/01. 0-78: EXPERIENCING ACQUACALDA INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE OF PUMICE QUARRIES LIPARI - ITALY | 2018

MASTER'S DEGREE THESIS PROJECT PROF. STEFANIA VARVARO | PROF. ROSSANA GABAGLIO TEAM: SARA IPAKCHI | DHAARINI RAJKUMAR UNESCO has proposed that the island of Lipari is one of the nodal points of the Aeolian Islands geopark system. The pumice industry is, in fact, one of the distinctive features of Lipari island that fits well into the wider geopark frame designed to enhance the geological, volcanological and naturalistic aspects, the reason for the Unesco inscription in the World Heritage List. Accordingly, the site of Acquacalda - located in the north of Lipari which includes the pumice silos- has been chosen to transform the existing buildings into a post-industrial park and open-air museum. Strategies vary from large-scale interventions like improving the quality of the existing vehicular paths and introducing a network of trekking paths in order to connect the main industrial sites to both, the pumice quarry and the sea. In the meantime, the architectural interventions include a sequence of gardens that have been inserted into the existing silos, which users will experience through a set of pathways at different levels. Lastly, there are several interior architectural interventions that aim to improve the quality of space. This project would, thus, provide an opportunity for users to experience different qualities of spaces while moving from the 0 level beside the sea up to 10

78 meters on top of the quarry in mountains. The project aims at bringing vitality to the northern portion of Lipari and to preserve the industrial heritage of the island by means of adaptive reuse of the existing infrastructure.

PATHWAY

ISOMETRIC VIEW OF DRY/WATER GARDEN DRY GARDEN is aimed to emphasize the effect of EMPTINESS. The second garden is WATER GARDEN which its main role is to emphasize the presence of SKY inside the borders of silo walls. The relation of the pathway system has been indicated by a CORTEN sheet which has been inserted inside the asphalt to mark the narrow entrance.

16

1

THE DRY GARDEN

DRY GARDEN is a contradictory mixture to emphasize the SILOs as a single entity. The absence of any green element will help users to admire the SILOs itself. At the end of the first silo is the very first point that users have the possibility to conceive the sense of being enclosed inside the high walls of the silos. The WOODEN PLATFORM and its minimalistic stone seats are where you find yourself inside the system of pumice industry.

3

THE SUNKEN WALKWAY

DRY GARDEN has two large opening toward the Silo behind which has been called PUMICE GARDEN. Two large openings have been treated as a THRESHOLD, where you can feel the THICKNESS of the wall while you have a visual connection to the PUMICE GARDEN.

4

THE WATER GARDEN

WATER GARDEN is the second silo based on the pathway narrative. Complexity inside this silo is more due to change in the level of the pathway and its rotation around the periphery of the silo to make the users able to see every corner of it. The endpoint of the WATER GARDEN at a few meters above the ground pathway equipped with an extended WOODEN PLATFORM.

ISOMETRIC VIEW OF GREEN/PUMICE GARDEN GREEN GARDEN is aimed to emphasize the vastness of the site and intensify the sense of BEING LOST. The next garden is PUMICE GARDEN which the entire space has been filled up of PUMICE POWDER to help the users experience the pumice directly as well as climbing the inclined walls as a sort of entertaining experience.

18

5 THE MOUNTAIN PLATFORM GREEN GARDEN is the third garden in the sequence of experiences. The pathway lands on a part of the mountains which is inside the silo, and there is a possibility to reach some PLATFORMS that have been inserted inside the mountain. These PLATFORMS provide the possibility to enjoy the atmosphere of GREEN GARDEN.

7

THE PUMICE GARDEN

PUMICE GARDEN is the last garden during the experiential journey which has filled up with PUMICE POWDER that has an extremely soft texture. PUMICE GARDEN let the users gain the first-hand experience of the final product of pumice industry.

6

THE TUNNEL

In the second part of the GREEN GARDEN, there is a sign of skylight that belongs to an UNDERGROUND TUNNEL. The tunnel has the possibility to explore from its entrance inside the exhibition.

8

CLIMBING WALL

Along with the PUMICE GARDEN, there is an inclined wall covered with hundreds of hand holds to provide the opportunity of climbing the wall. By using them users can reach the PANORAMIC PIAZZA of the industry to have a panoramic view of the sea.

MILAN EAST RIVER SOCIAL HOUSING NEW DEVELOPMENT IN PERIPHERY OF THE CITY MILAN - ITALY | 2018

PROF. PAOLO MAZZOLENI TEAM: SARA IPAKCHI | KUSHAL SHAH Eastriver area is located towards the north eastern part of Milan alongside river Martesana. There is a strong division of the city center with its north east due to the railway line bisecting the two parts. The central Railway station is in close proximity of the site. From this pathway one can reach the historical center of the Milanese capital, passing through avant-garde metropolitan neighborhoods and historical buildings of Milan. The project area is located near the waterway and railway lines which both affects the site. This area was a former mechanical workshop which is now abandoned. The buildings which surround the site are mostly residential ones except a factory which is the east neighbor of the site. According to shape of the site the project has two different shapes to be fully integrated to the context. In the south part, volumes are linear and positioned toward the river, providing maximum permeability which has a good integration with the young group of habitats. While in the north part volumes are denser and compact that making a central courtyard with more capability for the aimed habitats which are more families with children. At the same time project followed by Milano country side landscape design which is mainly based on the rows 28

of trees planted with same distance. Meanwhile, on the boarder of the site along the Martesana walkway Lombardy Poplar trees have marked the path. As a result, the whole plot conceived as a unique, continuous landscape which provides different atmosphere when user passes through.

SEATING IN FRONT OF THE SEA DEFINING A THRESHOLD TO THE BEACH LIPARI - ITALY | 2017

PROF. STEFANIA VARVARO | PROF. ROSSANA GABAGLIO TEAM: SARA IPAKCHI | DHAARINI RAJKUMAR Ferlazzo is located on north-east part of Lipari Island. Site contains series of buildings which have constructed on top of each other on one the most steep part of the rocks. The entire system has an entrance through landscape which ends into a small building which is now remains as ruins. The aim of the project is to maintain the existing condition as much as possible in order to convey the atmosphere of the space, while inserting a new safe pathway that led users to explore and understand different spatial qualities of the site. The main theme of design is a linear concrete pathway including one side railing, while at some special points an additional extension lead users to climb up ro down to experience an additional spatial quality. These extensions diffrentiated by using Cor-Ten steel. At the end of the path series of steps help users to reach the beach level while offering several platforms to seat and enjoy the sea. At the same time, using steel grid for the pavements of this part helps users to sea the rocks and sands below and feel the the environment in a better way. In the existing condition there are several beams that

44

may show there was a roof in the past on the last part of the sea threshold. Since these elements are not in a good condition, it suggested to use new Cor-Ten pillars and beams not only to support the structure but also to remind the so-called ceiling.

MONTEROSA SKY-GAZING SLICES OF TYRRHENINAN SKY LIPARI - ITALY | 2016

PROF. STEFANIA VARVARO | PROF. ROSSANA GABAGLIO TEAM: SARA IPAKCHI | DHAARINI RAJKUMAR Monterosa is the most eastern part of the island which is about 200m above the sea level. The Monterosa which is cape of the Lipari island offers a unique view toward the sea, villages and mountains. It has to hill top which one of them is dominated by an old christian church. The second one which hosts Monterosa Sky-Gazing site is an isolated site which is accessible only on foot. Sky-Gazing is an Intersection of three linear volumes which have carved into curve slices that offers a portion of sky to the users. Each end points of paths suggests a special view toward city, sea or mountains. This would be an opportunity for nature lovers and hikers to explore the beauty of Lipari island. In the masterplan we have developed a trekking path from the sea level and beside the main road which brings hikers up-hill, let them experience sky-gazing and then continue their way to visit Santa Croce Church. Also they have this option to stay in a cottage that is located between these two sites. End of the paths there is a down-hill path that let hikers reach a panoramic lookout. Inclination of the walls and several intersections provide a maze like atmosphere which led the user to explore and reach nodes and viewpoints. 54

Building tend to be simplistic from the outside and more form oriented from the inside. Walls lead the users to lean on or bend to move inside at some points. This dynamic of movement increase the sense of exploration.

XI'AN FOOD MARKET

ADDING A NEW LAYER TO A HISTORICAL SITE XI'AN - CHINA | 2016

PROF. LAURA ANNA PEZZETTI | PROF. SILVIA SBATELLA TEAM: SARA IPAKCHI | QU ZHENG | YIHAO CHEN | LIU PEI YUAN Xi'an is the capital of Shaanxi Province, People's Republic of China. It is a sub-provincial city located in the center of the Guanzhong Plain in Northwestern China. One of the oldest cities in China, Xi'an is the oldest of the Four Great Ancient Capitals, having held the position under several of the most important dynasties in Chinese history, including Western Zhou, Qin, Western Han, Sui, and Tang. Xi'an is the starting point of the Silk Road and home to the Terracotta Army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. XI'AN food market is located at the south-east corner of old city. Currently, the site includes an old brick building which people mainly use its ground floor. The building contains a unique concrete grid structure. The main theme of design is to save this grid and try reuse it in order to define spaces. Design is made up of a single volume which resembles a Snake that penetrates the grid and shapes two voids. Voids are connected vertically to the roof and brings light to the ground floor restaurants and food market. Snake is a food workshop. It contains different stages of making food from planting vegetables, storing them, cooking and serving. All this stages happens inside or on its rooftop. Moreover, snake has several classes, and two lecture 62

halls, book store and a permanent exhibition of food history of XI'AN. On the periphery of the site Snake continues to define a courtyard in front of the food market building.

URBAN TOWN HOUSE

HIGH-GARDENS IN PERIPHERY OF CITY MILAN - ITALY | 2017 PROF. PAOLO MAZZOLENI PERSONAL PROJECT Milan architecture has a shift in terms of architectural design when you go out of the first ring of the city. Townhouse design site is located near Milano Rovereto Metro station. Site plot is a long and linear space with 8m width and 41m length. Project client assumed to be an artist which wants to transform his own house to gallery while he can live and rest simultaneously. Since the whole building has a narrow entrance and opening to the street, the main challenge of design is creating a sequence of open and enclosed spaces inside the building. Hence, there are three elevated interior geen space which let users to have their own decent openings to a private garden. Building made out of structural side walls that bear the loads. A thick slab of 80cm height hosts four trees to provide interior gardens. on the ground floor the entrance to the underground gallery shaped by a long ramp that let users explore the artworks inside the gallery. The whole system of house based on two separated living units for parents and childrens and a shared living unit.

76

Moreover there is an office unit on ground level which has dominant position to manage the gallery. At the same time an elevator connects the ground floor to the High-Gardens. The parent's unit has its own entrance which let the owner to be more comfortable.

MIAW WORKSHOP to build in (and with) time PROF. PAULO DAVID MILANO - ITALY | 2018

The reflection on the Scuderie De Montel started in the place itself, while understanding its physical transformation with respect to the extended urban context. After visiting the site area, we recognised that the main issue is related to the Scuderie being a ruin as part of a discontinuous and uncharacterised urban context, rather than a singular building. Can memory be a tool to assimilate the past and to help a critical position in the present, according to possible future scenarios? Taking Gonรงalo Byrne's thought as a reference, the city can be considered as a container for life and must be open to transformation, making ordinary life happen. The project's process is approached through four structural topics: Limits, Time, Scale and Program, which are reflecting the crucial directives for understanding the place and making questions about it. Limits | The limits of the area are complex, since they exist but they are not clear. The periphery, as a result of the fragmented city - in therms of scale and program - is scattered and its boundaries become almost imperceptible.

86

Time | Determining contingencies in the present, by internalising the past and speculating about a possible future. Fostering a reflection that takes into account the weight of memory as a urban, architectural and programmatic contingency. Scale | Making a reflection on the surrounding's scale addresses the strategy of intervention. Scuderie De Montel's building is part of an extended urban system - including sport, leisure and transport infrastructures. The most significant of them are: San Siro Stadium, the Hippodromes, the metro line and the streets, as well as some urban parks (Parco Aldo Aniasi, Parco delle Cave, Monte Stella). Program | Considering the complexity of San Siro area and its lack of recognisation as a place, it can be a starting point for an extended urban intervention on public space.

87

Scuderie During Time

1930 Project Area Scuderie de Montel and all the system for horse riding is already existing and is strongly connotating the whole area. The context is mainly agricultural; a green public facility existing is Piazzale dello Sport.

1946 Project Area Sixteen years later the Stadium San Siro is built close to the area, next to the Ippodromo trotto.

1956 Project Area The agricultural context is then becoming more and more residential and infrastructured.

1990 Project Area The context is higly built now, mainly residential. A part of the park of the Scuderie is then used to built a Residential complex and hippodromes, horse facilities is becoming more fragmented.

Persian Architecture is a complex mixture of geometry, mathematics and indigenous materials which is mainly the soil. During more than 2500 years it has been developed from a prototype until the most complex version which is Sheikh Lotf'o'llah Mosque. One of my passions is to try depicting mystery of monuments all around the world during my trips.
