High Traction
Polyurethane Tires
Grip... Grab... & Go!
When Rubber isn’t quite right, and Polyurethane isn’t right, Tmax is just right. Tmax has a higher load capacity than rubber and will provide better traction in cold, damp environments than a standard polyurethane tire. Indoor and outdoor application tough will not pick up debris and is non-marking.

Industry News Delta-Q introduces new battery chargers at ProMat 2015 Delta-Q Technologies, a leader in battery charging solutions for electric drive vehicles and industrial machines, today announced its exhibition plans for ProMat 2015. The company will introduce the Delta-Q QuiQTM 1500 Battery Charger for electric burden carriers and utility vehicles, and provide fitment and integration demonstrations for the Delta-Q IC650 Charger in Class 3 lift truck designs. Delta-Q will display Class 3 pallet truck battery trays from leading battery manufacturers that rely on the IC650 Charger as an on-board charging solution. Visitors can see the fitment of the compact IC650 and learn how to better integrate an on-board charger into their electric lift truck designs. Delta-Q’s experts will also provide demonstrations of the CAN bus communication features of the IC650. CAN bus integration between the charger and other components, such as battery management systems or motor controllers, provide superior machine diagnostics and servicing, and the safe use of lithium batteries. Later in 2015, Delta-Q will introduce the next IC Series charger, broadening its offering for on-board lift truck chargers to categories such as ride-on pallet jacks. Lift truck manufacturers are invited to booth 4812 to discuss how future Delta-Q products could fit their product roadmap. Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) choose the IC650 Charger because of its durability for on-board applications. When
mounted on-board, the sealed IC650 can tolerate vibration, shock, dirt and fluids, and has been tested to meet an expected 8-year service life. For users, that equates to high machine readiness and uptime, and lower charger replacement costs. Each IC650 Charger comes with pre-loaded battery charging profiles built for the leading battery brands and models, with the profiles undergoing extensive testing to ensure battery performance and longevity. An on-board charger provides the convenience of plugging a machine into the nearest electrical outlet. The QuiQ 1500 is a higher power version of the original QuiQ 1000 that is found in many electric utility vehicles used in material handling. The QuiQ 1500 allows users to charge existing battery packs up to 30 percent faster than the QuiQ 1000 or equip machines with a bigger pack and still meet a 5- or 8-hour charging time requirement. The QuiQ 1500’s compact design matches the exact dimensions and mounting configuration of the existing QuiQ 1000, allowing swift replacement of any existing QuiQ charger. With a standard North American 110V AC power source, the QuiQ 1500 provides 1200 watts of output power, and at 220 or 230 VAC, 1500 watts of output power. The new charger will be available in 48V and 72V models. Sample units will be available in April 2015, with full production beginning in June 2015. www.delta-q.com

Industry News Big Joe gears up after strong showing at ProMat 2015 After hosting the largest exhibition in the history of the brand, Big Joe is excited to report a strong response from the attendees of ProMat 2015. The Big Joe showcase which featured the ability to test drive a number of new machines on the show floor drew strong crowds which has led to scores of immediate requests for field demonstrations according to the company. “We couldn’t be more pleased with the response, the demand for our products coming out of the show has been tremendous”, said President of Big Lift LLC Dan Rosskamm. With over 2,500 sq ft of interactive displays and over 16 new models since the last ProMat in 2013, the Big Joe showcase experienced heavy traffic and interest from end users and competitors alike. “This show marks a clear return of our brand to a period of rapid innovation and it’s great to do it here in Chicago where we got our start”, said Bill Pedriana Director of Sales of Big Lift LLC. “With so much changing in the supply chain now to deliver more items to consumers faster, equipment needs to change too. We are working hard to lead the way with small machines designed for what’s happening now and what’s coming next”, said Pedriana. Of particular interest at ProMat was the ability to test drive several Big Joe Joey series vehicles that are being developed to pick and transport a high number SKUs from small spaces. The machines proved to be very easy and intuitive to drive for attendees, while offering considerable capability for a relatively low cost machine. “With much of the talk at the show focused on automation, robotics
and other capital intensive solutions, Big Joe is here to show people that there is another way”, continued Pedriana. The Big Joe brand is known for a keep it simple philosophy they pioneered in April of 1951, when Big Joe introduced their first product to the world at the Materials Handling Exhibition in Chicago’s International Amphitheater – the model 14. “With more and more companies in ecommerce, and multichannel or omnichannel distribution these days, there is a move to smaller warehouses closer to where consumers live in order to offer huge selections of goods and same day delivery. We are focused on providing new machines that can support this kind of distribution all the way from a warehouse rack to a store shelf or a person’s front door if need be”, said Pedriana. At ProMat, Big Joe also had several new types of delivery products on display built to handle a number of half pallets, carts, and beverage skids based on successes they have had recently with large North American retailers and distributors. Surrounding the display was the messaging of “Equipment made for what’s next.” Which was appropriate for both the show and where Big Joe seems to be focused. www.bigjoeforklifts.com

Creamers Corner A sweeper’s friend: the side brush Have you ever walked past a sweeper and noticed the side brushes were mashed to the floor and you think to yourself “that doesn’t look right!” Well, that’s because it isn’t. I recently had a conversation with a sales representative on this very topic. He was told that the side brush was mashed to the ground because the brush bristles were not strong enough and needed a stiffer bristle side brush. They were using a poly and needed nylon to stand up straight. In our conversation I explained that even a stiffer bristle brush would do this as well, that in fact, the problem is in the adjustments of the side brush. Keep in mind, the task of the side brush is to move the debris in front of the sweeper, whereas the main broom will deposit into the hopper. Of course, the other function of the side broom is to get up close to the edge of the aisle. For the outdoor sweeper, another function of the side brush is to get right up to the gutters. Hence, another name for the brush is a “gutter broom” or “curb broom.” A good side brush has a “wear life” depending on three points:
1. The correct side broom angle adjustment The angle adjustment is controlled with a stop bolt. This stop bolt is located at the top front of the side broom arm (under the spring). To increase the angle of the side broom, loosen the jam nut and turn the stop bolt counter-clockwise. Be sure to retighten the jam nut back down once the adjustment is made. Adjust this so that half of the bristles are making contact with the surface.
2. The side broom height “wear” adjustment The height of the side broom is adjusted with the use of a stop bolt located at the lower rear of the curb broom arm. As the side broom wears it will be necessary to lower the arm. To lower the side broom loosen the jam nut on the stop bolt. Turn the stop bolt in a counter-clockwise direction. Check the side broom for proper contact and retighten the jam nut.
3. The proper side broom lift cable adjustment This adjustment is made at the cable clevis attached to the side broom assembly. It controls the height of the side broom in the “Raised” position. This adjustment must be made with the hopper fully lowered. • Pull the side broom lever into the “Raised” position. • Loosen the locknut on the threaded rod at the clevis. • Turn the threaded rod in or out to set the side broom in the maximum raised position. • Secure the cable adjustment by tightening the locknut. • Remember, when that sweeper is not in use, raise the side broom along with the main broom to maintain the integrity of these brooms.
THE AKRO-MILS ADVANTAGE See how Akro-Mils’ industry-leading products — including our 6-compartment System Bin – can add efficiency to your storage, organization and material handling applications! Made in the USA.
800.253.2467 akro-mils.com ©2015 Akro-Mils/Myers Industries, Inc. #AKM484
Finally, when the day comes to replace that broom, the bristle should be approximately 3" (7.62 cm) or less. Any longer than that you still have some lift left. Also, for those of you with sweepers that have dual side brooms, ditto on the opposite side! As always thanks for reading Creamer’s Corner. You can e-mail me at creamerscorner@hi-gear.com

Industry News Trelleborg launched Pit Stop Line Tires at ProMat 2015 Trelleborg Wheel Systems announced the US launch of its new Pit Stop Line Tires at ProMat 2015. The Pit Stop Line feature for tires is the latest innovation for the Materials Handling Industry; this revolutionary solution answers one of the industry’s most critical questions – how to know, with 100% certainty, when a forklift tire is worn out and needs replacing. Ydo Doornbos, Managing Director Trelleborg Wheel Systems Americas, Inc., commented: “We are very excited to introduce this innovation, which we believe delivers exceptional value to customers, at North America’s leading Materials Handling Show.” “Solid tires are often replaced with up to 25% of their tread remaining simply because people are unaware that tread depth has nothing to do with tire life. Not only does this misconception cause a great amount of wastage, but it also costs companies thousands of dollars every year through unnecessary tire replacement and machine downtime.” “Pit Stop Line Tires feature a highly visible orange line embedded into the tire. This indictor is designed to reveal itself across the surface of the tire when it reaches the point where it should be replaced, thereby ensuring that tires are never replaced either too early or too late. Replacing tires too early costs you money, replacing too late can have profound safety implications.”
This revolutionary innovation also helps improve machine uptime and service planning. With the Pit Stop Line appearing 100 hours or 5-15 working days before the tire needs replacing, operators are able to plan their tire changes in advance, avoiding unplanned downtime. www.trelleborg.com

Become the Exception Lessons from a blind man Mike Marchev Recently I was asked where I get my ideas for articles, blog posts and webinar fodder. The answer is “everywhere.” “Everyday.” All you have to do is keep your eyes and ears open and be receptive to worldly input. Such was the case yesterday. I received a GREAT reminder from a blind man. Not a blind man, but a blind man … a guy who sells blinds. We spotted his truck out in front of our condo and since my wife has already begun kicking new kitchen window treatments around in her mind, we called over the rail and asked the gentleman to stop by for a measurement before he left town. He was well spoken … cleanly attired in jeans and a short sleeve button-down shirt. He extended his hand promptly with his name to follow and a favorable first impression was in the bank. He measured. He took notes. He was history within 5-minutes, but not before promising to get us a number we could chew on early the following morning. A few minutes after nine this morning my phone rang. True to his word, it was Dave The Blind Man with a quote and an invitation to call back with any questions. He simply did as he said he would. I liked that. If I were a betting man, I would bet along the lines of new blinds for the Marchev household before too many more full moons. The lessons here are numerous. 1. I was clearly a “shopper.” Shoppers are good things. I invited the guy into my home, and he did not shoot himself in the foot. I was already
thinking of blinds. He did not have to sell me anything. He had every opportunity to screw things up. He did not. 2. First impressions are important. Clean, polite, thorough, knowledgeable. Bright. Brief & Gone. You don’t ever want to over-do your stay. People are busy. 3. You never know when you might be called upon for a measurement. Dress and act accordingly. He had no idea I was watching. A poor initial visual and he woould not have had a chance. People are always watching. Consider yourself warned. 4. Call people back if you say you will. Strike while the iron is hot. If you can’t do it … don’t say it. If you say it … do it. I would hope he has me on his follow-up list. There are probably more lessons to be learned from the Blind Man, but let it suffice to say that if you keep your eyes open and you are ready to pursue opportunities when they present themselves, (on their terms) you too just might become a success worth writing about. NEWS FLASH: My River Cruising Sales Kit in a Box is now ready for complimentary distribution thanks to the support I received from AMAWaterways. It has received “wave” reviews during BETA Testing. Ask … and you shall recieve. mike@mikemarchev.com Yes, I know I wrote “wave.” Mike Marchev is a marketing humorist who has the skill to motivate. He shares his personal experiences and lessons in a fun, light and refreshing fashion through his monthly articles. Learn more about Mike at www.marchev.com.

Industry News Don’t let these financial blunders leave your wallet empty Financial literacy month is a good time to get your fiscal house in order. To err is human, but when mistakes affect your pocketbook it’s not exactly divine. Don’t feel alone if you’ve committed a financial blunder, though. Two-thirds of Americans have made a significant money mistake somewhere along the way, says Jim Chilton, founder and chief executive officer of the non-profit Society for Financial Awareness (www. sofausa.org). Since April is National Financial Literacy Month, this is a good time for anyone to pledge to do a better job handling money, says Chilton, whose organization’s mission is to “eliminate financial illiteracy, one community at a time.” SOFA does that by conducting free workshops and seminars for corporations, small businesses, government agencies, community colleges, libraries, churches or organizations. “One thing I always tell people is that you can’t let your emotions get in the way when you are trying to meet your financial goals,” Chilton says. “When it comes to finances, there is always going to be at least a little uncertainty.” But he says people can go a long way toward financial stability if they avoid these common blunders:

• Living without a ‘net.’ Bad things happen in life, even to the best people who are trying to do the right things. That’s why you need to set aside savings that will serve as an emergency fund in case you suddenly have major medical problems or lose your job, Chilton says. He recommends a six to 12-month cushion that would cover your mortgage, groceries, utilities and the other necessities of day-today living. • Failing to check credit reports. More than 70 percent of credit reports contain some sort of error, Chilton says. Meanwhile, identity theft is on the rise. You should check your credit reports annually to make sure you are not a victim. • Giving little thought to retirement. Many people fail to properly prepare for retirement. If you think Social Security will take care of you, think again. Social Security is designed as supplemental income, not something that can replace your entire paycheck, Chilton says. You need to plan and save to make sure you can lead the lifestyle you want in your later years. • Racking up credit card debt. Credit seems to rule, but cash should be your real king, Chilton says. Americans are carrying more than $800 billion in credit card debt, he says. Making a conscious effort to use cash will help wean you off your reliance on plastic. “If you are struggling with credit card debt, you need to start making a plan to get rid of that debt,” he says. • Seeking advice in the wrong places. Uncle Felix may mean well, but he’s not necessarily the ideal person to offer you advice on the stock market. A trained professional is your best bet, Chilton says. Sure, word of mouth can be helpful, but it can be equally hurtful. Before you pick someone to help you with investments, though, do your homework because you want someone with a good reputation, Chilton says. Check with the Better Business Bureau and do a Google search to see what else you can learn. • Trying to do too much, too quickly. Financial problems that took years to create aren’t going to be fixed overnight, Chilton says. So ease into your new financial plan. Instead of a dramatic overhaul that could leave you frustrated, try to make small changes that will lead to larger commitments. “Even as we get older and presumably know more, we are still bound to make a misstep here or there,” Chilton says. “We simply can’t know it all, especially when it comes to our finances. “But if we realize our limitations, we can at least learn to make fewer mistakes and do a better job of setting and meeting the goals we have for our money.” Jim Chilton is the founder and chief executive officer for the Society for Financial Awareness, or SOFA, a non-profit public benefit corporation with a mission to provide financial education across America. SOFA conducts free financial workshops and seminars to individuals, companies, and organizations on such topics as “Getting Fiscally Fit,” “Financial Blunders,” “Exploring Your Options for a Quality Retirement” and “Solving Debt.” Chilton is a San Diego, Calif., native and alumnus of San Diego State University. After college, he became a high school teacher and coach, but later joined the financial services industry. After achieving a desirable level of success, Chilton felt the need to do more for the community and in 1993 founded SOFA.

Health Nudge A Year in Review By Bonnie Steer
It’s been a year since this column first started to encourage employees and employers to initiate or expand their healthy lifestyles. Also during the course of the past year, hopefully it’s broaden your idea of health and wellness to more than just diet and exercise, and you’ve gotten some practical tips along the way. Here’s a summary of what we’ve discussed:
Express gratitude and find joy.
Start small.
Offer opportunity.
Workplace wellness is trending, but each business is different and there’s no “one size fits all”. Start with what you know and make it easy for everyone to participate. For example: break time walking groups, a designated fruit day, or a lunch and learn on a health topic. Test the waters slowly, get input from employees, and be okay if some things flop.
Fitness challenges. People loved to be challenged and to work on their health. Walking challenges, weight loss/maintaining challenges, sport leagues and even team building exercises offer great opportunities for people to challenge themselves and be part of a bigger team. There are lots of options, so you should be able to find one to fit your company culture.
Be gracious to employees and find the good things at work that are around you. Create a winning attitude by learning how to come back from mistakes and being positive. Be involved with the work around you, respect others and notice the importance of everyone’s work. A change in culture can start with just one person. Be transparent and make everyone a part of the big picture. Allow employees to own their projects, and give them the space they need to grow. This allows people to put down roots and become more involved with the business. Find a mentor and let employees be mentored too. Everyone can learn, and everyone wants to make a lasting contribution – they just need the opportunity and skills to do so. Those are just a few ways to encourage a healthy workplace. Once again, thanks to the Network for allowing us (TVH) to share some of our workplace wellness successes over the past year. TVH is committed to keeping employees healthy and happy, and hope you are too. If you would like to learn more about work wellness programs, contact Bonnie at bonnie.steer@tvh.com for more information.
Nutritional ventures. Keeping active is great, but the key to good health lies in what you eat. Swap out some of the unhealthy vending machine items for healthier ones, start encouraging employees to bring healthier snacks for workplace celebration days (we all have those days), and offer a healthier lunch for group meetings. Maybe even treat your employees to a green smoothie.
Conveyor Components
Encourage social connections. When employees have friends at work, and have a connection to the people around them, they are happier and more productive. Healthy relationships buffer life’s stresses. Help employees get to know each other by spreading good news about events such as births, promotions and other successes – work and personal-related. You can also offer different non-work related events, like picnics or charity drives.
Know your health numbers. Encourage employees to get an annual checkup. A clear, updated health picture will help employees accurately determine their health status. Many insurance plans will come on-site to provide employees an assessment, and it’s also part of the Affordable Care Act, so you can get checkup at no out-of-pocket costs to you. Remember, it is less costly to cover medicines that control blood pressure, cholesterol, or diabetes, than it is to pay for the doctor bills and hospital costs relating to those avoidable complications.

Industry News Flux Power unveils new lithium battery line at ProMat Flux Power Holdings, Inc., a developer of advanced lithium batteries for industrial applications, announced the beta version of its 500Ahe LiFT Pack lithium-ion battery for “End Rider” pallet jacks, the newest entrant to its LiFT Pack line for Class III lift equipment (forklifts). Flux Power exhibited at ProMat 2015 for the first time, where it unveiled the 500Ahe LiFT Pack model E3 beta along with the full LiFT Pack line. In response to customer requests for a higher power lithium storage alternative to legacy lead-acid batteries, Flux developed and is now releasing the beta version of its 500Ahe LiFT Pack model E3 battery for End Rider pallet jacks which carry a standing driver in addition to a pallet load. End Riders are larger, heavier and more powerful than “Walkie” pallet jacks, Flux’s initial target market, requiring a more robust energy storage solution. Flux’s strategy has been to build industry awareness and adoption for its lithium-based LiFT Pack solutions, starting with smaller, widely-deployed Walkies, and then to extend into larger, more complex solutions such as End Riders. Flux CEO Ron Dutt, commented, “Flux Power is transforming the industrial battery sector with its expanding line of lithium battery packs that significantly exceed the performance of traditional lead-acid batteries at a significantly lower total cost of ownership.
Our state-of-the-art lithium solutions solve a variety of existing performance challenges with a common theme: longer run times, sustained high power performance, limited maintenance and a greener solution. Flux delivers these advantages at price points that significantly lower the total cost of ownership compared to conventional battery offerings.” Flux has secured leading OEM and global customer technical approvals for its 250Ahe, 135Ahe and 80Ahe LiFT Pack models that power Walkie pallet jacks. National and regional material handling operators with significant Class III material handling needs have piloted Flux LiFT Packs and are now moving into initial or expanded deployments. These customers have experienced the performance benefits of Flux LiFT Packs and are thrilled to find a viable alternative to legacy solutions. www.FLUXpwr.com

Industry News Manufacturing Day welcomes silver and bronze sponsors for 2015 The roster of Manufacturing DaySM 2015 sponsors recently grew by three as the following organizations pledged their support to this national movement. The Precision Metalforming Association (PMA) and the Precision Machined Products Association (PMPA) both renewed their Silver sponsorships for a third consecutive year and Women in Manufacturing (WiM) renewed its Bronze sponsorship for a third year. Manufacturing Day sponsors provide the resources to support manufacturers participating in the program, a grassroots effort by U.S. manufacturers to improve public perception of manufacturing in America by coordinating awareness-raising activities at a variety of locations across the country on October 2, 2015. Manufacturing Day is an annual national event, executed at the local level, that supports hundreds of manufacturers across the nation as they host students, teachers, parents, job seekers and other local community members at open houses designed to showcase modern manufacturing technology and careers. A panel of co-producers

Product Preview New FR Series 15/25 extendable counterweight liftruck introduced
Kollmorgen releases a new high-performing system controller
U.S. manufacturer Hoist Liftruck has introduced a new FR Series extendable counterweight liftruck model designed to offer versatility and value to the 15,000-18,000 lb. (7-11 tons) capacity forklift market. The FR 15/25 is engineered to have virtually the same footprint as a 15,500 lb. (7 ton) forklift, but also achieve the capacity of a 25,000 lb. (11 ton) forklift. This innovative design also maintains a lighter gross weight for easier ansportation and lifting with cranes. “We hear the word ‘versatility’ all the time from our customers and companies that we speak with throughout the country,” said Marty Flaska, president and owner of Hoist Liftruck. “In general, our entire FR [Series] line is founded on the concept of versatility, but our new FR 15/25 amplifies that concept. We’re offering a liftruck that not only can provide the same capacity and maneuverability of a 15,000-18,000 lb. unit, but also additional capacity up to 25,000 lbs. for roughly the same cost.”
Kollmorgen announces the latest release of the Kollmorgen NDC8: Version 2.6. This release provides a significant new advantage for larger AGV (Automated Guided Vehicles) manufacturers that supply solutions for large warehouses: Large-system AGV applications need a high-performance System Controller that can handle the complexity of large warehouse layouts, varying load size/weight and complicated material flows. NDC8 2.6 manages all these variables quickly and precisely, while allowing AGV suppliers to use a single solution and skill set. Kollmorgen’s NDC8 is an application-independent automation platform used by AGV suppliers to build their solutions. It consists of system software, vehicle hardware and software, as well as design and service tools.

The forklift mounts have been uniquely designed to attach to a variety of positions on the forklift for ease-of use/access to computers and increased mobile workforce productivity. Mounts can be adapted and installed in overhead cage, vertical pillar and/or dash locations on the forklift truck. “Our forklift mounting products deliver key attributes including safety, ergonomics, quick and easy ‘no drill’ installation and mounting flexibility, making them an ideal match to satisfy the demands of forklift truck and fleet operations,” stated Brett Rowland, PMT President and General Manager. www.precisionmounts.com
New Xtender battery regenerator The Xtender from Flight Systems Industrial Products is an all-in-one machine for discharging, desulfating and recharging lead-acid batteries, with a 6 cycle process. It is fully automated with touchscreen programing, using a high frequency pulsation process, for a full range of battery types and specifications, from 2V to 150V and up to 3000AH. Sulfation is the main reason for capacity and efficiency loss, which is caused by the accumulation of extremely hard lead sulfate crystals. The Xtender uses a high frequency pulsation process to break-down these crystals. Its process can be monitored remotely and packages include capacity reporting and optional cell monitoring sensors. www.fsip

New charging system solves industry’s ‘single biggest problem AMETEK Prestolite Power introduced the TruBID lift truck battery charging system, the first of its kind to answer the motive battery industry’s biggest problem – how to accurately measure an undercharged battery so it can be properly recharged. Making its debut at ProMat 2015 in Chicago, TruBID is considered by industry experts an engineering application breakthrough since it finally solves an age-old problem of uncertainty in getting batteries recharged to their maximum capacity. What makes the new TruBID charging system different? According to Jim Lichtenberg, Business Manager for AMETEK Prestolite Power, “TruBID is able to accurately measure the specific gravity of the electrolyte in the battery, the only truly accurate way to determine the state of charge of any battery and ensuring a full recharge every time.” www.prestolitepower.com

Sovella small parts trolleys are ideal for this situation and significantly increase productivity up to 30%. Sovella Cabinet trolleys offer storage for a range of small parts, and are now available in sets. Cabinet trolley sets include trolley frame, aluminium rails, casters, bottom shelf and 8 small parts cabinets. Clear cabinet drawers assist in easy identification of parts. Labels are included, and drawer dividers are available. A corrugated drawer allows for easy picking of small parts. Sovella cabinet trolleys are double sided and can be easily reconfigured as needed.

The safest, most efficient way to handle pallets Automation Plus, a Division of CSF Incorporated has invented a new way to handle pallets, called the Pallet Return Device. The PRDTM is designed to operate in both warehouse and production operations and makes handling pallets (wood or plastic) safer and more efficient than current practices without using any outside energy source such as electricity or compressed air. The PRD incorporates a unique method for stacking empty pallets. Currently, stacking pallets requires expensive machinery or intense manual labor (movements prone to injury). The PRD enables a new method, wherein the operator lifts the pallet over a pivot point thereby creating a mechanical advantage to remove the back strain associated with lifting pallets. www.palletreturndevice.com
Caster Concepts adds caster to lineup TWERGO Lite is the ultimate two-inch wide caster. It achieves an average of 25 percent reduction in initial push force on loads totaling 2600 pounds or less. It takes advantage of the patented face design that our TWERGO wheel offers, but does not have the dual wheel friction reducing capabilities or weight capacity of TWERGO. TWERGO Lite is designed to replace the standard two-inch wide caster and add ergonomic benefits while staying competitively priced. TWERGO Lite is the latest addition to the Caster Concepts ergonomic line of products. The line includes premier caster wheels, rigs and polyurethane tread that significantly reduce exertion and the risk of injuries from over-exertion such as pushing and pulling. Reducing push force is critical. Overexertion is the number one cause of workplace injuries in United States. A study by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says the cost to businesses is $15 billion. www.casterconcepts.com

Tech Talk Covering your dealerships increasing costs No this is not another article that talks about profitability. I will not explain how to raise all of your prices and achieve profit from your dealerships profit centers. If it was that easy then this topic would not be so interesting. If you run a business in today’s environment a week does not pass where you consider raising your prices and weigh its impact against its effect on total sales. The truth is that in every market during every cycle there is at least one competitor who is trying to buy market share be it in new truck sales, service or even rental business. The purpose of this article is not to solve all of your dealerships pricing issues but rather to discuss this important issue and attempt to provide thoughtful information. To begin, never try to focus your pricing efforts on the dealership that is clearly under pricing to buy market share. At our dealership we try to analyze the customer’s application and determine if it makes good business sense to discount in one area such as PMs in order to capture the profit in other areas. Often, there is no justification and we explain to the customer that we provide a quality product and service that requires a certain rate. Profitability should not be a dirty word. Sure you may say that you cannot lose an account and that it would be better to have the account at a lower price than to lose it entirely. I would argue that you would sometimes be better off staying home than to use the companies resources and not cover the costs. No business can survive on that strategy. The other problem is that information is missing at the time these pricing decisions are made. Let’s list all of the costs that are increasing annually to better frame this discussion. Wages must rise as the cost of living increases each year, business insurance, utilities, worker’s compensation insurance, hospitalization insurance and we must not forget the cost of fuel. These are the costs that haunt us all. Now let’s list the basic areas where prices can rise: standard labor rate, flat rates for PMs, parts pricing, freight rates, new/used truck prices and fuel surcharges. Some of these areas are very straight forward and some may not be so clear. Fuel surcharges must exist with today’s rising fuel costs. However, some dealerships look at this as another profit center. For road repairs some dealerships fuel surcharges are outrageous. Some have a standard flat rate wherever the customer is located. This causes problems with customer’s that are close by with minimal travel time. A fair fuel surcharge is based on different zones and can be explained by mileage x fuel price difference factor. The purpose is to cover

the spread – not the entire fuel cost. Customers will always call to question new charges – if you have a fair answer as to how you arrive at the charge it will be more commonly accepted. If you say, “We needed to increase our sales so we decided to pick a $10.00 surcharge across the board,” the customer will surely be upset. In summary, fuel prices have varied by $.50 to $1.00 over the past year – if you have increased your fuel surcharge four times in the last year you need a new system of calculation. If you currently are not charging a surcharge you should quickly reconsider. Dealerships understand how to raise standard labor rates. We also understand how to raise the standard rate and discount it the next day for a large user – this is part of the business. The interesting part is how often do you raise your contracted PM service flat rate labor charges. Do you have PM contracts in place where the agreement was signed eight to ten years ago at a competitive rate back then? If so, the time has come to sit down with the customer face to face and re-negotiate a PM contract. Fair is fair and the PM contract does not state that the labor rate is lock indefinitely. Don’t take the lazy way out and raise it without the customer’s notification. Send out a salesperson to communicate it properly and re-negotiate. Another great question – do you know what your parts department’s standard markup is on all of the different parts sold (not just your product line)? Investigation may provide answers that are shocking. The common parts answer is “I can’t raise that markup – I don’t want to lose the business.” By simply increasing % markups for different parts groups you will increase the profitability of the parts department. Remind the parts person that most customers will not notice a difference of one or two percent. Finally, we all figure a dealer prep cost into the cost of a new forklift truck. We also all complain about how there is very little profit in new equipment deals. You should consider the costs associated with the installation and prep and see if the dealer prep charge covers the time under your current labor rate. Also, ask your business insurance representative what the insurance cost is per $1,000 of equipment sold – you may not like the answer. Generally speaking, our very competitive industry makes pricing power seem non-existent. Pricing theory would explain that as companies go out-of-business prices will rise. The question to ask yourself is – what side of that theory do you want to be a part of? What was the invoice amount from the last HVAC service call you made to your company? Our industry needs to learn from these others who have it right. Industry News Club Car donates to Folds of Honor Foundation Club Car President and CEO Marc Dufour presented a check for $10,000 to the Folds of Honor Foundation on Friday, March 20. The organization sponsors scholarships for dependents of veterans who were disabled or killed in service to our nation. The check was presented at Club Car’s corporate offices in Augusta, Ga., after a moving presentation by Allen Wronowski, who accepted the check on behalf of the foundation. Mr. Wronowski is honorary president of the PGA of America and director of golf development and relations for the Folds of Honor. “Club Car is very pleased to partner with this organization that’s doing such wonderful work honoring American patriots and caring for their families,” say Dufour. Of the more than one million dependents adversely affected by deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, nearly nine out of 10 do not qualify for federal scholarship assistance. Folds of Honor and its partners help meet their needs by providing higher education tuition assistance for spouses and children and supporting private education tuition, tutoring and educational summer camps for children K-12. Members of Club Car’s Veterans Employee Resource Group (VERG) also attended the ceremony and a luncheon that followed. VERG is comprised of Club Car employees who donate time to help veterans, active military members and their families through networking, special events and welcoming and onboarding veterans into the Club Car family.

The Club Car VERG chapter is currently in the planning phase to create an annual event that will provide a perpetual source of support to the Folds of Honor Foundation. “We are excited about this unique opportunity to give to the families of those who have in some cases given their all for their country,” said Kurt Wilson, chairman of the Club Car VERG chapter.
Patriot Golf Day As a Folds of Honor partner, Club Car will also support the foundation’s Patriot Golf Day campaign. Sponsored by the PGA and the United States Golf Association, the fundraising event is centered around Labor Day weekend, though special events take place throughout the year. Patriot Golf Day asks golfers across the country to donate to the Folds of Honor
mission as they participate in the game they love. In 2014, more than 5,000 golf courses took part and more than $5 million was raised. Over the last eight years, the event has help fund more than 7,500 scholarships in all 50 states. www.clubcar.com

Industry News Five mistakes that can torpedo your finances Financial professional suggests improving your money mastery during financial literacy month The investment world comes with such a maze of options and pitfalls that it’s little wonder people routinely become entangled in monumental and costly mistakes. Tax implications lurk behind nearly every move. Investment risks vary from negligible to moderate to great. And it’s not just a matter of making the right financial decisions. It’s making them at the right time, says Stephen F. Lovell, a financial professional and president of Lovell Wealth Legacy. “Doing the right thing at the wrong time makes it the wrong thing to do,” Lovell says. Don’t despair. April is National Financial Literacy Month, a good time to take stock of where you are money wise and explore how you can improve. Lovell says that by asking the right questions or taking the right precautions, you can sidestep these common financial mistakes: • Becoming infatuated with the latest hot investment. It’s easy to be seduced by whatever is creating the greatest buzz. After all, you don’t want to miss out while everyone else is reaping rewards. Resist the temptation, Lovell says. Momentary sizzle doesn’t guarantee long-term success. “Hot investments are like ice cubes,” he says. “They’re solid when you get them, but they soon liquefy and when you liquidate, your gains trickle away.” • Neglecting to consider all the options. Savvy investors use different kinds of investments to satisfy different financial needs, Lovell says. Don’t neglect the full array of available investments. “Relying only on stocks, bonds and cash puts you at a disadvantage,” he says.
• Failing to account for investment costs and tax ramifications. Investing isn’t free. Usually, there is some sort of fee attached and those fees can gnaw away at your returns. Taxes can, too. Before long, what looked to be a nice return can devolve into a minimal, break-even or losing proposition. “Don’t diminish the importance of investment costs because they diminish your wealth,” Lovell says. “You need to take time to learn about the costs that are applied to each type of investment.” • Spending all that comes in. Too many people let their income level set the ceiling on how much they spend each month, Lovell says. Such spendthrift habits leave people living paycheck to paycheck and when the inevitable emergency arises – a car repair, a medical bill – the bank account is short and they need to take on debt just to survive until the next payday. Your budget, not your income, should dictate spending limits, Lovell says. If you don’t have a monthly budget – and many people don’t – now is a good time to create one, he says. Just make sure the amount you budget to spend is less than your net income, and then stick to your budget. Otherwise, you’ll soon creep into the realm of deficit spending, a place best avoided. • Trying to go it alone. Most people, whether they want to admit it or not, need investment advice, Lovell says. Without reliable guidance, they can end up lost in the financial jungle and succumb to numerous hazards that await the unwary. “You need someone who understands all the upsides and all the pitfalls,” he says. But not all investment advice is equal, either. “The person you choose should be both skilled and trustworthy,” Lovell says, “and should always put your interests first.” www.lovellwealthlegacy.com

Industry News Overton’s/Gander Direct Case Study Company: Overton’s/Gander Direct, Gander Mountain is the nation’s largest retail network of outdoor specialty stores for shooting sports, hunting, fishing, camping, marine, apparel, footwear and outdoor lifestyle. Opportunity/ Challenge: Overton’s faced multiple issues with their current storage solutions among their biggest challenges was poor cube utilization, wear and tear on their existing bin boxes, and ergonomic concerns for their employees. A major future concern was a massive influx of SKUs due to market segment growth in apparel. All of these issues combined ultimately to lead them to being out of space and needing to make a change. Overton’s main concerns were how to be able to manage SKU growth while insulating their employees from having to dig through pallets/totes on the ground or on shelf levels and how to reduce the use of step ladders to reach product stored overhead all while making their products more readily accessible and easy find. They analyzed their data and found that they didn’t having enough of the “right-sized“ locations to support growth in their apparel product category. This product segment was growing dynamically and needed additional pick slots to support this rapid SKU growth and they needed them quickly! Options: Upon seeing the SpeedCell® Storage Solution in different publications and having it being brought to their attention by Wayne Garris of Indoff, their dealer business partner, Overton’s knew they had their solution. Already having a horizontal carousel system onsite they knew it wasn’t going to be flexible or scalable enough for this challenge, so they knew it wasn’t a viable option to fix their problem. They also knew that they didn’t want to spread their product over multiple locations which would lead to additional logistics and management challenges. Finally, they didn’t want to take on the additional cost of adding a pick module as it would lead to more WMS costs as well automation and conveyance challenges.
Quality Fast Certified
Solution: Overton’s decided to install SpeedCell® into 4 bays during their peak season to test WMS compliance as well as fit and function. Upon completion of this trial they became very confident that it would work in their environment and thus the decision to move ahead was made, so they installed 88 more bays within their 267,000 sq. ft facility. This installation added 219 locations in each bay or 4,380 locations to each aisle for a grand total of over 17,000 additional locations within their current footprint with no additional structural additions. The implementation of SpeedCell® not only increased SKU locations, but it has also reduced footsteps between picks thus increasing their efficiency and decreasing ergonomic concerns. Now their associates no longer have to crawl over boxes on pallets or climb on ladders to reach for products. By decreasing seek times they have significantly increased productivity and it has proven itself as a major time savings solution. Results / ROI Implications: By adding 17,000 SKU locations to their current warehouse Overton’s was able to increase storage capacity by 86% per bay. Increasing the number of SKUs per bay has also paid ergonomic benefits as well. By reducing footsteps per linear foot and by decreasing seek time for products has improved employee engagement and reduced daily fatigue. A net result of this installation has been that Overton’s employees have increased picking and stocking efficiency by 25%. Overall this project was deemed such a success that budgeting has been approved for additional rows of SpeedCell® in 2015. Now not only will apparel be stocked in SpeedCell® Bays but there are initiatives under way for footwear as well as high value items to be stored neatly and efficiently in SpeedCell®. www.speedcell.net

Industry News Associated Announces Organizational Changes Effective on March 31, 2015 Dave LeMaster, Vice President of Associated, announced his retirement after 38 years of service to the material handling and supply chain industries. To ensure a seamless transition with Dave’s retirement Associated has announced two new positions, Director of Engineering & Design and Director of Marketing & Business Development. Troy Donnelly has been named to the new position, Director of Engineering & Design. In this role, Troy will have responsibility for Associated’s engineered systems and consulting solutions. Troy was formerly a Project Director at Peach State Integrated Technologies, an Associated subsidiary. Troy has a Bachelors of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering from Milwaukee School of Engineering where he a member of the Industrial Engineering Advisory Committee and has an MBA from Marquette University. Shari Altergott has been named to the new position, Director of Marketing and Business Development. In this role, Shari will contin-
ue to have responsibility for Corporate Marketing as well as the new responsibility of managing Associated’s emerging business units, Fleet Management and Telematics. Shari has been with Associated for 14 years starting her there in 2001. During her time at Associated she held several positions and most recently was the Corporate Marketing Manager. Shari has a Bachelors of Science Degree in Marketing from Northeastern Illinois University and an MBA from Northern Illinois. When asked about these changes Mike Romano, President/CEO of Associated said, “I am confident that Troy and Shari will make the same impact with their new responsibilities as they did with their prior ones. We believe that these changes will help us to further enhance the customer experience and the solutions we provide to the marketplace insuring a seamless transition with the retirement of Dave LeMaster”. www.associated-solutions.com

Industry News Ultimate Lead integrates two lift truck software products into its customizable CRM Ultimate Lead Systems has integrated a pair of popular software packages into its CRM program to give its lift truck and material handling clients a single source for identifying and managing sales opportunities. The result is a unique Customer Relationship Management (CRM) program that enables manufacturers and dealers to leverage the best features of the two well know and valuable offerings. Electronic Data Associates’ (EDA) software product captures and manages Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) filings on lift trucks and capital equipment and Yosemite Software Solutions’ Sales Representative Assistant (SRA) tool helps companies create and manage quotations for lift truck sales opportunities. Ultimate Lead joined the packages within its CRM program and added some features of its own to create a customized CRM program for the lift truck industry.
and performance are tracked easily on Ultimate Lead’s dashboards. Rather than work with two or three different applications, companies and their reps can now work within one that seamlessly integrates the other two enabling them to be more productive. “If reps want to create a sales opportunity and build a quote, they can do so in one place, quickly creating a detailed quote by make and model with a variety of options” Hill explained. “Managers and reps also can keep tabs on sales opportunities progress through the sales cycle, actual sales and even the sales lost to the competition. It’s all tracked on our intuitive CRM dashboards. Our customers can also easily download data directly from our system if they want to crunch numbers in Excel or use other data analytics tools.”
UCC Filings
Founded in Berea, Ohio in 1982 as a sales lead management company, Ultimate Lead has been serving the lift truck industry for decades. Its client list includes a large national lift truck manufacturer and one of the largest lift truck dealer networks across the country. The experience with those two clients has made Ultimate Lead something of an expert on managing lift truck sales and leads. “We have done some extensive and innovative work integrating the EDA data and Yosemite tools into our CRM offering for lift truck and material handling marketers,” Hill continued. “These were two stand-alone products with specific purposes. We consolidated them within a single CRM program. “Because we manage “back-end” administrative aspects of our clients’ programs and processing, and provide customization, Ultimate Lead is a nice one-stop shop for Customer Relationship Management services and support,” Hill summed up. “We’re very customer-driven. Rather than trying to fit your business into “out-of-the-box” CRM products, we listen to our client’s challenges and tailor solutions to meet their needs. Our recommendations are based on success stories.”
The EDA program captures UCC filings on lift truck purchases nationwide. It provides access to comprehensive market data, identifies lift truck buyers, locates market opportunities and generates leads for sales personnel to pursue. “We had already been handling inbound 800# calls and sales lead management for one of our lift truck clients,” said Russ Hill, founder and president of Ultimate Lead. “We showed them the more indepth aspects of our CRM program and how we incorporated UCC filings into it. The CRM allows our clients to see their customers and prospects, build quotes, and close and track sales. Incorporating UCC filings enables lift truck dealers to identify more target sales opportunities for parts, service and truck sales. It enables their sales forces to more easily manage accounts, sales calls, closing and tracking sales.”
SRA Program The SRA tool has databases on parts for every lift truck make and model which is kept up-to-date by Yosemite Software. SRA is integrated into the Ultimate Lead CRM program making it easy to build quotes and track sales call history and sales performance. Quotes
