CLARK Named Kentucky Manufacturer of the Year

Konecranes offers crane safety management training courses

LARK Material Handling Company is the proud recipient of the 2014 Mid-Size Manufacturer of the Year award presented by the Kentucky Association of Manufacturers (KAM). The award was announced at the 14th annual Manufacturer & Employee of the Year Awards Luncheon held at the Seelbach Hilton in Louisville, KY. “Having a positive manufacturing presence in Kentucky is something CLARK is proud of. To win this award and be acknowledged amongst our peers is an honor,” commented CLARK’s Chief Operations Officer Chuck Moratz. Award winners were selected based on the following criteria by an independent awards selection committee:

onecranes, a leading global manufacturer of lifting technology, offers overhead crane safety management training courses, including proper operations, requirements and regulations, good management practices, and special concerns in nuclear environments.

C

• Innovative and entrepreneurial leadership with regard to products, production method, or services. • Recognized leadership in making a key contribution to the quality of life in the Commonwealth and the community. • Active involvement in organizations that advance industry and manufacturing.

“These awards pay tribute to those from our manufacturing community who provide leadership, demonstrate high standards, and promote manufacturing here in the Commonwealth, and these winners personify the best of the best,” stated KAM President & CEO Greg Higdon. “We had a record number of nominees this year, making our selection committee’s job even more difficult than usual. We congratulate all of our nominees, and our 2014 winners.”

K

The one-day crane safety management training course from Konecranes gives supervisors and plant, facility, and safety managers in-depth information on OSHA and ASME B30 requirements pertaining to crane safety. Detailed and interactive discussions will cover the reasons behind regulatory requirements and will also cover good management practices. Expert instructors at Konecranes will review applicable federal material handling rules and regulations, discuss the proper operation of overhead cranes, and talk about the roles and responsibilities of personnel associated with overhead cranes.

Safety and equipment inspections will be covered in detail in the crane safety management course from Konecranes, including equipment rejection criteria, required inspection frequency, conducting near miss and accident investigations, and record keeping requirements. Attendees will also be trained in what to consider when developing and implementing a proper maintenance program. Also available from Konecranes are twoday nuclear crane management courses, which focus on the special concerns of working in nuclear environments. In addition to general crane safety topics, participants will learn about specific nuclear regulations governing cranes and hoists, including NUREG 0612 rules on control of heavy loads at nuclear power plants. Also covered are new procedures and equipment available for nuclear operations and rigging standards for slings. For further information on the overhead crane training programs available at Konecranes, visit cranetrainingu.com.

estfalia Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of logistics solutions for plants, warehouses and distribution centers since 1992, is a winner of the 2014 Green Supply Chain Awards, presented by Supply and Demand Chain Executive. Out of more than 100 entries, Supply & Demand Chain Executive selected Westfalia for helping clients “go green” and promote sustainability by minimizing land usage, decreasing energy consumption, and reducing waste production through its warehouse automation solutions. Dan Labell, owner and president of Westfalia Technologies, said, “In addition to helping customers maximize their productivity and efficiency with our warehouse automation solutions, Westfalia is also committed to incorporating green initiatives into our efforts. Specifically, our automated storage and retrieval systems’ ‘Go Green with High Density’ design minimizes building footprints, which in turn lowers construction costs and decreases energy usage.” On average, Westfalia’s AS/RS reduces square-footage requirements by 40% when compared to conventional warehouses,

while lowering energy consumption by 30%. In addition, the picking accuracy provided by the company’s WMS/WCS software, Savanna.NET®, virtually eliminates waste and damage. The 2014 Green Supply Chain Awards recognize companies making green or sustainability a core part of their supply chain strategy, and are working to achieve measurable sustainability goals within their own operations and/or supply chains, in the areas of Sourcing/Procurement, Fulfillment/ Logistics, Operations, Product Lifecycle Management, and other areas of the supply chain. The awards also recognize providers of supply chain solutions and services assisting their customers in achieving measurable sustainability goals. The official announcement of the awards will appear in the December 2014 Green Supply Chain Award issue of the magazine and online at www.SDCExec.com. Meanwhile, the first issue of Westfalia’s The Satellite Review Magazine is available for download here: www.westfaliausa.com/ satellitemag.

The Associated Wire Rope Fabricators (AWRF) Product Information Exhibition (PIE) earlier this month (October) concluded a run of five trade events in six weeks, which included the Slingmax Conference & Major Products Information (SCAMPI), an open house at Mazzella, the Crane & Rigging Conference Canada and the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA) Crane & Rigging Workshop. Straightpoint Inc. will also have a presence at other conferences and exhibi-

tions before the end of the year including NACB’s annual Professional Development Conference in Las Ve-gas in November. David Ayling, director of Straightpoint, said: “We’ve moved to a new U.S. premises in Camarillo, California and welcomed three new staff. It is important that we support this growth by giving existing and potential customers a brand they can identify with, which is a slow but meaningful process involving an ongoing presence at the right trade shows and events. It is no secret that we want to expand further and have ad-ditional facilities, starting with one in the Houston area. We have the products to achieve that growth.” Straightpoint’s new Radiolink Plus wireless tension load cell includes a new chassis and circuitry in a more streamlined shape, making it even more robust and practical than before. The design achieves IP67 protection even with the battery cover miss-ing, which is ideal for use in marine and offshore conditions. Additionally, the battery section now boasts reverse polarity protection, shielding the product from damage if the

batteries are inserted the wrong way. Ayling is frank about his vision for the company to become synonymous with the safe and accurate measuring of loads in the U.S. and across the world and, to this end, he reiterated the importance of maintaining a presence at the industry’s leading and most well-respected trade events. Working in close collaboration with Straightpoint Inc. general manager John Molidor the pair plot their trade show strategy in line with a set of criteria and Ayling revealed they look favorably on the co-location of a product exhibition with a conference or educational sessions. “We find conferences attract the right kind of audience,” he explained. “Attendees tend to be people with open minds who want to educate themselves. If they show a willingness to learn it often means that they are more engaged in the industry than simply choosing product based on price. We prefer smaller, niche exhibitions with educational seminars available onsite.”

Ayling added: “It was very well attended but everything worked like clockwork. From the exhibition area to functions and events in the evenings, we were given the tools to interact with key people in an environment conducive to networking and introducing our products and services to a receptive, interested audience. We definitely plan to be at the 2015 Crane & Rigging Workshop in Denver next September.”

Based on this, he singled out the SC&RA Crane & Rigging Workshop for special praise: “It was our first SC&RA event as an exhibitor and we were impressed on a number of levels. It gave us a real sense of the size of the organization and how im-portant it could become to achieving our growth targets for Straightpoint Inc.”

Ayling has another set of criteria that he uses retrospectively to judge a trade show. For example, if he picks up a new distributor for Straightpoint equipment and spends time with four or five existing distributors, that is typically enough to mark it down as a worthwhile investment of the company’s time and money.

Become the Exception

Am I the only lazy slug out there?

M

y phone rang last night. The display on the base of the phone read “Unidentified Caller.” I don’t usually answer the phone when I see this displayed … but last evening I did. The person asked for Mike Marchev. I said, “Speaking.” She then attempted to interest me in her Energy Company or Service. Being that it was dinner time, I politely interrupted her in the middle of her script and in a calm voice informed her that, “I am not in the market for a new Energy Company and in fact, you have called before and have told you the same thing.” I then bid her a sincere good-bye and gently hung up the phone. I soon found myself analyzing the situation. What if this woman’s company really was better? What if a new service could actually save me money while supplying a more reliable service? Why didn’t I give this salesperson the time to deliver her

message? She was probably a very nice, honest, hard-working woman who had nothing but good intentions … and who wanted to earn a living so her kids could eat regularly. What was wrong with me? (Sound like anybody you know?) The only logical answer I could come up with was that “the devil I knew was better than the devil I did not know.” I did not invent this phrase. It just happens to be true as rain. That and the fact that I must be a lazy slug and an uncaring husband who did not have any interest whatsoever in investigating any potential money saving, service-improving opportunities without them being my idea. Shortly after giving this woman a second thought, I immediately erased her from my mind … until I elected to use her as an example in today’s blog post. And so it is with you my good friends and

fellow sales professionals. You are faced with the same conundrum while regularly experiencing the same outcome. Your prospects simply don’t care, or they are too lazy to think about anything that is not their idea. Change involves work. And nobody (nobody) enjoys taking on additional work until it is absolutely necessary. (This does not make them bad people.)

lazy to recognize.

Chances of your force-feeding yourself and your ideas onto unsuspecting “targets” are not good. Dare I even say impossible? Why? It involves work.

I understand that I have not delivered a concrete solution today to anything. I think I just needed to hear myself think. I truly hope that I am not getting ripped-off by my current power supplier. But until some phone jockey manages to capture my attention long enough to blow in my ear with a few “what-if” scenarios, or until my power suddenly fails me at an inopportune time, I will never know. I hope this woman keps on calling. One evening just after my stove stops working, I will be ready to take her call.

The secret lies in being visible, reachable and available when your “target” wakes up with travel on their minds. (It must be their idea.) Until then, it is in your best interest to do, say, write and report non-threatening information that gets your “targets” to think about the possible missed opportunities they may be too

ClearSpan adds options to HD Building Line Now Available in 160, 180 and 200’ lengths

C

learSpan Fabric Structures, the industry leader in tension fabric structures, has added three different length options to its HD Building solutions. The HD Buildings are available in both gable- and round-style designs and can be mounted as a freestanding structure or affixed to other foundations, such as ponywalls or containers. HD Buildings are made from triple-galvanized structural steel tubing for the frame and a 12.5 oz., high-density polyethylene (HDPE) rip-stop fabric cover. Since there are no internal support posts, the building allows for maximum usable space. The fabric cover is available in several colors, and its permeable properties make it extremely energy efficient. The polyethylene material allows the transmission of abundant natural light, significantly cutting costs that would otherwise be needed for supplemental lighting. What’s more, the pre-fabricated

design of 20’ on center truss rafter spacing yields an expedited production time, so customers can receive their building quickly. “We added the three lengths of 160, 180 and 200’ simply due to customer demand,” stated ClearSpan’s Senior Vice President, Matt Niaura. “Having these new profiles in our system will allow for a faster overall process from order to installation.” The HD buildings start at 25’ wide and cost as little as $7.49 dollars per square foot. End panels and accessories are also available, but are sold separately. “We’re always trying to provide the best product, while still keeping costs down,” ClearSpan President and C.E.O., Barry Goldsher, said. For more information, please call 1.866.643.1010 to speak to a knowledgeable Truss Arch Sales Specialist or visit www.clearspan.com.

ecently I was reminded of an event I will never forget. It all started one afternoon when a customer with a pick-up truck backed into our receiving dock. In his truck was a Tennant 5700 Scrubber. This machine was being returned from a rental customer. I was immediately advised that this machine was back, however, something was wrong with it and I needed to look at it. I went immediately to check this machine out and the driver said “here is your scrubber; my company wanted me to bring back so we didn’t have to pay to have it picked-up.” One look is all it took. I said “OMG, what in the heck happened to it?”To describe it now is laughable but at that time is was very upsetting. As I remember the tires were flat with one of them half off the rim. The rotary brush blocks were cracked and one of them broke in half. The actual frame was bent. The rear squeegee was off the machine and also bent. The solution tank lid had come off the machine and just sitting on top tied with a rope to hold it on. Then there were the battery cables hanging out of the machine as if someone had

ripped them out. Once again, I questioned him, “What happened to our machine?” Well, he said. I had this thing in the back of my pick-up. It is a pretty heavy scrubber, so I thought it would stay back there without tying it down. I hit a bump on the road and the load shifted. It fell out of the back on the expressway. He then stated, “Don’t worry, it was the slow lane and nobody hit it.” By this point I was getting quite disturbed and all I remember was letting out a laugh and asking, “How in the world did you get this back onto your truck?” Just a note: This machine is a walk-behind scrubber, however, it weighs about 1,500 pounds so one man could not have lifted it. He explained that there was a car-load of college kids driving by and help him put it back onto the pick-up truck. “The batteries fell out of this thing, I think I put them all back”, he said.

I stood there for a time just thinking. It seemed like an hour and said. “Everybody thinks they can haul anything in their pick-up. You need to call your boss and tell him that he didn’t save any money by you. Tell him that he just bought a Tennant 5700 Scrubber and would he like a price on rebuilding it?” He said, “Does that mean you’re not going to take it back?” All I have to say is “O M G” Believe it or not it is a true story and one that I can laugh at today! In the beginning of this article I said that I had been reminded of this. The other day someone had told me they had a friend that lost a washing machine “that fell out of their pick-up truck.” As always, thanks for reading. You can e-mail me a creamerscorner@ hi-gear.com

Key to Forklift Safety

A

nnually there are over 34,000 injury accidents that involve forklifts, more than 13,000 Workers’ Compensation claims are filed as a result of forklift accidents and 70 to 90% of all accidents are caused by operator error. Furthermore, unnecessary wear and tear resulting in higher maintenance costs are attributable to improper operation and poorly trained operators.

There soaring statistics can be significantly reduced by implementing a comprehensive training program to help reduce accidents, injuries, employer liability and maintenance costs, only to realize improved morale, productivity and efficiency. The results (shown to the right), of a detailed study sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), found that proper training can improve operator safety and performance by as much as 70%. Properly trained forklift operators are the responsibility of the employer, as clearly stated in the O.S.H.A. Federal Regulation 1910.178, and safe operating practices must be reinforced in the workplace on a daily basis in addition to the required training, testing, evaluations and employer authorizations. The training program must include formal classroom instruction, written test and a driving evaluation or performance test for each specific forklift that the employee will operate. A periodic evaluation of each operator’s performance is required. Refresher or remedial training is required and the employer must check training to ensure that it is current.

How To label chemicals when migrating them to secondary containers (and stay complaint with OSHA’s new GHS rules)

W

e are excited to publish this excellent guest blog post written by one of our local MESH Risk Management Consultants, Chris Palmisano. Chris is going to walk us through how to comply with OSHA’s new GHS rules when labeling chemicals stored in secondary containers. Find out a quick tip on avoiding one of the most commonly cited OSHA violations by reading Chris’s straightforward guidance. This article focuses on educating employers and safety managers on the challenges associated with the new Global Harmonization System or (GHS) for classifying chemicals and provides simple solutions for compliance. Compliance is easy when you understand these new changes and how they specifically effect your company and your employees. OSHA announced that in 2013 Hazcom (Hazard Communication) 1910.1200 violations were the second most frequently cited standard of the top 10 violations in workplace compliance inspections.* OSHA publishes their Top 10 list annually to inform employers about commonly cited standards, so they can take steps to comply, identify hazards, protect employees and ultimately avoid citations. Besides training employees on the new GHS (Global Harmonization System) labeling elements, new pictograms, and the new SDS (Safety Data Sheet) format, there are more important challenges to compliance such as workplace labeling that many employers and safety managers may not even realize. The best way to explain how employers comply with the new GHS rules is to first break things down into two categories: 1. Employer responsibilities 2. Manufacturer/distributor responsibilities

If we look at the figure below published by OSHA, it describes the responsibilities of both parties and the dates each must comply with certain changes and/or implementation of GHS programs. This article focuses on employer responsibilities, so let’s start with the December 1, 2013 requirement for employee training. Employers were required to train all of their employees on the new GHS labeling elements, pictograms and newly designed SDS format by December 1, 2013. GHS Labeling The new manufacturer GHS label for chemical containers must have six elements. Employers are required to train employees on these new elements and the new GHS pictograms: 1. Product Identified (Name of the Chemical) 2. Signal words (Danger or Warning or None, depending on the Hazards of the Chemical) 3. Pictograms (Nine different pictures that Display Specific Hazards) 4. Hazard Statements (Physical, Health or Environment Hazards) 5. Precautionary Statements (General, Prevention, Response, Storage & Disposal) 6. Company Information (Manufacturer and/ or Distributor Information) New SDS Format The new SDS has 16 sections. Employers must train employees on the new SDS format. What should also be important to employers and safety managers is the name change. OSHA officially changed the name of the MSDS to SDS. It turns out that this name change gives them an edge during an inspection. As a former OSHA Compliance

Officer, I can tell you that one of the things we always looked for was a prominently displayed MSDS book in the workplace. Today, if a Compliance Officer sees your old MSDS book proudly displayed in the workplace, they know to ask questions about your Hazcom/GHS training programs. Chances are that you are likely a good candidate for Hazcom/GHS citations. However if they see an “SDS” book displayed in your workplace, they immediately know that you are likely up to speed on the new GHS regulations. So a single name change and changing your cover on your old MSDS book to SDS could help in avoiding Hazcom citations. The 16 sections of the New SDS: 1. Identification of the substance or mixture and of the supplier 2. Hazards identification 3. Composition/information on ingredients 4. First-aid measures 5. Fire-fighting measures 6. Accidental release measures 7. Handling and storage 8. Exposure controls/personal protection 9. Physical and chemical properties 10. Stability and reactivity 11. Toxicological information 12. Ecological information (non-mandatory) 13. Disposal considerations (non-mandatory) 14. Transport information (non-mandatory) 15. Regulatory information (non-mandatory) 16. Other information, including date of preparation or last revision Workplace Labeling: THE BIGGER PROBLEM! So, as you can see training employees to meet the December 1, 2013 requirement is relatively easy for employers and safety managers because you only have to teach your employees about the new GHS label and the new SDS. That said, the June 1, 2016 requirement for employers to have a workplace labeling system for secondary containers is a much more challenging task. Here’s why it’s difficult. We are all familiar with the old HMIS (Hazardous Material Identification System) to label workplace containers. We use it whenever we migrate a chemical from its parent container to a secondary workplace container. The problem is that the HMIS number coding system is NOT concurrent with the new GHS Hazard Classification number codes. The two are in fact reversed. If you already have a hard time getting employees to label secondary containers, you now have an even bigger problem. Employees will have a difficult time finding HMIS numbers on an SDS and they may confuse these numbers with the GHS Hazard Classification numbers.

OSHA has stated that employers can use any system they wish for workplace labeling as long as it conveys the hazards of the chemical. Employers must understand that GHS is a Globally Harmonized System for classifying chemicals internationally for trade. The unfortunate truth is that other countries do not use our HMIS system and HMIS ratings for chemicals are not a requirement in any of the 16 sections of the SDS. Employers need to actually consider discarding the old HMIS rating codes and come with a workplace labeling system that is concurrent with GHS label elements. OSHA says that you have until June 1, 2016 to develop a workplace labeling system. A more appropriate workplace label would convey the elements of the GHS labeled parent container, as shown below. Holding on to an antiquated HMIS system is a recipe for potential disaster and certain to be a great way to get someone hurt or receive an OSHA Hazcom citation. Employees will rather not label a secondary container than try to figure out the appropriate hazard class numbers. A workplace label is a much more efficient and safer way to label secondary workplace containers. Employees need only look at the elements of the GHS labeled parent container and they have enough information to properly label the workplace container. In Summary OSHA is determined to cite employers that do not comply with the new Hazcom Standards and GHS. This is evident by Hazcom Violations being the second most commonly written citation by OSHA nationally. Training employees on the new six elements of a GHS label, pictograms and the new 16 section SDS format is easy and should have already been completed in December 2013. If you haven’t trained your employees you are already in violation of the new Hazcom standards. The greater challenge for employers is having a workplace labeling system in place by June 1, of 2016. The old HMIS system is just that, old and out dated. Globally, HMIS is not a requirement on an SDS and serves only to confuse employees, causing them to take the easy ways out. Your workplace labeling system must be easy to use and must convey need to know hazard information that is globally acknowledged to keep employees safe. A more efficient way to stacking accuracy and stability

A

s a single-source provider for filling, palletizing and packaging technologies, BEUMER Group continues to pursue its goal of offering its customers solutions from a single source. Therefore, BEUMER has fundamentally reengineered its high-capacity layer palletizer, BEUMER paletpac. The user now benefits from a better accessibility, a shorter assembly period, higher flexibility and, as a result, lower costs. The BEUMER paletpac is incorporated into high-performance packaging lines to process sensitive and valuable products in a gentle and efficient manner. With the BEUMER paletpac, the intralogistics specialist supplies high-capacity machines, which stack bags filled with bulk material on pallets gently and exactly, layer by layer. The products include cement, mortar, pellets, industrial salts and fertilizers filled in paper, polyethylene or polypropylene bags. Owing to the geometric precision during layer and stack formation, stable bag stacks are formed. Multiple pallet loads created with the BEUMER paletpac can even be stacked one on top of the other to save storage space. BEUMER redesigned the

paletpac to make it even more sustainable, and due to the optimization, it also was able to lower the production costs, which is reflected in the purchase price. Furthermore, the optimized model also brings about a reduction in operating costs. Trimmed to improve efficiency Until recently, the system was equipped with large drives. Now small motors carried out as servo drives are used and optimize the energy consumption needed for the lifting movement. In addition, these motors need less maintenance, further reducing the costs for the user. With regard to the overall structure, BEUMER made various improvements. For starters, there is now better accessibility, and therefore easy cleaning underneath the machine is ensured. Another important modification is that the external frame elements can now be folded, allowing the whole palletizer head to fit into one transport container. The palletizing head doesn’t have to be dismounted and the total amount of containers sent to the customer can be

reduced. This alleviates the transportation costs and shortens the assembly period on-site. The pallet pusher that automatically provides the hoist unit with empty pallets also has been modified by the BEUMER specialists. This included modifying the guides for the pallet side plate, introducing a new lateral guide system, changing the drive performance and decreasing the system width. Now the user can quickly and easily adapt the palletizer to different pallet sizes without the use of tools. The paletpac palletizes bags up to a pack height of 2,400 mm. A multiprogram enables the user to set parameters easily and quickly. The BEUMER paletpac can be provided with a bar-type or clamp-type turning device, or with a newly developed twin-belt turning device to position the filled bags quickly, ensuring their dimensional stability. To enable operators to operate the BEUMER paletpac easily and quickly, the intralogistics specialist has equipped it with the BEUMER Group Human Machine Interface (HMI), an operator panel with an optimized user interface and op-

timized navigation, which creates easily understandable and intuitive interaction, enabling the user to define efficient working sequences. The operator can control the machine safely, independently of prior skills, training and capabilities, thus saving time and money which ensures high economic efficiency. These innovations demonstrate BEUMER Group’s commitment to the total value of ownership (TVO) approach, enabling a company to work efficiently through tailoring, facilities, systems and pertinent production processes to long-term customer use. A product is considered not only from an economic viewpoint, but also from an ecological and social one. This includes, for instance, ergonomic Human Machine Interfaces. This way, operators can describe the effectiveness of their operational investments in a holistic and especially significant way. They are able to determine not only their direct costs, but above all the ‘Total Value’ of the solution to be provided over the whole operating time. Three equally important factors are involved: market development, risk management and sustainability.

Two inductees selected for the Rental Hall of Fame

T

wo rental industry veterans will be recognized for their impact on the industry and become the newest inductees into the Rental Hall of Fame next February. Angus W. Mercer and Allen L. Morehead will be formally inducted during the keynote session at The Rental Show in New Orleans. The American Rental Association created the Rental Hall of Fame in 2000 to foster an appreciation of the historical development of the rental industry and the leaders who have made the industry what it is today. Each year, nominations are accepted to recognize individuals who have made a substantial impact on the industry at the national or international level. The keynote session is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 23, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Here is more on the two newest inductees. Angus W. Mercer Throughout more than 40 years in the rental industry, Angus W. Mercer of Charlotte, N.C., was president of Contractor Service and Rentals (CSR), president of the southeast division of Grace Equip-

ment Co. and chairman of Mercer Equipment Co. By many accounts, Mercer and CSR were one of the first to offer the option to rent rather than buy equipment, beginning in the 1950s. It became a very successful option. Two inductees selected for the Rental Hall of Fame Mercer built CSR to eight stores in North Carolina and South Carolina that generated $21 million in annual rental and sales in 1981, when he sold the company to Grace Equipment. He continued as president of the southeast division, which he increased to 18 locations with more than $60 million in receipts. In 1990, he began Mercer Equipment with his sons-in-law and served as chairman. The company was sold to United Rentals in 1997, when it had annual sales of $14.5 million. Mercer also brought innovation to rental. In 1956, he began using mechanical accounting machines for tracking each individual item in CSR’s rental fleet. The program captured such data as cost,

income, maintenance, utilization and return-on-investment, and served as a management tool. He also required each candidate for employment to go through a testing program, which was a first for the industry. These and several other innovations increased efficiency for the company plus provided better employees, as well as helped shape the rental industry in a way to continue its rapid growth. Allen L. Morehead Allen L. Morehead of Ace Rents in Lancaster, Pa., became involved in the rental industry in 1970, when he began working for T. Charles McCourt – a 2014 Rental Hall of Fame inductee – at Ace Rents. The two soon partnered and ultimately opened six rental stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia, growing the rental industry and providing jobs to many. Morehead also was one of the founders of Rental Service Supply, which later was named RSS Distributors. He has a long history of volunteer involvement, which began soon after he joined the industry at the grassroots level with the Keystone Rental Association

and ARA of Pennsylvania. He became involved at the national level in 1981, when he began the first of three terms that totaled seven years of service on the ARA board of directors through 1998. He also was one of the pioneers of ARA Insurance through his involvement with the development of ARDI, the American Rental Dealers Insurance. Two inductees selected for the Rental Hall of Fame Morehead began another tenure on the ARA board in 2002, when he was elected vice president. He served as senior vice president in 2003, ARA president in both 2004 and 2005 and then as chairman of the board in 2006. He also was on the ARA Foundation board of trustees and was honored with ARA’s Distinguished Service Award and the Region Two Person of the Year award. With a master’s degree in electrical engineering, problem solving comes naturally to Morehead and is a skill he’s utilized throughout his rental career. His calm demeanor kept the progress of ARA moving forward during his extensive years of service on the board.

60 Years of Vacuum Conveying Innovation in the US Industry veteran cites application engineering as main source of pneumatic conveying advancements.

I

nnovation begins with a need.

During the early 1950s in the US, the primary market for pneumatic conveying systems was the plastics industry. Plastics manufacturers needed a solution to the problem of manually loading molding machines that required operators to climb up ladders with buckets or bags of plastic pellets to dump into the hopper. Although most early pneumatic conveying systems developed overseas were positive pressure systems, a handful of US companies began using vacuum cleaner motors as the vacuum power source and rudimentary filtration devices to convey the pellets. When Frank Pendleton, Founder of VACU-MAX, introduced the world’s first venturi driven air-powered industrial vacuum cleaner in 1954 he was satisfying the need for a safe and efficient cleaning system to remove oily dust and lint from around equipment in textile mills; and essentially, the first combustible dust industrial vacuum. The design, reworked from an inventor’s prototype and a modified venturi originally made for a stove, was 3 times as powerful as its electrical counterpart on the market and within a relatively short period of time after its introduction, it was realized that the unit could be modified to effectively convey powders. “We gravitated into the powder handling business rather than plastic pellets,” says Steve Pendleton, President of VAC-UMAX. “We would handle any plastic pellet job with gusto, but our forte, was the powder side of the business because we started out with venturi powered units; and, because our filtration was geared toward powders to begin with.” The venturi-powered units were designed to utilize a cloth bag filter that was more adaptable to dusty materials whereas those first pellet conveying systems utilized filters that consisted of a porous sheet of material that was rigid and not conducive to powder applications, binding the filters instantly. By the late 1950s, Pendleton says, “our representative in Cincinnati, Ohio, Ed Moriarti, was an engineer and a friend of my Dad’s and he actually conceived, on the pneumatic conveying side, a filter shaker that would shake the filter clean of accumulated fines on each conveying cycle. This really gave us a leg up in the powder handling industry.” Today, the conveyor manufacturer uses an automatic pulse jet filter cleaning

system to ensure peak operating performance, but back then, the small receivers that were no more than 4cf didn’t lend themselves to blowing air on the filter because it would quickly blow dust all over the place. Although pneumatic conveying technology was new in the powder handling industry, Pendleton says that convincing customers that this new technology would work for their applications wasn’t difficult. “The way our business operates is that a company would say, ‘look I have this application to do something. I’m loading a blender, or I’m doing this,’ and our response from day one was, as it is today, send us some material and we’ll run it in our test lab and we will tell you if it can be conveyed.” One the first larger activity that the conveyor manufacturer got involved in was at Hercules Powder at the Allegheny Ballistics Labs to convey propellants for one of the rockets at the time. The application was to convey a propellant material from wooden boxes into a large receiver for batching. “We designed a tilting table for the boxes and using the venturi power units, which are very powerful and air operated, we conveyed and handled the product with ease.” The system says Pendleton was typical of their equipment at the time—all the controls were air operated and there were no electric components involved at all, which is important in the propellant business because they are uber conscious about any kind of sparks or spark generation. The company still makes pneumatic control panels, however since VAC-U-MAX is a UL listed panel builder that creates explosion proof control panels in-house, the more common set up in a hazardous environment today would be to put a vacuum receiver with a venturi power unit mounted on it in the hazardous area and then connect tubing to an electronic control panel placed outside the hazardous area. Pendleton says, “the problem with pneumatic timer control panels is that they are very susceptible to dirt or moisture in the air. The pneumatic control panels, as good as they are, are not nearly as predictable and reliable as electric controls. But there is still a need for pneumatic control panels when properly applied.”

The key to any successful application, he says, “is application engineering. When it comes down to it, a lot of what we do is based on know-how and most of our advancements come from doing. Our response today is the same as it was 60 years ago when a customer comes to us with an application. We ask them to send in test material and we set up a system in our test lab that mirrors, as closely as possible, what he wants to do.” Today the conveyor manufacturer tests materials four days out of five. “We have all the formulas, all the books, all the graphs and charts, but a majority of bulk materials have many different configurations, like sugar, and since we have an iron clad performance guarantee we want to be sure something is going to work.” Others now commonly use some of the early technologies pioneered by the manufacturer in the industry, like its early filter technology, but others are proprietary and patented like the company’s Tube Hopper. Bridging of products in the solids han-

dling industry is a big problem so the company invented a vacuum receiver with a tubular design and full opening discharge valve. “Even materials that want to bridge or not flow, for whatever the reason, have a hard time not flowing out of the tubular vacuum receiver,” says Pendleton. Pendleton has no predictions for the future of pneumatic conveying and he expects the industry to advance as it has thus far by a broadening of pneumatic applications and developments that improve performance. “We’ve just celebrated our 60th anniversary and we are in the planning stages for our 120th anniversary luncheon. We plan to be a factor in the industry providing the best solution for handling a product for a long time to come,” says Pendleton. “We started out with the world’s first air operated industrial vacuum cleaner and today we do vacuum conveying, dense phase vacuum conveying, positive pressure conveying, and mechanical conveying because not every application lends itself to pneumatic conveying.”

Tech Talk “Twas the night before Christmas and all through the shop, not an engine was smoking except that damn diesel.”

T

his month’s article will cover basic troubleshooting methods for diagnosing any smoking diesel. First we should consider the difference between the mechanical workings of an LPG engine compared to diesel. The LPG engine revolves around air, fuel, compression and spark where the diesel requires only air, fuel and compression. The diesel’s higher compression creates the heat needed to ignite the diesel fuel. This explains why some diesels may smoke upon cold startup. The heat from the compression is absorbed into the cold engine block and does not completely ignite the fuel. Compression is critical to the operation of a diesel engine and should usually be around 300 to 450 psi. Refer to the engine’s service manual for exact specifications. The LPG engine has spark plugs, a distributor and an LP fuel system. The diesel has a more complex fuel system that revolves around an injection pump. Just as rotating the distributor advances or retards the timing, so does the twisting and turning of the injection pump. However for safety reasons, this should never be done while the engine is running. Alright, enough. Let’s troubleshoot that smoking diesel for the holidays.

Santa’s Smoking Diesel Checklist: White Smoke – this is caused by the burning of coolant. You will actually be able to smell the coolant burning. Causes • Blown cylinder head gasket • Warped cylinder head or engine block deck surface • Cracked cylinder head or engine block

Black Smoke – this is caused by a rich fuel mixture (Either too much fuel or not enough air) Causes • Clogged air filter • Injection pump out of adjustment (check the max fuel stop screw) • Improper or contaminated fuel • Faulty injector

Bluish White Smoke – incomplete combustion Causes • Low operating temperature (Check the thermostat) • Faulty/Stuck open injector • Low compression • Early (advanced) fuel injection pump timing • Injector lines crossed Blue Smoke – burning oil Causes • Worn valve guides • Worn piston rings or glazed cylinder walls

Quick diagnosis methods are pop testing the injectors to check for proper fuel spray. Both wet and dry compression tests to show any loss of compression and direct you towards either the valves or piston rings. If you believe the problem is in the fuel system you can check each cylinder by breaking loose the fuel lines one at a time and observe any change in the engines performance. The line that does not change performance is the cylinder with the problem. These simple tests will help direct you towards the cause of the problem and you can kickoff the New Year minus the smoke.

J.W. Winco, Inc. offers many standard components for the construction of metric T-slot profile systems, utilizing our T-nut assemblies. Explore our full line on our website www.jwwinco.com or contact us with your application requirements.

Maintenance is critical with a diesel engine. Diesels are traditionally operated in outdoor, dusty, and harsh environments. Your standard oil and filter change, fuel filter, and re-adjustment of the valves are all of the important components of routine maintenance. Be sure to address any over fueling problems immediately as it can wash the oil off of the cylinder walls and cause the cylinders to become glazed. It is also good practice to routinely inspect the air filtration system for punctures, cracks, and/or loose hoses. It is commonplace in the reman business to see dusted rings or dirt ingested diesel failures. A well designed diesel engine is one that has an efficient air filtration system. Word of caution, do not assume that an air filter is correct just because it came out of the engine last. Always check to ensure proper seal and fit of the air filter to avoid needing another reman engine this Easter. Like always, inexpensive maintenance can save thousands of dollars in the long run. So although it’s a brief overview, this checklist may be all you need to help figure out why that damn diesel smokes. For any additional Tech Advice, feel free to give us a call at (877) 303-LIFT. We Are One

W

hen we think of culture, I know that many of us don’t think of the American Culture as one we should study or one that is even definable by simple phrases as in other parts of the world. When I moved here in 2003 I dove into the American culture and tried to learn as much as possible about the country which I had chosen to live in. As I settled into life here, I noticed that there was both a sense of community and also a strong sense of individual freedom. These are the best parts of the culture and it was those values that I wanted to encourage in our company – individual freedom with the understanding that true success is only possible with the shared efforts of all of us. How is this possible? There are many ways to influence company culture, at TVH we established values by gathering feedback from employees from around the world. Our values are individual contribution with the core belief that We Are One. We are one company, one culture, built by many individuals with talent and focus and we want our culture to encourage independent thought with success as a community.

We recently kicked off two very successful We Are One events, designed to encourage and promote one of our five company values - spirit, group, power, soul and goal. Each event celebrated the strength TVH demonstrates when we all come together and work as one. The LEGO® build event promoted our Group value. Every department throughout the company received a set of building blocks. Working as a team, each group designed and built a creation specific to TVH, their department or the industry. To promote Spirit, another one of our core company values, we made a video called “TVH is Awesome.” Based on the song “Everything is Awesome!” from the LEGO® Movie, the new version features employees from our US, Canada, and Mexico locations showing their enthusiasm, creativity and how we work together as one. I’d like to end with a quote from one us who spoke about the true spirit of We Are One and the essence of TVH. We Are One is . . . “Everyone working together to achieve and accomplish one goal.” Nicholas Ray, TVH California Location

Advertising Deadline is December 15th

Established in 1998, the Georgia CIO of the Year® Awards is the premier technology executive recognition program of its kind. This annual event honors chief information officers and those in equivalent positions who have demonstrated excellence in technology leadership at Georgia’s top organizations. Award finalists are recognized in six categories: Global, Enterprise, Corporate, Non-Profit / Public Sector, Emerging, and Lifetime Achievement. Musgrave is a finalist in the Global category. He joined Americold in 2011 and has been instrumental in the integration of systems of Americold’s largest acquisition after the company purchased Versacold in 2010. “I am honored to be included among the finalists for this prestigious award, especially considering the rich backgrounds of all the nominees,” said Musgrave.

“The recognition, however, really belongs to the entire supply chain technology team at Americold, and I am proud to dedicate my nomination to this group – the best in the industry.” Musgrave also has continued to drive the evolution of IT platforms at Americold, enhancing significantly the solutions the company provides customers and the platforms on which the temperature-controlled warehouse network operates. Most important, Musgrave’s leadership has transformed Americold’s i-3PL inventory management system – the company’s customer portal for complete visibility, management and reporting of inventory – enabling tremendous differentiation from other providers. The next generation of i-3PL, to be released in the coming months, will further enrich the opportunities for supply chain control for the company’s customers. “Tom is a visionary and an inspiring technology innovator, and we at Americold equally appreciate his abilities as a business leader,” said Fred Boehler, President and Chief Operating Officer of Americold. “He brings an insatiable appetite to initiate efficiency and advancement for our customers, and this dedication and determination drive success across all channels where Americold does business.”

Stop-painting.com explains how to comply with OSHA’s New GHS Rules

S

top-painting.com published an article written by MESH Risk Management Consultant Chris Palmisano that demystifies the process of labeling secondary chemical containers while still complying with OSHA’s new GHS rules. This article focuses on educating employers and Safety Managers on the challenges associated with the new Global Harmonization System or (GHS) for classifying chemicals and provides simple solutions for compliance. Besides training employees on the new GHS (Global Harmonization System) labeling elements, new pictograms, and the new SDS (Safety Data Sheet) format, there are more important challenges to

compliance such as workplace labeling that many employers and Safety Managers may not even realize. OSHA officially changed the name of the MSDS to SDS. As a former OSHA Compliance Officer, Chris explains in the article an easy way to avoid a citation. “Today, if a Compliance Officer sees your old MSDS book proudly displayed in the workplace, they know to ask questions about your Hazcom/GHS training programs. Chances are that you are likely a good candidate for Hazcom/GHS citations. However if they see an “SDS” book displayed in your workplace, they immediately know that you are likely up to speed on the new GHS regulations. So a single name change and changing your cover on your old MSDS book to SDS could help in avoiding Hazcom citations.” OSHA has stated that employers can use any system they wish for workplace labeling as long as it conveys the hazards of the chemical. Employers must understand that GHS is a Globally Harmonized System for classifying chemicals internationally for trade. The unfortunate

truth is that other countries do not use the United States’ HMIS system and HMIS ratings for chemicals are not a requirement in any of the 16 sections of the SDS. Employers need to actually consider discarding the old HMIS rating codes and come with a workplace labeling system that is concurrent with GHS label elements. OSHA says that you have until June 1st 2016 to develop a workplace labeling system. Stop-painting.com’s GHS Secondary Labels are much more efficient and safer way to label secondary workplace containers. Employees need only look at the elements of the GHS labeled parent

container and they have enough information to properly label the workplace container. The author, Chris Palmisano, is a certified Manager of Environment Safety & Health. Chris’s current career in Risk Management Consulting spans over 35 years. Chris was a former Homeland Security Consultant for the US Department of Justice and Department of Defense. He served as a Fire Lieutenant in the Philadelphia Fire Department’s Hazmat Administration Unit, Sergeant in the US Air Force, Safety Consultant for the State of NC, and as a Compliance Officer for OSHA. Since 2005 has been working as a Risk Management Consultant. Chris graduated from North Carolina State University’s MESH Certification Program, where he obtained certification as a Manager of Environmental Safety and Health. *United States Dept. of Labor Website: Osha.gov/Top_Ten_Standards.html (2013, October 25). Paul Laroia to retire from NMHG

N

ACCO Materials Handling Group (NMHG), the parent company of Hyster Company and Yale Materials Handling Corporation, announces that its vice president of aftermarket, Paul Laroia, has indicated plans to retire. Laroia will stay with the company through the end of the year to ensure a smooth transition. As a well-respected industry leader and driving force in the success of the company, Mr. Laroia’s career has been marked by a passion for innovation and a dedication to quality service. He joined Hyster Company in 1970, and by the age of 25, had become the youngest manager in the company, overseeing advertising and sales promotions for the Hyster European Headquarters. In 1980, he transferred to the Portland, Ore., corporate office and in 1984 to the Danville, Ill., facility to manage the company’s parts, service and warranty operations. Later Mr. Laroia became the director of group marketing and Latin American operations at the NMHG America’s Headquarters in Greenville, N.C. Then from 2005-2009, he served as president of Hyster Company, and following a subsequent restructuring, as NMHG’s vice president of aftermarket, his current position. “In his more than 40 years with the company, Mr. Laroia has been a driving force for positive change and continuous improvement, as well as a great source of insight and institutional knowledge” said Colin Wilson, president and chief executive officer, NMHG. “His stellar leadership and vision have helped us achieve the success we enjoy today and set the path

for future innovation.” During his tenure, Mr. Laroia utilized his vast expertise to implement global best practices, effectively engage dealers and suppliers and help foster the development of multiple company leaders. He is the brains behind the Hyster UNISOURCE™ aftermarket parts program, a onestop-shop for forklift parts and accessories, and was integral in the development of the company’s price match and availability guarantee programs. Mr. Laroia has not only displayed a long-term commitment to the company itself, but also as an industry thought leader and contributor. He has served on the board of directors of the Industrial Truck Association (ITA) since 2006, and was part of the board’s executive committee for seven years. Additionally, Mr. Laroia served on the Alliance of Industrial Truck Organization’s management committee from 2009-2013. “Throughout his career, Mr. Laroia has been an advocate of initiatives that have, and will continue to make our industry better, and has been a champion of international dialogue to level the global playing field,” said Brian Feehan, president, ITA. “When called upon, he has served tirelessly in many roles for the good of the industry and association. His valuable input will be missed a great deal.” Mr. Laroia, who graduated with honors from The London School of Economics and holds an MBA from the University of Strathclyde in Scotland, will retire to Palm Beach, Fla., where he will focus on travel, hobbies and spending more time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Ametek Prestolite Power Launches Wireless Battery Identification Device (WBID) To Streamline Warehouse Operations

A

METEK Prestolite Power, a leader in industrial battery charging and fleet management solutions, today began shipping an advanced Wireless Battery Identification Device (WBID) that continually reads and stores information about lift truck batteries. It also announced major updates to DataLink 2, its data analysis software used in conjunction with WBIDs and battery Charger Interface Devices (CIDs). Working together, the WBID and DataLink 2 are designed to improve ware-

house efficiency by gathering data wirelessly, monitoring battery usage and identifying potential problems that could lead to downtime. The new WBIDs provide critical information to extend battery life, solve service issues and help with warranty claims, according to AMETEK Prestolite Power Director Patrick Williams. Motive power batteries can be more easily monitored for voltage, temperature and amp-hour usage using the battery identification device number, voltages, amp-hour sizes and start rates. Williams said the latest competitive advantages to the new WBIDs include: • Six multi-purpose input/output channels to adapt to multiple temperature and level measurements or LED indicators as needed in the application. • All collected data can be stored over the total life of the battery.

• Data communication to the charger can be done over the DC cable without special or auxiliary connectors. • For the first time only one WBID is required for 12-40 cell sizes. • When working together, the WBID and DataLink 2 software will adjust the amp-hour to ensure that charging does not overheat the battery. “Our chargers enable ‘opportunity charging,’” he added, “the concept of leveraging a forklift operator’s break time to recharge battery power and wirelessly report on efficiency, existing power and other key parameters that help a warehouse run smoothly with reduced downtime and significantly less space.” AMETEK’s DataLink 2 software, working in conjunction with the WBIDs and CID, greatly enhances the ability to collect, charge and discharge data from the charger. Updates include a new “kinetic” analyzer tool to import, evaluate and report on data from a WBID. Users can use the data to compare the status of one battery to another for usage, temperature and current.

DataLink 2 and the WBID wireless fleet management system transfers data over the company’s proprietary wireless network that uses a powerful transceiver. Williams said the system doubles the typical communication range between chargers from 1500 feet to 3,000 feet in a normal operating environment. He added that the software is compatible with the company’s most advanced charger controls – the EC2000 for high frequency products, the UC2000 and SCR2000 for SCR products, and the AC2000 for Ferroresonant product lines -- and with Microsoft Windows Vista, 7 and XP operating systems. “By leveraging our technology and taking advantage of the competitive advantages we have in the market with advanced WBIDs, opportunity charging and more, we are setting ourselves apart as a clear leader in battery charging technology,” Williams said. More information about ordering the AMETEK Prestolite Power WBIDs, DataLink 2 and full product line is available at www.prestolitepower.com.

Tips for Implementing Lean Manufacturing Practices

Y

ou may be thinking about implementing lean manufacturing practices in your facility, or may have heard about lean manufacturing and want to know more. Whatever the case may be, these tips for implementing lean manufacturing practices can help to determine whether your manufacturing process can benefit from lean manufacturing techniques, and if so, what is the best way to go about implementing them. Key steps in lean manufacturing implementation include: performing valuestream mapping, optimizing storage configurations, giving workers tools for success, working towards consistency, and continually reassessing what further changes will benefit your process. If you take advantage of these tips for implementing lean manufacturing practices, you can significantly cut wasted time, products, space and money, improve customer and worker satisfaction, and improve quality. If that’s appealing, let’s take a look at how to achieve these goals.

Assess Your Needs You may think that you have an extensive understanding of your manufacturing process, but taking the time to assess the needs of your facility in depth and cut down on waste is the first step in implementing lean manufacturing practices. You may be surprised by what a difference just this step can make! Work with team members from throughout your manufacturing process to determine what parts and tools are needed for current production demands. Assess everything in your production warehouse, and get rid of everything that isn’t currently being used. Depending on the item and your predicted future demands, you may choose to either relocate the item away from production areas, or to dispose of it entirely. Excess stock takes up valuable space in your production facility, slows down manufacturing and can hide production issues. In addition, an important part of assessing your facility’s needs is performing value-stream mapping. This will help you to see what steps are currently being taken in your manufacturing process,

where delays occur, where other waste may come into play, and how to resolve these issues. Value-stream mapping is essential to the streamlining process, and can be used not just to determine the current state of your manufacturing facility, but also to map out an ideal future-state process. Reconfigure Storage Once you have a firm grasp of your facility’s needs, have developed a valuestream map and a future-state map, you can make a plan for how to implement new processes. One of the key aspects of this plan is figuring out how and where to store tools, parts and other items to most effectively use space and time. For example, open shelving often wastes space between shelves and towards the back of each shelf, and therefore is an inefficient storage method for all but the largest, bulkiest items. High-density drawer storage can be used in its place and can dramatically reduce storage footprints. Drawer storage provides for customized subdividing, allowing similar items to be grouped together and every item to have its own clearly labeled space. This cuts down on wasted space and on searching time, enabling workers to locate specific items quickly. Purchasing all new high-density storage units is one option for increasing storage efficiency. This opens up the option for completely customizing your storage spaces, therefore allowing for the most efficient use of space. Another option is to retrofit existing shelving with modular high-density drawer storage inserts, such as Lista International’s Shelf Converter® systems, for highly customized organization. The Lista inserts can retrofit into existing standard 24” deep shelving units, providing higher-density and more easily-organized storage for very small to medium sized items, with the option of leaving existing shelves for large items. Finally, assessing what items need to be stored nearest to production areas and what items are best stored away from these areas will increase efficiency of production. Items that see the highest use traffic should be stored where they are used, while lower-traffic items and those that are bulky and in the way of production should be stored farther away. Set Workers Up For Success Workers who are comfortable in their workspace are more likely to be successful and productive than those who feel uncomfortable. Factors that come

into play in worker comfort include cleanliness, accessibility, safety, and ease of use of working environments. Clean environments are more enjoyable to work in, and can lead to improved worker morale. Moreover, clean environments – that is, environments free from spills, dust, airborne particles, and toxic or irritating substances – are safer workplaces for everyone. Making sure that workspaces are clean should be one of the top priorities of a lean manufacturing process, and is easier to maintain when storage, workspaces, and workflow are streamlined. The above-mentioned accessible, efficient storage solutions also have the potential to improve worker experience by cutting down tiresome, frustrating search times. In addition, work stations that include storage for the most frequentlyused parts and tools are the best way to increase employee comfort and productivity simultaneously. Flexible workstations that can be adjusted to individual workers are especially useful, like the Lista International Align® AdjustableHeight Workstations, which fit into nearly any manufacturing setting and increase employees’ comfort and productivity. Be Consistent and Continually Reassess Of course, these lean manufacturing practices will only bring about the desired results if they are implemented consistently. Not only does a workstation or storage area have to start out clean and organized and a process plan streamlined, but they need to remain that way. Ensuring that workers at all levels are invested in the lean manufacturing process and are accountable for maintaining the environment is crucial. In addition, you will need to adapt and change things along the way. Be sure to stay on top of how efficient the workflow is, how well practices are being implemented, and determine whether changes need to be made. Continuous improvement is one of the main tenets of lean manufacturing, and with good reason. These tips, and all initial lean manufacturing practices, can only serve as a starting point for streamlining your manufacturing process and eliminating waste. Once lean manufacturing practices are implemented, you should continue to perform value stream mapping, identify areas where improvements can occur, plan for the future, and execute these plans. Through a continued willingness to evaluate new solutions, you will ensure that your practices, efficiency, and process flow continually improve.

ARA to recognize members for their service at The Rental Show

T

he American Rental Association (ARA) recognizes individuals each year for outstanding service to the association and the rental industry. Here are those who will be honored at The Rental Show 2015 in New Orleans. Distinguished Service Award The Distinguished Service Award recognizes continuing service to the rental industry at the international, national, state and local levels, and is the highest volunteer recognition award given by ARA after the Rental Hall of Fame. Doron Broadfoot of The Rent-It Store in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, receives this year’s award in recognition of his longtime service to ARA, of which he’s been a member since 1975, the ARA Foundation and the Canadian Rental Association (CRA). He continues to be an instrumental part of all three associations with his long-term service. Broadfoot has been active in CRA for many years, serving on numerous committees and boards and also assisted with regional trade shows in his home province of Saskatchewan and other provinces. He became active at the national level for ARA in 2000, when he was elected Region 10 Director. Since then he’s served on many ARA committees and task forces, including The Rental Show Task Force. In 2009, Broadfoot joined the ARA Foundation board as a trustee and will complete his second term at the end of 2014. He was Foundation board chair in 2011-2012 and serves as a Rental Advisory Program coach for the Foundation, counseling many others and especially sharing his expertise to others who have suffered fires in their businesses – something that happened at his own business several years ago. He’s also been a strong donor to the Foundation and has received the Foundation’s 1976 Club Award and James Keenan Commemorative Award. Meritorious Service Award The Meritorious Service Award recognizes exemplary leadership in a defined area of service, such as work on a national committee, special project or service activity. ARA of Virginia is this year’s recipient. In 2014, the ARA of Virginia board of directors orchestrated an effort to make theft of services, previously a civil matter, into a crime in the state. Three of the state association directors – Doug Jones, Joel Theros and Bruce Goodson – worked with their local chambers of commerce and connected with key legislative members in Virginia, which

enabled them to successfully get a theft of services bill passed and signed by the governor of Virginia. As of July 1, 2014, theft of services is a criminal offense in the state. The law provides that a person found guilty of fraudulent conversion of leased property can be required to pay restitution, including any reasonable loss in revenue due to the inability to rent the equipment while it was out of inventory. The law is a success story for Virginia, and one more step toward strengthening theft of services legislation nationwide to benefit all of the rental industry. Special Service Award The Special Service Award honors a rental industry supplier who has made an outstanding contribution to the industry and ARA. This year’s recipient is John Fuchs, general manager of Anchor Industries in Evansville, Ind. Fuchs is a 25-year veteran of Anchor Industries, which has been an ARA associate member since 1974 and will be exhibiting at The Rental Show for the 41st year in 2015. He has been actively involved in ARA on many committees and task forces, including the ARA Insurance and Exhibitor Advisory committees and the Party and Event Services Shared Interest Group. He’s also been involved at the state level, participating in the reorganization of ARA of Indiana. He was honored for that work as the Region Five Person of the Year in 2013. Fuchs also has been an advocate of Events & Tents, ARA’s educational program for party and special event rental held annually at The Rental Show, and has taken a lead role in Anchor Industries’ long-standing sponsorship for the program. He’s also shared his knowledge as a speaker for Events & Tents as well as other ARA programs and state association events.

CNC Retrofit for Short Runs and High Quality Automation provides enhanced productivity for precision machine shop

W

hen pundits and publications talk about American manufacturing, they’re usually focused on huge companies: the Big Three auto manufacturers, whether major tech companies are reshoring, or how aerospace and renewable energy could create more jobs. These big names can create some catchy headlines, but the majority of manufacturers in the U.S. aren’t international corporations or global conglomerates. They’re small or midsize companies, such as Lincoln Park Boring Co. in Romulus, Michigan. These midsize manufacturers have very different concerns than their larger contemporaries. While they’re just as focused on quality, they also have to place a higher priority on cost efficiency. It’s essential that smaller manufacturers make the most out of each employee’s efforts and each dollar spent. This is why CNC (computer numerical control) retrofits and remanufacturing can provide an excellent solution for small and midsize machine shops. Automation provides advantages for throughput, precision, and employee comfort, while turning to a retrofit rather than a brand-new machine can save companies hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs. These benefits were recently demonstrated when Lincoln Park Boring contracted Konecranes Machine Tool Service (MTS) to remanufacture one of their horizontal floor-type boring mills. The resulting machine will deliver a range of improved capabilities, including an automated option that will improve efficiency while preserving the company’s impeccable reputation for accuracy. Quality That Sells Itself “I always explain to people, ‘We make the parts for the machines that make the parts’” says Rick Yesue, President of Lincoln Park Boring. “We work on items like machine bases, columns, frames, and tables for some of the industry’s most reputable OEMs and machine tool build-

ers.” This business, which was founded by Yesue’s father and is now owned and actively operated by him and his siblings Gary and Nancy, has been running for 57 years and counting, with a customer base that spans across the United States and into Europe. “Aerospace, automotive, locomotive, mining – you name it, we’ve got experience with it,” continued Yesue. Though known primarily for its large, heavy machining, the company also offers capabilities for smaller work. Services include vertical and horizontal machining, vertical turning and polishing, Blanchard grinding, assembly, and laser inspection. Regardless of the size or scope of the project, quality remains paramount. “We’re a small company,” continued Yesue, “We don’t even really have salesmen, so we rely on the quality of the work to sell itself.” Much of their business comes from repeat customers or referrals from past customers, so high satisfaction and word-of-mouth are crucial to Lincoln Park Boring’s viability. “We initially approached Konecranes MTS about one of our horizontal floor-type boring mills,” explained Yesue, “This is a machine model from the late ‘50s that we’ve been using since 1970, and it’s been very good to us, but by 2012 we were really struggling to find replacement parts for it. In addition, this was a manual machine, and so it required a tremendous amount of skill and labor from the operator.” Konecranes MTS was recommended to Yesue by a long-time contact in the industry, James D. Foust, Large Machine Product Manager at VMC Technologies, Inc. On the strength of this recommendation, Lincoln Park Boring invited Konecranes MTS to make a proposal. The Argument for Automation “We really jumped at the chance to take on this project,” explained Harold Schoch, Director of Sales at Konecranes MTS. “Lincoln Park Boring has such a strong reputation with machine tool builders and OEMs. We knew that this would be a great opportunity to engage in a real partnership and leverage the customer’s expertise to their advantage.” After listening to Lincoln Park Boring’s concerns, Konecranes MTS proposed a CNC control retrofit using a FANUC 0i-MD CNC system. “One of the reasons that machines like this are such good candidates for a retrofit is because of their enormous size,” explained Schoch.

“The machine is already seasoned, cured cast-iron, so it has great dampening characteristics and stability needed for machining large components. A machine of this size, with this work envelope, would be incredibly expensive to purchase brand-new. With a CNC retrofit and state-of-the-art technology used in the remanufacturing process you’re looking at a very reasonable value that will still be competitive with any of the new machines of similar size on the market today.” Automation was a huge part of the benefits of the new control. As mentioned above, the manual nature of the work on the mill was very labor-intensive. “The operator has to set these large parts up, move the machine into position, and then conduct a large number of redundant checks throughout the process to ensure that the setup hasn’t changed,” explained Schoch, “From a throughput standpoint, all this extra work also means that it takes more time to machine each part. With this retrofit, Lincoln Park Boring will have a state-of-the-art CNC with AC digital servo motors, drives and external scales that will position all the slides very accurately.” “The control they offered us was pretty unique,” agreed Yesue. “It will allow us to switch between manually operating the machine and letting the machine run automatically. For most of our projects on this mill, we are only working on one or two parts. When we’re able to automate some of the steps, we can be much more efficient with our time.” “The FANUC 0i-MD also allows us to save all the information from a job, so when we get a similar part, we can simply alter the existing programs and get to work much faster,” he continued. “This should reduce our time on a number of parts. In addition, once the mill is up and running again, we’re going to have a lot more flexibility as to which machines can work on which jobs. So if we get a rush on something, or a customer requests something very specific, we’ve got choices as to how to get it done in the space we have available.” In addition, since the control came from FANUC, it included extra value. “Going with a FANUC America CNC system gives them reliability that is unparalleled in the industry,” explained Schoch, “Not only does the 0i-MD have the best MTBF available (32 years), FANUC America also offers a 25-year replacement part availability and support commitment for their CNCs in order to maximize the customers investment security and minimize their total cost of ownership. There is no other control manufacturer in the industry that provides that type of trusted commitment.”

Installation Since Lincoln Park Boring is a precision machine shop, they were able to make a number of the components involved in the remanufacture of their Cincinnati Gilbert HBM themselves such as the manufacture of a new saddle and precision machining of the column ways. Because of Lincoln Park Boring’s extensive experience in machining with installing and aligning precision ways for a variety of machine tool OEMs, their team assumed this responsibility on the Cincinnati Gilbert X-axis beds. Additionally, Konecranes MTS provided the design and drawings for Lincoln Park Boring to manufacture the servo motor mounts and ball screw support bearing housings. “With this remanufacture and control retrofit, the sum of all the components really was greater than the whole,” said Schoch, “We generated the mechanical design and mechanical drawings, and Lincoln Park Boring produced many of the vital parts. Their input and expertise were invaluable to the success of the installation. Gary and Rick Yesue have been in the industry for decades, and it shows; they asked a lot of illuminating questions and pushed our team to produce the perfect solution.” For Lincoln Park Boring, producing these components themselves not only contributed to their confidence in the project, but significantly reduced the related costs. Looking Forward The retrofit is due to be completed by the end of September, beginning of October and the CNC-capable boring mill is set to serve an important role in Lincoln Park Boring’s shop. “Our reputation is built on quality,” said Yesue, “Part of that commitment to quality is staying at the forefront of the industry and keeping up-to-date with what’s happening in the market. This newly refitted mill brings us to the cutting edge of available technology, and will help us to serve our customers more quickly and accurately.” Working with Lincoln Park Boring was also eye-opening for Konecranes MTS. “I work with customers of all sizes,” summarized Schoch, “and when I’m involved with some of the larger companies, it can be easy to zero in on their concerns and assume that they apply to the entire industry. But 80% of the manufacturing in this country is done by companies the size of Lincoln Park Boring. As a machine tool services company, it’s essential for us to keep in mind the driving and motivating interests of these smaller customers. We’ve got to keep our eye on the target.”

New Generation Oz Packings most forgiving under harsh conditions

INVISTA’s TECGEN® brand, an innovative manufacturer of flame-resistant (FR) fabric and garments, introduces a new collection tailored specifically for a woman’s build to help eliminate the inconvenience and hazard of wearing poorly fitted FR apparel on the job. The TECGEN® brand now offers solutions to accurately fit women in comfortable, breathable and functional FR apparel that incorporates the conisistency and uniformity of existing FR garments on the market. “Outfitting women in unisex and male garments can raise safety concerns and often be uncomfortable for workers, which can decrease productivity,”´ said Sherryl Stoner, TECGEN® Customer Service Manager of Inside Sales Quality Assurance.

Flexpipe Industries announces the arrival of ALUX, a new product made of aluminium alloy with its surfaces anodized. This structural system of pipes and connectors allows companies to build by themselves some modular solutions like racks, carts, flowracks and workstations. ALUX is light, esthetic, precise, conductive (ESD) and can be used with our regular Flexpipe products. This 28 mm tubular system is a less expensive alternative to other squared aluminium profiles such as BOSCH, T-SLOT or 80-20.

Many packings have been replaced by mechanical seals. But not all packings can be completely replaced by mechanical seals, as packings are still the most reliable seal arrangement for use under rough environments, for instance in slurry pumps. The Oz Seals complete standard range of new generation packings provides improved sealing performance, long service life and environmental protection against dirt, slurry, dust, chemicals and high temperatures. These requirements, along with improved working conditions and increased operational safety are of fundamental importance to the sealing of valves, centrifugal pumps and high pressure plunger pumps.

Suitable for holding, locating, stopping, and mounting objects outdoors, these designs can meet a wide range of assembly, application, design, and cost requirements.

According to a new industry overview from Stertil-Koni, the increased heat generated by the growing use of electric-hybrid and compressed natural gas (CNG) engines in commercial vehicles is leading to a transformational shift in heavy duty lifting. The stakes are high and operating costs for transits, municipalities and fleets could move even higher. The new greener engines typically run up to 50% hotter than conventional engines. Combined with the typical road grime that accumulates on the undercarriages of these “green” commercial vehicles, engine life can be unnecessarily and dramatically cut short. Lifting systems that are engineered to be water resistant permit technicians to pressure wash commercial vehicle undercarriages in a safe, efficient and operator-friendly manner.

MCFA introduces new electric pneumatic tire lift truck series

ASSA ABLOY door approved Club Car introduces to resist hurricane strength VersAttach™ bed-based wind pressure attachment system

Mitsubishi Caterpillar Forklift America Inc. (MCFA) introduced the new 7,000 lb. model capacity to its Jungheinrich large electric pneumatic tire lift truck series. Featuring advanced AC technology for increased performance and productivity, the new EFG 535k-S50 series features industryleading lift speeds and increased energy efficiency. “We’re excited to offer this new, Jungheinrich smaller capacity electric pneumatic tire lift truck model in North America,” said Steve Rogers, senior product marketing consultant for MCFA. “The EFG 535k-S50 series is another example of Jungheinrich’s commitment to designing warehouse products that achieve industryleading performance and productivity.” Mitsubishi Caterpillar Forklift America Inc. 713/365-1000 www.jungheinrich-lift.com.

ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems TKO VertiCool® Door with Wind Load Package has received the Notice of Approval from Miami-Dade County for High Velocity Hurricane Zones. The TKO VertiCool door from ASSA ABLOY Entrance Systems is designed to work in conjunction with a vertical storing dock leveler. While the primary benefit of the TKO VertiCool is energy efficiency, facilities along the coastline and some inland areas have additional concerns - hurricane force winds and tropical storms. In order to acquire the hurricane zone approval* the TKO VertiCool door underwent a series of stringent tests to ensure it withstands pressures of +52 and -52 pounds per square foot, enough to remain intact through straight-line winds and hurricanes.

Facilities and grounds managers, parks and recreation professionals, industrial workers, resort managers and others often use bungee cords, ropes, zip ties … even tape to organize and protect the equipment in the beds of their utility vehicles. This is inefficient, time-consuming and unattractive. Club Car’s innovative VersAttach bedbased attachment system for its new Carryall line is making that kind of “instant engineering” unnecessary. “VersAttach is a configurable, removable, track-based bed attachment system for our Carryall utility vehicles, street-legal Carryall® LSVs (low speed vehicles) and Transporter™ transport vehicles,” says Ross Lyons, product manager, utility platform.

Cabka-IPS grows its family of strong container pallets

SMARTRAC www.smartrac-group.com

The 300TT (Tunnel/Tugger) SmartCart AGC provides a flexible and affordable way to move products on an assembly line or to transport goods throughout a plant or warehouse with the capability to tunnel under carriers. The 300TT SmartCart AGC is capable of towing up to 4,000 pounds and carrying up to 2,400 pounds. This model is available with a 1-1/4ʺ diameter pop-up pin that allows trailers to be towed from underneath, commonly referred to as ‘tunneling.’ This allows for automatic coupling and decoupling of trailers, increasing flexibility within the assembly or warehouse operation.

Cabka is adding the Endur S7 and C7.2 to its product range. The pallets are characterized by their square size, a robust design, their impact resistance and their load capacity of 1,250 kg on high racks. Both are used to store FIBCs, flexible intermediate bulk containers, also called big bags, in high-bay warehouses. The difference between the two pallets is their size. The C7.2, with container dimensions of 1,140 x 1,140 mm, was developed for transport in ISO containers, the S7 is available in the special dimensions of 1,200 x 1,200 mm – allowing you space for six module units (600 x 400 millimeters) per location.

SMARTRAC has launched its new ON METAL TAG at the CARTES SECURE CONNEXIONS 2014 tradeshow in Paris. Being just 600 μm thick, this printable tag is currently the thinnest UHF tag for difficult surfaces on the market. Due to its unique features, ON METAL TAG is particularly well suited for demanding application areas such as industrial steel pallets, automotive parts and water and paint pails. SMARTRAC’s ON METAL TAG is intended for tagging metal objects and surfaces, as well as challenging non-metal objects. The tag’s thin, soft and flexible structure ideally suits curved and flat surfaces, and provides converters with huge opportunities to create appealing solutions for end-users.
