SAFETY CORNER
Managing Worker Fatigue in Forklift Operations
Running a business isn’t easy. Just ask the employees who are out there every day working hard to keep things moving. One of the best ways to make sure your business continues to flow and flow safely is to make sure you and your employees avoid worker fatigue. Fatigue is defined as the state of feeling tired, weary or sleepy. It should be considered a workplace hazard, as it can be a form of impairment. What Causes Worker Fatigue? Worker fatigue can be brought on by many different things. Some of the most common are insufficient sleep, extended work hours, or periods of stress or anxiety. When operating a forklift, some of the causes of fatigue could be the noise, uncomfortable riding surfaces, or insufficient ergonomics. Making sure that your workers have comfortable equipment helps reduce worker fatigue has the ability to enhance operator safety and improve productivity. How does Fatigue Effect Worker Safety? Worker fatigue is not something that can be necessarily “measured”, but some studies show that it does negatively impact certain areas of work. Some of the most noticeable symptoms may be things like reduced decision-making ability, communication skills, less attentiveness, and being unable to stay awake. When you see signs of worker fatigue in employees, take the time to talk to them. Make sure that they are feeling okay. That way they do 8

not become a risk to themselves, other employees or the company. Communication is the backbone of a culture of safety. What can I do to help Reduce Worker Fatigue? There isn’t one answer. Once again, communication is key. Talk with your workers to make them aware of worker fatigue and work together to determine what is affecting them the most. Is it the noise? Maybe having headphones that help block out some of the noise will help. Is it more sleep? Maybe try adjusting your sleep schedule so that you’re able to get the rest you need. Are there lighting issues? You can also look for more ergonomic ways to help keep employees from physically overexerting themselves. The last point I want to talk about is to make sure that you are available to operators and other employees if they need help and have a plan in place so you are prepared. Being available is something that is easy to do, and lets employees know that you want them to stay safe. Just remember, just because one of the techniques works for someone does not mean it will have the same positive effect on someone else. Staying safe in the workplace should always be your top priority. Make sure you are taking all of the necessary steps to help your employees or yourself, to avoid running in to worker fatigue. CREAMER'S CORNER
Squeegee Blade Description: Let’s Simplify the Confusion! It’s all too confusing to the laymen who orders the parts for their sweeper/scrubber. There are many components that make up the machine to achieve efficient scrubbing. First you have the scrub deck component. This is the area where the scrub brushes are housed. The scrub brushes could be cylindrical or disc brush in nature. The disc brush is also known as rotary brushes. This scrub deck component usually houses, if cylindrical style, two brushes. They are located one in front of the other. If equipped with rotary brushes, there could be two, three or four brushes. The number of rotary brushes directly results in the size of the machine. As you are sitting on the machine, the scrub deck is usually located directly under the operator‘s seat. As the machine is moving forward with the solution detergent cleaning the floor by the brushes, there is a tendency of this solution going all over the place, if not for the scrub deck side squeegees. Their purpose is to capture this cleaning detergent and

direct it to the rear of the machine. As one is sitting on the machine, there is a left hand and right-hand scrub deck side squeegee assembly. These assemblies in most cases are made up of two squeegees. In this case the squeegees aren’t that confusing when ordering. They are in most cases referred to as “inside squeegees and outside squeegees”. Some manufacturers, however, use the reference as front and rear. Are you following me so far? It doesn’t really get confusing until we continue back to the rear squeegee. The sole purpose of this component is to capture all the dirty water and solution. At this point it is vacuumed through the rear squeegee hose, aka: rear vacuum hose. The rear squeegee is made up of two squeegees positioned in such a way as to create a vacuum chamber. This vacuum chamber created has great suction power one can only imagine. If you have to order these squeegees by descriptions, this is where it sometimes gets confusing. Of course, it is always best to order your parts via part number. Then there is no mystery. However, some of the cleaning machine manufacturers refer to these squeegees as “front” and “rear” squeegees. For simplicity, I have always referred to these squeegees as “inside” and “outside”. You say, ”Mike, what is the difference”? A great deal I believe. Especially, when you order the squeegees on a Thursday and need them by Friday for the weekend. You always want to make sure you order and receive the correct squeegees. Read this out loud and see how silly this sounds. I want to order the “front rear squeegee, the rear squeegee, both front side squeegees and both rear side squeegees.” You think I am kidding? I’m not and over the years have heard it all. Now let’s try it with inside and outside put into the mix. “I want to order the inside rear squeegee, the outside rear squeegee, and both inside and outside side squeegees”. Now if you are going to go through the process of making sure the descriptions are understandable, you’re going to have the part numbers up front as well. So, this is really an exercise or an article on the correctness of descriptions on a sweeper/scrubber? Yes, it could be. But when you start to look at all the parts it takes to make-up a sweeper/ scrubber, then you can begin to appreciate having the correct description. And I will give you more examples.

May times I have had people wanting to order a hydraulic pump for the sweeper/scrubber. When you ask which hydraulic pump, they either go back to the mechanic and ask or they start to get irritated by your question. Many times, I follow up by saying, there are many pumps on this machine. There is the side brush hydraulic pump, the main brush hydraulic pump, the hydraulic wheel motor and so on. Once they hear this, usually they go back and get you the part number or what the hydraulic pump does or where it is located. All of that information helps if you’re a parts guy or girl. Another good example is when they ask for the filter. Again, you have to ask which one? The engine air filter, the hydraulic filter, the hydraulic tank sump filter, or perhaps the hopper filter. And here is a biggy. When you get “I want to order the brush for our sweeper/scrubber. Again, you have to ask, which brush. The main sweeping brush, the side sweeping brush or the scrub brushes. If scrub brushes, are they cylinder or rotary style? So, in closing, I don’t have to explain to many of you how confusing it can get without the proper description. So, help out your parts guy and yourself, make sure to get him/her the proper description. And by the way, having part numbers are always the best policy.
I hope this has been helpful, and as always thank you for reading. Contact me with any questions. Creamer’s Corner is a monthly conversation with Hi-Gear’s Mike Creamer giving you advice, technical assistance, brand comparisons and on the job stories on repairing, maintaining or replacing your sweeper/ scrubber. Know When to Replace Your Forklift Tires Your forklift plays a significant role in the day-to-day operation of your business. That’s why it’s important that each part of a forklift is maintained in order to reduce downtime and provide operators with a safe and effective machine. One of the most important parts, and often times the most overlooked when it comes to routine maintenance, are the tires. The tires are the foundation of your forklift. They have to be strong enough to take all of the weight of your forklift and the load it’s carrying. Using a forklift with worn tires can not only cause significant damage to your forklift’s wheel, axle or forks, but can also create a dangerous working environment for your operator. Here are some helpful tips to help you recognize the warning signs that your tires are ready to be replaced.
1. Check for Wear Depending on the type of tire you have, it’s important to recognize when your tires are worn and need replacing. Press-on tires usually have the tire size printed on the outside wall of the tire. When the tire wears down to the top of the numbers, it’s time to replace. For an air-filled pneumatic tire, keep an eye on the tread pattern. It’s time to change your tire if it’s worn away or gone bald. Solid pneumatic tires usually have wear marks on the sidewalls. It’s unsafe to allow the tires to be worn below this line. 2. Chunking Just like it sounds. If pieces, or chunks, of your forklift tires are falling off, that’s a very good indication that you need to replace them. Chunking can be caused by debris and litter on the floor, or by driving over rough surfaces. Tires that are missing chunks of rubber can cause the forklift to vibrate or become unstable. 3. Tearing This is similar to chunking. If the rubber on your tires is tearing off in spots, they need to be replaced as soon as possible. Tearing often occurs when a forklift is run over sharp edges on the floor, rough terrain or other hazardous debris. Changing your tires can mean the difference between a safe, productive work environment and lost loads, damaged forklifts, and injured operators. To help get the best performance from your machine and to increase the longevity of your forklift tires, be sure to replace them with a tire that is durable and made of quality materials. As the leading provider of quality replacement parts and accessories for the material handling and industrial equipment industries, TVH has an impressive selection of premium tires for all types, makes and models of equipment. ADVERTORIAL
Static Charges: An overlooked hazard in forklift operations If you ever shuffled across a carpeted floor in your socks and then felt a little “zap” when you touched a metal doorknob, you’ve experienced the shocking effect of static buildup. Now imagine a static charge that builds up to as much as 50,000 V, and you start to appreciate the hazards that many forklift operators face every day. Static BuildUp Static electricity is generated when two dissimilar materials are rubbed together. Insulating materials, such as rubber, are the most prone to accumulating static until it makes contact with a more conductive material. Forklifts using black tires generate static but they’re continuously releasing their potential charge because of the carbon black – a conductive material. The problem with non-marking tires Some applications, however, require non-marking tires: Forklifts that operate indoors, on warehouse floors with light-coloured coating and surface finish or in food processing plants, for instance, are often fitted with non-marking tires. Non-marking tires don’t have this anti-static property since they contain silica in place of carbon black. Where carbon black is conductive, silica is an insulator. As a result, static generated in the tires is stored rather than dissipated. The static continues to build up in the forklift to potentially hazardous levels – enough to spark up a fire in the truck, to wipe out electronic circuits, or to knock down a person who inadvertently touches the equipment.
NEW
Makeshift solutions The industry has tried makeshift methods of dealing with problematic static. Some forklift operators will attempt, among other things, to ground the vehicle by raising the forks or attachment, and slamming it onto the floor. But grounding the attachment does generally not ground the accumulated electricity, no matter how hard you hit it. More commonly, users will attach chains or grounding straps under the truck. But again, their effectiveness is limited. Drivetrains are still insulated from the frame by rubber mounts and bushings. Meantime, the straps and chains tend to gather dust and debris over time that gradually insulates them from the ground, wear down or break off. Solving it at the source
Like most safety issues, the solution to hazards of static electricity must be addressed at multiple levels. The real opportunity for safety is in the hands of tire manufacturers to respond with a new solution. Specialized anti-static tires are available for certain applications, but there have been no non-marking anti-static (NMAS) tires available until just this year. Extensive research and testing has led Camso to come up with a true breakthrough in tire design with the launch of the first patented anti-static forklift tire to resolve the important safety issue of static electricity generated by non-marking tires. Indeed, the Solideal PON 775 NMAS provides a solution to an existing problem that had never really been addressed before.
The world’s first tire to prevent static build-up SOLIDEAL PON 775 NMAS BY CAMSO This innovative press-on tire solves the issue of static build-up generated by non-marking tires, by continuously grounding the truck through the tires thanks to its patented anti-static technology. It eliminates the risk of safety issue, facility hazards and truck damage.

The American Rental Association releases new strategic plan Shaping the equipment and event rental industry To better support the success of its members and advance the equipment and event rental industry, the American Rental Association (ARA) has released a new industry-wide strategic plan that will drive program initiatives over the next three years. This is the first revision to ARA’s strategic plan in more than a decade. The ARA board of directors met for a two-day session led by a professional facilitator to discuss common issues within the industry and discover common themes in which action plans could be developed around. “As the industry continues to grow and change, so do the needs of the members we serve. After nearly two years of research and compiling data, the five key areas where the association can make a significant impact have been identified for inclusion in the strategic plan,” says Tony Conant, ARA CEO. The result is a simple, straightforward plan that communicates with clarity the purpose, focus areas and values that will drive ARA into the future: • Education: Position ARA as the primary source for education and training in the equipment and event rental industry. • Industry Workforce: Raise awareness of careers in rental and ensure a qualified and sustainable workforce for rental business owners. • Technology: Encourage rental business owners to effectively use technology to increase operational performance.
• Market Intelligence: Provide industry metrics, forecasting resources and market intelligence tools for the industry. • Consumer Awareness: Promote the value proposition of equipment and event rental so that consumers think of rental first. ARA president, Kevin Hoffman, says “ARA’s volunteer leadership changes each year and without a multi-year strategy, the direction of the association and its priorities could change frequently. This consistent plan allows staff to advance the priorities set by the membership through board representation. I’m extremely pleased with the outcome and to have worked with bright and talented individuals to establish a plan that will carry the association forward.” “Operationally, the association is doing very well. The ARA Show™ continues to be a success, membership is growing, and our publications division leads the market,” says Conant. “However, these are five major focus areas in which the association can make a significant impact toward the long-term success of the equipment and event rental industry.” About ARA: (www.ARArental.org) The American Rental Association, Moline, Ill., is an international trade association for owners of equipment and event rental businesses and the manufacturers and suppliers of construction/industrial, general tool and party/ event rental equipment. ARA members, which include more than 10,500 rental businesses and more than 1,000 manufacturers and suppliers, are located in every U.S. state, every Canadian province and more than 30 countries worldwide. Founded in 1955, ARA is the source for information, advocacy, education, networking and marketplace opportunities for the equipment and event rental industry throughout the world.

FEATURE STORY
The Silver Lining of Lease Accounting: What Organizations Should Know About the New Standard By Ralph Petta, President and CEO, Equipment Leasing and Finance Association The long-awaited new rules for lease accounting approved by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) go into effect for financial periods starting after Dec. 15, 2018 for public companies, after Dec. 15, 2019 for private companies, and with a modified application for any other financial period presented. As is often the case with change, many organizations transitioning to the new accounting standard, known as Accounting Standards Codification Topic 842 (ASC 842), have questions and concerns about how it will affect their current leases and future equipment financing decisions. Only four percent of public companies report their ASC 842 implementation is complete and 63 percent of non-public companies had not yet completed the initial ASC 842 assessment phase, according to a Q4 2018 survey by PwC. An examination of the impacts of ASC 842 shows that not only are many of the lease accounting changes relatively neutral, there is actually a silver lining with numerous positive impacts. The Upside of Lease Accounting Changes While ASC 842 will initially require new processes and reporting, the benefits of leasing remain and are perhaps improved because of other developments. Combined with changes in the U.S. tax code, lease financing, with its wide range of inherent advantages, will continue to be a beneficial option for equipment acquisitions. ASC 842 is required to be implemented for existing leases, but it provides lessees with a number of ‘practical expedients’ to make the transition less burdensome. If elected, a practical expedient must be applied to all leases and agreements. The FASB has specifically stated that the Lease Liabilities created by capitalizing leases should not be considered debt by most financial institutions. In fact, now that Lease Liabilities will be on the lessee’s balance sheets, the rating agencies will no longer have to calculate it on their own or guess at how much to capitalize; it is now clearly and more accurately measured for them under the new standard. 28

The new rules have no impact on the income statement. There should be no effect on debt covenants. The rules for classifying whether a new contract is a Capital (Finance) lease or an Operating lease are virtually the same as before under generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) except that an Operating lease will now be a Capitalized Operating lease. Although an Operating lease will now be capitalized, the capitalized asset cost by definition will be lower compared to a loan or cash purchase resulting in a lower asset against which Return on Assets would be measured. The business processes required to accommodate ASC 842 also have the potential to reap unexpected advantages. Better information and controls can help enable better tracking and asset management, avoid redundancies and enable the negotiation of better lease terms throughout the organization. Tax Reform Benefits for Financing Tax reform passed at the end of 2017, known as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), introduced many changes that organizations should consider when making equipment financing decisions. TCJA provides more reasons now than previously for leasing or financing property using taxoriented financing structures. The pure complexity of the interrelated rules in TCJA by themselves may lead some organizations to lease. Under TCJA current deductibility of interest expense is limited to 30 percent of the tax version of EBITDA, calculated as Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, (tax) Depreciation and Amortization multiplied by 30 percent. In a few years the limitation will be further reduced to 30 percent of tax EBIT, an even lower number particularly given the high rate of tax depreciation. Additionally, U.S. subsidiaries of multinational parents will also have to contend with BEAT (Base Erosion Anti-abuse Tax), which forces them to further examine the extent of their intercompany borrowing. Leasing helps lessees avoid both the interest and BEAT limitations because rent deductions remain unrestricted compared to interest payments. Leasing allows companies without the ability to
efficiently use 100 percent bonus depreciation to gain the benefits of it through a reduced lease rate when the lessor can claim the 100 percent bonus depreciation. Lessees may also reap an economic benefit by entering into a saleleaseback for an asset they may have expensed 100 percent in 2017 at a 35 percent tax rate since the gain taxed on the sale (assume a 100 percent gain) would now be taxed at a more favorable rate of 21 percent. Benefits of Leasing Continue Undiminished A majority of U.S. businesses finance their equipment acquisitions, and the following long-standing reasons why they do remain intact under ASC 842: • Tax management – Leasing allows lessees to more efficiently manage some of their taxes; when they cannot utilize all the deductions, the lessors can and are able pass the benefits through via lower rates. • Finance 100% - Arrange 100% financing of equipment, software and services with 0% down payment while still recording less than 100% on your balance sheet. • Keep up-to-date and avoid residual value risk: Keep current with technology by acquiring more and better equipment compared to loan financing and avoid residual risk because the lessor assumes that risk. • Accelerate ROI/Improved ROA: Rather than capitalizing 100% of an asset, a capitalized lease is generally reported at a lesser amount. • Cash flow management - Make smaller more manageable and flexible payments while the equipment generates revenue. • Benefit from bundling: Bundle the equipment, installation, maintenance and more into a single, easyto-manage solution. • Save cash: Save limited cash for other areas of the business, such as expansion, improvements, marketing or R&D. • Outsource asset management: The equipment financing company can manage an organization’s equipment from delivery to disposal. • Customize terms: Set customized payments to match cash flow and even seasonal income fluctuations. • Hedge against inflation: Lock in rates with a lease to avoid future inflation.
As organizations modify existing leases or enter into new leases or contracts, they will benefit from an understanding of all the implications of the new standard. It’s important to check with a professional tax advisor or accountant who can address the business’s particular situation. With adequate information and preparation to implement ASC 842, lessees can continue to reap the advantages of financing.
