Industry News Flow-Rite hires new southern and central regional managers Flow-Rite has hired two new sales managers. Rob McKnight was hired for the position of Southern Regional Manager. His sales territory covers Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. Industry News Has the American dream hit the skids? By Michael E. Gerber
The best-selling author of the “E-Myth” book series says the American Dream has been waylaid – no different than if it had been besieged by robbers in a dark alley – and Gerber is intent on rescuing it. The way Gerber sees it, the issue is our confusion about the American Dream and what every one of us believe to be true about it. And it’s time to get it back on track, says the fiery 78-year-old small-business guru who vaulted to fame in 1986 with his original “E-Myth” book and has been engaged in realizing a dream of his own over the past 40 years. “Somehow we’ve forgotten our roots and why there was an American Dream to begin with,” Gerber says. “We’ve lost track of the reason why millions upon millions of people came here to try to make a better future for themselves. We’ve also forgotten that the dream never was a political one, but a personal one for each and every one of us. It’s the politicizing of it that’s created all the trouble.” Gerber (www.michaelegerbercompanies.com) has a great deal of experience in how to restore faith in the American dream. He has worked with tens of thousands of small business owners over the past 40 years. The trick, Gerber says, is giving small business owners and aspiring small business owners a splash of cold water to wake them up to see that the American Dream isn’t dead, nor is their business. Instead, what they are missing is a lack of commitment to their own dream. To bring his point home, Gerber began a nationwide campaign this year in Riverside, Calif., where the city’s mayor, Rusty Bailey, helped launch Gerber’s first city-sponsored Dreaming Room. Gerber invented the Dreaming Room, which he describes as an “entrepreneurial incubator,” in 2005, and has been delivering it to individuals worldwide ever since. It’s a program where the unemployed, underemployed, self-employed or small business owners who find themselves stuck in their current unworkable circumstances join together, led by a facilitator. In an intense, small-group setting they go through a step-by-step process where they create, collaborate and test ideas to develop or improve their current circumstances by inventing a new business. Once developed, the concept for that new business is then put to work, with Gerber’s team helping the new entrepreneur apply Gerber’s entrepreneurial principles to design, build, launch and grow their new company. Riverside was just a first step in Gerber’s vision for city-sponsored economic development initiatives in cities and counties throughout the nation and the world. Having launched Riverside, it’s on to Fresno and the 14 counties surrounding that California city of 509,000 people. In May, Gerber plans a Dreaming Room for the 96 mayors of all the cities in those counties “to awaken the spirit of entrepreneurship in them.” “We will be teaching people how to make it on their own in Fresno, San Mateo, and every U.S. city who invites us in, you name it,” Gerber says. “In the process of inspiring and leading them and mentoring them, something remarkable will happen. Each and every individual will understand, many for the very first time, that he or she and no one else is responsible for their circumstances.” Even as he makes more Dreaming Room plans, the prolific Gerber is still pounding out books, with three he’s working on simultaneously. They are “Beyond the E-Myth,” “The 5 Essential Skills of Extraordinary People” and “Making It on Your Own in America.” The latter title has become an overriding theme for him of late. For Gerber, economic development is all about the individual and how personal responsibility is the key to making it in America.
“It happens with the individual or it doesn’t happen at all,” he says. “Every single individual is accountable for their own economy – an ‘economy of one’”. “Our economic problem has been created through the belief that big government can solve our problems. We then created a monster of a government that presumes to think for us. That’s why our economy is in tatters. It’s why the number of people on food stamps has grown exponentially. It’s why the number of people who are impoverished has grown, and the number of unemployed has grown exponentially. It’s also why our federal debts and deficits have grown beyond the pale.” “The way forward is to go back”, Gerber says. “Back to those inspirational days when the nation took its first awkward steps, the Constitution was written and the Bill of Rights was tacked on like a brilliant afterthought”. “If it becomes a political discussion, it misses the point,” Gerber says. “It was never political back then, it was existential. In the last article we discussed just how Tennant Model 8300 Sweeper/Scrubber works. In this article we are going to discuss the most practical method to sweep and scrub using this machine. First, you want to pick up any oversized pieces of debris before you even begin to sweep. Pick up pieces of wire, string or large debris that could get wrapped around the sweeping or scrubbing brushes. Second, plan your sweeping and scrubbing directions in advance. You could even put a plan on paper to follow. Plan to have long runs with little stopping and starting. Sweep the un-accessible areas with a push broom. Push the debris into your main aisle for the sweeper to pick up. Always do this type of area ahead of time, before the sweep. This should be, pretty much, common sense to do this. Third, begin sweeping your cleaning area counter clockwise and continue keeping this direction. Each path should overlap two to three inches. And, of course, look out for those posts. You don’t want to bump into those or scrap along the sides of the machine. Fourth, the dead end aisle. A dead end aisle is one that runs into an obstacle such as a wall. To scrub this aisle, back-up until it ends. Start sweeping or scrubbing in a forward motion exiting this aisle. Do this for all your dead end aisles. Fifth, adjust the machine speed scrub brush pressure and solution flow as required when scrubbing. If you are experiencing poor scrubbing performance, a second round of “double scrubbing” maybe your answer. Double scrubbing is the process which the operator makes two or more passes over the same area. The first pass is made when the side and rear squeegees are raised which allows the detergent to soak on the surface. Allow the detergent to soak for ten to fifteen minutes. Now, make your second pass with the squeegees in the down position. This should clean even the most heavily soiled surface. If your surface is still soiled, perform a second double scrubbing. Business Profile Logitrans A/S celebrates 75 years The Danish manufacturer of high quality ergonomic material handling equipment Logitrans A/S celebrates its 75 years anniversary on May 1st 2015. Logitrans A/S is the parent company of Interthor Inc and the manufacturer of the Thork Lift. Logitrans was founded in a little smithy in 1940. Until 2002 the company was called Nisap Maskinfabrik after its founder Nis A. Pedersen. On the morning of April 9th 1940 Nis biked home from the bank with the deed for the smithy in his hands. Little did he know that the Germans that very morning had decided to invade Denmark as a part of their Operation Weserübung The upstart during the war was tough and Nis shoed horses to make ends meet. However, the general attitude to life both in the smithy and in the residence building was from the beginning positive and characterized by a unique pioneering spirit. In her memories Ingrid Pedersen describes the first years like this: “We had good neighbors, and when the streets started smelling of burned rye, we knew that we would soon gather for a cup of substitute coffee and barley meal bread. We learned to appreciate the good people, living around us, in a time when the world was out of order.” Nis was creative
and solution oriented and had a special interest in hydraulics and mechanics. He worked persistently with all requests from the fishing industry and agriculture. From 1970, he started using his interest in hydraulic solutions to develop and manufacture material handling equipment, e.g. pallet trucks, highlifters and stackers. From a young age Erling Pedersen, son of Nis and Ingrid Pedersen, helped everywhere in the company, and it was soon evident that he was to take over the company. Since 1975 he has been the CEO. He has continued working in the spirit of his father: Developing and designing unique products solving material handling requirements of the customers. Focus is always on quality, ergonomics, well-being and optimum working conditions of the users. This continually contributes to increase efficiency and work satisfaction in companies. During the 1980s Logitrans started exporting to the US through Interthor Inc. When the Thork Lift was introduced to the US market - it was groundbreaking. Today, it is still the best selling product stateside. In 2006 Logitrans decided to purchase Interthor and made it a fully owned subsidiary of Logitrans A/S Denmark. On May 1st 2015 Erling Pedersen will hand over his position as CEO to his daughter Gitte Kirkegaard Berg; hence, third generation will thereby be head of management. Safety Corner Comprehensive training – key to forklift safety By: Forklift Safety Training Services, Inc.
Annually there are over 34,000 injury accidents that involve forklifts, more than 13,000 Workers’ Compensation claims are filed as a result of forklift accidents and 70 to 90% of all accidents are caused by operator error. Furthermore, unnecessary wear and tear resulting in higher maintenance costs are attributable to improper operation and poorly trained operators. There soaring statistics can be significantly reduced by implementing a comprehensive training program to help reduce accidents, injuries, employer liability and maintenance costs, only to realize improved morale, productivity and efficiency. The results (shown to the right), of a detailed study sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), found that proper training can improve operator safety and performance by as much as 70%. Properly trained forklift operators are the responsibility of the employer, as clearly stated in the O.S.H.A. Federal Regulation 1910.178, and safe operating practices must be reinforced in the workplace on a daily basis in addition to the required training, testing, evaluations and employer authorizations. The training program must include formal classroom instruction, written test and a driving evaluation or performance test for each specific forklift that the employee will operate. A periodic evaluation of each operator’s performance is required. Refresher or remedial training is required and the employer must check training to ensure that it is current. Balance? An interesting concept Mike Marchev
The word was BALANCE. This is such an important concept as we all struggle to make ends meet while trying to keep our senses of humor as we make our livings. Like everything else in life, achieving BALANCE is easier said than done. We chuckled at the notion that we both thought that as we grew older (more experienced) that life would get easier. No such luck! I was reminded of a bumper sticker that read: “Don’t Believe Your Parents: Adulthood Is Way Over-Rated.” Not unlike the word SUCCESS, the definition of “balance” becomes a personal choice. We all have our own definition … and we all seem to be struggling with it. I believe that the first step towards maintaining balance in our lives is to list the categories that make up our Individual Balance Wheels. What exactly do we need to balance? Entries may include nutrition; exercise; business; family; hobbies; spiritual; sleep; study time; bucket lists and other areas that are important to you. You be the judge. You be the jury. Next, it is probably wise to eliminate those activities within these categories that are not contributing to your satisfaction level. That will leave room to introduce some new tactics, or better yet, shift time from one category to the next. 24-hours is all you get so it is up to you to use this time prudently. Once we have made these additions, deletions and adjustments, it is time to dust-off and exercise some discipline. The time you allocate for each category must be adhered to. You also must be kind to yourself since you will probably come up short more than once trying to keep yourself on schedule. Give yourself permission to keep trying. Failure is okay, as long as you keep on going. It is important to know, and this falls under the heading of Emotional Intelligence, that everything and anything that you are experiencing was not invented yesterday. You are not in this thing alone. We are all under the gun and we all find ourselves wishing (fruitlessly) that we had more time to do what needs doing. All you can do is all you can do. 1. Decide what needs doing. 2. Eliminate the time wasters. 3. Stop multi-tasking and focus on one assignment at a time. 4. Keep your sense of humor. 5. Call me before you head for the bridge.

Tech Talk Proper diesel engine installation One of the largest challenges of the engine remanufacturing business is often associated with improper engine installation. We all know that everyone reads all of the literature that comes with each reman engine – right? Even after reading all of the paperwork technicians still seem to find creative ways to damage the engines performance and longevity. Enough humor – this article will discuss basic diesel engine installation and how you can prevent premature engine failures. Imagine the most beautiful remanufactured diesel engine that you have ever seen arrive at your dock in a crate that is packaged to perfection. A technician unwraps the engine and sets it on the ground that is covered in oil dry. He takes the gasket box and sets it on an oily workbench where he was just machining a steer axle. So much excitement – he gets the intake manifold that was lying next to the glass bead machine and gets ready to prep the engine for install. The old oil and fuel filters were just replaced on a PM fifteen hours before the engine failed so the technician decides to re-use them. It’s a shame to throw them away they still have life left in them. All that’s left is the can of dirty off-road diesel that will be poured into the fuel tank with a funnel that was laying on the floor covered with oil dry. She’s ready to fire! Hopefully you understand the shop humor - but sometimes this is not far from the truth. Here is a list of critical installation points. Remember that this is a list of basics and intended to be used as a guide. • Check for freight damages and get setup in a clean area with the engine specifications supplied by your remanufacturer.

• Check to ensure that the engine’s application is correct prior to bolting on accessories. Bolt patterns on the block and crankshaft flange, crank shaft snout, PTO setup, oil galley and freeze plugs, oil pan configuration, etc. • Clean both manifolds and check for cracks and war page when applicable. Do not over torque. Do not glass bead! • Clean and flush the fuel filter housing and lines. Dirty fuel/ components can instantly clog the fuel injectors and cause black smoke on startup. • Check fuel lines from tank to pump for cracks or crimps. • Check transfer or lift pump for proper pressure if not supplied by your remanufacturer. • Replace all air, fuel, oil and crankcase filters. • Clean the air filter housing and hoses. Check for cracks and for proper sealing of the air filter. • Flush or replace the oil cooler if applicable. Ideally you should replace the oil cooler because it is difficult to be sure that all oil • Contaminates are removed. • Recore or replace the radiator and test. • Replace the oil pressure sending unit. • Adjust the clutch to the proper free pedal before starting. • Check the crankshaft end play before and after installing the transmission. • It is up to the technician to prevent thrust bearing failures. Excessive main bearing thrust wear can be caused by the following: - Clutch not adjusted properly - Pilot shaft or torque converter interference with the crankshaft - Blockage and/or restriction of the transmission oil cooler • Replace the belts, hoses and motor mounts. • Service and inspect the starter, alternator, etc. • Install and properly torque flywheel bolts. Over torquing can distort the crankshaft flange on one piece rear main seal designs. Do not use an impact. • Upon startup NEVER use engine starting fluid. Check oil pressure and coolant flow in the radiator. If oil pressure is not found in ten seconds of startup stop the engine and inspect the oiling system. • Prior to starting the engine - follow the procedures outlined in the engine’s service manual to prime the fuel system. Operating the injection pump dry can cause pump failure. • Bleed all of the air out of the fuel system by cracking the injector lines. • Run the engine at throttle and at no load until it reaches operating temperature. • Verify that no leaks are present and that the cooling system is working properly. • Runaround and load test the unit. • After the engine has heat cycled check the valve lash and re-torque the cylinder head bolts if practical. • Finish assembly of the truck and it’s ready to ship Don’t ruin that ReMaN. Follow these simple steps and you will have quicker and more profitable diesel engine installations.
