Industry News WorkplaceAware eliminates barriers for near miss reporting According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were slightly more than three million nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses reported in 2013. While this number is lower than previous years, the question that remains is how many near misses occurred in the workplace that were not reported and could result in a future injury or fatality. Heinrich’s widely accepted accident triangle theory states that for every major injury, there were 29 minor injuries and 300 near misses. There are many reasons for near misses not to be reported, but a new solution called WorkplaceAware can help companies improve safety by eliminating those barriers to reporting. In addition to the free WorkplaceAware mobile app, the solution includes the MessageQube, a mini cellular desktop printer that receives text and photo messages from any cellular phone. Using the mobile app, employees can photograph near misses, type a description of the incident and quickly send it to their company or supervisor’s MessageQube. Simple text messages can be sent using the text message feature on any mobile phone. Once a report prints on the MessageQube, it is also posted to the employer’s online Enterprise Dashboard

where management can view and manage reports, including documenting corrective action taken and escalating reports to higher authorities. Photographs and more detailed reports up to 600 characters in length are sent using the WorkplaceAware app compatible with Apple and Android operating systems. Using WorkplaceAware, safety managers are instantly alerted to near miss and safety hazard reports as they print in real-time from the MessageQube. A green light flashes each time a new report prints making managers aware that a report has been submitted. And, the system can be configured to also notify managers via email when reports are filed. “WorkplaceAware eliminates many of the reporting barriers companies must overcome to make workplaces safer,” said WorkplaceAware CEO Rob Sweeney. “There are many reasons employees choose not to report a near miss incident including fear of retribution, a desire to avoid red-tape or to avoid interrupting pace of work. By using WorkplaceAware, companies can allow employees to report incidents from the field, without having to fill out pages of paperwork or holding up the work day. And if employees choose, reports can be submitted anonymously. Our customers see an increase in near miss reporting days after engaging WorkplaceAware, and their businesses are safer and more productive as a result.” www.workplaceaware.com

Industry News What greenhouses need to improve operations Most product entering or leaving a greenhouse are usually stacked on pallets. Save your business time and money by investing in the proper materials handling equipment to do the work. Forklifts, manual and electric pallet trucks, and electric utility vehicles can assist in making the loading and unloading process less of a chore and reduce employee injuries and product damage over the long and short term. Hand-bombing heavy bags of growing mix, boxed plants, nursery stock, plant carts and containers off or onto a trailer is a difficult job, employing an ergonomic alternative is a greenhouse grower’s best choice. Base your selection of the equipment required on the size of your operation, delivery occurrences, and distance materials have to be moved. Also consider the environment you’re working in. An interior workplace should focus on environmentally sustainable products like manual or battery operated forklifts, pallet trucks and utility vehicles. An electric materials handling fleet will keep your maintenance costs down as well as sustain a higher level of environmental standards in your greenhouse. With zero emissions from your equipment, your employees and product will thrive. Pallet trucks are the most common solution for loading and unloading trailers and moving product from one end of the greenhouse to another. The decision whether to buy manual or electric is up to you. Electric offers a more ergonomic solution, while manual pallet trucks are the most affordable. Hydraulic pump pallet trucks raise the product a few inches from the ground

and require a level of physical strength to push or pull and steer the pallet. An electric pallet truck will offer the same action with much less effort on the part of the operator, allowing anyone to move product through the facility. If you have a dock which is at truck floor level, pallet trucks make the loading/ unloading a simple task. The distance in which you will need to travel with your loaded pallet should also be considered, as an electric option works best if you’re moving materials over 300 feet. Spring-loaded casters should be a major consideration when purchasing an electric pallet truck, offering better control and limiting tipping when taking corners. The control handle is designed to provide steering, speed, lift, horn and brake controls. Consider also a built-in battery charger when shopping for your electric pallet truck. Is your dock not at truck floor level? Consider a lift truck in this scenario. Also available in manual or electric models. When a dock is not available, the lift - or straddle truck - will raise its forks to the truck floor level to load or unload pallets. These units are also recommended in applications where you require stacking of nursery stock supplies and bulbs. Adjustable fork spacing and weight requirements are an important feature to consider as well. Another option is an electric forklift. Forklifts come in a wide variety of sizes and load capacities. They can be relatively inexpensive and do the work of a pallet truck and lift truck. Electric is your best choice for an indoor application, but propane is also a good option. An electric Mini forklift has a tight turning radius and lifting capacities of up to 2,000 lbs. It is compact, yet operates just like any other forklift. Perfect for tight aisles and small spaces. If you’re sending and receiving product on a daily basis, a forklift is your best choice. For your interior applications; electric utility vehicles are a great option. An electric puller can tow your plant carts and revolutionize your greenhouse’s efficiency in moving materials throughout the facility. A personnel carrier is also an added bonus in that it can move people while towing carts through the greenhouse. It also has the ability to carry cargo like grower mix or containers up to 660 lbs. These options reduce employee fatigue and improve moral. Wherever you can make your employee’s work physically less taxing, the more benefits you will realize. Once you’ve reviewed your needs with a sales person and made your equipment choices, a service plan should be put in place to keep your trucks working effectively. Down-time in any facility due to equipment malfunction is a difficult hurdle. Make sure your provider offers rental equipment and on-site service options with repair parts in-stock. Forklifts and pallet trucks are not exclusive to large greenhouses, even small grower benefit from having materials handling equipment included into their greenhouse operation. Industry News Remembering an industry icon... Howard Bernstein An industry icon has passed at the age of 92. Howard Bernstein, founder and former chairman of the Atlas Companies in Schiller Park died at 10:30 p.m. Monday, May 18, at Evanston Hospital in Chicago, Ill. Bernstein loved the material handling industry and spent more than 75 years building his business, but more importantly he built friendships with everyone he met. After leaving the Atlas Companies, Bernstein Howard Bernstein was passionate about encouraging young 1923-2015 people to enter the material handling industry. He even formed the Howard Bernstein Scholarship Fund contributing his own money to launch it. Bernstein mentioned only five universities in the country had courses in distribution, but with this scholarship and the efforts of MHEDA and MHI that list has grown to more than 30 universities with distribution and engineering courses. Bernstein served as president of MHEDA in 1965 and attended almost every convention. “Howard was one of the greatest leaders and icons in this industry and an example of someone who truly gave of himself for the betterment of others. He never stopped sharing his gifts of experience and knowledge,” said Liz Richards, executive vice Howard wearing his famous president of MHEDA. “The past few hat worn at the Hannover Fair years, Howard passionately worked in Germany. to help raise the awareness of this industry among students through the establishment of the Howard Bernstein Industrial Distribution Scholarship first by seeding the fund with $150,000 and then tirelessly fund raising within the material handling community bringing in tens of thousands of dollars. His message was about the importance of ‘investment’ in young people. I was fortunate to have worked with Howard on this effort and have had the pleasure of Howard’s friendship and mentorship for the past 20 years. The material handling industry has lost a great man.” Aftermarket consultant John Walker added, “I first met Howard early in the 60s, and in my entire career I have never met a man with the integrity of Howard ... if he told you something you could count on it.” Memorials can be sent to any of these organizations that Howard was passionate about. The Howard Bernstein Scholorship Fund or Bernstein received the Lifetime the Palm Springs Air Museum. Achievement Award from MHEDA.

Industry News Wynright program extends useful life of material handling systems Wynright Corporation, a subsidiary of Daifuku North America Holding Company and a leading provider of intelligent material handling systems, announced today an expansion of its after-sales market support program to meet the needs of organizations grappling to stay ahead of re-shoring and omni-channel fulfillment trends. Its new Client Asset Modernization initiative helps Wynright clients improve the performance and productivity of their aging material handling systems. Wynright offers a complete set of material handling solutions for easy integration with a client’s business processes and applications for competitive advantage. As part of the initiative, Wynright is working to help clients consider alternative technologies and processes, which will extend the useful lives of their current systems. This approach is especially critical when budget constraints prevent clients from replacing entire systems. “We’re working with our clients to address aging material handling systems in a more intelligent way,” said Clint Lasher, Executive Vice President of Wynright. “In the past, much of the electrical and mechanical equipment in distribution centers were stand-alone systems from multiple vendors. We’re finding that more and more companies are taking a proactive approach, and are looking for ways to maxi-

mize performance and mitigate their risk factors.” A recent survey from market research firm IDC speaks to the dire consequences of one of those risks – downtime. Seventy-one percent of U.S. businesses lose anywhere from $125,000 to $17-million from just 10 hours of downtime per year. A key component of the Asset Modernization initiative is Wynright’s Wynsoft™ Supply Chain Execution Solution software, which aligns business intelligence, WMS (Warehouse Management System), WCS (Warehouse Control System) and machine controls across a single platform. “With most of these older facilities, we’re dealing with a variety of system components, enterprise resources and other operational tools from multiple vendors,” Lasher said. With our software, we’re able to upgrade these facilities so each of the components can communicate and share information across a common dashboard – regardless of who initially provided each component. We are now able to capture and analyze data, system-wide, giving our clients the power to make timely, informed business decisions.” www.wynright.com

Industry News Europris invests in GNB lithium-ion for forklift fleet Norwegian wholesaler Europris is investing in lithium-ion batteries supplied by GNB Industrial Power, a division of Exide Technologies. The Norwegian company trialed GNB’s Sonnenschein Lithium batteries on some of its forklift fleet for six months, and lowered its operating costs significantly. Compared with traditional batteries, lithium-ion batteries are smaller and more energy efficient, and recharge around eight times faster. Charging times are so fast that the same battery can be used around the clock, with short bursts of recharging while workers take breaks. Lithium-ion batteries are more expensive to buy but much cheaper to run and maintain. They are especially useful in 24/7 operations, which would otherwise require two to three batteries per forklift, switched throughout the day. Lithium-ion eliminates this need entirely, improving productivity and return on investment. Lithium-ion technology also allows businesses to do away with charging rooms, freeing up floor space for storage and operations. This is particularly beneficial when space is at a premium, or where property prices are more expensive. The batteries also require no maintenance or water refilling, and lead to much-reduced energy bills compared with lead-acid batteries. “We start by thinking about total cost of ownership when deciding between lead-acid and lithium-ion. The focus is always on the customer and the economics driving the decision,” said Michael Geiger, VP Sales & Marketing EMEA at Exide Technologies. Europris is one of Norway’s biggest discount chains, with more than 220 stores. The company has around 200 forklifts across five warehouses, with the majority based in its main Øra warehouse just outside Fredrikstad. Europris is in the process of replacing around 150 forklifts, with GNB providing lead-acid and Sonnenschein Lithium batteries, and a set of GNB chargers with specially optimized charging algorithms. GNB will supply its products through local dealers of forklift manufacturers Linde and Still, and will be helping Europris directly by providing knowledge and expertise. Europris bought five Sonnenschein Lithium batteries at first, with four coming through Linde and one through Still. Linde was also involved in the six-month trial process, working closely with GNB. “We’re delighted to be working with Europris, and excited to see the benefits that Sonnenschein Lithium will deliver to the business,” said Harald Myhre, Sales Manager Norway at GNB Industrial Power. www.exide.com

After receiving a few e-mails back and forth, a customer finally said, “I want to know physically how a sweeper/scrubber works. Can you describe it? I am operating a Tennant Model 8300 machine and don’t know how it works.” I answered, “Okay, I will give it a try.” The Tennant Model 8300 is a small riding sweeper/scrubber. It is an electric/battery unit; however, the functionality in describing a sweeper/scrubber is the same. So, if we were discussing an American Lincoln 7760 or a Power Boss TSS80 the description would be the same as the model 8300 Tennant. A sweeper/scrubber is naturally a combination of #1 a sweeper and #2 a scrubber. These are separate components on the machine which means you are able to “sweep only” or “scrub only” or “both.” The components of the sweeper section are: • Main and side brooms • Debris hopper • Hopper dust filter. The components of the scrubber section are: • Scrub brushes (they may be disc brushes or cylindrical brushes). • Solution (clean water) tank • Rear and side Squeegees • Liquid vacuum system • Recovery (dirty water) tank In a simple path moving forward, the side broom sweeps debris into the path of the main sweeping broom. The main sweeping broom sweeps debris into the hopper. The large debris, approximately the size of soda cans, settle into the bottom of the hopper. A vacuum system then sucks the lighter debris and dust through a hopper filter where it is then trapped. This concludes the sweeping part of the machine. A combination of water and detergent flows from the solution tank to the scrub brushes. These brushes are generally located directly behind the main sweeping broom. With the liquid solution on the floor, the scrub brushes agitate on the floor surface loosening debris from the surface. As the machine is moving in a forward motion, the side and rear squeegee wipes the dirty solution and debris up off the floor. It is vacuumed up usually through the rear squeegee tube up into the recovery tank. The advantage of operating and/or owning a sweeper/scrubber is that you have options. These machines can also perform one of the two functions as well. So if you just need to sweep you can. If you need to scrub only, you can do that as well. For those owners of sweepers only or scrubbers only, what I have described is the same individual functions. These are simply combined to make the sweeper/scrubber. As always I appreciate you reading my articles and, until next time you can contact me at creamerscorner@hi-gear.com. Thanks for reading. Creamers Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advise, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your Sweeper/Scrubber.

Industry News Bringing crane and rigging safety training to life A crane simulator rodeo will again be a popular feature of the North American Crane Bureau’s (NACB) 29th annual event, when it stages a four-day Lifting and Load Handling Training Expo in Las Vegas, 16-19 November, 2015. NACB, a leader in crane safety training excellence, provides high level information and networking every year with environmental, health and safety (EHS) managers; plant and safety managers; risk managers; crane operators; riggers; and signal personnel among regular attendees. Many of them will again participate in the crane simulator rodeo. L.D. Stutes, Vice President—Sales and Marketing at NACB, said: “The crane simulator rodeos are a hit with our clients. This brings not only a learning component via simulation, but an enjoyable and competitive aspect to the training event.” NACB has seen what Stutes called “monumental growth” in crane simulators in recent years and has installed simulation technology for mobile telescopic, mobile lattice, overhead and tower cranes for applications in a variety of industries including construction, mining, manufacturing, military, energy and refineries, to name just a selection. Stutes added: “With the ability to create and manipulate scenarios for crane operators to experience, trainers literally create an operator. With no risk, and no expanded costs to simulator operation, companies are finding that their operators are training more frequently and effectively, and have not only become more competent and effective, but also more knowledgeable and safer.” NACB Interactive Educational Systems (IES), which has been manufacturing crane training simulators for nearly 15 years, has invested in programming and manufacturing to constantly enhance and improve the realism of simulation. Stutes said: “The operators who sit in the seats of our simulators tell us that it is about as real as it can be without being in a real crane. NACB-ies simulators are designed by crane operators, for crane operators, for true to life physics.” “As a training company,” he continued, “The vision was to have the ability to utilize effective 24/7 hands-on operational training, allowing the trainee to not only learn how to operate in a consistent learning environment, but to also experience potentially catastrophic situations without the real risks and costs associated with using real cranes.” The crane simulator rodeo captures the essence of the Lifting and Load Handling Training Expo, where progressive crane and lifting professionals congregate to discuss changes and developments related to

ASME, ANSI, ISO and OSHA, while embracing the camaraderie that the competition and networking activity generates. Such is the ongoing popularity of the crane simulator rodeo, NACB recently introduced a sister event—the rigging rodeo—based on a similar concept.

Improved format NACB has constantly evolved the model of its events and, last year, it implemented arguably the most significant changes to the format in nearly three decades. Attendees now benefit from smaller group learning environments with greater interaction and the integration of props and other learning tools, such as custom made, small scale working cranes to demonstrate factors such as ground bearing and also wind tunnel models to demonstrate the environmental impact on lifting equipment and loads. Stutes said: “Our attendees have taught us that this mix keeps the event alive. The Lifting and Load Handling Training Expo allows them to listen, see, learn and teach. The desire to promote attendees to interact with each other only brings the event to a higher level. NACB doesn’t claim to know everything, but when you partner with your attendees to bring all of their life experiences to the surface, the event elevates itself.” He continued: “Knowledge is a vital key to success. Everyone gains knowledge through life. They were either taught it by someone, or they learned the hard way—experience. The desire that we have to bring networking to the forefront during our event culminates the many life experiences into a successful learning experience. Older and younger alike, seeing and hearing things from the other, only expands our knowledge.” This year’s event will include seminars on rigging, inspector training, load charts, lift planning, ground support and current regulations pertaining to mobile cranes, overhead cranes, hoist systems, aerial work platforms, lift trucks, and other assorted lifting equipment. “By ensuring that we incorporate a wide range of topics, information and technology, we improve our chances of offering something of interest and important to someone,” Stutes said. “Our attendees are versed in a myriad of disciplines and can find multiple tracks to be involved with during the week.” NACB Founder and President Ted Blanton continues to have significant involvement with ASME, ISO and OSHA—relationships developed over many years. He ensures that technical staff are as up to date as possible with what he learns and understands from his experiences. Stutes said: “Ignorance is no excuse from the law. It is vital to NACB that people in this industry be kept informed. We wish to propagate knowledge of the industry’s best practices and regulations as much as possible. This event has allowed us a successful vehicle in which to accomplish this. Safety should be of utmost importance in this industry. The more informed and educated you are on the issues, disciplines and technology available to you, the safer and more productive everyone is.” He concludes: “People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care. That has been the bedrock of this company. To do things right and for the right reason, above all else. There is no better way to show this than to have real conversations with people, and this is the perfect venue.” www.cranesafe.com

Become the Exception Getting and keeping your client’s attention Mike Marchev Here are three questions to ask yourself: • How can I add more value to my relationships? • What makes me different? • How can I get and keep my client’s attention? The answer consists of only seven words. It’s true. And, I arrived at that conclusion after witnessing two recent events. The first revelation came as a result of meeting a man at a trade show booth. After swapping business cards I told him that I would be getting back to him. When I called him the next morning, he said the following … “I never thought in a million years you would actually follow through. I thought your words were the typical sales chatter ... meaningless.” What did I do that was so exceptional? I called the guy back like I said I would. The second instance was a bit more taxing. I answered the telephone when I heard it ringing. When I did, the voice on the other end quickly said, “So you actually do what you say you do. You do answer your own phone.” I remember saying to myself, “You must be kidding?” In fact, these two fundamental customer service tenets have become remarkably rare, and I am sorry to say, they are very much a BIG DEAL. The answer to the bulleted questions above consists of just seven words: Do what you say you will do. Simple? Yes. Profound? Absolutely. But be warned – you will find this to be easier said than done. But in the end, it will be very much worth the effort. Starting this week and for the next few ... oh hell, forever – do what you say you are going to do.

Business Profile Manitou Americas’ Mustang skid steer loader celebrates 50 years Owatonna Manufacturing Company (today a part of Manitou Americas, Inc., a leading manufacturer of compact earthmoving and material handling equipment), began designing and manufacturing its own line of skid steer loaders. They were the second manufacturer to develop skid steer loaders, at that time known as “self-propelled, four-wheel drive units,” starting with the Owatonna Mustang Series 1000. The Mustang legacy of innovation continues 50 years later with one of the most complete skid steer loader lines on the market. Today, a complete offering of eight radial-lift and three vertical-lift models, including the 4000V, the world’s most powerful skid steer loader, are offered under the Mustang brand name. “The Mustang brand is built on a foundation of designing and producing powerful, easy-touse skid steers,” said Dan Miller, CEO of Manitou Americas and President of the Manitou Group CEP-Compact Equipment Division. “Our task for the future is to incorporate new features and technology, yet still maintain the durability and integrity our customers have come to expect from the Mustang brand.” To carry the success of the skid steer loader line into the future, Manitou Americas, Inc. continues the tradition of developing equipment to match the demands of its core customers in the agriculture, construction, landscape and rental markets. In 2009, an investment in a state-of-the-art Research and Design facility in West Bend, Wisconsin paved the way for future innovation and durability testing.

“We are very proud of our 50 years of experience in designing and manufacturing the Mustang skid steer loader,” said Lori Heidecker, Marketing Director. “The Mustang brand skid steer loader is known by its dealers and customers to be one of the most durable, reliable, and innovative in the market today. With the roots of the Mustang brand beginning in 1888 in the agriculture industry in Owatonna, Minnesota, Manitou Americas is dedicated to delivering the highest quality, innovative skid steers to customers across the globe today and into the future.”

History The Mustang brand has roots dating back to 1888. Known in the early years as the Owatonna Manufacturing Company, OMC manufactured a variety of agricultural implements. Fordecades, farmers easily recognized the OMC paint colors of lime green and red on grain drills, seeders, elevators and balers. In 1965, the company developed its first skid-steer, the Mustang. The term “skid-steer” wasn’t used at that time, so the company called it a “self-propelled, four-wheel drive unit.” It was also known as the Owatonna Mustang Series 1000. Even by today’s standards, the Series 1000 was good size. Designed to do the job of much larger machines, it featured a 30-hp Wisconsin aircooled engine and was one of the most powerful compact machines available in the 1960’s. With a rated lift capacity of 1,200 lbs. and a turning radius of 45 inches, the Mustang Series 1000 was used on farms, construction sites, parks and landscaping projects. The machine featured a multi-disc transmission and drive system that provided smooth operation. The multi-disc clutches had nine working surfaces with heavy-duty separator springs. The entire drive and transmission system was encased in an oil reservoir for cooler and cleaner operation. The hydraulic system used a 10-gpm pump with a full system relief valve at 2,000 psi. The engine featured stellate valves and positive valve rotators. A dry-type air cleaner and oil filter were standard equipment. In addition, the Series 1000 operated on a 12-volt electrical system and had an enclosed starter and industrial alternator. In 1997, the Mustang brand was sold to the Gehl Company, headquartered in West Bend, Wisconsin. Manufacturing facilities were consolidated into Gehl’s South Dakota plant. Today, Mustang is known throughout the world for a superior line of skid steer loaders. In fact, Mustang offers one of the broadest lines of compact construction equipment available from a single brand. In addition to eleven skid steer loaders, the product portfolio currently consists of five compact zero-tail-swing excavators and three track loaders. Throughout the years, the dedication to the skid steer product has never changed. Product updates included more powerful engines, higher lift heights and compact dimensions. The Mustang brand skid steer loader has consistently evolved, answering customer demands for a reliable and adaptable machine. www.manitou-group.com

Safety Corner Fall Protection Products Forklift Safety Training Services, Inc

All fall protection products fit into four functional categories. 1. Fall Arrest 2. Positioning 3. Suspension 4. Retrieval Fall Arrest: A fall arrest system is required if any risk exists that a worker may fall from an elevated position, as a general rule, the fall arrest system should be used anytime a working height of six feet or more is reached. Working height is the distance from the walking/working surface to a grade or lower level. A fall arrest system will only come into service should a fall occur. A full-body harness with a shock-absorbing lanyard or a retractable lifeline is the only product recommended. A full-body harness distributes the forces throughout the body, and the shock-absorbing lanyard decreases the total fall arresting forces. Positioning: This system holds the worker in place while keeping his/her hands free to work. Whenever the worker leans back, the system is activated. However, the personal positioning system is not specifically designed for fall arrest purposes. Suspension: This equipment lowers and supports the worker while allowing a handsfree work environment, and is widely used in window washing and painting industries. This suspension system components are not designed to arrest a free fall, a backup fall arrest system should be used in conjunction with the suspension system. Retrieval: Preplanning for retrieval in the event of a fall should be taken into consideration when developing a proactive fall management program. Fall Protection Systems: Listed below are different types of fall safety equipment and their recommended usage. • Class 1- Body belts (single or double D-ring) are designed to restrain a person in a hazardous work position and to reduce the possibility of falls. They should not be used when fall potential exists; positioning only. • Class 2- Chest harnesses are used when there are only limited fall hazards (no vertical free fall hazard), or for retrieving persons such as removal of persons from a tank or a bin.

• Class 3- Full body harnesses are designed to arrest the most severe free falls. • Class 4- Suspension belts are independent work supports used to suspend a worker, such as boatswain’s chairs or raising or lowering harnesses. • Rope Lanyard- Offers some elastic properties for all arrest; used for restraint purpose. • Web Lanyard- Ideal for restraint purposes where fall hazards are less than 2 feet. • Cable Positioning Lanyards- Designed for corrosive or excess heat environments and must be used in conjunction with shock absorbing devices. • Shock Absorbers- When used, the fall arresting force will be greatly reduced if a fall occurs. • Rope Grabs- A deceleration device which travels on a lifeline, used to safely ascend or descend ladders or sloped surfaces and automatically, by

friction, engages the lifeline and locks so as to arrest the fall of an employee. • Retractable Lifeline Systems- Gives fall protection and mobility to the user when working at height or in areas where there is a danger of falling. • Safety Nets- Can be used to lesson the fall exposure when working where temporary floors and scaffolds are not used and the fall distance exceeds 25 feet. • Rail Systems- When climbing a ladder, rail systems can be used on any fixed ladder as well as curved surfaces as a reliable method of fall prevention. The information contained within this document was obtained partially from the St. Paul-Tie or Die Fall Protection Program manual. For the full article visit www.forkliftsafety.com/osha.html. Industry News Steady growth expected for the equipment rental industry The equipment rental industry stands poised to set an industry record for revenues in 2015 according to the latest updated industry forecast from the American Rental Association (ARA), despite reduced demand for equipment in oil patch drilling sites. Rental companies historically are able to adapt to changing market conditions, shifting inventory and moving equipment to where demand is greater and today is no exception as lower oil prices are leading to greater consumer spending and fueling increased activity in construction as well as party and event market segments, offsetting the decline in opening new sites for drilling. The new quarterly ARA forecast from its ARA Rental Market Monitor™ subscription service has been modified slightly from February and the numbers remain very positive with total revenue growth of 7.9 percent expected in 2015 to reach a record $38.5 billion in the U.S., including all three industry segments — construction/industrial, general tool, and party and event. ARA’s current five-year forecast calls for steady growth of 7.2 percent in 2016, 8 percent in 2017, 7.9 percent in 2018 and 6.8 percent in 2019 to reach $51.3 billion. “Those in the rental industry have learned how to thrive in different economies and customers continue to learn that renting equipment is a smart move as market conditions today can change rapidly,” says Christine Wehrman, ARA’s executive vice president and CEO.

“Even as several forces, including harsh weather, held back U.S. economic growth in gross domestic product (GDP) to 0.2 percent in the first quarter, total rental revenue was up 4.9 percent in the same time period and is expected to exceed 9 percent in the second half of the year,” Wehrman says. Construction/industrial rental revenue is now forecast to increase 8.2 percent in 2015 to $25.9 billion, with general tool projected to grow 7.9 percent to $9.8 billion this year and party event to show a 4.7 percent increase to $2.7 billion. “The equipment rental industry will achieve its new peak level as a the result of a prolonged gradual improvement in the economy as a whole, and construction, industrial and consumer markets in particular,” says Scott Hazelton, managing director, IHS Economics and Country Risk, the respected global forecasting firm that compiles data for the ARA Rental Market Monitor. “There also was some lift from energy markets, which are slowing, but the majority of the growth has come from solid fundamentals. Given a current level of activity based on solid ground, an economy that continues to improve will lead to rental revenues that are achievable and lasting,” Hazelton says. “The significant price reductions in oil are over and they will likely drift upwards over the year. Major cuts in new well drilling already have occurred and production will begin to taper off soon. We made the adjustments to the rental outlook for energy prices in February and we have not made any further adjustments as events are playing out approximately as anticipated,” Hazelton says. “While low oil prices have reduced growth prospects in the oil and gas area, that situation affects primarily production at this point. We still are seeing strong growth in downstream facilities, such as refineries and petrochemical processing plants. However, low oil prices have increased demand for other goods. For example, the U.S. is expected to demand 200,000 more light motor vehicles than previously expected, which creates rental opportunity within auto plants,” Hazelton says. “Lower energy costs also translate into improved consumer spending power and corporate profits, so the party and event sector also gets a boost,” he says. The construction/industrial rental penetration also was up 100 basis points in 2014, from 52.9 percent in 2013 to 53.9 percent for 2014, according to the ARA Rental Penetration Index™. ARA released the 2014 ARA Rental Penetration Index in February at The Rental Show 2015 in New Orleans. “Rental penetration continued to increase in conjunction with strong growth in rental revenues in 2014,” says John McClelland, ARA vice president for government affairs and chief economist. ARA’s Rental Penetration Index measures the proportion of the total fleet of construction machines that are owned by equipment rental companies. The index is value-based and uses original equipment cost as the primary weighting factor to calculate the ratio of rental equipment value to total fleet value. Sales into the rental channel by equipment manufacturers also continue to grow, meaning the penetration rate could climb higher this year. In addition, ARA is forecasting an increase of 8.3 percent in investment in equipment by rental companies this year. www.ararental.org

Business Profile Logitrans A/S celebrates 75 years of innovation and tradition The Danish manufacturer of material handling equipment, Logitrans A/S, celebrates its 75 years anniversary on 1 May 2015. Logitrans was founded in a little smithy in 1940, and until 2002 the company was called Nisap Maskinfabrik. The beginning during the war was tough, and for the founders, Ingrid and Nis A. Pedersen, the war came close – both in the smithy and in the residence buildings. However, the general attitude to life both in the smithy and in the residence buildings was from the beginning positive and characterised by a unique pioneering spirit. In her memories Ingrid describes the first years like this: “We had good neighbours, and when the streets started smelling of burned rye, we knew that we would soon gather for a cup of substitute coffee and barley meal bread. We learned to appreciate the good people, living around us, in a time when the world was out of order.”

Nis was creative and solution oriented and had a special interest in hydraulics and mechanics! He worked persistently with all requests and inquiries from the fishing industry and agriculture. From 1970, he started using his interest in hydraulic solutions to develop and manufacture material handling equipment, e.g. pallet trucks, highlifters and stackers. From a young age Erling Pedersen, son of Nis and Ingrid Pedersen, helped everywhere in the company, and it was soon evident that he was to take over the company. Since 1975 he has been the CEO. He has continued working in the spirit of his father: Developing and designing unique products solving handling requirements of the customers. Focus is always on ergonomics, well-being and optimum working conditions of the users, when developing products and this continually contributes to increase efficiency and work satisfaction in the companies. Through all these years, the company has been developing rapidly. Steadily, the share of exports has grown, and today more than 90% of the production is exported to more than 55 countries worldwide. In celebration of the anniversary, Logitrans has made an exhibition in the factory, showing many of the unique products, developed and manufactured over the last 75 years. www.logitrans.com/en.aspx

Tech Talk Maximize profit by properly quoting a reman engine John Gelsimino Jr.

At the dealership level, an engine overhaul job should be very profitable if managed correctly. However, if the quote is not created properly the dealership can give away the profits. This article will explain how to maximize profit by properly quoting a reman engine. Every job begins at the quotation level. If the quotation is incorrect or incomplete it will obviously effect the job’s profitability. Two problems occur upon quotation: engine model identification and engine failure identification (or core charge acknowledgement). From my experience in the reman engine business, proper engine identification is a common mistake for many dealers. The engine model should always be confirmed by calling either the forklifts OEM or your reman engine supplier with the relevant ID information. Quite often the parts or service writers use the technician’s description of the engine. This may work sometimes but can come back to haunt you and eat away at the job’s bottom line if incorrect. The other mistake more commonly made is not asking the correct questions about the customer’s engine failure. The most important question is: “What is the failure of the customer’s engine? Or, why are we replacing the engine?” If the engine is seized, if the technician can visually see a hole in the block, or if there is water in the oil, this gives the service writer great insight into whether the dealership will be charged for the core. Often, engine jobs are quoted completely excluding the core charge in the quote. If a core charge comes back the dealer

has two choices: either absorb the core resulting in lost profit, or go back to the customer after the truck has been delivered which results in an unhappy customer. Neither of these two scenarios are appealing, that is, if your dealership cares about customer satisfaction. Some would say that the correct way to quote the job is to include the entire core charge amount in the quote. This way, when a core charge comes back you are covered. This is better than not including the core charge but is still problematic. I will continually argue that the problem is not in the core charge amount or how it is displayed, but rather in the communication of the issue itself. Let me explain. If the core charge is included in the quote it must be understood by the customer that a credit will be issued against the amount after the core is returned. If this is not communicated properly and a local repair company also quotes the job without a core, it may cause confusion between the two quotes. The local repair company may get the job simply because the customer feels more comfortable not having to deal with the large core charge amount or may misunderstand and think the local guy is less expensive. In this case, no profit exists when the job is lost. Once you have identified the engine’s failure it is simple to call your reman engine supplier and ask them about core charges. At All Industrial Engine we make it a point to go over the common core charges that exist for that particular engine model and/or tell you the core charge for your particular failure. 95% of the time a core charge can be communicated at the time of quote instead of at time of final core inspection. Many times the engine supplier will state that on that engine model a core charge will not exceed a certain amount. Communication between all parties is the key. With this information you can prepare the quote to explain the price of the reman engine plus the final core charge. When quoting the final core charge it can be explained to the customer up front, e.g. “due to the broken crankshaft an additional $$$ will be added to the cost of the reman engine.” When the competitor only quotes the engine your quote will stand out because the customer will know that you have done your homework and prepared a complete quote to include the customer’s specific failure. By quoting a job this way the customer will never receive a core credit or have to deal with any confusion related to core charges. This method works on many levels. Most important is a profitable job concluding with a satisfied customer. Also, from my experience at the forklift dealership level, core charges are always a touchy area and most people feel abused when they are notified by the engine supplier of a core charge. However, with better communication of the engines failure between the dealership and engine supplier, a core charge will no longer be a surprise but rather a confirmation of what was discussed at the time of the quotation. By properly quoting a reman engine with better information and communication between all parties involved you can maximize the profit of your next reman. Flow-Rite launches free battery management software Battery Steward®, Flow-Rite’s latest innovation, is a cloud-based solution that organizes an operation’s battery care schedule, sends alerts when tasks are due, records maintenance and asset data, and allows the data to be analyzed over time. The app is currently available to download for free on the App Store and Google Play. Battery Steward utilizes a mobile device and identifying labels to create easyto-follow battery care task lists. Tasks are checked off by scanning the identifying label that has been placed on a battery. Battery Steward highlights and elevates batteries with overdue maintenance tasks, minimizing the chance of missing a task. Battery maintenance data is analyzed through the online portal to help identify neglected, misused, or abused batteries. www.flow-rite.com

Industry News Manufacturing Day welcomes new Bronze Sponsors for 2015 The roster of Manufacturing DaySM 2015 sponsors has added two key supporters as the following companies pledged their support to this national movement. CNA Insurance and Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. both renewed their Bronze sponsorships — CNA for a third year and Reliance for a second year. Manufacturing Day sponsors provide the resources to support manufacturers participating in the program, a grassroots effort by U.S. manufacturers to improve public perception of manufacturing in America by coordinating awareness-raising activities at a variety of locations across the country on October 2, 2015. Manufacturing Day is an annual national event, executed at the local level, supporting hundreds of manufacturers across the nation as they host students, teachers, parents, job seekers and other local community members at open houses designed to showcase modern manufacturing technology and careers. A panel of co-producers comprised of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, International (FMA), the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), the Manufacturing Institute (MI), the National Institute of Stan-

dards and Technology’s (NIST) Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP), and guest producer Industrial Strength Marketing (ISM) provide the centralized support necessary to coordinate this nationwide array of simultaneous events. The national media partners for the event are Edge Factor and the Science Channel and the national movie partner is American Made Movie. “The co-producing organizations appreciate the support of CNA which has demonstrated its belief in the manufacturing sector and the need to inspire a new generation of manufacturing talent. Reliance Steel and Aluminum, as a major material supplier to the metal fabrication segment of the industry, also deserves our gratitude for its support of programs that introduce young people to the industry. We are grateful for the continued support of these organizations, which are so dedicated to serving their respective sectors of manufacturing,” said Ed Youdell, president and CEO of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association. www.mfgday.com

See it in action!

NMHG named Silver Superior Supplier by Defense Logistics Agency NACCO Materials Handling Group (NMHG) was recently named a silver-level superior supplier by the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) as part of the Department of Defense’s Superior Supplier Incentive Program (SSIP). This honor recognizes NMHG as one of the department’s top performing supply contractors for fiscal years 2013 and 2014. “NMHG is proud to supply the DLA with our industry-leading Hyster® and Yale® lift trucks, enabling them to transport the items our military forces need to operate,” said David Furman, President of Sales and Marketing, NMHG. “To be recognized for our proven track record of superior performance by America’s combat logistics support agency, further signifies our ability to provide cost-effective, efficient materials handling solutions to our partners.” The SSIP is an extension of the Department’s Better Buying Power initiative and is designed to incentivize contractor performance by identifying suppliers with the highest rankings in areas such as cost, schedule, performance, quality and business relations. The DLA considered 153 of its parts and commodity suppliers with the largest contracts that have done business with the agency over the past two years. Of those considered, 40 companies were selected as DLA’s superior suppliers based on the Contractor Performance Assessment Reporting System ratings, along with several companies that have partnered with the agency on recent significant cost-savings initiatives. www.nmhg.com

and collaborated on many special projects. “Formally aligning these two great organizations was the next step,” said Kurt Huelsman, Sr. Vice President & General Manager of FMH Conveyors. “For years, we’ve both worked really hard individually, but we quickly realized we were a stronger, faster and more innovative solutions provider together as one customer-focused organization.” The new name is a combination of the well-known identities of both companies. “Many of our Flexible Material Handling customers referred to us as FMH,” said Huelsman. “The Best Conveyors name also has strong brand equity with our customers.” Nestaflex, BestFlex, BestReach, and MaxxReach brands are well-known for quality and durability and are depended upon by the world’s largest distribution and retail giants. ”Our top priority was to align our sales, engineering and applications design teams to our customer accounts,” said Huelsman. “Providing the best and most complete service means building relationships with customers so they have quick and direct access to us at all times. As FMH Conveyors, we will continue to deliver the same dependable quality, same unparalleled support, and the same expertise that has made us the undisputed leader in truck loading and unloading applications.
