DON’T LET LIMITED ACCESS LIMIT YOUR OPTIONS

The current rate of new home construction in the UK cannot keep pace with inner-city population growth; not only are not enough houses being built, but space restrictions in inner cities also prevent new developments. A new home built today would have to last 1000 years at current replacement rates. Without new housing, people in the UK will have to make the most of the existing housing stock.

How can homeowners in cramped, urban housing get in on the Outdoor Living trend?

A simple solution offered by Azpects Ltd is EASYClickBase, a synthetic sub-base that significantly reduces the traditional ‘dig-out’ part of the installation process for patios, paths, and driveways. Early feedback shows that for a 50m2 patio EASYClickBase requires an excavation of around 2-4 tonnes and just 2-5 tonnes of a fine replacement aggregate depending on site conditions. Traditionally, this would require the excavation of 16 tonnes of waste by-products, and the import of 16-20 tonnes of traditional subbase aggregates, requiring either heavy machinery or a significant amount of labour.

Several early adopters of EASYClickBase have reported trimming day’s labour off the expected completion time while giving their clients the garden they have always wanted.

EASYClickBase is lightweight and easy to carry, making it easy to install even with restricted access. The reduced dig out makes wastage less of an issue for tight streets that lack space for a large skip, as smaller skip bags can be removed by a flatbed vehicle instead.

Manufactured from 100% recycled ABS plastic, any offcuts of EASYClickBase tiles can be recycled again, further reducing waste and improving the sustainability of hard landscaping projects.

If lockdown taught us anything, it is how important outdoor spaces are for our physical and mental wellbeing. With a significant percentage of the UK workforce expecting to continue to work from home at least part-time, it seems likely that investment in hard landscaping will only continue.

POINTING / GROUTING / JOINTING EXTERNAL PORCELAIN TILE PAVING

The key to the successful jointing of external porcelain paving is to use an equally high-performance jointing material, and one which is easy to apply and to remove and clean residual jointing material from the porcelain surfaces. Traditionally, cement-based tile grouts are used for porcelain tiles on internal walls and floors which is fine, but for external porcelain paving, these cement and so-called ‘hybrid’ (means cement with a bit of polymer added), tile grouts are sufficiently durable for long term external exposure to weathering - Great inside, but not outside. There is also the issue when outside exposed to direct sun, that dense, impermeable products such as porcelain, have limited adhesion to cement mortars, and so shrinkage cracking and debonding due to normal thermal movement is highly likely in the joints – the last place you want to see cracks is in your porcelain paving.

Cement-based pointing products today are polymer modified to counteract cement shrinkage, but this makes them very sensitive to any residual water in the joints that will negate any claimed low shrinkage figures on the product data sheets (an old concrete technology joke – lab-crete versus site-crete), this concern, together with the limited adhesion to dense porcelain, and the fact that these problems are more likely in smaller joints, such as the typical 3-6mm for porcelain, this is obviously a concern. Cement products are also difficult to remove from porcelain surfaces after finishing, usually involving additional cleaning and treatments to remove the ‘cementhaze’.

The best solution for porcelain paving jointing is not an internal tile grout, but a high performance, 2-part, epoxy resin bound, graded fine alluvial sand based jointing system.

The right product for the job depends on the type of stone, the size of the paving and the dimensions of the joints. i.e. 2-part, epoxy resin based, GftK vdw 815+ or GftK vdw 850+, for joint widths from >3mm, or >5mm respectively, which are undoubtedly the best products we have seen for durable external porcelain tile jointing / pointing. This materials technology, and these specific high-performance paving jointing products are designed to be extremely durable and resistant for the long-term, just like external porcelain tile paving.

Porcelain needs non-permeable pointing, unless on a permeable

bed… This is a widespread myth, possibly originally perpetrated because in most of the original / traditional porcelain paving countries, which lie around the Mediterranean, porcelain paving is jointed / grouted with impermeable, cement-based tile grouts that will retain their appearance for years into the future – in these climates. However, this is the UK, our green and pleasant land, where the climate, gardens and building standards are very different. Patios, terraces, and any other outdoor areas of tiled paving, in both domestic and commercial premises will tend to become green, stained or discoloured far more quickly, and will require jet wash cleaning, even porcelain!

The suggestion that porcelain tile grouts must be non-permeable when laid on full concrete beds rather than consolidated granite chippings as prevails in Italy and around the Mediterranean, is also a bit of a ‘red herring’. The UK’s only fully independent source of paving information, including information on use of external porcelain paving explained this in some detail in an excellent article https://www.pavingexpert.com/ faq_permeable_mortars_01

Therefore, this myth is also untrue. Like all external paving in the UK, the porcelain tiles should be laid to recognised falls, ensuring water run-off away from property and / or into adequate surface drainage provided. The now established UK method of laying porcelain with a bonding slurry (usually SBR) on the backside, and placing directly into a full wet mortar bed, also prevents any possible theoretical water underflow and frost delamination. In any event, there is absolutely no evidence of any such sub-surface, freeze-thaw damage to any paved surfaces anywhere throughout most of the UK. NCC Streetscape is the UK’s exclusive agent and distributor of GftK’s vdw 2-part epoxy mortars (they are wet-slurry applied and are not so-called ‘brush in’s) are now used extensively as the pointing / jointing mortar with porcelain paving throughout the UK. This proven UK track record now extends beyond 7 years, which is significant given the very recent growth in porcelain paving, and in our opinion also, there is no issue in the UK using permeable jointing mortars on relatively impermeable bases. Permeability is also a question of degree, as both bedding mortars and/or concrete bases are also always permeable to some extent. This is especially true using a typical 5 or 6-1 bedding mix.

CHARACTERFUL PENNANT SANDSTONE

Outdoor space took on a whole new meaning recently, when we were all asked to work from home if we could. Landscapers leapt at the opportunity to provide many of us with a dramatic new look for that previously ignored space that suddenly we had so much time to study. Seating areas, patios, water features, firepits all started popping up, and it would appear even now, that the whole country is still just as keen - to keep up that momentum.

The characterful pennant sandstone, robust in its nature but diverse in its application from drystone walling, to building and paving stone, has been a very popular choice with both the client and the landscaper. Pennant Sandstone, available from Birch Hill Quarry in the Forest of Dean has a multitude of uses. Most recently the quarry has begun producing a coursed building stone, sawn top and bottom, cropped and then tumbled through a huge rolling drum to smooth the edges, making the building stone easy to lay and quick to form a uniform walling. In contrast the ‘random cropped’ walling produces a more natural, rugged finish, a wellliked product especially when mixed with a sawn coping to create that striking contrast, yet by using the same pennant sandstone complimenting.

MODULAR PAVING FOR CHANGE

The pandemic has heralded a fundamental rethink about our public realm, showing that a fresh approach is needed to designing the spaces between buildings with multifunctional and long-life but adaptable solutions, ready to meet climate change and other developing requirements – as the trade association Interpave explains.

Apart from temporary measures for social distancing, the pandemic accelerated implementation of issues raised in the past but put on the back-burner. They include ‘active travel’ (walking, cycling and the ’15-minute neighbourhood’), ‘low traffic neighbourhoods’ (reflecting previously adopted home zones) and reinvention of the high street (responding to the growth in on-line shopping).

However, a range of wider concerns centred on climate change also need to be addressed in an integrated approach, such as flooding, watercourse pollutants, carbon reduction, air pollution and urban overheating. Measures to deal with these issues are now being implemented by local authorities through planning policies.

Replacing Temporary Measures

During the pandemic, local authorities acted quickly with temporary measures for cyclists and social-distancing pedestrians, manifested with a sea of cones, barriers, road-closures and surface planters. Inevitably, these measures were far from ideal and many have proved unpopular. Hurriedlywidened footways with upstand kerbs running along the centre are just one example. Now, a more flexible approach is anticipated with permanent but adaptable paving solutions, applicable both to regeneration and new developments. Adopting the principles of ‘modern methods of construction’, factoryproduced modular concrete paving offers a solution, delivering fast, lowcost installation, including limitedintervention retrofits. Importantly, layouts can easily be altered and modular concrete paving taken up and re-used to meet changing demands, while meeting ‘circular’ economy’ criteria. This principle generally applies to all precast concrete block and flag products. Distinct, modular units and designed variations in colour, texture and shape can break up areas giving visual interest and a human scale not possible with monotonous, formless materials. So, modular concrete paving delivers a unique combination of predictability, safety and accessibility for all, with scope for endless variety in shape, scale, colour and texture to enrich the urban environment creating real ‘places for people’.

Urban flooding from rainwater runoff and surcharging sewers is a growing problem with climate change. In response, concrete block permeable paving is becoming far more widespread as a uniquely flexible sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) technique. It provides an inherent drainage system with no additional land take for water storage, treatment or conveyance, and eliminates pipework, gulleys and manholes – therefore costing less than conventional drainage and paving.

Essentially, this technology shares the same impressive performance as conventional modular concrete paving products, being slip resistant, durable, strong and sustainable. The difference with permeable paving is enlarged joints, filled with a permeable aggregate, and the materials used below the blocks, which are specifically selected to accommodate water without clogging. Concrete block permeable paving is unlike – and not to be confused with –permeable materials, which behave very differently.

Gradual Supply of Clean Water

But there is more to permeable paving than just flood protection. Over decades of successful use, the technology has demonstrated a wide range of other benefits and multifunctionality. Concrete block permeable paving offers a real opportunity to trap vehicle pollution from water runoff and offers designers the exciting potential of a gradual supply of treated water that can be integrated with landscape design to promote biodiversity.

It also provides clean water at the head of the ‘SuDS management train’ enabling safe, open SuDS features on the surface, downstream. Concrete block permeable paving can be laid level – and still avoid puddles and potholes – or adapt to slopes. It provides a safe, firm surface for everyone, including wheelchair users and people pushing prams, unlike gravel and other loose materials. It is also the preferred option around trees, rather than tree grilles, according to BS8300-1 (2018).

Sustainable Regeneration

One important innovation, particularly for regeneration, is the retrofitting of permeable paving as an overlay, making new use of existing, conventional road bases or other hard surfaces below and their embedded carbon. These lowintervention, thin overlays create attractive, safe and sustainable shared-surfaces. They can be particularly effective when used to supply a gradual flow of clean water horizontally into raingardens, bioretention areas or tree pits, nurturing trees and other green infrastructure. Green infrastructure will be a major influence on the public realm in future, with ever more investment in urban tree planting announced by national and local government, supported by policies at all levels. For example, the July 2021 ‘National Planning Policy Framework’ states that: ‘Planning policies and decisions should ensure that new streets are tree-lined and that opportunities are taken to incorporate trees elsewhere in developments’.

Permeable Paving and Trees in Harmony

However, measures need to be put in place to nurture and allow trees to mature, generally for decades, enabling them to actually deliver their real potential – including net carbon storage, urban cooling through shading and evapotranspiration, biodiversity and public wellbeing. So, the NPPF also requires that: ‘appropriate measures are in place to secure the long-term maintenance of newly-planted trees, and that existing trees are retained wherever possible’.

Local planning authorities will now need to incorporate long-term tree maintenance measures in their planning consents. Here, permeable paving, providing irrigation and essential air supply (with CO2 release) to growing tree roots, so avoiding surface damage by roots, offers a straightforward spatial solution. Although urban trees and paving have traditionally been seen as in conflict, this is not the case with concrete block permeable paving which works in harmony with green infrastructure.

A SAFE FUTURE

As we begin the new year it is certainly not new news that the UK faces a continued and significant threat from international terrorism. There have of course been well published attacks against protected sights across the globe however crowded places remain an easy target. Accessible and readily available crowded street scenes remain an attractive prospect for serious disruption to society and loss of life.

Last year the government set out a proposal, a new Protect Duty, that it is to be a legal requirement for public places to ensure preparedness for future terrorist attacks. The commitment is to improve the safety and security of public spaces and venues. These proposals have been ignited by victims’ groups such as the Martyn’s law campaign established by Figen Murray, whose son tragically died in the Manchester arena attack that took place in 2017.

Home Secretary Priti Patel said: I have heard first hand from those who have sadly lost loved ones in horrific terror attacks, and thank them for their tireless work to ensure others do not share their tragedy. This Government has already taken significant steps to amend our powers and strengthen the tools for dealing with the developing terrorist threats we face, and we will always take the strongest possible action to protect our national security.

That is why we want all organisations responsible for public venues and spaces to put public safety and security first.

It is imperative that both the Government and businesses work together to ensure the safety and confidence of the public when visiting accessible spaces, shopping centres and venues.

Crowded places include shopping centres, sports stadia, bars, pubs and restaurants. When considering appropriate protection against terrorist attacks, city planners and designers need to apply urban design principles that have been tried and tested alongside new technologies and design. It is important to avoid allowing our townscapes to become standardised and fortified, we must retain all the features that allow our communal spaces to be attractive. We need our cityscapes to be safe and secured as well as tailored to local people and the special features of their areas. Each area may need to feature invisibly integrated components, such as bus shelters, lamps, planters, cycle stands and benches, alongside some purpose designed public art or sculptural pieces. The physical measures necessary to prevent Hostile Vehicle Mitigation HVM should not really diminish the look and feel of an open area, it must still be welcoming and attractive if our towns are to survive.

Good urban design is essential, it creates a place of inclusivity that people want to use, well designed spaces have both character and identity, they have clear access for the public, ease of movement is of course important alongside a clear distinctiveness that can adapt to life.

Planning and planting can create such spaces, both making our concrete areas safer and healthier. A city with well-planned and wellmanaged infrastructure becomes instantly more resilient and in turn so do we.

Communal spaces are vital for everyone, we all feel the benefit. They should be easily accessible, and allow us to meet within our communities in a safe environment. A beautifully designed landscape combined with clever street furniture design offers not only a great use of space but creates the opportunity to add a safety layer often missing in traditional city design. Knowing we are safe can improve morale and productivity of city workers through psychological benefits.

Bailey Furniture Group have designed INSPIRA PROTECT a modular planting system featuring a reinforced structure designed particularly for Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) offering both security & protection to pedestrians and infrastructure without compromising on the aesthetic value of our spaces. Each reinforced structure is IWA 14-1:2013 rated and provides a reinforced housing to obstruct hostile vehicle attacks. The planters start at W:1000 x L:1500 x H:450mm but can be scaled up where required, the range enables a modular design and can complement the Inspira range. Each module is available in a range of finishes and has minimal maintenance.

Inspira is a modular planting system that features a reinforced structure that can stop a 2.5 tonne vehicle travelling at 30mph, it is a discreet public safety measure that provides both planting benefits with a reinforced safety structure. The modular system can provide many crucial features and traffic calming. They can be used to expand our pedestrian areas and also border parks and open spaces in an attractive and effective way. Bailey Street Furniture Group offers a combination of innovative design, clever solutions and smart technologies for all our urban needs. Bailey Street Furniture Group believes that investing in well designed sustainable urban spaces is vitally important, our immediate surroundings and environment benefit our quality of life and promote a safer future that we all so depend upon. INCORPORATING TREES

INTO URBAN DESIGNS

From filtering urban pollutants that aid the offset of carbon emissions, to improving individuals’ mental and physical wellbeing, the installation of living trees as part of urban environments continues to be extremely popular.

Here Chris George, Business Development Manager at Howe Green, explores the key considerations that landscaping professionals should address at the initial design stages to ensure the highest standards of safety, functionality and aesthetics.

When planting trees or saplings into urban environments, ensuring adequate root management, achieving regular access to water and maintaining the soil condition must be considered at the very beginning of a project.

One of the most cost effective and efficient methods of incorporating living trees into landscaped areas is the installation of external tree pits and tree grilles.

Benefits of tree pits

Featuring impressive structural integrity, stainless steel external covers ensure the tree roots are securely contained within the tree root ball. This removes the opportunity for roots to spread up and across the landscape, eliminating any potential damage to the paved flooring and subsequent trip hazards.

The addition of lifting keys can also provide safe and secure access to the tree root ball for regular maintenance, in addition to concealed entry to any required electrics, valves and pumps, without impacting the overall aesthetic of the scheme.

They also provide long term resistance to rust and corrosion to deliver increased longevity and resilience, whilst also successfully alleviating the potentially negative effects an urban environment can have on a living organism.

From a design perspective, tree pits and tree grilles can also remove the requirement for slither cuts of stone, which often leads to recurrent and costly breakages.

In practice

The entrances to Heathrow Terminal 5 Departures and Arrivals Halls are framed by a series of trees installed in a linear formation across the hard landscaped exterior.

The brief required a series of tree pits and tree grilles that featured uplighters, whilst also offering easy maintenance, without the need to close the area to passengers to minimise any potential disruption.

To fulfil these requirements, up to 30 of Howe Green’s 7500 Series Tree Pits and Tree Grilles in stainless steel were specified to provide the highest standards in functionality and aesthetics.

For further information on Howe Green’s complete range of tree pit covers and tree grilles, visit www.howegreen.com or call 01920 463230

EVEREDGE PLANTERS

In 2018 EverEdge were tasked to supply plastic powder coated steel planters for the redevelopment of two Grade II listed Regency Villas. The Villas are being developed for Pegasus Life to provide 50 apartments. Glen Howells Architects have designed the project to fit in seamlessly into the distinguished streets of Montpellier, Cheltenham.

Sky Garden, the contractor on this project, came to EverEdge to provide the steel planters. The planters are 900mm tall and have been designed to fit between existing structures on the roof of the building. The planters are filled with a mixture of void former, grit, bark and 300mm of topsoil. Because of the size of the planters, they are braced for strength and to prevent the steel from bowing.

The planters are made from durable steel for longevity and finished in a light grey powder coat which matches beautifully the building. All the planters have an internal jointing system which was a requirement on this project to give them a near seamless appearance.

EverEdge Planters are available in virtually any design, shape and size and in a range of finishes making them the perfect addition to any project.

RIGHT UP YOUR STREET

The Euroflor Urban Flower seed mixes have been delivering beautiful flower displays from Cornwall in the south to Moray in the North and all points east and west.

Increasing number of metropolitan and parish councils, country estates, golf courses, holiday parks, all benefit from these vibrant displays that enrich our sensory environment and also serve as an invaluable habitat for pollinators.

Euroflor urban flower seeds such as Ground Cover, Honey and Poppies, draw, their inspiration from enhancing the environment combined with maintenance cost savings for roadside verge management. Another low growing mix Euroflor’s Boulevard, combines native and naturalised, predominantly perennial species with minimal maintenance, in that it can reduce mowing to just one cut per year.

On the verge

Although highways, roadside grass verges and roundabouts are deemed non-productive land with little or no amenity value the visual, environmental and economic impact of their management continues to attract a high level of awareness and scrutiny. Mowing is a costly exercise and whilst budgetary pressures have reduced the extent of verge cutting in some regions, investment in road building infrastructure has increased the roadside verge footprint in others.

Mowing grass verge strips and splays is an essential operation for traffic safety, ensuring site lines are unimpeded and excessive growth does not obstruct the carriageway. Long-established verges seeded with tall agricultural grasses and colonised by weeds over the decades, present significant challenges.

Cost v’s benefit

Euroflor Boulevard is a practical and cost-saving choice for renewing these types of verges and for creating new ones; balancing the safety and convenience of road users, reducing or replacing the associated costs of grass mowing 2-5 times per annum, roadside warning cones, 2-5, machines, fuel and labour and the inherent safety issues. A wide rang of Euroflor Urban flower mixes can be sown in the spring at rates as low as 3g per square metre.

Supplied in 1kg packs will provide coverage of up to 333 square metres, These low sowing rates and low maintenance requirements are significant when compared to installing annual bedding schemes and maintaining grass lawns.

Waterscape specialists offering comprehensive design, renovation and construction services for a wide range of water related projects in commercial and domestic settings.

CONSERVATION LAKE, PRIVATE CLIENT

In the heart of rural Suffolk, Miles Water Engineering transformed a featureless fiveacre field into a naturally emerging landform, lake and conservation meadow.

The two-acre lake was achieved by creating gently flowing outlines that blended effortlessly into the existing landscape. It has its own private island with space for camping and picnicing, all of which can be accessed by boat from a new jetty on the lake shore. To the north shore we formed a plateau area to provide a large outdoor space to host social gatherings and parties.

The introduction of new ecological features, such as reed beds, marginal planting, as well as native shrub and tree planting, created distinct wildlife habitats that linked and reinforce existing migration corridors.

All materials created from the construction of the lake were re-utilised on site to form the banks or other landform features resulting in a cost effective and enviromentally friendly solution.

REDEXIM MULTI-SEEDER

DELIVERS SEED AND SIGNIFICANT TIME-SAVINGS FOR EYEMOUTH GC

Head Greenkeeper at Eyemouth Golf Club Keith Burgon has praised the Redexim Multi-Seeder for transforming overseeding operations at the Scottish club. Where previously, overseeding the 18 greens would have taken the team of three more than a day to complete, with the Multi-Seeder the task takes just a matter of hours – not just resulting in major labour savings but improvements in germination too!

Eyemouth GC is a clifftop/links course perched on the top of Gunsgreen Hill in the Scottish Borders. Their exposed coastal location means that when it comes to seed, it’s salt-tolerant Fescues required for the greens - however without a seeder at their disposal, overseeding was limited by resources to an annual operation. “We would aerate, then broadcast the seed with a spreader, then have to manually brush the seed in and topdress which was all hugely time consuming” explains Keith, who has been at the club for seven years.

“I have used the Multi-Seeder before and have seen first-hand the fantastic results it achieves at other clubs. After speaking to Ian Lauder from Redexim, we had one in on demo from our local dealer Hendersons, so that we could check it would suit our course conditions. We had the opportunity to try it on a couple of our greens and tees, and the whole team were immediately impressed by the minimal disruption it left and the great germination that followed.”

Since taking delivery of the 1.2m wide Multi-Seeder 1200 in September 2021, it has already helped to deliver important fescues into some of the courses most exposed greens. “The twin sarel roller set-up is creating double the holes, so double the opportunity for getting seed into the ground. This undoubtedly helped us to see good germination, despite us not getting out with it until late November. The fact it is equipped with two brushes also means that an additional member of staff isn’t required to follow the Multi-Seeder round. What was previously a three-man job, is now complete in one pass.”

Keith adds, “With the growth in golf, it’s more important than ever to be able to get jobs such as overseeding done as quickly and effectively as possible. Now that we have the Multi-Seeder, not only can we overseed more frequently throughout the year to boost course condition, the clean finish means we can complete the operation prior to play commencing, and the golfers will barely notice anything has been done!”

PROVEN BROWN PATCH TOLERANCE OF DLF’S 4TURF®

FORMS BASIS OF BRAND NEW MIXTURE FOR 2022

In response to the increase in reported instances of Brown Patch in the UK football industry, DLF have undertaken a screening programme for the last two years to analyse the tolerance of different varieties. The results of the trial highlighted the strong tolerance of certain DLF diploid varieties together with 4turf®, which now forms the basis of a J Premier 4Turf – a brand-new Johnsons Sports Seed mixture launching in 2022. Brown patch is a turfgrass foliar disease caused by the fungus Rhizoctonia spp. All cool-season turf grasses are susceptible to potential attack by the fungus, however it has been found to be most detrimental to bent grass, ryegrasses, annual meadow grass and some fescue species. Attacks are often triggered by hot, humid conditions with an increase in cases identified on plants that are moist and/or have been over-stimulated with nitrogen-based fertilisers. Samples of a particularly violent European strain of Brown Patch were harvested from a football environment and were studied at the MariboHilleshög Research AB laboratory in Landskrona, Sweden – specialists in Rhizoctonia fungi. More than 30 perennial ryegrass varieties – including nine 4turf® tetraploid perennial ryegrasses – were inoculated, with each variety then scored weekly for plant health. DLF were able to determine with

High Tolerance Average Tolerance

confidence, the higher tolerance of the 4turf® varieties to Brown Patch, which correlates with the results seen in other disease trials.

Using the findings from the trials, Johnsons Sports Seed have launched J Premier 4Turf. New for 2022, it is the first mixture of its kind to combine the top-performing perennial ryegrasses from the trial to deliver improved tolerance to Brown Patch, together with the outstanding wear tolerance and visual merit of the original J Premier Pitch mixture. J Premier 4Turf takes full advantage of the most tolerant diploid and tetraploid varieties, with 20% 4turf® – formulated with 10% FABIAN and 10% TETRAGAME.

Following ongoing dialogue with the DLF technical team since early 2019, Head Groundsman at Reading Football Club Chris Last became the first to trial the new J Premier 4Turf mixture. In conjunction with the trial results, the objective was to deliver a mixture with even greater resilience, even faster establishment and improved wear tolerance.

“Having not used 4turf® before, it was interesting to see how well it thrived in our environment!” Chris explains. “We seeded, then sheeted and within just three days the 4turf® was up without the need for excessive levels of input. We were then cutting within a week. As the months progressed, myself and the team at DLF have been avidly observing the sward and how it copes with the issues – particularly disease pressure – at various times of the year. July has always traditionally been a hot-spot for Brown Patch, but last year we saw nothing at all. The additional resilience of the 4turf® has meant that even during high-pressure periods for Fusarium in September and October, any small signs have not turned into full outbreaks. Without question, we have retained far more overall coverage than we have in previous seasons.”

CHESHAM TOWN COUNCIL BLOWN AWAY BY SXG PERFORMANCE

ISEKI UK & Ireland, distributors of ISEKI compact tractors and mowers alongside their local dealer Turney Group based in Oxfordshire, recently sold a SXG326+ to Chesham Town Council.

With six members of staff, Paul Isom manages the Parks and Premises Team at Chesham Town Council, looking after all the open spaces, cemeteries plus extra contract work in the area and recently purchased a SXG326+ to keep the areas in top condition. Commenting on the buying process Paul explains; “After having demonstrations from numerous manufacturers, Josh Walker from local ISEKI dealer Turney Group based in Oxfordshire brought along the SXG326+ mower - it easily outperformed the other machines for cutting and collecting in the wet leaving a brilliant finish every time. There was no question, this would be the second ISEKI SXG mower we would own. We kept the first one for three years with no problem at all and we have had this new SXG326+ mower for over 9 months with no issues.”

Used in various areas of the awardwinning Lowndes Park in Chesham, the SXG326+ on the lowest cutting height keeps formal areas looking pristine all year round, other large areas are cut by a tractor and wide roller mower, then the wildflower meadows are topped and collected by the SXG326+ at the end of each season.

Paul continued; “These SXG326+ mowers did more than we expected, we bought it for our manicured grass but it easily cuts our wildflower meadows leaving a tidy collected finish, plus the 2.2m high tip 600 litre collector means that if needed we can tip into the back of trailers

to move the grass away or tip into hedgerows if we are cutting the wildflower areas.

“The reliability of ISEKI is brilliant, they are solid built machines, it says what it does on the tin, it never breaks down and we’ve not had any issues. The safety features are great, one example is the machine cutting off when you get off the seat. Another feature other mowers don’t have is the ability to mow in reverse, so useful when cutting around trees and benches where you are constantly having to adjust and change directions to make sure none of it is missed, it makes this aspect of mowing so much easier.

“Travelling from site to site is made simple too with its compact size and easy tie down points which is so helpful as we cover numerous sites throughout Chesham each day, from roadside verges to parks and playgrounds, to business premises with outdoor spaces. We take great pride in leaving manicured and striped turf, whether it’s on the verges as you drive into the town or the precious cemeteries and parks. I just think it looks great.

“Based on the four years I have owned ISEKI SXG326+ mowers I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend, in fact I have done so with other local authorities, and they have also gone ahead and purchased an ISEKI. It’s an absolutely fantastic little machine!”

THE ISEKI SF OUTFRONT MOWER RANGE

Renowned for the ultimate cut and collect abilities the ISEKI SF outfront mower range offers a variety of finishes, whether cut and drop, cut and collect, or cut, mulch and drop. All with a choice of rotary or flail decks at varying widths to suit the application, alternatively scarifying blades can be added to certain units to complete other turf maintenance tasks using the same machine. Designed with large capacity Stage V compliant highly efficient engines that run at low revs, producing high torque ensuring the machines are as economical as possible. At the same time this means the working noise from the machine is kept low as the engine is not working so hard to power the machine. Vital for customers when purchasing machinery in noise conscious areas, allowing them to operate closer to buildings whilst not disturbing the residents compared to other products.

For keeping large areas of grass looking pristine ISEKI have the top of the range SF551, a powerful, large capacity centre collect mower which is now also available with a Muthing Flail deck, making it the ultimate combination of quality and reliability. Its large outfront deck and 1300litre high tip collector allows you tackle the thickest of grass whilst collecting and leaving a pristine finish everytime. The ability to cut and collect without blocking, thanks to its turbine driven straight through chute, enables the SF551 to take on whatever the weather throws at it. Should you also wish to scarify those areas of turf and collect all in one pass the blades can easily be swapped in Muthing Flail deck to scarify blades in order to renovate the turf in the autumn.

Perfectly designed for the commercial user looking for a lightweight mower to tow from site to site, economical to run and low initial cost there is the SF224. It’s compact size with deck built underneath the front of the mower allows for effortless manoeuvrability when mowing large parks or gardens that contain lots of obstacles to negotiate. All powered by an economical 22.5 hp diesel engine that is Stage V compliant and does not need complicated emission control devices. This allows the mower to be extremely fuel efficient and only requires simple maintenance. Available with a range of rotary or flail decks, tool carrier or collector. For increased power there is SF237 35hp mower.

CAMPEY MAKES FIVE LANDSCAPING TASKS CO2 EMISSIONS FREE

WITH THE ALLTREC TOOL CARRIER

Campey Turf Care Systems is one of the world’s largest independent sports turf ground care machinery suppliers, distributing innovative sports turf maintenance equipment

Over the years Campey has have earned a reputation for offering practical advice and superb aftercare service. The company is constantly looking for new and innovative products to deliver excellent performance in all areas of grounds and landscaping maintenance.

Mowing, brushing, thermal weed control, leaf blowing and hedge trimming can be done CO2 emissions-free with the AllTrec Tool Carrier is one of the latest additions to the extensive Campey Turf Care Systems range.

The 100% electric machine can work all year round on regular maintenance and uses a universal hooking system that enables operators to easily carry out different activities in one day.

The power produced from the battery means the AllTrec can also be operated using the mower or hedge cutter attachments. The hedge cutting attachment has a 75cm working width with electric motors directly powering the blades which have speeds from 20003000rpm. The deck is controlled using a joystick and is easy to manoeuvre for a comfortable and effective days work. The mowing deck comes in optional cutting widths of 130cm or 180cm with a variable height of cut from 30110mm, making it perfect for use on regularly maintained grass or overgrown vegetation. When cutting with the four-blade 180cm deck, the battery will typically last for 6-8 hours and 7-9 hours using the threeblade 130cm deck.

A large-action radius and highly efficient attachments combined with low operation and maintenance costs make the AllTrec perfect for use in urban environments, sports complexes, holiday resorts and parks by contractors, local authorities and landscapers.

Weed control is an essential task in almost every groundsman, greenkeeper, contractor and landscapers schedule, and the AllTrec with Air E-Variator or Weed Brush has made it quicker, easier and emissions-free.

The E-Variator is one of four attachments currently available for the AllTrec Carrier and it has been specifically designed for weed management on large paved and semi-paved surfaces. It works both preventively and repressively, saving up to 70% of its own energy through re-use – better known as the patented advanced air recycling system.

The unique variable airflow function (ADS) enables the machine to work in corners and around obstacles in just one pass, with operators able to fully control the attachment using the digital control screen. LPG tanks used for the E-Variator Weed Burner can be mounted to the back of the AllTrec, with a connection available for the automatic tank heater to prevent them from freezing. The closed burner system with heat recovery has gas reduction of no less than 60% and an automatic temperature regulation of 380ºC.

Weeds can also be removed using the 70cm Weed Brush, which is electrically powered with three brush speeds and controlled using the onboard joystick. It can be hydraulically adjusted to any angle and used for a full day without any worry of batteries running out. All batteries come with a three-year warranty and have a lifetime of + - 2500 charge discharge cycles. The 48VDC battery uses LifePO4 technology with a capacity of 20kwh or an optional 30kwh, with onboard charging taking 4-8 hours.

Weeds can also be removed using the patented 3D weed brush, which is electrically powered with three brush speeds and controlled using the onboard joystick. It can be hydraulically adjusted to any angle and used for a full day without worrying about batteries running out.

The power produced from the battery means the AllTrec can also be operated using the mower or hedge cutter attachments. The hedge cutting attachment has a 75cm working width with electric motors directly powering the blades, which have speeds from 20003000rpm. The mowing deck comes in optional cutting widths of 130cm or 180cm with a variable height of cut from 30-110mm, making it perfect for use on regularly maintained grass or overgrown vegetation.

In autumn, the powerful leaf blower with adjustable nozzle comes into its own and will soon be joined by the currently in development winter duty package, including a snow plough, salt spreader and winter brush, which will increase the machine’s year-round versatility.

NO WEED OUT OF REACH WITH THE CAMPEY AIR TROLLY PACK

To compliment the Alltrec’s versatility for landscaping and urban maintenance, Campey Turf Care Systems introduced the latest innovation, the AIR Trolly Pack from Dutch manufacturer WeedControl BV, which brings even the hardest to access weeds into reach.

The Honda GX120 motor with compressor powers the LPG/ propane 3x15kw hot-air burner head with an adjustable operating temperature between 190°C – 290°C. The small footprint of the trolley and burner means it can easily access hard to reach areas such as around poles, along walls and road edges, under street furniture and in narrow street passages and alleys where weeds consistently grow. The AIR Trolly Pack is also ideal for inner-city areas and the aftertreatment of larger weed removal projects.

Flame weeding is a very effective and environmentally friendly way to remove weeds against alternative methods such as potentially harmful herbicides. Most annual and some perennial weeds can be eradicated using a flame that essentially explodes the weeds’ cells, turning them into ash. This ash then mixes with the soil or disperses with no harm to other plants while there is no risk of drift onto other areas, which can be common with chemical applications.

WeedControl has explored all health and safety concerns associated with working with a flame during the development of the product. Special attention was paid to the ease of operation to ensure that any user can safely and easily operate the machine. All WeedControl products are made to meet legal requirements when working in public and private areas and impact the environment as little as possible with a focus on sustainability.

The AIR Trolly Pack can be optionally supplied with a hotair bin at the front side. This is equipped with a 3x15kW hot-air burner head. For this, the AIR Trolly Pack is modified at the front side for stability.

For more information or a demonstration of the AIR Trolley Pack, contact Campey Turf Care System: www.campeyturfcare.com

HEADLAND’S EPH TANKMIX HELPS ESSENDON COUNTRY CLUB

EMERGE FROM WINTER DISEASE-FREE

A nutritional programme from Headland Amenity has been praised by the Director of Courses at Essendon Country Club, for helping them get through the autumn and winter of 2021 disease-free. After his appointment in June, Marc Winnan had soil samples taken which highlighted extremely high levels of organic matter – the reduction of which was the key to the plan constructed in conjunction with Headland’s Regional Technical Manager Peter Blackaby.

Marc oversees all elements of greens maintenance across the Hertfordshire estate, which includes two 18-hole golf courses as well as a driving range, practice facilities and the 9-hole Muntjac Academy Course. “Whenever you start a new role, you’ll instantly spot certain problems but it’s also important to identify anything going on deeper in the profile which is why we had both Headland and the STRI take soil samples” explains Marc, who heads up a team of 15. “The high OM levels were a real concern, so we quickly instigated a mechanical and nutritional programme to bring that down, to reduce our susceptibility to disease before the high-pressure period arrived.”

Key to the programme was Headland’s industry-leading 20-20-30+Mantle Enhanced Plant Health (EPH) tank-mix – a combination of Liquid Turf Hardener, Turfite® Elite and Seamac® ProTurf Fe, proven to deliver turf strength and reduce disease activity when applied as part of a preventative planthealth approach. “I’ve used 20-20-30+Mantle previously, but where we would traditionally begin applications at the end of September, we brought this forward to the end of August because of the concerns we had about disease, Fusarium in particular. The 20-20-30+Mantle was complemented with applications of DewCure™ to reduce leaf moisture and this combination, without a doubt, had a massive impact on protecting plant health and saw us get through the whole winter with no disease.”

“In other areas of the course, the goal was to improve the density of the sward via granular feeds. We applied Quickstart® Maxi Plus which gave us great results across the tees, approaches and fairways, and then switched this to Multigreen 15-022 temperature-controlled release fertiliser to see us through the winter months.” Together with the improvements in course condition, Marc has been equally pleased with the support received from the Headland Technical Team every step of the way. He adds, “Because of his greenkeeping background, Peter speaks our language and worked together with us to give us more than just the products we need, ensuring we always had all of the additional data and knowledge to make an informed decision.”
