. 11 - Dec. 11. Thank you! This issue of College + Community also includes several feature stories on graduates from MHCC’s Allied Health programs who are now working in their chosen fields. If you are interested in credit courses that will be offered winter term, check out pages 3 - 10. Once you select your courses, go to mhcc.edu/schedule to find course times, locations and instructor names. This magazine also provides descriptions of non-credit courses on pages 12 - 26. A few of the brand new offerings this term are Dancing for Birth; How to Write Great Stories; and How Mushrooms Touch Our Lives. Register now at learn.mhcc.edu.

formulaMHCC for President, success Dr. Debbie Derr
Envisioning 2020 MHCC will launch a strategic planning initiative to chart the college’s future course and meet the learning needs of district residents and employers. We invite you to participate. Mt. Hood Community College opened its doors to East County residents some 46 years ago. Ever since, students from throughout the metro area and beyond have achieved their dreams at MHCC. More than one million people have earned college degrees and trade certificates; transferred to four-year universities and generally enriched their lives at the college’s three campuses. Within the last year, the community elected three new board members representing districts 1, 2 and 4. The board recruited a new president, Dr. Debbie Derr, who hails from this area originally and returned to lead the college through some challenging and exciting times.

With new leadership at the helm, and its milestone fiftieth birthday approaching, MHCC is launching a strategic plan update. The strategic plan is the college’s “big picture” playbook and provides the framework for our collective values and a vision for the next five to seven years. The planning process begins in November and will be completed by March 2014. A task force comprised of employees, students and community members will lead this important initiative. What lies ahead? What new occupations will exist in the year 2020? What educational “tools” will be needed? What cultural offerings will East County value the most? These are just a few of the topics that will be considered as the college
updates its strategic plan and builds a pathway to the future. We invite your participation in this “big think” about the East County gem, MHCC. Please share your thoughts via a questionnaire at mhcc.edu, which will be available Nov. 11–Dec. 11. Or, fill out the postcard included in this issue of College + Community magazine, and send it back to us. Everyone needs a community college at some point in his or her life…now your community college needs you. Please join the conversation. Questions about the strategic plan can be directed to Michelle Gregory, community development director, at michelle.gregory@ mhcc.edu or Linda Vigesaa, chief information officer, at linda.vigesaa@mhcc.edu.

be a helping hand the right touch MHCC Physical Therapist Assistant Graduate, George Andrada
Getting Physical Physical therapist assistant George Andrada couldn’t be happier in a position he didn’t know existed until a few years ago.
Physical therapy was always his plan— George Andrada just got sidelined for awhile. He began his college years as a physical therapy major, but eventually wound up with a psychology degree. He went to work, and soon realized he
MHCC’s Allied Health Programs–Get Started Now on a Great Career Pages 2 and 27–29 provide a snapshot of some of the many graduates of MHCC’s Allied Health programs who are enjoying careers in their chosen profession.
wanted to get back into the world of physical therapy. “By that time,” Andrada says, “I had a family with two kids, so I didn’t want to rack up tons of debt going back to school for four years. Then I discovered the Physical Therapist Assistant program at MHCC. It was a career I didn’t know existed, but it was a two-year degree which worked out great for me.” Andrada sought advice at MHCC on how to best prepare himself for acceptance into the program. “Then I ignored that advice,” he admits. “I figured I’d had plenty of background and observation in physical therapy settings. So of course I didn’t get in on my first try! The next time I listened and did what was suggested.” Physical therapist assistants work directly with patients to restore physical activity following accident or illness.
“The therapist does the first assessment and designs a plan of care,” Andrada explains, “then we provide the day-today treatment. We are free to choose the specific techniques and to progress those patients within that plan of care.” In this very in-demand field, Andrada had no trouble finding a job following his MHCC graduation last spring, and a week after leaving MHCC he began treating patients. “It’s challenging and rewarding,” he says. “Each case, even with the same diagnosis, is always subtly different. It’s like a puzzle, and we put the pieces together for the patient, so he or she can get back to doing what they want to do. MHCC prepared me very well for this profession, with great instructors and real-life experiences.”
These programs include:
All programs offer frequent information sessions that provide specific details about the individual programs, requirements and application process. Anyone is welcome to attend and questions during the sessions are encouraged. Dates and times of the information sessions can be found at mhcc.edu/ alliedhealthinfo. Interested persons are also encouraged to visit with an academic adviser at the Academic Advising Center on the MHCC Gresham Campus or contact them through mhcc.edu/advising.
Dental Hygiene Funeral Service Education Medical Office Programs Mental Health/Human Service Physical Therapist Assistant Respiratory Care Surgical Technology Some programs require special application procedures before a student may register. Graduates of most programs earn an associate degree, however, some programs take only a few months of college and result in a certificate of completion.

be a communicator formula for success MHCC Medical Office Graduate, Susan Baty
Code Talker Not everyone is cut out for the precise work of medical coding, but as Susan Baty discovered at MHCC, she is a perfect fit. Some people are ideally suited to working directly with other people because they love the face-to-face, personal interactions. Susan Baty, however, recognizes that she is not one of those people.
Word of Mouth MHCC’s respected Dental Hygiene program was just what the dentist ordered for Daniel Martinez. He would probably be the first to tell you that he wasn’t a completely normal kid. A good kid, a smart kid, but a bit unusual. Daniel Martinez grew up in the Columbia River Gorge, between Hood River and The Dalles. He was 11 years old before he made his first visit to the dentist. His parents took him for his birthday, of all things. The glaring light, the whining drills, the sharp instruments, the frightening sounds… Martinez reacted like any little kid. Well, maybe not any little kid. He loved it. “I really enjoyed going,” Martinez says today. “I was so intrigued by it all. I never found it scary. And I immediately wanted to become a dental hygienist.”
“I found myself wanting and needing a new career that was enjoyable, fulfilling and paid well,” Baty says. “I did some research and decided that medical coding looked like a perfect job for me.” This is definitely the part of healthcare that they don’t make TV shows about, but everything a physician does is translated into a five-digit code number, so the doctor can bill and the insurance company can pay. There are thousands of these codes—CPT codes for procedures, ICD9 codes for diagnoses. Medical coders read the documentation from the physicians, and then assign the proper codes. “It takes precision and attention to detail,” Baty explains, “and it’s not for people who get bored easily!” She chose to study coding in the Medical Office program at MHCC— and drove 32 miles each way to attend—because it offered a deeper
This was a kid who got totally excited about a new toothbrush. Fast forward a few years and Martinez was researching the many dental hygiene programs around the state. Mt. Hood Community College stood out. “The MHCC program was a great one, with a strong reputation,” he says, “but what really sold me was how responsive they were. They made the communication so easy, I felt at home right away. And I had some awesome teachers—I will always be thankful to MHCC instructor Teri Tong.” Martinez graduated from MHCC in 2012 and found work almost immediately. “Good skills are vital,” Martinez points out, “but patient interaction is just as important. You have to be a chameleon to serve all sorts of different people. You build a personal relationship, a connection, with every patient. You need to
dimension than other programs elsewhere. “What I really liked about the program,” Baty, who now works mainly at home, says, “was that it gave me a strong foundation in all aspects of medical office work, not just the bare bones of coding. I think I’m a better coder because MHCC emphasized communications skills as well as basic pharmacology, medical law and ethics. At the end of the program, I earned a position with Oregon Health & Science University’s professional services coding department. I have been with them for two years, and still love my job. It’s challenging, fun, pays well and keeps me excited to work every day.” The five-digit code for that is h-a-p-p-y. Cutting Edge Surgical technologist Olga Ruban had to hit the ground running when she came to the United States, and she hasn’t slowed down since.
Want a challenge? Move to a new country when you are 15 years old, know nary a word of the language and start high school just days after you arrive. Thanks, Mom and Dad, Olga Ruban remembers thinking. Today, 10 years later, you can hear only the faintest traces of her native Kazakhstan in her effortless English. The 2008 MHCC Surgical Technology graduate is now on the cardiac surgery team at Adventist Medical Center. “My aunt was a doctor; I knew I wanted to go into some medical field,” says Ruban, “and I wanted to 28

serve and support others during one of life’s most fearful and stressful times,” she explains. While living in rural Montana, she researched funeral service programs and found that MHCC has one of the best in the country–including those found at four-year universities. She enrolled at MHCC in 2003 and says, “In MHCC I found a special place where I felt I belonged, with small class sizes, motivated students, accessible faculty and relevant and affordable courses.” After graduating in 2005, she immediately went to work at a local funeral home and was later promoted to general manager of three sites. “Every day, I sit across from bereaved families and I see that their world has just fallen apart. I will not let them down. My promise to these families
“to serve and support others during one of life’s most fearful and stressful times” is that the service to honor their loved one transpires perfectly.” As a way to give to back to the college, she is a volunteer member of the MHCC Foundation Board, which provides scholarships and resources for students so that they may have an opportunity to pursue their passions, achieve their dreams and obtain jobs in the careers they love, just as she did. work hands-on at something that was exciting and challenging. MHCC’s Surgical Technology program sounded cool.” It is that, and it’s also the only accredited Associate of Applied Science degree program of its kind in Oregon. The training, which includes a full year of real-world clinical rotations, combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures and implementation of tools and technologies to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. In other words, when the surgeon says “scalpel,” or “suction,” the surgical tech is the person to whom he or she is speaking. Surg techs (as they are often referred) also help prepare the operating room for each procedure. Ruban now serves as a clinical instructor for MHCC students who

be a life saver preparation pays MHCC Respiratory Therapy Graduate, Roseanna Lee
Live and Breathe What’s a stay-at-home mom to do when her youngest child goes off to school? Roseanna Lee decided to go save other kids’ lives. We don’t think much about breathing—until we can’t. Air in, air out is one of those things that goes from mindlessly mundane to lifeor-death in a hurry. Whether from injury or from disorders including
A Passion for Helping MHCC’s respected program in Mental Health and Human Service offers a huge range of career pathways and graduate Miranda Meng shares the MHHS passion for helping people. Old-school descriptions such as “social work” or “counseling” still apply in 2013 and 2014, of course, but they don’t begin to cover the diversity and scope of careers that begin in MHCC’s Mental Health and Human Service (MHHS) program. Today’s graduates are working with everyone from infants to high school kids to adults to seniors to the elderly at the end of life, and in areas that range from addiction counseling, mental health therapy, community corrections, gerontology, youth counseling and much more. The common element across all these careers is rewarding work that demands both mind and heart.
asthma, emphysema, pneumonia and bronchitis, protecting the airway is job one in healthcare, right alongside maintaining a stable heartbeat. The discipline in allied health responsible for doing that job in a wide range of healthcare settings, from hospital to physician office to home health, is respiratory care. MHCC offers one of the most respected and competitive training programs in the region. Roseanna Lee knew it would not be easy when she applied to MHCC, but with her kids off to school she knew she wanted to do something important. She was accepted into the program, and a rotation in pediatric respiratory care convinced her that helping kids was her passion. She graduated in 2010, and was hired just one month later. “MHCC gave me total and exceptional preparation,” Lee says. “The training was outstanding and I went from a
Some students discover the MHHS program right out of high school, and there are also many returning adult students—most with a lot of life experience, and often a few hard knocks, in their past. Their passion for helping others brings them together on a career pathway with hugely varied options and the opportunity to go right to work after graduation or to bridge to more education. MHHS graduate Miranda Meng took that bridge, going from MHCC to Portland State University, where she recently earned her master’s degree. She is now a mental health therapist at SEAMAR Community Health Center in Vancouver, Wash., where she splits her time between a generalist practice at the center and working in the Clark County schools. “The mental health program at MHCC is priceless,” Meng says, “I’ll use the skills I learned there forever. Although I didn’t know it until I got into my PSU master’s program, the texts we

MHCC was the best decision I ever made.” At Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel, Lee works with premature and other babies who need ventilator support (including a 500gram—1.1 pound—infant she recently intubated). She also works with older kids who need breathing support due to everything from traumatic injury to infectious and genetic diseases. “It can be mentally tough to do this work sometimes,” Lee says, “but it’s always inspiring and challenging. I love my job, and I’m so grateful to my instructors at MHCC for making me a critical thinker.” For more information, please visit mhcc.edu/respiratorycare.
