Know Your Forklift Trip Points Trip hazards are all around us. Heck, just this morning I tripped over three of our five dogs while getting ready for work. While dogs are bigger than your typical, everyday tripping hazard, the point I’m trying to make is that we get so focused on the task at hand that we neglect to pay attention to our surroundings. And in the material handling industry, especially when forklifts are involved, tripping or falling over can mean more than just an embarrassing moment in front of your friends. It can lead to injury or even death in some cases. Don’t worry, though! I’ve compiled a list of potential trip points to keep in mind when operating a forklift. • Steps – The steps of your forklift are used all day long as you enter and exit. The tripping hazards will differ depending on the design of the truck. Be aware of the step height and location as well as any obstructions or changes in elevation that could cause your foot to get caught or you to lose balance. As you enter and exit the forklift, be sure to use a 3-point stance by always having one foot down and each hand gripping a part of the forklift for balance. This is typically the assist grip, overhead guard pillar, or seat. • Pedals – Be sure to take into account the service brake, accelerator, and parking brake pedals when entering and exiting the forklift. Familiarize yourself with their placement, including whether they are floor mounted or pendulum mounted. Always engage the parking brake before exiting the vehicle, as doing so not only ensures any foot-operated parking brake pedals are out of the way, but it is also a safety requirement. • Floorboard – Each floorboard varies in size, shape, and material. Be sure to look out for elevation changes and for any abnormalities that your foot could get caught on. If the floorboard is damaged or its tread has been worn off, be sure to

replace the floorboard or mat before operating the forklift. Always be sure the floorboard and mat are installed properly, as improper installation can create additional trip points. • Forks/Attachments – When walking around a parked forklift, be mindful of what is on the ground around you. Forks and other attachments such as carpet poles and clamps on the front of the forklift create an elevation change at a low height that is easily missed if you are not paying attention. • Options – Some optional equipment can take up additional space in the operator’s compartment and could consequently cause you to trip or fall if you are not aware of its location. This includes floor-mounted heaters/ defrosters, audio/stereo speakers, floor-mounted stands, and hood-mounted accessories like mini-levers and amenity trays. Be sure to enter and exit the forklift on the proper side based on any obstructions that are present and always be aware of the location of all optional equipment. These are just a few of the general trip points you may find on and around forklift. Each forklift is designed differently, so be sure to pay attention to the trip points that may be present based upon your specific configuration. Many of these may seem obvious, but reinforcing these principles can help you to enhance forklift safety. Whether it’s a pair of forks or an Australian Shepard, tripping hazards are all around us. Here’s How to Integrate Analytics Into Your Distribution Center
Distribution centers play a vital role in our supply chains — and supply chains bring essential products to customers all over the globe. It’s probably not an exaggeration to say that without well-run, adaptive and technologically advanced supply chains, there’s little point in designing world-class products to begin with, since they won’t be able to get where they’re going when they’re needed most. Equipping our distribution centers to service a global economy means leveraging high-quality data and putting it to work in analytics systems. But how do you actually integrate these tools — and what’s the competitive advantage? Combine ERP and CRM ERP and CRM are two major technologies that form the backbone for analytics in distribution centers. Without these tools, modern warehouses and other facilities leave useful data untapped: • Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems make back-end tasks and data-gathering far simpler than they would be otherwise. An ERP software suite helps supply chain managers surface and react to a wealth of data — including customer purchases, billing and other historical data, shipping processes and company financial information. • Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems are frontend systems that gather, organize and make real-time data more actionable. Customer interactions, data from marketing campaigns and tracking information are generally major components of CRM systems. Whereas ERP provides analytical and planning tools based on what’s already occurred, CRM systems focus more on reacting in the moment. But the best way to utilize these systems is to combine them. Investing in two separate software packages creates potentially conflicting databases of information. It also creates unnecessary labor in the form of tedious data entry and reconciliation between the two systems. Combining ERP and CRM can also reduce the number of steps between drawing up a proposal for a partner and turning that proposal into an order. Look for Real-Time Analytics Functionality Let’s take a closer look at some of the real-time analytical functionality offered by modern CRM and ERP systems. The ultimate goals for managers in harnessing analytics capabilities in distribution centers revolve around becoming leaner, more agile and more responsive to ever-changing conditions “on the ground.” Here’s what that could look like in practice: 12

• Connected infrastructure and vehicles provide end-to-end visibility on the speed and efficiency of every operation while they’re in motion. Smart technology like this, powered by the Internet of Things, means fewer surprises and faster responsiveness to disruptions. • Automatic notifications can “tip off” decision-makers about business events as well as disruptions and opportunities. • When data is gathered in real-time, it also becomes more useful to partners and clients, who can engage in self-service through digital portals, including accessing historical and current records. • Real-time analytics makes it easy to pick out ongoing trends in demand, pricing, the geographical distribution of your customers and much more. All of this contributes to more accurate forecasting. • The surfacing of real-time data makes collaboration between business divisions and departments — such as customer relations and fulfillment — far easier and more streamlined and cuts down on miscommunication between parties. In a world where Amazon fulfillment centers are the envy, practically by default, of supply chain and distribution center managers everywhere, it’s worth remembering that the retail giant’s endgame involves “predictive shipping.” Once a far-future concept, predictive shipping involves readying customer orders even before those customers commit to clicking the “buy” button. For distribution centers that deal with repeat orders and long-term customers, a system like this is a no-brainer — but it’s not possible without access to real-time operational and analytical data. The more data gathered by operators in a supply chain, the easier it becomes to predict not just when customers will place an order, but also what those orders will contain. Examples of Analytics in Action The world’s supply chains bring together small businesses and major distributors, as well as small-batch and industrial-scale manufacturers. This remarkably complicated web can transport almost anything, which means analytics tools have to cater to a wide variety of product and business types. Telecom companies don’t “ship” physical products — but what are fiber optic cables, if not a distribution mechanism? Even in telecommunications, analytics systems focused on customer trends, real-time interactions and visits to web properties can help shed light on customer churn and helps decision-makers single out opportunities to introduce new types of products and services or make changes to existing ones. Small and large e-commerce companies alike benefit from gathering data on their web properties, such as bounce rates for new and existing customers, the average duration of visits and which products customers purchase after viewing others. Think about businesses that focus on building local client relationships, too. Cars are major expenses that customers don’t take lightly. And neither do dealers, who must carefully plan their marketing budgets to reflect how — and when — customers seek out major new purchases. Automotive companies and local dealers have a lot to gain by peering into data such as how their customers interact with their website, how many reported major life changes since their last purchases, how many frequent local automotive shows or clubs,

If you need more convincing of the merits of bringing analytics into the mix at your distribution center, consider recent research which found that data-centric organizations are: • At least 23 times more likely to grow their customer base • At least 19 times more likely to improve their profitability over time • At least six times more likely to retain new customers for longer If these aren’t compelling reasons to step up your analytics game, we’re not sure what is! We live in a world that’s reeling from the consequences of looking before we leap, producing more product than we need, squandering physical resources on products without proven demand and spending money on marketing and other communication efforts before we know what kind of return we’ll actually get. 2020 Will See Retailers Spending Profits to Optimize Delivery and Logistics
Total e-commerce revenue in 2020 will reach US$3.52 trillion, an explosion that will force retailers to find faster and more convenient modes to reach the final mile and yard, states global tech market advisory firm, ABI Research. In its new whitepaper, 54 Technology Trends to Watch in 2020, ABI Research’s analysts have identified 35 trends that will shape the technology market and 19 others that, although attracting huge amounts of speculation and commentary, look less likely to move the needle over the next twelve months. “After a tumultuous 2019 that was beset by many challenges, both integral to technology markets and derived from global market dynamics, 2020 looks set to be equally challenging,” says Stuart Carlaw, Chief Research Officer at ABI Research. What will happen in 2020: Retailers will trade profits to continue investments in e-commerce explosion: “ABI Research forecasts total e-commerce revenue of US$3.52 trillion in 2020, growing Year-over-Year (YoY) at nearly 19%. This growth depends on ever faster and more convenient modes to reach the final mile and yard in suburban and urban markets, as well as share in rural areas,” says Susan Beardslee, Freight Transportation and Logistics Principal Analyst at ABI Research. This includes the increase of one-day delivery and seven-days-a-week delivery in 2020 to reduce “click-to-door” time and combat the Amazon effect. There is increasing convergence of online and in-store businesses, with brick and mortar positioned as hubs closer to the customer, as well as e-commerce sites directing package delivery to retail outlets. Additive investment will grow in Buy Online Pay in Store (BOPIS) options. China giants Alibaba and JD.com now have greater focus on growth through lower-tier cities, chasing fast growing, third place Pinduoduo’s rural playbook to reach the next 600 million people. Singles Day in China for 2020 will surpass not only all of the U.S. retail holidays (Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday), but 2019’s record-setting US$38.4 billion for Alibaba alone, at a 26% increase YoY. Retailers need to address their increasing costs and consumer expectations through new business models and optimized transportation and logistics methods. “Amazon already felt the financial pressure in 2019, with North American margin compression, as it grew investments in its next-day Prime delivery, expected to impact Walmart as well. Other retailers have been pushed 14

into offering expanded shipping options and reverse logistics in order to compete,” Beardslee says. What won’t happen in 2020: Self-driving trucks: “Despite numerous headlines declaring the arrival of driverless, self-driving, or robot vehicles, very little, if any, driverfree commercial usage is underway beyond closed-course operations in the United States,” Beardslee points out. Alphabet’s Waymo has been in testing mode since 2016. Its latest vehicles are still manually operated by trained drivers. Heavy-duty leader Daimler Trucks’ (DTNA) 2020 Cascadia with Detroit Connect 5.0 will offer Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Level 2 partial automation features, initially with automated braking, steering, and forward lateral control. DTNA just delivered two eCascadias for customer testing. In partnership with Gatik AI, Walmart has been testing “self-driving” Ford Transit vans that are planned for middle-mile deliveries. The vans will also be operated by drivers in the pilot. “Despite the successful primarily manned testing and early revenue operations, there are no known regulatory approvals or fully autonomous methods to address the first and last mile for heavyduty big rigs through challenging urban and suburban locations,” Beardslee adds. Additional cultural acceptance is another factor. Successful revenue-generating routes will remain highway-only for the foreseeable future, with ABI Research not forecasting a material level of SAE Level 4 shipments prior to 2023 in North America. The journey from SAE Level 2, early commercial OEM deployment this year to ubiquitous highly automated Level 4 and fully automated Level 5 is still years away, which does not grab attention or Internet clicks. Many other opportunities, including closed courses (e.g., airports, ports, mines, oil and gas operations, universities, corporate campuses), are early movers, with opportunity growing for altering the role of “drivers” in vehicles equipped with significant AI. Ergonomics for Manual Palletizing Tasks Without pallets, the supply chain as we know it falls apart. Whether they’re the latest RFID-embedded plastics or ancient shreds of wood that barely hang together, pallets are an essential part of the shipping process. Unfortunately, working with pallets can increase the risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), workplace injuries related to pallet work include: • Stress to the lower back from lifting heavy loads (wooden pallets can weigh between 40 and 70 pounds). • Back injuries from bending to wrap pallets in plastic. • Musculoskeletal disorders related to repetitive reaching during pallet-building. • Splinter wounds caused by degraded wooden pallets. • Repetitive motion stresses on soft tissues. These types of injuries can have serious, lasting physical effects, and cause workers to miss days of work for recovery. In fact, musculoskeletal disorders of the type caused by manual palletizing are responsible for 34 percent of all lost work days—at an estimated cost of $20 billion per year in workers’ compensation. Pallets aren’t going anywhere. The question, then, is how can we make working with them safer? There’s good news on this front: Relatively simple material handling equipment can significantly reduce the hazards associated with building, breaking down, and wrapping pallets in the shipping/receiving room.

(The same can be said for lifting and transporting pallets, both loaded and not, but these challenges are beyond the scope of the present article; here, we’d like to focus on safer handling of pallets during active palletizing tasks.) Eliminating the Risks of Building Pallets If you can’t remove an ergonomically risky task from warehouse processes, the best way to protect employees is to introduce an “engineering control.” That is, to change the task, removing the most hazardous movements involved. Let’s review the specific biomechanical motions involved in breaking down a pallet manually: • Workers must reach across the full length of the pallet to remove cartons at the further edge; with repitition, this task becomes an ergonomic hazard. • As workers remove layers of cartons, they must continually bend deeper and deeper, also a risk factor for musculoskeletal disorders. • Work quickly moves toward floor-level, leading to awkward postures. • Each of these exposures combines to create an even greater risk of injury. Note that each of these actions requires the worker to move toward the work rather than bringing the work toward the worker. A self-leveling lift table with a turntable top is all it takes to remove the ergonomic risks, boosting productivity and safety for all palletbuilding and unpacking tasks. The ergonomic power zone lies close to the worker’s body, between the waist and the shoulders. The challenge of ergonomic palletbuilding is that the level of work necessarily changes; it moves lower with each layer of cartons removed, or higher with items added. Self-leveling lift tables allow operators to set one level for the work. As weight is added or removed from the pallet, the table compensates to prevent bending and awkward postures. Meanwhile, a turntable surface allows operators to rotate the pallet while they work. This removes the risk associated with repetitive reaching. When the pallet is complete, the turntable allows the user to wrap the load in plastic without bending, stretching, or circling the unit. Manual palletizing doesn’t have to lead to injuries—and it won’t, with the right self-leveling lift table on your side. Toyota Material Handling Completes North American Integration Process The move combines Toyota’s forklift manufacturing operations with its sales, marketing, and distribution functions. The company remains headquartered in Columbus, Indiana, where the industryleading Toyota Forklift brand has been manufactured since 1990. TMH is led by President and CEO Jeff Rufener, Senior Vice President Tony Miller and Senior Vice President Bill Finerty. “Toyota is more committed than ever to being a complete material handling solutions provider,” Rufener said. “The integration of TIEM and TMHU will allow us to simplify, streamline, and strengthen the entire customer experience. Integrating our teams will improve the flow of information to and from our customers so we can deliver exactly what they need when they need it.”
Robotic Unit Orders Show Growth Over Last Year The Robotic Industries Association (RIA), part of the Association for Advancing Automation (A3), today announced that North American robot unit orders are up 5.2% through the third quarter, compared to 2018 results. So far this year, North American companies have ordered 23,894 robotic units, valued at $1.3 billion. Looking at third-quarter results only, North American companies ordered 7,446 robots, valued at $438 million. Both units ordered and revenue are up 1% in the quarter compared to 2018. The largest driver of the year-to-date growth in units ordered was an increase in orders from automotive OEMs at 47%, followed by plastics and rubber at 15%, and food and consumer goods at 4%.
