“Train The Trainer...” Certification or Confusion

on’t be fooled by the incorrect term CERTIFICATION when the correct or proper term is CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION. Many training companies boldly advertise and offer a “train the trainer” certification class that hands you a certificate of completion at the end of their course. There are no accreditation or mandated certification qualifications in order to be a trainer or instructor. There are no government or private agencies that have been approved, endorsed or empowered with certain standardized credentials or qualifications to train instructors and then issue trainer certifications.

The above excerpt does not reference or imply the term CERTIFICATION. The word “TRAINING” can imply many meanings since the word is not defined. We can assume “on the job training” would qualify a person doing the training if they are experienced, capable, competent and knowledgeable of the specific equipment and application. The OSHA regulation 1910.178, Powered Industrial Trucks, revised 6/2/2003, paragraph (L)(2)(iii), “Operator Training”, clearly states: (l)(2)(iii) All operator training and evaluation shall be conducted by persons who have the knowledge, TRAINING, and experience to train powered industrial truck operators and evaluate their competence.

What Are You Smoking? GM 4.3L Analyzed

By: John Gelsimino Jr. of All Industrial Engine Service Have you ever had a customer with a dirty environment? Have you ever seen a forklift that uses the GM 4.3L engine? Only if you’re in the forklift business! You may also have had experience with dirt and debris dusting a customer’s engine. Some engines and accessories are more prone to air leaks which can be the killer of any new or remanufactured engine. When an engine is dusted it creates a serious liability for the party that installed the engine. Since topics regarding the GM 4.3L engine have been a huge success I thought I would outline several critical areas that are prone to ingesting dirt and how smoke testing an engine after installation can solve this problem. What is DUSTED? It is the failure of an engine due to dirt ingestion. When an engine has an air leak on the intake side of the engine it can turn your engine into a vacuum cleaner. Any air leak after the air filter will allow dirt to enter the engine and rapidly wear out the engine’s core components. What is SMOKE TESTING? It is a smoke diagnostic machine that fills the intake system with pressurized smoke. When performed with the engine off, it is as

simple as looking for smoke to find your leaks. Smoke diagnostic machines come in many different makes and models. Ask your local tool guy for a price and opinion as to which machine is best for you.

We have found leaks around the EGR valves across all tier level configurations.

•

Trucks with the big fancy Cyclone Super-Duty High Velocity – Extra Volume Pre-Cleaners mounted at the top of the overhead guard (OHG) can still have problems. We have found smoke coming out of the taillights, filter sealing surface to OHG and even tapped holes in the side of the OHG that are left open from the factory. Doesn’t it seem strange to have a $4 million dollar precleaner and immediately after that have direct paths to the filter? Remember that most OHG’s are used to channel the air into the filter because this is the highest point away from the ground to intake air.

We witnessed air cleaner hoses and PCV connections that were pressed on good and tight but would leak if they were not properly clamped.

•

Here is a good one – a brand new mixer out of the box had loose internal bolts.

I know what you’re thinking – “If I need to find an air leak I’ll just spray 17 cans of carb clean, brake clean or ether around the intake areas and listen carefully. I don’t need some fancy machine” Just to remind everyone – the new tier 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 GM 4.3L engines are computer controlled with fancy mixers and throttle bodies that have more areas to seal and leak. The computer also compensates for so many different variables that you may never notice a small leak that could completely destroy your engine. We have recently worked with a customer who has a large fleet of forklifts that run the GM 4.3L engines. They have several areas in their facility where there is a super fine abrasive powder constantly in the air. By using a smoke tester on several different units we have learned volumes as to where the GM 4.3L engines are capable of ingesting dirt and debris. The following is a list of our findings in no particular order:

The tier 2 o-ring and sleeve that seal the mixer base and throttle body have also been found to leak at the seam. Be sure to replace both the bushing and o-ring after disassembling these items. (See Photo Below)

The tier 3 mixer doesn’t come with the fitting - only a plug on the air horn side. This customer’s technician removed the plug and forgot to move the plug to the open hole on the other side. This completely destroyed a new engine in 24 hours. So remember to re-install the plug when you swap your fittings. (See Photo Below)

Engine failures due to dirt ingestion are easy to diagnose. The cylinder walls will have a ridge or sometimes in severe cases one ridge for each piston ring. When looking at the lower portion of the cylinder bore you will see the exact area where the oil control ring stops. It will look like the cylinder wall has been glass beaded and below the line will be the perfect cross hatch. The other sure sign of dirt ingestion can be found on the valve stems. Swirl like patterns and or wear ridges could be seen on most all of the valve stems. Dirt does not discriminate – once it gets into the manifold it is distributed evenly in each cylinder depending on the manifold design.

This customer also believes that over changing the air filter in harsh environments is a bad idea. He runs an air flow gauge on all of his trucks and feels that some restriction of the filter is actually a good thing. Only when the air flow gauge indicates a restriction will they change the air filter. I cannot confirm this as a best practice but I thought it was interesting to at least mention and could be something for everyone to consider.

Customers find it hard to believe that one simple air leak can completely wipe out a brand new or reman engine. For this reason we are strong advocates of smoke testing all engines after installation. There is no better way to make sure that everything is air tight and that your profit on the job is protected from future dirt ingestion liability. If you have a customer that is experiencing dirt ingestion failures – consider the smoke tester – you’ll be shocked at what you find. The GM 4.3L engine will be around for many years to come and you are bound to eventually run in to these types of problems. allas was hosting Denver one Sunday and the experts were expecting a real shoot-out. Little did they know that the score would be knotted at 48 going into the final moments. Two quarterbacks were playing their trade while it appeared that two defensive units were playing “Marco Polo” on grass. My message today involves the “losing” quarterback. He was good. But not when it counted. This guy did everything right for most of the game. Allow me to remind you that most does not translate to 100%. He was putting on an exhibition of how to be a top-rated QB in the NFL for 95% of the game. He goes by the name Tony Romo. But … even with over 500 yards passing (a Dallas Cowboy club record) and 48 points on the board, one ill-timed interception was all it took to ruin a nice day’s work. In fact, Mr. Romo ended up on the losing side of the score card thanks to that errant flip of the wrist. He was good. But he was not quite good enough. One single mistake at the end of the game was all he needed to end his joy ride.

You too are playing a contact sport. You too will get knocked down on occasion. You too will have some questionable calls go against you. But the secret is to get into a position where you can win in the end, and not run out of time, and not elect to do something foolish.

The Clarke American SC 7740 Sweeper/Scrubber By: Micheal Creamer

he American Lincoln SC7740 is one of those machines that are just perfect for building up to approximately 200,000 square feet. It sweeps and/or scrubs independently of one another, which is a feature I would always recommend. So, when I received this e-mail saying they had purchased a used machine. I was very excited for them. As I responded to this e-mail, I stated “If you would ever want a good candidate to purchase used, this is on my list.... There are all kinds of summations I can make, but in a nut shell, here they are... 1. It is a sweeper/scrubber.

You can do this by opening the broom doors on both sides of this machine After reviewing the pictures and his general input on how the engine ran, I responded as follows: “With 800 hours on it as you indicated and no maintenance records, I always assume the worse and would recommend the following action be taken... 1. Replace the main broom and side broom. Being a large warehouse you can replace them with Polyurethane. The three scrub brushes can also use poly. See how you like them for the first time and we can look at the next time they need to be ordered.

2. It is equipped with not one, but two models of Kubota engines. One is a three cylinder with plenty of power. The other a four cylinder with even more. Either one is perfect for the machine.

2. Replace all the skirts. This would include the main broom chamber and all the hopper skirts.

3. The small size makes this machine very maneuverable in any factory setting. Don’t be fooled by this either; just 47” (about 4’) wide by 89” (about 7-1/2”) long makes this machine a real work horse by size.

4. Replace the rear squeegees, both inner and outer. I like Urethane over gum, however, the price is about three times more. Urethane wears like iron and holds up to any chemical. However, if you want first to get it in working order, use gum rubber, for now.

Later in this e-mail, he stated that no manuals were provided with the machine and he needed help with parts look-up. So, I told him to e-mail pictures of the machine and also include the engine compartment. I

3. Replace all the side (both left and right) squeegees. Just the standard gum rubber should suffice.

5. Replace the hopper filter. I would replace it with first the standard paper filter.

Next I would tell you to follow the general maintenance in the manual that I would provide. Listed below are the important ones... 1. Empty the dirty water tank and spray out the tank with a pressure washer if you have one, if not use a garden hose. Make sure you open the clean-out door to allow the liquid and debris to leave the tank. 2. Change the motor oil whether it looks good or not. Remember you do not know when it was last changed. After this the oil should be changed every 200 hours. 3. Change the spark plugs, engine air filter and fuel filter. Gas or LPG will have this fuel filter. If it has water cooled engine you will need to change the anti-freeze as well. 4. Clean the hydraulic reservoir and replace the fluid. From this point every 400 hours should be the normal routine. You should be able to just clean the intake strainer, however, you will want to replace the hydraulic filters. 5. Lastly, with a grease gun, make sure to grease all the zirk fittings. anaging your service department is probably the most dynamic piece in the dealership. There are many moving parts and communication with other departments is key. It’s important to take some time to develop and work toward servicing your customers efficiently and effectively. This can be accomplished by changes to your dispatching or even how you stock parts on vans. However, it still comes back to communication to make sure things are happening the way you need them to.

Dispatching How you dispatch calls is critical to how you take care of customers and how quickly you can get equipment back up and running. The first thing to look at is what technology you already have that can allow you to dispatch more effectively. Do you run GPS on service vans or on phones provided to technicians? If so, is there a way you can use that GPS data to help in dispatching? There may be simple easy ways of using the data you already get with GPS and use it as a tool to help in dispatching. How often have you sent someone who was an hour away from a job instead of sending the technician 15 minutes away? Utilizing the technology you’re already spending money on can help maximize not only response time but also help cut costs in wear and tear on vans and on your fuel bill. If you don’t have GPS technology at hand, consider dedicating technicians to zones. Those zones can be near where

have limited space so it’s what you do with that space that makes a difference in how you service a customer. If you have a technician that works on class 2 and 3 equipment 80% of the time, should he really have 12 oil filters on his van? The same can be said for a technician that works mostly on class 4 and 5 equipment, should he have parts for electric equipment on his van? Maximizing the space by making sure the vans are tied to customers or zones can help in making sure you have the right parts for the job on the van.

they live to easily make calls first thing in the morning or in areas where it may be the outlying part of your territory. Having the techs in zones and looking at where you’re making calls can help make the same difference in response time and cost reduction. Van Inventories Van inventories are a tricky piece of the puzzle, there are certain key items that most, if not all, vans should have. Making sure that you’re looking at them and modifying the inventories is important. Van inventories and communication between departments is crucial. You need Parts to get the inventory and allocate it to the van. If you get new customers on PM, it’s especially important for Sales to get that information not only to Service to set the PM schedule but also to Parts to make sure you have adequate stock for normal PM items. What about large accounts? Do you have a fleet of trucks that is handled by a certain technician or two? It’s important that the van is tied to that account inventory wise. If you make a change in technician at that account then a van swap should be done to ensure that any inventory set up for that account remains with that account. Revisiting the zones topic, there might be zones that are dominated by more of a certain class of truck. Wouldn’t it be effective to make sure that the van inventories are set up to support that type of equipment rather than a one size fits all inventory? When working with van inventories, it’s important to remember that you

There are always more ways to pick up efficiencies; there are also times when much of this is going to go out the window due to customer requests or the need for a certain technician to take care of something. Managing those exceptions are important but building a steady procedure on how you dispatch and how you manage van inventories can go a long way to making sure that you’re not only maximizing uptime for your customer but also maximizing your labor, parts, and recovery cost dollar. Customers are concerned about price but they are also concerned with keeping their investment in equipment up and running. PTB Special Equipment supplied a custom built heavy duty electric truck for the handling of injection molds. This machine will be used for the transport of Mercedes Benz injection molds in Germany.
