SAFETY CORNER

The Top Five Ways A Lithium-ion Battery Makes Your Forklift Safer

As a manager, one of your top priorities is the safety of your workers. OSHA estimates that each year, approximately 85 workers are killed in forklift-related accidents. In addition, 34,900 accidents result in serious injury, with another 61,800 classified as non-serious. One of the hazards workers must contend with when operating forklifts is the battery. New advancements, however, are making forklifts safer to operate, with more companies in the material handling industry investing in lithium-ion technology to power their equipment. Lithium-ion batteries offer several benefits, including increased efficiency, reduced maintenance, and a boosted cost savings. One of the biggest benefits is their enhanced safety features. Below, we’ll explore five ways a lithium-ion battery makes your forklift safer to operate so that you can be assured you’re getting the most out of your investment and protecting your employees in the process. 1. They Don’t Require Watering Because of the way lithium-ion batteries are designed, they do not require watering. Lithium-ion batteries are sealed shut, which require little maintenance to upkeep. Lead-acid batteries are filled with electrolyte (sulfuric acid and water). This type of battery generates electricity through a chemical reaction of lead plates and sulfuric acid. They require regular refilling with water or the chemical process will degrade and the battery will suffer an early failure. Watering a battery comes with several safety hazards, and workers must take great care to minimize any risks. 6

April 2020

Material Handling Network

www.mhnetwork.com

This includes only topping off with water after it’s fully charged and cooled down and being careful not to overfill with water. When the battery is in use, workers must pay careful attention to water levels to account for any water level changes that may occur even after watering the battery is completed. If a spill does occur, highly-toxic sulfuric acid within the battery can splash or spill onto the body or in the eyes, causing serious injury. 2. There Is Minimal Risk Of Overheating One of the greatest safety hazards of using lead-acid batteries is overcharging. When this occurs, it can cause the electrolyte solution in a lead-acid battery to overheat. This then causes hydrogen and oxygen gas to form, which increases pressure inside the lead-acid battery. While the battery is designed to relieve pressure buildup through venting technology, if there is too much gas accumulation, it can cause the water to boil out of the battery. This can destroy the charge plates or the entire battery. Even more dire, if a lead-acid battery overcharges and then overheats, there may not be a way for the pressure generated from the hydrogen and oxygen gas to relieve itself other than by an instant explosion. In addition to causing severe damage to your facility, an explosion can cause devastating consequences for your employees. To prevent this, crews must carefully manage and monitor the charging of lead-acid batteries by preventing overcharging, providing adequate fresh air through a ventilation system, and keeping open flames or other sources of ignition away from the charging area. Due to the Lithium-ion battery structure, they don’t require a dedicated room for charging. One of the best features of a lithium-ion battery is its battery management system (BMS). The BMS tracks cell temperatures to ensure they remain in safe operating ranges so there is no risk to employees. 3. No Separate Charging Station Is Required As mentioned above, lead-acid batteries require careful monitoring and a separate charging station in order to minimize any risks associated with recharging. If a lead-acid battery overheats when charging, it can cause a build-up of dangerous gases, enhancing the risk of an explosion that can cause worker injury or worse.

SAFETY CORNER CONTINUED Therefore, a separate space that has adequate ventilation and measures gas levels is necessary so that crews can be notified in time should hydrogen and oxygen gas levels become unsafe. If lead-acid batteries are not charged in a safe charging room with proper precautions in place, crews likely will not notice unseen, odorless pockets of gases that can quickly become flammable, especially if exposed to an ignition source – something more likely in an unprotected space. A separate station or room that is needed for the proper charging of lead-acid batteries is not necessary when using lithium-ion batteries. That’s because lithium-ion batteries do not emit potentially harmful gases when charging, so crews can plug lithium-ion batteries directly into a charger while the batteries remain inside the forklifts. 4. Forklift Injury Risks Are Minimized Because lead-acid batteries must be removed in order to be charged, this must happen several times throughout the day, especially if you own multiple forklifts or operate over the course of multiple shifts. That’s because lead-acid batteries only last approximately 6 hours before they must be charged. They then require about 8 hours to charge and a cool down period afterward. That means each lead-acid battery only will power a forklift for less than one shift. Battery swapping in itself can be a dangerous act because of the weight of the battery and the use of equipment to move them. Batteries can weigh as much as 4,000 pounds, and material handling equipment typically is used to lift and swap the batteries. According to OSHA, the top causes of fatal forklift accidents involve workers getting crushed by tipping vehicles or between the vehicle and a surface. Using material handling equipment each time to remove, transport and reinstall a lead-acid battery after charging increases the risk of an accident for workers responsible

for managing the forklift batteries. Lithium-ion batteries, on the other hand, can remain in the vehicle while connected to a charger. They also can be opportunity charged, and typically have longer run times at 7 to 8 hours before requiring a charge. 5. Ergonomic Risks Are Minimized Though most forklift batteries require material handling equipment for removal because of their substantial weight, some smaller forklift batteries can be removed by crews. In general, lithium-ion batteries typically weigh less than a standard lead-acid battery. The lower the weight of the battery, the lower the ergonomic risks among workers. No matter the weight, correct lifting and handling is essential to maximizing safety. This includes positioning your body as close as possible to the battery before moving it, and bending your knees slightly before lifting or lowering a battery. It’s also important to get assistance from a co-worker, and if the battery is too heavy, use a lifting device. Not doing so can cause neck and back injuries that can put an employee out of commission for an extended period of time. Final Thoughts Lithium-ion batteries offer many benefits for companies that want to increase efficiency and improve workflow. For companies that prioritize safety in their operations, lithium-ion batteries are especially valuable thanks to their design, which promotes features such as temperature control, simple charging and a lack of watering requirements. Choosing the best electric forklift battery for your business can be an extensive process. Our article, How To Choose The Right Forklift Battery, provides a closer look into the differences among the most common types of forklift batteries, and what you should know when weighing your options so that you can make the best choice for your operations. FEATURE STORY

Leading Through Frightening Times

I’ve often said there are no two consecutive good days in the life of a leader. It’s a statement designed to get people’s attention, and it usually does—I often have a lot of people wanting to follow up with me after I’ve shared it during teaching. What it boils down to is this: the more you grow in leadership, the more challenging and difficult the decisions you face. Those decisions often involve things with immediate or concrete solutions, but sometimes, they involve things that aren’t as cut and dried. Sometimes, you have to lead your people through uncertainty. And as a leader, that means you have to be the rock in frightening times. Over my decades of leadership experience, through organizations large and small, I’ve encountered my fair share of frightening times, either for the organization itself or for the world at large. Let me be the first to tell you, leaders feel fear too. We’re not bulletproof; we’re human like everyone else. But leaders also understand that they have a higher expectation of them, a responsibility to the people the lead. As my friend Mark Cole says, “It’s okay to feel fear. It’s not okay to make your people carry it.” Over the last several days, fear has been at the forefront of many a news story. Whether we’re talking about the sudden stock market plunge or the coronavirus or the upcoming election season, the uncertainty of life has intruded into our active thinking and frightened many people. I know we’re dealing with some of those fears in our own organization, and chances are you’re dealing with them as well. 10

April 2020

Material Handling Network

So how should we lead in frightening times? 1. Be a visible presence. When times are challenging, leaders need to be seen and felt. It’s not the time to retreat and try to figure things out behind closed doors; your people are looking for someone who can calm their fears with a reassuring look or a friendly hand. You must put yourself forward as someone that people can talk to or turn to when their fear seems overwhelming. It may mean you accomplish little else for a time, but it will be exactly what your people need. 2. Acknowledge the fear, but don’t empower it. Max Dupree said the first responsibility of a leader is to define reality—that means acknowledging what’s really going on around us. WE cannot lead through frightening times if we’re unwilling to acknowledge that people are scared, or that the situation itself is frightful. But we can never leave our people stuck in that fear because that only gives the fear greater power in their minds and hearts. Place the fear in the right context and communicate your belief that better days are ahead. 3. Paint a brighter picture. Part of how you get people to believe that better days are ahead is by painting that picture for them. When things are frightening, the world seems small and dark; to counteract that, you must paint a picture that’s bigger and brighter. We must point beyond the fear to a brighter day, to remind people of what the Psalmist said: “Nights of crying your eyes out give way to days of laughter.” Leaders must communicate to their people the hope on the other side of the fear. 4. Be cautious with predictions, but generous with hope. When you’re trying to help your people look beyond the fear, be wary of trying to predict exactly how things will work out. The simple truth is you don’t know, and that’s okay. Your people don’t expect you to see the future—they just expect you to help them get there, and that’s where being generous with hope comes in. If you’re still pushing toward the next, still reaching for the brighter day beyond the clouds, that gives them the energy they need to make it another day. In the end, they’ll remember you helped them find their way more than they’ll remember the way itself. They’ll recall your presence more than your prescience. The unique challenge of leadership is making today work for tomorrow, especially when today seems to

FEATURE STORY CONTINUED threaten that there won’t be a tomorrow. But the only way there won’t be a tomorrow is if we give in to the fear today. Leaders, your people are looking to you to help them find the security and strength that will allow hope to take root in their life. It’s a significant task, but one that you’re capable of if you’ll stay visible, present, realistic, and hopeful. In all my years of leading, I know this for sure: fear never lasts unless you feed it. As a leader, it’s your job to starve fear by feeding people hope and showing them a better picture of what’s ahead. Give your people the hope they need to hold on.

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

A Change Will Do You Good: Nine Steps to Lead Your Team Through Uncertain Times

If there is one thing about business that doesn’t change, it’s that business will always change! Be it through the advent of new technology, loss of a key employee, new laws that govern the way your industry does business, or even a takeover by another company. No matter what the change may be, the last thing your team wants to hear from you is … “Ok, now what do we do?” An effective leader will need to lead their team through any change that should occur and do so with confidence to inspire others to be confident as well. The transition should be as smooth as possible and be done so in a way that looks as if the change were already expected. Employees and contractors may feel unsure and fearful about any new direction a business may be taking or change they are forced to deal with; so as their leader, their cues as to how to act and how to feel will come directly from you. As such, it is important that you have a solid action plan in place to deal with just such a scenario. Below are nine tips to help you when leading your team through uncertain times: 1. Know that the path to the eventual goal is not always a linear one. As a team is dealing with change in the workplace, it is not as simple as announcing it, adapting to it, and moving toward goals. Employees and even leaders may have changing feelings about the process and that is normal. Recognizing and addressing these concerns as they arise is a healthy way to deal with them and is expected in a situation that may feel full ofturmoil or even traumatic at times.

14

2. Identify key leaders and stakeholders early in the process. As the process of change begins it is important to identify those in your team who represent true leadership qualities. They can be seen as stakeholders in the process and support you in your efforts to lead the team through the change and onto greater success. These individuals will be crucial in helping to instill confidence and keep the team moving together toward the stated goals. 3. Construct a solid plan. Even small changes need a plan. That plan should address changes in processes, products, and expectations of the people involved. If a change is drastic, you might have to construct an entirely new business plan. Creating a plan and sharing it with your team will go a long way toward giving them a feeling of stability as they move together in this new business environment. 4. Identify goals clearly. Failing to communicate clearly defined goals is one of the worst errors people can make when leading change. If employees don’t have a firm sense of what they are moving toward, they may end up just … moving. Clearly define objectives and how you will support your team in meeting them. Your key stakeholders as identified above will play a vital role here as they lead by example in making decisions and actions that support accomplishing these goals. 5. Continually define and redefine the change as necessary. During a time of uncertainly, rumors abound. When your team doesn’t know some aspect concerning the change at hand, they will begin to speculate. This can lead to confusion, worry, and employees looking elsewhere for employment. The best plan of action is to be upfront and communicate with your team any information you have as you get it. Simply knowing what is going on will instill confidence and quell fears, even if the information is not all that good to begin with. 6. Don’t discount the past. Oftentimes, new changes mean discarding the old ways of doing things, and projects once seen as vital are “kicked to the curb” so to speak. This can leave those

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT CONTINUED team members who worked on such projects feeling slighted and that their contributions were worthless. An effective team leader will highlight such projects and give credence to past accomplishments as jobs well done, while at the same time leading the team into the new direction. 7. Don’t hide the challenges. There will be times when even an effectively created plan will hit a stumbling block, or even come to a screeching halt. Don’t hide challenges when they occur; instead, share them with your team. They may have valuable input and will feel more invested in helping to overcome any obstacles as you bring them into the discussion. 8. Carefully listen to all concerns. One issue that many leaders fail at is truly listening to their team. They may take a “this is the way it is now, so deal with it” approach and this can do much to lower morale and make team members feel defeated in an already scary situation. Instead, make yourself available to your team and listen to them. Sometimes, simply venting about the changing environment will do wonders to help someone deal with what is going on. And other times, their insight could be invaluable in helping you do your job as well. 9. Clearly state new or adjusted performance objectives. Of all the things that will affect the changing workplace environment, uncertainty among team members can be the greatest obstacle to overcome. One way to combat that early on is to clearly state any changes in performance objectives and reviews. Employees will want to know exactly how and when they will be reviewed and what criteria will be a factor as well. This will allow them to focus on their own objectives and give them a sense of confidence as they move through the changing environment. Change can be scary, full of surprises, and extremely challenging at times. But, if you have a plan of action, communicate effectively with your team, and move towards new objectives with confidence and a team that is committed as well, you can survive and even thrive in the new adjusted business environment. FEATURE STORY

Securing Funding For Your Small Business

Busting the Three Biggest Myths about the Small Business Administration Given that politics are always a hot topic, you’ve likely heard plenty from both political parties about how government at all levels simply doesn’t work. That’s not a new complaint, and just about everyone can share a story about some government nightmare they’ve endured. But there’s a federal agency that bucks the trend: The Small Business Administration. The SBA enjoys broad support from all corners of the political spectrum—and deservedly so. That’s because the SBA, which dates to 1953, fulfills its mandate of helping small businesses. Don’t believe me? Google it. Sure, you’ll find scattered complaints, but the SBA generally gets strong reviews. That said, the SBA doesn’t always get the credit it deserves and there’s a lot of misinformation going around as well, especially among entrepreneurs who are missing out on strong financing possibilities. Let’s talk about three of the biggest myths surrounding the SBA. The SBA lends money. Although the SBA can directly lend money in cases of disaster, that’s not its main role when it comes to lending. 24

April 2020

Material Handling Network

www.mhnetwork.com

Instead, it serves as a government guarantee program for banks and nonbanks. That means it essentially serves as a backup to lenders who might otherwise not be interested in making loans to smaller and/or unproven businesses—it offers guarantees up to 85% for loans up to $150,000 and 75% for loans bigger than that. Because lenders are less likely to endure the full brunt of defaults, they’re more likely to make loans to unproven businesses. The SBA does set requirements and application process details. Applications will require personal background information, a business plan, personal and business credit reports, income tax returns, bank statements, and a resume, among other things. It’s also possible personal or business collateral is required. One benefit for you, the borrower, is that the loan terms tend to be longer (up to 10 years) and require smaller monthly repayments because of good interest rates. The SBA is only for mom-and-pop shops. Mom-and-pop shops are definitely among the kinds of businesses the SBA is looking to help, but they can also work with much larger businesses. Through its flagship 7(a) program, SBA-backed loans can be as large as $5 million for needs such as working capital. And through its lesser-known 504(b) program, as much as $12.8 million can be obtained for businesses seeking to buy real estate or major equipment. A $5 million loan, not to mention a $12.8 million loan, is way above what a mom-and-shop needs. While there’s no one-size-fits-all template for a typical SBA loan customer, most are businesses that are going to have anywhere between $50,000 and $5 million in annual revenues and up to 40 employees. Those businesses are likely to be cash flow positive and are profitable. Of course, if mom and pop need a loan, small amounts are available, too. There are no minimum guaranty amounts for any SBA loan program. My banker didn’t tell me about SBA-backed loans or said I’m not qualified, so I’m out. Not to fear: You’re most likely not “out.” There are about 2,200 banks and nonbank lenders through the United States who write SBA-backed loans. Each one uses the program differently and requires varying qualifications. Thus, even if one lender rejects you, it doesn’t mean

FEATURE STORY CONTINUED that all will. It’s always worth trying another lender (or two or three) if you get rejected—advice that applies when seeking non-SBA loans as well. If you go to a doctor and don’t like what he/she says, you may try another physician, so why not do the same here? In addition, there may be other reasons why your initial lenders may not tell you about SBA loans. Perhaps they’re ignorant about the program. Or maybe their employer doesn’t give them incentives that make them want to push SBA loans; remember, your banker is trying to make a living, too, and might push you toward more profitable options for his/her own pockets. It might even be something as simple as your banker is lazy: Lining up an SBA loan usually does require more documentation than a regular loan. And large banks often aren’t interested in making small loans, which can be less profitable and more risky than larger loans. So, if you get rejected for an SBA loan by a large bank, try a smaller bank, which may well specialize in the program and have lenders well-versed in the process. Hopefully, I’ve cleared up misconceptions about the SBA and its lending programs. These programs work, as many business owners will attest, and there’s little to no downside in at least considering an SBA loan the next time you need funding.
