F
orklift accidents can be traced to two causes – operator error, which is due to a lack of training, and defective equipment. In both cases, the employer can be held liable in a lawsuit when an employee sustains injury from a forklift regardless of cause.
operator error and could have been avoided. An earlier NIOSH report indicated that better trained lift truck operators reduced their rate of error by 70% (documented in the Journal of Safety Research, Vol. 15, pp 125-135, 1984).
It is the responsibility of the employer to be certain that all lift trucks are safe, free of repair or defect, and that all operators are “trained and authorized,” as required by the OSHA Federal Regulation 1910.178.
Factory Mutual Engineering and Research reviews the statistics of one major commercial property insurance company, reporting 86.8 million dollars of damage over a 10 year period to warehouses and plants due to the improper, careless operation of lift trucks.
Operator training does not necessarily have to represent a major expense. It should be viewed as a means to control costs since defending even a single unjustified lawsuit would easily outstrip the expense required to provide the appropriate safety training at the outset. Safety training courses should focus on those areas of greatest risk. One of the most common causes of forklift accidents involves the operator driving too fast, particularly when moving a heavy load. This is an example of the type of accident that can be avoided by clearly establishing a comprehensive operator training program that complies with the elements of the Federal Regulation. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has reported that there were over 34,000 injuries requiring emergency room treatment as a result of lift truck accidents in 1985 alone. Many of these injuries resulted in severe, incapacitating injuries and some in the death of the operator (documented in the Journal of Safety Research. Vol. 18, pp 179-190, 1987). The overwhelming majority of these accidents resulted from

Lessons from a Blind Man By: Mike Marchev
T
hat is the common response I hear when I ask clients why they are not attempting to remain more visible in their marketplace. “I don’t want to be a nuisance� is a close second.
If I were a betting man, I would bet along the lines of new blinds for the Marchev household before too many more full moons.
Recently I was asked where I get my ideas for articles, blog posts and webinar fodder.
1. I was clearly a “shopper.â€? Shoppers are good things. I invited the guy into my home, and he did not shoot himself in the foot. I was already thinking of blinds. He did not have to sell me anything. He had every opportunity to screw things up. He did not. 2. First impressions are important. Clean, polite, thorough, knowledgeable. Bright. Brief & Gone. You don’t ever want to over-do your stay. People are busy. 3. You never know when you might be called upon for a measurement. Dress and act accordingly. He had no idea I was watching. A poor initial visual and he woould not have had a chance. People are always watching. Consider yourself warned. 4. Call people back if you say you will. Strike while the iron is hot. If you can’t do it ‌ don’t say it. If you say it ‌ do it. I would hope he has me on his follow-up list.
The answer is “everywhere.â€? “Everyday.â€? All you have to do is keep your eyes and ears open and be receptive to worldly input. Such was the case yesterday. I received a GREAT reminder from a blind man. Not a blind man, but a blind man ‌ a guy who sells blinds.We spotted his truck out in front of our condo and since my wife has already begun kicking new kitchen window treatments around in her mind, we called over the rail and asked the gentleman to stop by for a measurement before he left town. He was well spoken ‌ cleanly attired in jeans and a short sleeve buttondown shirt. He extended his hand promptly with his name to follow and a favorable first impression was in the bank. He measured. He took notes. He was history within 5-minutes, but not before promising to get us a number we could chew on early the following morning. A few minutes after nine this morning my phone rang. True to his word, it was Dave The Blind Man with a quote and an invitation to call back with any questions. He simply did as he said he would. I liked that.
The lessons here are numerous.
There are probably more lessons to be learned from the Blind Man, but let it suffice to say that if you keep your eyes open and you are ready to pursue opportunities when they present themselves, (on their terms) you too just might become a success worth writing about. Extending the Life of a Reman Engine... By: John Gelsimino Jr. of All Industrial Engine Service
U
pon purchasing a reman engine your dealership is forming a partnership with the engine supplier. Each party must perform their part to ensure that the engine provides thousands of hours of service. Proper installation, break-in and preventative maintenance is critical to an engine’s long term performance. The following will cover proper engine installation and engine maintenance.
for each engine, consult your service manual for engine specific times for valve lash and head bolt re-adjustment. WARNING: Failure to re-torque the cylinder head may result in a blown head gasket. ProPer engine installation The first step of engine installation is the inspection prior to installation. The technician should check for freight damage or dirt contamination.
ProPer engine Maintenance In normal operations, periodic engine maintenance should be performed every 250/300 running hours. This maintenance should include but is not limited to:
The following is a list of accessories/ procedures that should accompany the reman engine: • Clean, flush, pressure check radiator. • New water pump, radiator hoses and new radiator cap. • New thermostat. • Clean out the intake manifold and check muffler for residual oil. • New motor mounts • New or rebuilt starter/inspect fly wheel ring gear for wear • New air and oil filters • New spark plugs, wires & distributor cap Break-in period is the next critical area. Be sure the engine is properly lubricated before startup. Upon starting check oil pressure and running temperature which are essentially the vital signs of an engine. CAUTION: Never add cold water to the cooling system while the engine is hot. The first five minutes of engine operation determines the longevity of the reman. First adjust the distributor timing and then adjust the fuel system. Always check for oil leaks first. Adjust the governor to the proper RPM. Consult factory specifications for engine specific governor RPM settings. Make sure the fan blade is on facing the correct direction. Some blades can bolt up in either direction. Run at fast idle, approximately 1500 RPM, for 30-60 minutes. NOTE: Applying a load to the engine for short periods of time increases piston ring pressure against the cylinder walls and helps the piston rings seat. This is important because you are “breaking-in” the engine with heavy duty oil left-over from assembly. Upon rapid deceleration, vacuum increases and provides extra lubrication to the piston and ring assemblies. After sufficient time at operating temperature valve lash must be adjusted and the cylinder head re-torqued. Times vary
• Changing engine oil and toppingoff all fluids • Changing air and oil filters • Blowing-out the radiator to pre-vent overheating. • If applicable, inspect and/or replace timing belt. Timing belt failure can result in major engine damage. This is a high maintenance item and should be watched closely upon each PM service. • Tune-up engine • Check valve lash to prevent excessive valve train wear • Check governor setting and adjust fuel system. • Check and record hour meter reading

Lean And Resilient: The New Automotive Supply Chain Hybrid
A
new white paper commissioned by Exel and its sister company DHL Supply Chain makes the case for re-evaluating the automotive industry’s approach to its supply chains and logistics, and encourages companies to ask themselves, ‘What if?’ to avert a crisis tomorrow. Today’s supply chains must be ever more resilient and agile in order to survive the ‘butterfly effect’ – where a small change at a localized point in the supply chain can result in much wider consequences for the business, such as loss of customers or brand reputation, and billions of dollars off their bottom line. “Lean and resilient: the new automotive supply chain hybrid” is a report by Lisa Harrington, President of the lharrington group LLC, prepared in collaboration with Exel. Harrington is also Associate Director of the Supply Chain Management Center and lecturer of supply chain management at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland.

ell, here we are in the conclusion of the Tennant Model 8300 Sweeper/Scrubber. We discussed, as you may recall, the workings of this sweeper/scrubber as it relates to the everyday operation and performance. You may remember that this machine is a sweeper/scrubber. It is a machine which you can sweep, scrub or do both simultaneously. In my last article we discussed the methodology of sweeping and scrubbing. What the best practices were when cleaning. Finally, in this article we are going to discuss 2 things: #1 Pre-Operation Checklist and #2 Post-Operation Checklist

Because just hopping on the equipment and cleaning is not going to happen, an operator must be very diligent with both lists. Check over the list of items below before operating the machine. PRE-OPERATION CHECKLIST 1. Check the hydraulic fluid level (if this applies to your machine) 2. Check the battery fluid and charge level. 3. Check the tank cover seals for damage and wear. 4. Clean the vacuum fan inlet filter. 5. Check the condition of the scrubbing brushes.
Please remove any string, banding, plastic wrap or other debris wrapped around them. Check the squeegees for any damage, wear and/or deflection adjustment. Check the vacuum hose for debris or blockage. Extended Scrub machines: check the detergent tank level. Drain and clean the recovery tank. Extended Scrub machines need to drain & clean the solution tank and ES filter. Rinse level sensors. Check the brakes and steering for proper operation. Empty and clean the debris tray (if this applies to your machine). Check that the solution tank is filled with clear cool water only and with the proper detergent.
POST-OPERATION CHECKLIST 1. Check the hydraulic fluid level (if this applies to your machine). 2. Check the wire, string or twine wrapped around the brushes. 3. Check the battery fluid and charge level. 4. Check the vacuum fan inlet filter. 5. Check the condition of the scrubbing brushes. D
ealership statistics tell us that half of our employees should be technicians. With that in mind, we’re going to focus on ways to help keep up morale with your technicians (and other team members). Ruling vs. Leading Everyone has a different management style. How you respond and interact with people makes the biggest impact on your department. Ruling with an Iron Fist instills fear, but not always respect. Using the Velvet Touch makes you look like a pushover. Ruling people does not create any creativity, nor does it empower people to take responsibility. They just “do what they’re told”. You have to find the best balance you can for the team around you. Some people need to be pushed and even prodded at times; other people need the independence to grow and prosper. A good leader is not afraid that someone is learning and growing. Leaders help build the next generation of the company, they won’t tear it down. Training Have you ever had that moment where you felt powerless to help someone? There’s nothing worse than feeling like you can’t help and provide service, especially in a customer service industry. Now, imagine coming face to face with a customer only to tell him
that you can’t fix his lift. Why? Because… there are many generations of lifts out in the market place along with competitors units, so it’s impossible to be an expert on everything. With your own equipment, what are you doing to help your technicians understand how to work on that equipment? Do you have a trainer on staff? Are you taking advantage of web and factory based training programs? Some training might be expensive and time consuming. However, empowering your technician base to learn and grow will help build loyalty and confidence in working on the equipment. It will also help make them more efficient, which means that quoted jobs might be completed quicker and you can take advantage of increased service billing. Wages Not everyone is driven by money, although it is a contributing factor for most of our life decisions. While we’re not going to discuss wages directly, there’s more to compensation than just an hourly wage. What do you do differently from the competitors in your area? Do technicians get to take their vans home? Do you have a 401(k) match? Do you offer different or better insurance? How you communicate these advantages when approached about either an increase or a counter offer by an employee can be huge. Have you ever shown someone what your companies 401(k)
match means to them? You probably have people in your dealership that have worked for other companies. Have you asked them how your benefits package compares to other companies? This may not always outweigh the bump in wage someone is looking for, but you need to communicate it so the employee can make an informed decision. Establish the Standard No one likes trying to hit a moving target. Expectations and goals can change, but you have to effectively communicate the standards that you’re looking for. It’s not enough to say that you expect someone to keep their van organized and clean. You need to show them an example of what is and is not acceptable. When was the last time you explained what was expected on a PM? While everyone has a PM checklist, does every one of your technicians go through that entire checklist? Have you outlined billing and time expectations for your technicians? Establishing a baseline means that everyone knows where they need to be. Some will exceed, others will hit the target and still others will be off. Following these simple guidelines will make everyone understand what is expected of them. Craft Equipment Introduces New Waste Reduction Service Truck At Waste Expo

they will understand why you’re talking to them about the matter. You won’t hear, “Well I didn’t know that” from your technicians. Setting the standard will make everyone understand the goal of the department. Build a team Sometimes work can be a throwback to high school. People have a tendency to form cliques and be comfortable with certain people. Not all personalities mesh together. If your team isn’t working together, then you have fragmented groups that will rely on each other instead of everyone working together. One technician should not be afraid to call another if they feel they’ve encountered a similar problem before. Dispatchers should also communicate with one another and understand strengths and weaknesses in the team. You need to rely on others (read: delegate). You need team captains because you can’t be everywhere at all times. The more cohesive the unit, the better you’ll be at servicing your customer and
You can’t make everyone happy all the time. No matter how good you are, you’ll have people who move on, whether it is for money or any number of other reasons. Incorporating changes to your team and helping them acclimate to your team culture is just as important as how you create that culture. Keep in mind, there is not a “one size fits all” for these scenarios, just as there is not a “one size fits all” for managing people. A wise person told me a long ago, “I manage everyone the same, which means I manage everyone differently.” While the expectations that you set up should remain the same for everyone in the department, every individual personality will need to be managed differently to have a huge effect on morale. Concept Workstation
Cabka-IPS, a manufacturer of plastic pallets and containers for sustainable use, has added container pallets to its successful line of products. The new size 1,140 x 1,140 mm (Nest C5.2), augmenting the existing pallets in size 1,100 x 1,100 mm Nest C5. The large Nest C5.2, is available as a nestable pallet with nine feet or in a version with six clip-on runners. This pallet is a real space-saver: 15 empty pallets stack to a height of just one meter. This permits dense storage and economical transport of empties. The result is lower shipping costs and re-duced CO2 emissions.
