TRADITIONAL STYLE FEEDER PILLARS
We were asked by Rexel Bootle to quote for 43 Traditional Style Feeder Pillars, all finished in Black & Gold livery for the Princes Boulevard STEP Scheme which is now complete.
This £4m scheme forms part of Liverpool City Region’s Sustainable Transport Enhancement Package (STEP) and focuses on the regeneration of the central reservation along Princes Boulevard and upgrading the carriageway and footpaths along Princes Boulevard and Princes Road.
By installing the 1km long cycle path within the central reservation - a first for Liverpool - the scheme’s aim is to improve cycle connectivity between south Liverpool and the city centre, with the plan to install a new Citybike station along the route.
The new cycle path would also form an extension of a new ‘green corridor’ to Otterspool that is due to be delivered in the next 12 months. The URBAN Green UP project has £3.4m of EU funding to install and test three ‘green corridors’ across the city, which was a key recommendation in the city council’s Strategic Green and Open Spaces Review.
We are really pleased to have been involved with this project. WT Jenkins installed the Feeder Pillars and the images of the completed project are fabulous. We hope the residents of Toxteth and everyone who will be using this innovative link to Liverpool City Centre love it, it certainly looks amazing and we congratulate Liverpool City Council and all who were involved with this scheme.

SUDSPAVE 40 POROUS PAVING INSTALLED FOR ATTENUATION POND AT WAVERLEY GATE
DEVELOPMENT Sudspave 40 installed, filled with soil and seeded to provide service vehicle access to the detention pond
The Waverley project in Rotherham is Yorkshire’s largest ever brownfield mixed-use plan, transforming 740 acres of the former Orgreave coal mining site into a sustainable development that includes up to 3,890 homes, shops, restaurants, a school and leisure and community facilities, including parks and 310-acres of green open space.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/220301094832-2e425d7e06502632e14d419d5a15d4c3/v1/13fbae68f807cabe061b3171d7add393.jpeg?width=720&quality=85%2C50)
Project developer Harworth appointed contractor CR Reynolds to carry out drainage and earthworks for the Waverley Gate area of the scheme, including a striking new attenuation pond. Attenuation ponds are a common feature on residential developments and the design forms part of the overall SuDS plan for managing storm water run-off across this area of the site and reducing downstream flooding. The pond also provides attractive amenity space for the new housing estate’s residents. In order to provide a sustainable and functional vehicle access route for servicing of the pond, ABG’s Sudspave 40 porous paving was specified.

The Sudspave 40 permeable paving has a grassed surface and also provides a safe, green corridor away from the road for pedestrians and cyclists, whilst enabling surface water to infiltrate into the ground. The design proposed by ABG includes Abgrid Geogrid and Terrex NW geotextile which combine to reduce the required DoT Type 3 sub-base thickness, whilst also providing layer separation and bio-filtration of surface water. The pond also utilises ABG’s Claymat clay liner, installed to retain water within the basin. The incorporation of ABG’s permeable paving design provided an attractive, serviceable access route and shallower construction profile, resulting in reductions in site excavation, off-site tipping, stone deliveries and associated costs.

A nationwide approved, accredited supplier and installer of urban green solutions, providing optional soft landscaping, irrigation, aftercare maintenance, with an online shop to cater for smaller projects or DIY.
Ivy Green Screens are supplied
in a variety of species and heights. The Green Screens are pre-planted in a coco pocket and pre-grown on a 5mm galvanised steel frame and come fully established, creating a secure and attractive evergreen or deciduous hedging, with various installation options. An Ivy green screen boundary fence is more sustainable compared to a wood fence. Not only does it last longer than a wooden fence, but Green Screens are also produced in a sustainable way.
Ongoing research shows that the Ivy Green Screens, superior in plant density and construction, help remove PM10 particle pollution, in some sample locations up to 60% of the particles were “cleansed” from the air behind the screens. Research continues to further validate these findings, but increasingly, the installation of Ivy Green Screens offers not only a secure and natural privacy screen and social distancing barrier, but a valuable solution to reduce the negative effects of urban pollution.
Our most popular living wall
is manufactured in England, from 100% recycled materials. This Living Wall product is incredibly versatile and comes in individual troughs that are lightweight, quick, and easy to install with a click and stack method for any configuration. It also benefits from low maintenance and a clever water indicator that tells you when to fill up.
Scientifically proven to filter harmful pollutants
cleaner air and biodiversity, thus providing an abundance of health and wellbeing benefits. Moreover, a nurturing, pollution filtering green space for children, as our installations of green screens in schools, demonstrate.
Integrating more urban greening products into society will contribute to the green recovery, the net zero carbon pledge and air quality now and for future generations. Urban greening is who we are and what we do. Trust your project and reputation to a leading industry expert in urban greening, with an exceptional range of products from renowned UK suppliers.

Linmere Park is an exciting new ‘urban village’ situated on Green Belt land to the North of Houghton Regis near Luton, close to the new J11A of the M1.
The ethos of this new centre for South Befordshire is all about wellbeing, and healthy outdoor living. Over the next fifteen years more than 5,000 homes are planned, along with four new schools: three primary and one secondary. What sets this development apart is the refreshing amount of green space.
The role of ‘design lead’ was awarded to Barton Willmore, one the UK’s leading architectural practices. They worked with Land Improvement Holdings and their partners to deliver a vision to fulfil a need for more sustainable housing, as well as providing a versatile environment centred around core social values, health, and well-being.
To achieve this, over 30% of the entire site has been allocated to open space for sports, recreation, amenity, and the enhancement of biodiversity. This equates to a total of 192 acres (78ha) of green space, as opposed to the traditional 6-acre provision. With tree lined pedestrian and cycle routes linking various parts of the development, the emphasis is on safe access to green space for all members of the community.
Frosts and Green-tech Involvement:
One of the UK’s longest standing landscape contractors, Frosts Landscape Construction was awarded the landscaping and ground works. Much of which involved the ground preparation for the grassed areas as well as planting of several thousand trees and shrubs. To protect the newly planted saplings from wildlife damage and the environment, 500 spiral tree guards were supplied, along with over 6,000 shrub shelters and mesh tree guards.
The last thing any contractor wants when they have planted several thousand trees, is for them to be decimated by the local animal population! Green-tech’s Tubex Shrubshelters help in the early years of planting, offering excellent protection from grazing wildlife, whilst providing a micro-climate within the shelter to aid early growth and healthy establishment. The Shrubshelters also have an integrated tie for quick and easy stake fixing and can be collected and recycled as part of the Tubex recycling scheme.
For the plants that need a bit more room, the Mesh Tree Guard has a 12mm plastic netting with an open structure that allows airflow and more natural climatic conditions, whilst still protecting the young tree from grazing animals.
Having worked with Frosts for over 15 years, Green-tech was delighted to be able to supply all the necessary guards and shelters from stock. We also supplied over 7,000 tree stakes, controlled release fertiliser and Mycorrhiza Rootgrow.

NATURE BASED SOLUTIONS TO REDUCE ENERGY COSTS
For more than 40 years Platipus® has been helping to improve tree canopy coverage in urban areas using its unique tree anchoring and irrigation systems. Apart from giving a beautifully natural aesthetic and having minimal interference with the rootball, these systems ensure that the trees are safe and secure. The benefits of a strong urban tree canopy are well documented, some of the most important include, having significant stormwater retention capacity, helping to reduce pollution through carbon sequestration and various economic benefits.

Did you know that where an entire street is lined with trees, the houses can have their value increased by up to 25%?
With energy prices surging, we need to look at how we can lower our energy bills. When it comes to trees, one of their most useful benefits is their natural ability to provide shade and insulation to reduce energy consumption.
Did you know that the evaporation from a single tree produces the cooling effect of ten standard air conditioners operating 20 hours a day and that this results in a 6 to 8 degree lowering of the surrounding temperatures when compared to areas without trees?
Additionally, tree windbreaks can reduce heating costs by 10 to 15%, whilst the shade and evaporation effect can reduce residential air conditioning by 20 to 25%.

Did you know that unlike other major cities that call themselves cities with gardens, Singapore is considered a city within a garden, that is lush with tropical greenery created through not just on- structure tree planting, using the D-MAN System, but also a variety of living walls?
These walls bring their own fantastic benefits, including the improvement of local biodiversity, helping to purify the air around us, reducing noise levels, adding value to property and just generally improving wellbeing.
![](https://assets.isu.pub/document-structure/220301094832-2e425d7e06502632e14d419d5a15d4c3/v1/cae6221bdabe79608e7076d99c3f28f9.jpeg?width=720&quality=85%2C50)
To make it easier to benefit from this, Platipus developed the first purposebuilt tree anchoring system for roof gardens, urban and shallow planting environments. With nestable, lightweight and compact anchor points, the award winning Platipus D-MAN System has made it easier to plant and anchor trees in almost any situation. This unique solution requires less labour and installation time compared to traditional methods. Costs are also reduced and this, coupled with superior quality, has ensured that tree anchoring remains as safe and easy as possible. This has also encouraged the inclusion of tree planting in urban designs and helps to support landscapers and gardens around the world.

The success of the D-MAN System provided Platipus with the technology to expand their range of Landscape Solutions and to do more to help customers reduce energy costs. From their travels to Singapore and other leaders in urban greening, it became clear that a living wall solution was needed to give customers access to vertical greening. This resulted in the development of the Platipus G-WALL® Modular Living Wall System.
Did you know that living walls can increase the real estate values by up to 20% and significantly improve your workplace productivity and patient recovery times in hospital?
And just like trees, living walls also help to reduce energy costs. Studies have shown that the surface area of a living wall, installed on a building,

is up to 10 degrees cooler ensuring that less heat travels inwards and significantly decreasing the use of air conditioning. The Office of National Statistics (ONS) estimate that approximately £6M was saved on air conditioning costs, in London, simply through a reduction of demand, of up to 30%, on buildings with living walls. These walls also act as layer of insulation during winter, reducing the reliance on heating by up to 12%. These are tangible benefits that offer quantifiable financial savings.
Every area, no matter how small, has some vertical space, be it a wall or other suitable structure, that is perfect for populating with plants. The Platipus G-WALL is an easy to install modular system that will allow even the most inexperienced gardener to transform bare boundaries or spaces into vibrant colourful living walls. The system requires no batons, hanging grids or membranes for installation and its unique integrated jigsaw design allows for easy vertical or horizontal expansion to suit any available space. G-WALL is made from recyclable plastic and has a 25-year design life which means your contribution to reduce energy costs remain effective and vibrant for decades. All Platipus Landscape Solutions are available online through the Platipus Direct website or through a growing network of distributors. They also pride themselves on exceptional service so please get in touch if you need support creating your own amazing urban greening project. They would love to help!

AN INNOVATIVE SUDS SOLUTION FOR FLETTON QUAYS
Situated on the edge of the historic Fens, Peterborough has a rich heritage. Settled by man over 3500 years ago, with a cathedral dating back to AD655, there are plenty of reminders of the past, and recognising this, the City has many listed buildings including the old railway sheds and the 19th Century Whitworth Mill on the banks of the River Nene.
The clay sub-soil in the Fletton area proved perfect for brick making, and this became a major industry in the city - the beginning of the Fletton brick, now widely used across the country. The arrival of the railway in 1845 meant that transportation of the bricks became simpler and Peterborough East Station was built and a goods yard constructed on the south bank of the River Nene to service the city’s expanding business trade. The station closed in 1970 and the land between the railway line and the river was used for various commercial purposes for the next 40 years.
Identifying the potential of this riverside site with amazing views to the Cathedral, Peterborough City Council allocated this area for highquality mixed-use development. With views across the river to The Embankment open space, only a short walk across the Town Bridge to the city centre and less than a mile from the mainline railway station, the site was ripe for redevelopment – with the restoration of the old listed buildings and construction of new ones.
With much of the city low lying, stormwater management can be a challenge. Peterborough City Council encourages innovative thinking in the using of sustainable drainage systems, and the adjacent river available for water discharge made the new development an obvious good fit. Although the original plans were to use a conventional piped stormwater system, alternative methods were investigated and the GreenBlue Urban ArborFlow tree pit system was chosen.

Harrison Stevens, the landscape architects, worked closely with Peterborough Investment Partnership and their engineers and planning consultants to design a scheme that worked hydraulically as well as visually, and the whole development has won several awards for the quality of the project, which was constructed by Bowmer and Kirkland during the period spanning 2016-2020. Sustainable drainage features were implemented across the whole development, using both rain gardens and tree pits between and around the buildings to attenuate and clean the rainwater from the hard surfaces and roofs. The GreenBlue Urban StormForm panel system allows for a fast inrush of stormwater preventing localised flooding, and directing the water down into the bio-remediation soil, allowing slow percolation giving optimum water treatment and pollutant removal. The trees are protected by the GreenBlue Urban Precast tree grille, allowing gaseous exchange for the soil, and giving additional drainage for times of exceedance flow.

The success of the project is obvious – Peterborough City Council has moved into the restored engine sheds, and the public realm has matured beautifully, offering green spaces for the enjoyment of all those who live, work and play here. As the trees grow, increasing in canopy size and density, they become more and more efficient in dealing with stormwater and in providing shade and heat mitigation – a truly resilient development, designed to cope with whatever climate change throws at it.
