CLARK Material Handling Company Promotes Forklift Safety Day

C

LARK Material Handling Company is pleased to announce activities too fully support and promote the first National Forklift Safety Day June 10 with a full slate of activities and promotions. National Forklift Safety Day has been established by the Industrial Truck Association and its member companies. CLARK has a full complement of events scheduled to endorse and promote this day at its Lexington, KY., North American headquarters. A number of events are planned for June 10th including: • An open house for local customers • L ift Truck Operator Instructor Training Certification Course will be offered Onsite • New equipment safety demonstrations • Safety specific product walkarounds • D river demonstrations on the safe operation of forklift trucks • A display of CLARK’s aftermarket safety products • L ocal media coverage including both print and radio outlets

In addition to the activities at CLARK in Lexington, the Industrial Truck Association has a two full days of events scheduled in Washington, DC to support this endeavor. The Association has arranged activities June 9th and 10th that include keynote comments by OSHA and a reception with key government officials. In addition to events focused on forklift safety, ITA member companies will also be meeting with their congressional leadership to discuss a number of trade initiatives currently in negotiation. These trade initiatives including TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership), TPA (Trade Promotion Authority) and TPP (Trans Pacific Partnership) are designed to address many of the export trade barriers that US lift truck manufacturers currently face. Scott Johnson, Vice President of Business Development for CLARK and a member of the ITA Executive Committee and Board of Directors expressed enthusiasm and great hope for National Forklift Safety Day. “CLARK is very proud to be an active member of the ITA and fully endorses this event. As an industry we should be very

proud of our efforts and our results as it relates to the safe operation and design of today’s material handling products and operational practices. Through the efforts of all manufacturers working together in the Industrial Truck Association we have been able to evaluate, refine and adopt product standards and operational standards that have resulted in safer products and safer work conditions for lift truck operators everywhere. It is appropriate to annually recognize these accomplishments and to remind everyone that safe products and safe operations are not a cost, but rather a benefit to all parties. The events we have planned at CLARK are designed to highlight the safety of CLARK products and to reinforce safe operating procedures for lift trucks.” For additional information regarding CLARK’s National Forklift Safety Day activities and plans contact Sherry Myers at sherrymyers@clarkmhc.com or call (859) 422-6537.

Getting and Keeping Your Client’s Attention

Safe, Fast, Easy Forklift Maintenance Forklift Service & Maintenance Lifts

By: Mike Marchev

H

ere are three questions to ask yourself:

• H ow can I add more value to my relationships? • What makes me different? • How can I get and keep my client’s attention?

I heard it ringing. When I did, the voice on the other end quickly said, “So you actually do what you say you do. You do answer your own phone.”

The answer consists of only seven words. It’s true. And, I arrived at that conclusion after witnessing two recent events. The first revelation came as a result of meeting a man at a trade show booth. After swapping business cards I told him that I would be getting back to him. When I called him the next morning, he said the following … “I never thought in a million years you would actually follow through. I thought your words were the typical sales chatter ... meaningless.” What did I do that was so exceptional? I called the guy back like I said I would. The second instance was a bit more taxing. I answered the telephone when

I remember saying to myself, “You must be kidding?” In fact, these two fundamental customer service tenets have become remarkably rare, and I am sorry to say, they are very much a BIG DEAL. The answer to the bulleted questions above consists of just seven words: Do what you say you will do. Simple? Yes. Profound? Absolutely. But be warned – you will find this to be easier said than done. But in the end, it will be very much worth the effort. Starting this week and for the next few ... oh hell, forever – do what you say you are going to do. Contact Mike at mike@mikemarchev.com or visit www.mikemarchev.com

Creamer’s Corner

Discouraged Dennis Sings The Blues! By: Micheal Creamer

R

ecently I received a request from Dennis for information regarding a Tennant Model 8410. The rear squeegee holder is all “bent-up” and mis-aligned. Dennis asked me to tell him what all of his options were. He sounded very discouraged but I encouraged him not to be. “We will get your sweeper/scrubber fixed-up in a jiffy.” First of all, the Tennant Model 8410 is among the largest sweeper/scrubbers in the cleaning industry. It was first introduced in 2003. Its forerunner was the 8400, which went in production in 1998. These machines have been around for some time. It weighs in at a hefty 6,900 pounds and has a length of about 10 feet. So, the point is that sometimes when the machine is cornered into a tight place the rear squeegee can get easily caught onto something and get substantially damaged. To determine the damage, it must be removed from the machine. Once removed, a better evaluation can be made. So, let’s go ahead and remove the entire squeegee assembly. To remove the rear squeegee assembly: 1. Start the engine and lower the rear squeegee. Shut off the engine. Set the parking brake.

half_pg_ad_outlines.indd 1

2. Raise the rear of the machine using a floor jack. Now set blocks to raise the machine. These will not slip or slide as a jack stand may. 3. Remove all the hardware (i.e. screws, nuts, spacers, etc.) from the rear squeegee lift cable where it attaches to the center of the squeegee frame. 4. Remove the vacuum hose from the pipe on the frame. 5. Remove the two tension springs on either side where the link rods connect to each side of the frame. 6. Remove all the hardware from the four link rods (two on each side) where they connect to the squeegee pivot brackets. 7. The squeegee assembly can now be removed from the machine. As long as the squeegee frame is not bent-up too severely, it can be straightened. The squeegee assembly must be completely dismantled removing all hardware, squeegee blades, bushings, etc. Many times I have seen frames heated up with a torch and hammered back. This works sometimes and sometimes it does not. Here is your second option: If straightening isn’t working, it is time to buy a new frame. When you get the new

frame all of the parts from your old frame have to be transferred to the new frame. At this point, you should have already determined if other parts needed to be replaced as well (i.e. the front and rear squeegee blades). Remember to replace in pairs. You will want to look at the squeegee bands that hold on the blades too. If the squeegee frame is bent up to a point of no return and a frame is not for you. Then the entire squeegee assembly can always be purchased. The squeegee assembly comes pre-assembled and ready-to-go. All that needs to be done is installed and adjusted. One has to level the assembly as well so the machine operates properly without streaks. Email me if there is a squeegee assembly in your future. There are after-market assemblies that can save you a bunch of money. I will need your machine model number at best and perhaps your serial number. Read next month and find out what Dennis decides to do. As always, I thank you for reading.

Industry News Free Online Calculator for Lift Truck Fleet

E

nerSys®, the global leader in stored energy for industrial applications, has launched the material handling industry’s first online calculator that allows customers to compare monthly costs of liquid propane fuel vs. electricity, using leased lift trucks, batteries and chargers. In as little as five minutes, customers can get an accurate picture of the cost of converting lift truck fleets to electric power. “We’re busting the myth that electric lift trucks cost more upfront due to the cost of the battery and charger,” says Mark Tomaszewski, manager, emerging technologies, EnerSys. “The reality is, customers can lease batteries and chargers, paying for them as a monthly expense just as they would pay for propane fuel. When the battery and charger are leased, the savings begin from day one.”

Other online calculators have fixed fields that assume up-front capital costs for the electric lift truck, battery and charger. But, that does not present a true cost picture if customers want to lease. The EnerSys® Convert to ElectricSM (C2ESM) calculator is the first readily available tool that incorporates the cost of leasing the lift trucks, batteries and chargers.

The calculator allows customers to factor in options specific to their operations, such as number of trucks, hours of use, truck capacity, equipment type, fuel type, term of lease and interest rate. Customers operating in all conditions — heavy loads, multiple shifts, indoors or outdoors, longer shifts — can enter their options in the fields provided. Slider bars on each field enable customers to adjust for changing conditions, such as the recent surge in propane prices. The calculator allows customers to lock in prices for the lease term, so they can see stable monthly costs for batteries and chargers compared with propane’s potential ups and downs. After entering all the information, customers get an initial cost picture and cost comparison of propane to electric. They can then contact their lift truck dealer or EnerSys for a more detailed assessment. “With this tool, we’re helping customers be more informed about their choices, so they can have more knowledge and control over the decision-making process,” says Tomaszewski. “In five minutes, they can receive a financial snapshot that helps them prepare for the next steps in the purchasing or leasing process.”

Reduce safety risks & workers comp claims!

New Manual Extension Forks Thin profile allows easy entry on 4-way GMA type pallets!

Always there when you need them! Manual Extension Forks provide a simple solution for handling differing load sizes or dual load transport. They replace the original forklift tines so they are always there when you need them.

FINGERTIP LOCKING MECHANISM!

A simple fingertip locking mechanism, which doubles as a grease point, allows the forks to be extended manually and locked into an extended position for safe and secure transport of goods. They’re ideal for applications which have infrequent need for handling differing loads sizes. For more demanding applications, we recommend our original hydraulic telescopic KOOI-REACHFORKS® which allow length adjustment at the touch of a lever. Health Nudge

Good Health Lies In What You Eat By: Bonnie Steer

T

VH’s Nudge program loves to keep active but also knows the key to good health lies in what you eat. The adage reminds us “you can’t out exercise a bad diet.” Thus, knowing a good diet is essential to optimal health; Nudge looks for ways to incorporate nutrition into our routine. One of the first nutritional ventures Nudge took on was to provide fresh fruit for all employees. Executive management decided that to really make an impact that the fruit should be provided on a weekly basis and at no additional cost to employees. We sent out several communications announcing our program, asked employees to be respectful by taking only one serving, and to enjoy it as a healthy replacement for an unhealthy snack. From there, Nudge set out a variety of fruit in baskets

in the most popular and visited areas – the lunch and break rooms. As you can imagine, this quickly became one of the employee’s favorite days and four years later, everyone still looks forward to receiving a weekly piece of fruit. “I love fruit day and look forward to it every week,” says Marcia Smith 9 year employee. “It reminds me to eat better and keeps me away from an overly processed snack. A lot of those snacks just fill you up for a little bit, but add nothing to your overall health.” TVH has also revamped their vending areas from traditional vending machines to a pantry style system. This allows TVH to include more fresh offerings like yogurt, fresh salads and sandwiches, along with vegetables with humus and low fat dips. “It’s important to our mission of becoming a healthier company to provide ac-

cess to better food for employees,” says Frank Carter, General Manager and VP. “Working with our current vending operator helps us to deliver these options.” In addition to our weekly fruit day, TVH employees are offered at least one nutritional event a month. For example, we invite local chefs to contribute their tips for nutritious meals, we make green smoothies as a treat for employees, and share healthy recipes that are easy to make. The green smoothies are a great introduction to incorporating more vegetables into our diets. As Americans, our diets are lacking in the nutrients that come from vegetables. According to the research group, NPD, kids and adults eat an average of about a cup of vegetables a day and a half a cup of fruit. This amount is way below the US government recommendation of 2.5 cups of vegetables and one cup of fruit a day. A Green Smoothie is an easy, tasty way to incorporate more vegetables into your diet. It’s especially helpful for those who have a hard time with the taste of vegetables. “I like some vegetables but I’m

a picky eater and don’t like the taste of a lot of greens,” says Don Holman, 22 year employee. “I’m willing to try the green smoothies, and although I didn’t like the first one I tried, I really liked the recipe Nudge used with the mint and pineapple. That’s one I would make for myself.” This goes to show that fresh food is tasty food, and if you don’t like something, the recipe may be to blame, not the food. So keep trying it in different ways until you find a way you like it. As much as we love being active, Nudge knows that you won’t make much health progress without a good diet. Keeping that in mind, Nudge continues to explore new nutritional avenues to incorporate into our business and our employee’s lifestyles. We hope you try and enjoy our most popular green smoothie receipe! If you have questions about adding more nutritional options at your business contact Bonnie at bonnie.steer@tvh.com for more information.

PA Industrial Equipment, Inc. Diana Solano, 2-year employee, and Jennifer Hataway, 1-year employee, show off the cookbook, The Cleaner Plate, where they learned to make a tasty beet humus and homemade vinegarette from chef Beth Bader.

The fabric cover is made from 12.5 oz., UV-resistant, high-density polyethylene which features a rip-stop weave. The fabric is available in several customizable colors and in flame-retardant polyethylene. For high-wind locations, customers may opt for a 22 oz., PVC-coated, woven vinyl cover as an alternative solution. Unlike traditional wood or metal structures, the fabric’s permeability allows the transmission of exceptional natural light, eliminating the need of supplemental lighting during the day all while reducing operating and electricity costs. “We’re always trying to provide the best product, while still keeping costs down,” said ClearSpan’s President and C.E.O., Barry Goldsher. “Thinking outside the box when finding cost-effective methods or materials can have positive effects for our customers.” During the design process, ClearSpan’s in-house engineers use the most state-of-the-art, computeraided design software to ensure the structure meets local wind- and snow-load requirements, regardless of where the structure is built. Available up to 300’ wide and at any length, stamped engineered documents can also be provided. Minimal Foundation Requirements Given the unique design and versatility of ClearSpan Fabric Structures, the buildings can either be permanent or temporary and there are many foundation options to choose from. One of the more popular – and economically efficient – methods of installation is the

use of the company’s Helical Anchors, which require minimal foundation and excavation. The steel trusses are bolted to each Helical Anchor. For added internal clearance, Hercules Truss Arch Buildings can be mounted on concrete blocks, piers, wood posts and poured concrete foundations. If one of these alternative foundation solutions better suits your needs, ClearSpan’s engineering team can assist with specific designs. Warranties and Financing Separating ClearSpan in the fabric structure industry is the ability to provide in-house financing and competitive warranties. Pending credit approval, customers can expect up to seven years financing, which includes zero money down and no interest for the life of the plan. In addition, payments can be deferred for up to one year, allowing customers to enjoy their new facility prior to their financial obligations. They can also expect their Hercules Truss Arch Building to last well into the future. With a 50 year warranty on the structural steel and a 20 year warranty on the fabric cover, ClearSpan’s “Buildings of 1,000 Uses” are the clear leader. ClearSpan Fabric Structures, with corporate offices in South Windsor, Conn., provides design-build solutions for bulk material storage and logistical needs. ClearSpan buildings feature abundant natural light and spacious interiors without internal support posts. With minimal foundation requirements, the structures can be permanent or temporary and are easy to relocate. Made in the USA, they can be built to any length and up to 300’ wide. Tech Talk

Maximize Profit by Properly Quoting A Reman Engine

A

t the dealership level, an engine overhaul job should be very profitable if managed correctly. However, if the quote is not created properly the dealership can give away the profits. This article will explain how to maximize profit by properly quoting a reman engine. Every job begins at the quotation level. If the quotation is incorrect or incomplete it will obviously effect the job’s profitability. Two problems occur upon quotation: engine model identification and engine failure identification (or core charge acknowledgement). From my experience in the reman engine business, proper engine identification is a common mistake for many dealers. The engine model should always be confirmed by calling either the forklifts OEM or your reman engine supplier with the relevant ID information. Quite often the parts or service writers use the technicians description of the engine. This may work sometimes but can come back to haunt you and eat away at the job’s bottom line if incorrect. The other mistake more commonly made is not asking the correct questions about the customer’s engine failure. The most important question is: “What is the failure of the customer’s engine? Or, why are we replacing the engine?” If the engine is seized, if the technician can visually see a hole in the block, or if there is water in the oil, this gives the service writer great insight into whether the dealership will be charged for the core. Often, engine jobs are quoted completely excluding the core charge in the quote. If a core charge comes back the dealer has two choices: either absorb the core resulting in lost profit, or go back to the customer after the truck has been delivered which results in an unhappy customer. Neither of these two scenarios are appealing, that is, if your dealership cares about customer satisfaction. Some would say that the correct way to quote the job is to include the entire core charge amount in the quote. This way, when a core charge comes back you are covered. This is better than not including the core charge but is still problematic. I will continually argue that the problem is not in the core charge amount or how it is displayed, but rather in the communication of the issue itself. Let me explain.

If the core charge is included in the quote it must be understood by the customer that a credit will be issued against the amount after the core is returned. If this is not communicated properly and a local repair company also quotes the job without a core, it may cause confusion between the two quotes. The local repair company may get the job simply because the customer feels more comfortable not having to deal with the large core charge amount or may misunderstand and think the local guy is less expensive. In this case, no profit exists when the job is lost. Once you have identified the engine’s failure it is simple to call your reman engine supplier and ask them about core charges. At All Industrial Engine we make it a point to go over the common core charges that exist for that particular engine model and/or tell you the core charge for your particular failure. 95% of the time a core charge can be communicated at the time of quote instead of at time of final core inspection. Many times the engine supplier will state that on that engine model a core charge will not exceed a certain amount. Communication between all parties is the key. With this information you can prepare the quote to explain the price of the reman engine plus the final core charge. When quoting the final core charge it can be explained to the customer up front, e.g. “due to the broken crankshaft an additional $$$ will be added to the cost of the reman engine.” When the competitor only quotes the engine your quote will stand out because the customer will know that you have done your homework and prepared a complete quote to include the customer’s specific failure. By quoting a job this way the customer will never receive a core credit or have to deal with any confusion related to core charges. This method works on many levels. Most important is a profitable job concluding with a satisfied customer. Also, from my experience at the forklift dealership level, core charges are always a touchy area and most people feel abused when they are notified by the engine supplier of a core charge. However, with better communication of the engines failure between the dealership and engine supplier, a core charge will no longer be

a surprise but rather a confirmation of what was discussed at the time of the quotation. By properly quoting a reman engine with better information and communication between all parties involved you can maximize the profit of your next reman.

Summer Gas Means Cleaner Air, Better Fuel Economy

I

t’s no secret that the annual climb in gas prices that accompanies the transition to ‘summer blend’ gasoline rattles many cost-conscious consumers... but there’s also no denying the benefits both visible and invisible.

pollution we all saw during the Beijing Olympics of 2008... that’s what some of our cities might look like if we didn’t have these regulations,” added DeHaan.

“It’s important to remember why it began,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy.com. “The summer gasoline requirement was a critical part of the Clean Air Act. It was approved with overwhelming support by Congress and signed into law by President George H.W. Bush in 1990. At the time, the three major environmental threats were acid rain, urban air pollution, and toxic air emissions. That’s why the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates the volatility of conventional gasoline sold at retail stations during the summer smog season (June 1- Sept. 15) to reduce evaporative emissions that contribute to smog.”

“If you want to see the invisible benefits just check your mileage. You should see a slight improvement. Cars like warm weather a lot better than the punishing cold. Winter gas contains more butane and the fuel diluted with ethanol and/ or butane typically lowers fuel economy by 1 to 3% due to lower energy content. Gasoline sold in warmer months has a higher energy content which results in better gas mileage,” DeHaan noted.

Reformulated Gasoline (RFG) was mandated for those metro areas with the worst smog beginning in 1995. It’s blended to burn cleaner than conventional gasoline, reducing emissions of smog-forming and toxic pollutants.

Watch for

“By reducing the volatility of the summer gasoline, which is measured by the Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP), we also reduce emissions. (Summer blend gas has lower RVP than winter gasoline.) How important is that? Just think back to the air

Mileage improves, slightly...

“Of course, in warm weather your engine reaches normal operating temperature faster so fuel economy improves. Heat reduces your oil’s viscosity and that reduces drag on the engine and increases your gas mileage. Your car’s engine operates more efficiently when the oil flows like water, not sludge.”

GasBuddy is the premiere source for real-time local gas prices. Founded in 2000, GasBuddy.com developed as an initiative to provide consumers access to local, current gas prices. Through the GasBuddy.com website and the free GasBuddy mobile app, users can find and share gas prices with fellow drivers, saving big money at the pump.

5 Keys to Developing Personal Power Working on Emotional Intelligence Skills Can Open the Door to Achievement By: Lynda Chervil

P

ersonal power is a core leadership competency that everyone needs to develop before they can lead others. It has to do with being able to lead yourself. “Personal power is the ability to achieve what you want,” according to Frederick Mann, a successful entrepreneur and author of The Economic Rape of America. “More than anything else, it is personal power that brings you success and happiness. The biggest barrier to success in almost any endeavor is powerlessness, negativity, helplessness, and inertia. They belong together. The problem is not only our own powerlessness, but also the powerlessness of those around us.” We can help harness and learn to use our personal power by understanding and working on our Emotional Intelligence (EI) skills. Not long ago, when I worked in a corporate environment, there was a strong push to incorporate EI into the organization’s leadership training curriculum as an array of skills and characteristics that drive leadership performance. EI is “the ability to monitor one’s own and others’ feelings and emotions, to discriminate among them and to use this information to guide one’s thinking and actions,” according to psychologists John D. Mayer and Peter Salovey, who co-developed the concept and were two of the three authors of the Emotional Intelligence Test. My EI training and its practical applications to my work team environment still resonate in my personal life. They became skills that I now methodically apply to current situations in both personal and entrepreneurial pursuits. There are several EI models, but the one to which I ascribe is the mixed model introduced by Daniel Goldman, a combination of ability and traits. Here are Goldman’s five main EI constructs, and my views on how each of us can develop them: 1. Self-awareness: the ability to know one’s emotions, strengths, weaknesses, drives, values and goals and recognize their impact on others while using gut feelings to guide decisions. In order to become self-aware, you need to conduct an honest self-assessment to determine your strengths and weaknesses, such as powerlessness and inertia, and determine the root causes. You then

need to create a plan that will help you overcome your fears, which are barriers to courage and stand between you and your successes. While I am a big proponent of using my intuition to guide my decisions, whenever it is appropriate, I need to caution that unless your gut feelings are often more right than wrong, you cannot make decisions solely based upon intuition. You need to use a balanced combination of intuition and logic. 2. Self-regulation: involves controlling or redirecting one’s disruptive emotions and impulses and adapting to changing circumstances. Simply put, you need to exercise selfdiscipline and know how to control your emotions and be flexible in order to adapt to changing situations. You cannot continue on the same trajectory or keep the same plans when the circumstances or facts have changed. Your plans need to be modified accordingly. 3. Social skills: managing relationships to move people in the desired direction. Your social skills refer to your interpersonal skills or your ability to relate and connect with people, which can motivate them to deploy discretionary efforts to help you achieve goals that are best accomplished via partnership and collaboration. Here are some tips for improving your social skills: a. P ay attention to the feedback of friends and co-workers, good and bad. Train yourself to repeat the behaviors that get positive feedback and work on eliminating those that make people react negatively. b. V iew constructive criticism as just that. When we become defensive, we don’t hear what can be very helpful feedback. c. L earn to handle conflict and confrontation from a perspective of compassion and caring. Personal coaching can be very helpful in learning to be more diplomatic in your interactions with others. 4. Empathy: considering other people’s feelings, especially when making decisions. Some people believe empathy cannot be learned, but I believe just the oppo-

site. Put yourself in the other person’s shoes and try to see situations from their perspective. Might they be feeling fear? Shame? Guilt? How do those emotions make you feel? Understanding and addressing the concerns of others is essential to EI. Always consider intent versus impact, and how your actions or decisions may affect the individuals or groups involved. 5. Motivation: being driven to achieve for the sake of achievement. Simply put, what motivates you? What are your benchmarks for success? Once you achieve certain levels of success, you need to consistently set new benchmarks to keep chasing personal excellence! Practice your EI skills on yourself first, and you’ll develop greater personal power. That can lead to achievements you may never have dreamed possible.

Product Preview Next Generation HVLS Fan Moves More Air For Less

AC Conversion Kits For Golf Carts Now Available

Quantum Announces Huge Inventory of Wire Shelving

Kelley has unveiled the WAVE™, a new HVLS fan design featuring advanced technology and design elements to distribute more air while using less energy than other HVLS fans. It is the most significant innovation that the market has seen in years and is set to advance HVLS technology through its highly intelligent controls, increased airflow and superior energy efficiency.

TVH is now offering AC Conversion Kits for your golf cart! Standard DC motors don’t have the power that an AC motor can provide. Now TVH offers an entire kit to give you the extra speed, torque, and efficiency you need!

Quantum Storage Systems offers wire shelving in more sizes and finishes than any other supplier: chrome, Proform (Green Epoxy), black epoxy, stainless steel wire and solid stainless steel, solid galvanized and a consumer grade chrome plated wire unit that ships in one box. Shelf depths range from 12" to 36", lengths from 24" to 72", and post heights from 6" to 96".

The Kelley WAVE features an optimized five (5) blade profile which translates to greater airflow all while conserving energy consumption.

With an AC Conversion Kit you will be able to have adjustable speeds of 25+ mph. With this power you also get more efficiency. You will have longer drive time with an AC motor, partly due to its regenerative braking capabilities.
