BECOME THE EXCEPTION

Persistence pays dividends

Mike Marchev Although there may not be any “do-overs” or “mulligans” in business these days, there is certainly time and rationale for “do-agains.” Let me explain:

All New!

Precision Telehandler • 40000lb capacity • compact design • hydrostatic drive • remote control capable

I recently sent out a blast email promoting one of my books. In this case, I was featuring my 52-week sales planner. What better time to start planning for a brighter future than right now? I wrote a sales letter and hit the button which sent my words out to internet land. As expected, the orders began to flow in. It is funny how when you ask somebody to buy something they actually buy something. (I am talking to you, sales pro. Ask and see what happens. You may surprise yourself.) You can call it “closing;” I prefer to refer to it as “asking.” In any event, my mission was successful. The following day, (and here is today’s message) I sent the exact same email out to the exact same list. (The nerve of me.)

• 5000 to 50000lb capacity • 4 direction drive control • hydrostatic drive • full cabin design

Some might have thought me pushy. Others obnoxious. Some may even have interpreted this as aggressive behavior from somebody who was certainly going out of business. No. No. And no again.

What did happen was that I received MORE orders on day two than I received on day one. This proved that repetition is not a bad thing. People are inundated with communications today and in order for you to get through the noise in many instances, you might have to take a couple of swings. The people who become upset with gentle tenaciousness are the price of doing business. Sorry good reader, regardless of how cool you are, you can’t be all things to all people. The faster some people opt off your list, the quicker you should be thanking them for the courtesy.

For more information, visit our NEW web site: Phone

When I hit the button on day two, experience and research told me that I should expect a full 50% of the number of orders I received on day one. This is sound marketing intelligence. In my case, however, this did not happen.

Repetition. Persistence. Diligence. These are the words that are going to see you through to the finish line. And for you procrastinators, here is another chance to place a vote for you and your future. My 52-week sales planner is a simple system that is designed to take your budget, time constraints and personality and direct them all amicably toward a successful and profitable sales campaign. It works for others and it will work for you. You don’t have to buy mine. Design your own daily planner, and then live by it. Become the Exception - Mike Marchev is a marketing humorist who has the skill to motivate. He shares his personal experiences and lessons in a fun, light and refreshing fashion through his monthly articles. Learn more about Mike at www. mikemarchev.com

TVH HEALTH NUDGE

Together we can make a difference Lucy DelSarto, TVH At TVH, we provide eight hours of volunteer time off to employees through our TVHCares initiative. This gives employees an opportunity to get involved with various non-profit organizations and charities to make an impact in the surrounding community. A study by Cone Research found that 79% of people prefer to work for a socially responsible company. We have a lot of passionate people at TVH who want to give back. Volunteer time off provides time for our employees to serve and give back while also bonding among co-workers as we gather outside the workplace. Being involved in the work rather than merely a corporate donation leads to a deeper sense of commitment, pride and connection with employees. Employees who are passionate about something outside of work (volunteering or serving a cause) are more likely to be passionate at work. In addition, studies have proven that people derive more happiness from experiences than from material things. The experience of being involved in serving others in the community enables employees to return to work refreshed, invigorated and full of positive energy. UnitedHealth Group’s Health and Volunteering Study indicates that “People who volunteer report that they feel better emotionally, mentally and physically.” “Companies with the highest levels of employee [volunteer] engagement see more than a 19% average annual increase in their operating income. Studies show that employees involved in company cause programs are 28% more likely to be proud of their company’s values, and 36% more likely to feel a strong sense of loyalty. This, in turn, can lead to improved job performance and lower turnover.” – New York Cares Combine the happiness derived from an enriching and inspiring volunteer experience with the appeal of working for a company that embraces giving back by providing volunteer time off and you have an amazing perk. If you’d like to learn more about our programs for health and wellness at your workplace contact Lucy DelSarto, TVH Health and Wellness Coach at lucy. delsarto@tvh.com.

PackSafe seeks OSHA action on safety rule The Industrial Packaging Safety Alliance (PackSafe) has filed a petition with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requesting that the agency conduct a rulemaking to update an almost 50-year-old rule relating to the safe handling and warehousing of hazardous and non-hazardous materials. The rule in question relates to the use and storage of flammable and combustible liquids in large volume industrial packaging. PackSafe is a coalition of producers of industrial packaging, their component and raw materials suppliers, as well as customers and manufacturers sharing concerns about the workplace and public safety risks from a rule that has not kept pace over the decades with evolving packaging technology and the development and growth of a broad range of liquid products. “The OSHA regulation in question incorporates by reference a standard in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 30, a flammable and combustible liquids code, dating to the agency’s origins in 1969,” noted John McQuaid, senior advisor to PackSafe. “Since its adoption, the NFPA has updated Code 30 15 times to provide for improved workplace and public safety related to flammable and combustible products, and OSHA has not kept pace.” “PackSafe’s request,” McQuaid continued, “does not involve creating new regulation, a request that likely would not be well-received in the post-election environment. Rather, our request to update the reference in OSHA’s regulations to the most current version of NFPA 30 is a long overdue, common sense fix to a dangerously outdated standard.”

■ Heavy duty unicage adjustable 8” thru 36” ■ MFG of extreme service heavy duty wheels

PackSafe’s initiative has drawn support from a broad range of interests, including the co-chairs of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus, a bi-cameral, bipartisan group of legislators. In an October 12 letter to Thomas Perez, U.S. Secretary of Labor, under whose jurisdiction OSHA operates, Caucus leaders noted, “Fires involving flammable and combustible liquids are a major risk to lives, safety, property, and the environment. According to a 2014 National Fire Protection Association report, during the period from 2007-2011, U.S. municipal fire departments responded to an estimated average of 51,600 fires per year starting with ignition of a flammable gas and another 160,910 fires per year starting with ignition of a flammable or combustible liquid.” “These fires,” the Caucus leaders continued, “resulted in more than 500 civilian deaths and upwards of $1.5 billion in property damage. Losses such as these could be prevented with updated standards for handling the flammable and combustible liquids that start these fires.”

The Caucus leaders urged OSHA to update its outdated regulation so that it incorporates the most recent edition of NFPA 30 so that the lives of first responders, workers and the public are not further jeopardized due to an outdated workplace safety standard. Other supporters of updating this existing regulation include the International Association of Fire Fighters and the National Volunteer Fire Council, who earlier in 2016 sent Secretary Perez a joint letter urging OSHA to take action. www.packsafealliance.org

SAFETY CORNER

Forklift safety inspections Brian Colburn, Forklift Training Systems One of the most challenging issues that companies face with regards to forklift safety is of the inspection checklist. Contrary to popular belief, OSHA does not require these checks to be made in writing and has stated this in a letter of interpretation which is located on their web site. Even so, from a functional and legal standpoint it is very wise to document everything in writing, including these inspections. How can you prove you really are doing them if there is nothing documented? The following are some major problems with regards to forklift inspections: 1) H ave the operators been properly trained on what to look for and do they know what to do when they find something wrong? What are your procedures for taking a forklift out of service and do you employ the same lockout/ tag-out requirements as on your production machines? If not, you should. Are your supervisors enforcing the forklift inspections or are they part of the problem by putting defective lifts back into service because they are critical to production?

4) People ask how long records have to be maintained, but as you saw in the beginning paragraph, you are not even required to document them in writing. Since most companies will be wise enough to know formal documentation is a good idea, then how long should you keep your records? The simple answer is that you need enough of a time period to prove that you are really doing them. Whether that is a month or six months, that is up to your company to decide, but keeping years of inspection records makes little sense. The newer monitoring systems, such as the Keytroller 601, can force the inspection, record it electronically and can even lock out defective forklifts from service and email management about the defect. Those with larger fleets will want to consider looking into that technology. Give us a call if you want to learn more about the possibilities. Written by Brian Colburn of Forklift Training Systems, a leading provider of forklift safety training and materials. Forklift Training Systems can be contacted at 614-583-5749 or at info@forklifttrainingsystem.com. Visit them on the web at www.forklifttrainingsystems.com.

2) A re the inspections really being done or are they being pencil whipped by filling out the whole list in 60 seconds without even taking a decent look at the units? I have seen checklists with 75 items, which are unreasonably long and others with just five items that are too short to do the job. Be sure your checklists cover all the items for your type of lift (reach, picker, pallet jack, etc.) and that they don’t have a bunch of items which do not apply to your units or application. You can use the operator’s manual for a guide on what items to put on your internal checklist or OSHA has a list on their website. 3) Th ose with very large fleets that run around the clock can generate a mountain of paperwork. If you have 75 forklifts and run three shifts, seven days a week you’d better have a huge filing cabinet. An OSHA compliance officer told me that he conducted an inspection on 25 of a customer’s 80 forklifts and that 16 of the 25 he inspected failed and had to be removed from service!

Shoppa's Material Handling reaches 30-year milestone and scrubbers by Advance, utility and personnel carrier vehicles by E-Z-GO, Cushman and SunEV as well as pallet rack by Interlake. Shoppa’s Material Handling, a 13-time recipient of the prestigious Toyota President’s Award, is currently working together with Toyota on their 2020 Vision of doubling in size. There are nearly 400 employees throughout the Fort Worth-headquartered company. The dealership has purchased a five-acre site for the building of a new larger facility in Amarillo. In addition, the remodeling of their Saginaw location into a full service Toyota forklift dealership is nearly complete to better serve Shoppa’s expanding customer base. To mark this major milestone for the Toyota forklift dealership, Shoppa’s will be celebrating this year with exclusive customer events and promotions. www.shoppasmaterialhandling.com Shoppa’s Material Handling is pleased to announce the celebration of their 30-year milestone as a Toyota Industrial Equipment dealer. The forklift dealership has been bringing innovative material handling, distribution and warehousing products to the North Texas marketplace for over three decades.

Have a prosperous New Year! CROWNS FOR SALE MODEL

Founded in 1981, Shoppa’s established itself as a used equipment sales and material handling service company, but quickly built a customer service-oriented operation and became the exclusive authorized Toyota dealer for Tarrant County. Through the years the company continued to grow and now has nine locations throughout North Texas and Kansas City, Missouri. “It is so nice to be recognized by Toyota for this 30-year milestone of working together to meet the material handling application needs of our customers,” stated Jim L. Shoppa, President, Shoppa’s Material Handling. “We have sold and helped maintain thousands of Toyota forklifts but more important are the valuable partnerships we have developed with our customers to not only meet but exceed their material handling and logistics needs,” he added. Today, Shoppa’s Material Handling is one of the largest and fastest growing dealerships in the country. In addition to their anchor Toyota brand, the company now represents a comprehensive line of industrial and warehouse equipment brands, including aerial equipment by Genie and JLG, very narrow aisle (VNA) forklifts by Bendi and Drexel, floor cleaning sweepers 22

Kion adds Spokane Forklift to dealer network KION North America is pleased to announce the appointment of Spokane Forklift & Construction, Inc. to its dealer network. Based in Spokane, they will offer sales and service to parts of Washington, Idaho and Montana. Family owned and operated, Spokane Forklift has maintained a presence in the greater Pacific Northwest since 2007. KION North America is confident that Spokane Forklift is the best dealership in the market to represent their material handling brands Linde and Baoli. "The Linde product line offers unmatched technological advantages over the competition," said Barry Melton, president and owner of Spokane Forklifts. "Whereas the Baoli brand

gives a very competitive price point compared to the rest of the market." As KION North America gears up for the largest new product introduction by a single company in industry history, strategic partnerships with established distributors like Spokane Forklift are critical to their success. HOW-TO

Why most rack systems need end of aisle rack protectors If you pay attention, you may notice on your way to work that there are stretches of road lined with safety guard rails. The purpose of these rails is simple: keep cars from careening off the road or drifting into oncoming traffic. Of course, these guard rails aren’t stationed everywhere; that’d be too expensive, inconvenient and probably unnecessary. They’re located in high traffic areas and stretches of road where cars are typically turning at high speeds. It’s impossible to know for sure, but we can reasonably guess these rails prevent significant damage and loss of life. In a way, end of aisle rack protectors, like the ones manufactured by Wildeck, do for a pallet rack system what safety rails do for the interstate. The areas located around the ends of warehouse rack aisles are some of the busiest and fastest moving areas in the warehouse. It’s where hurried lift truck operators are entering a rack system aisle to make sure an order is picked on time, and where pallets are often staged to be loaded later on. Without end-of-aisle rack protectors in place, the pallet rack uprights that form the end of a row of racking can become mangled and compromise the strength and stability of the entire section of rack.

Today’s lift trucks are heavy, powerful pieces of equipment that typically have heavy duty steel tines capable of dinging almost anything they come into contact with. Even seemingly slow or minor collisions can add up over time to weaken the upright frame column and lacing channels. Even one collision can do damage, but when multiple collisions accumulate, it can quickly become an issue. A common objection we hear from those skeptical about installing rack protectors goes like this: “We probably don’t need them. Fortunately, we haven’t had any collisions yet.” That is fortunate, because if they had, it would’ve done significantly more damage without rack guarding in place. When we use this same reasoning for most of the other safety precautions we take (life jackets, helmets, seat belts?), we might start to rethink the idea of holding off on rack protection until an accident has happened. Being able to plan ahead and budget is nicer than needing to install safety gear on a knee-jerk reaction.

In a fast-paced environment like the warehouse, visibility is key. End-of-aisle rack protectors are painted in a bright, highly-visible “safety yellow” color so they stand out against their surroundings. In a perfect world, lift truck drivers will see the protectors before they hit them. In the real world when a run-in does take place, the rack protectors will deflect the fork truck away from the upright frame and its cargo, saving money, time, and repair work.

Bottom line: be proactive with warehouse safety Nowhere is it more important to be smart and safe than in the warehouse. A key part of that philosophy of safety and preparation is putting protection in place well before it feels urgent or an accident happens that forces immediate action. When it comes to warehouse safety, being proactive is key. That means that if you or your customer has exposed uprights in a high-traffic area, there’s no better time than now to explore installing end-of-aisle rack protectors.

The story with safety drop pins is often a similar one. It’s common to see warehouse managers wait until a beam level and thousands of pounds of product are dislodged before taking an easy and relatively cheap step to secure racking. As with most safety measures, the time to take action is before an incident has happened. Rack protectors are customizable to your warehouse End of aisle rack protectors like Wildeck’s are available both as single left or right units and as single pieces that cover both columns of the upright frame. This offers you the flexibility to use them where and how you think they’ll best protect your uprights. Not everyone’s uprights are the same depth, so endof-aisle protectors are available to cover practically any depth of upright frame, including back-to-back rows. Standard sizes span from 48” to 120”.

BUSINESS PROFILE

Sentry rolls up their sleeves to meet demands Sentry Equipment & Erectors, Inc. is a North American based full-service provider of conveyor equipment and related container handling machinery. Located in Central Virginia, Sentry employs approximately 200 people that specialize in integrating packaging equipment and conveying systems into cost-effective and efficient plant designs. Sentry was incorporated in August of 1980 as a mechanical installation service. Thanks to the drive and vision of Adam and Carole Vinoskey, Sentry Equipment & Erectors, Inc. was soon born. Adam’s philosophy was, and still is, that “quality standards change, but quality does not.” It was this down-to-earth approach of providing a quality product – made in the USA – and literally rolling our sleeves

up at the eleventh hour to help our customers get the job done that has earned Sentry its reputation in the industry. In addition to the 250,000 square foot main facility in Forest, Virginia, Sentry’s robotic group Sen-Pack is located in a beautiful new 66,000 square foot facility in Deland, Florida. There are a number of Robot Integrator and Packaging companies in the industry, each specializing in various robotic applications. Sen-pack is not only experienced with robotic applications, but also product handling. All of our systems are engineered for each customer’s application, speeds and space restrictions. At Sen-Pack we provide an ongoing partnership with our customers to achieve the best possible result at the conclusion of each project. We believe that our team brings a unique combination of experience, equipment and services to the marketplace. Sentry’s corporate culture emphasizes meeting customer’s needs and being their partner for packaging and production line integration. From manufacturing complete systems to providing spare parts – meeting our customer’s demands are top priority. www.sentryequipment.com
