Michael’s “Believe It or Not” By: Micheal Creamer

ecently I was reminded of an event I will never forget. It all started one afternoon when a customer with a pick-up truck backed into our receiving dock. In his truck was a Tennant 5700 Scrubber. This machine was being returned from a rental customer. I was immediately advised that this machine was back, however, something was wrong with it and I needed to look at it. I went immediately to check this machine out and the driver said “here is your scrubber; my company wanted me to bring back so we didn’t have to pay to have it picked-up.” One look is all it took. I said “OMG, what in the heck happened to it?”To describe it now is laughable but at that time is was very upsetting. As I remember the tires were flat with one of them half off the rim. The rotary brush blocks were cracked and one of them broke in half. The actual frame was bent. The rear squeegee was off the machine and also bent. The solution tank lid had come off the machine and just sitting on top tied with a rope to hold it on. Then there were the battery cables hanging out of the machine as if someone had ripped them out.

Once again, I questioned him, “What happened to our machine?” Well, he said. I had this thing in the back of my pick-up. It is a pretty heavy scrubber, so I thought it would stay back there without tying it down. I hit a bump on the road and the load shifted. It fell out of the back on the expressway. He then stated, “Don’t worry, it was the slow lane and nobody hit it.”

By this point I was getting quite disturbed and all I remember was letting out a laugh and asking, “How in the world did you get this back onto your truck?”

Believe it or not it is a true story and one that I can laugh at today!

He said, “Does that mean you’re not going to take it back?” All I have to say is “O M G”

In the beginning of this article I said that I had been reminded of this. The other day someone had told me they had a friend that lost a washing machine “that fell out of their pick-up truck.”

Just a note: This machine is a walk-behind scrubber, however, it weighs about 1,500 pounds so one man could not have lifted it. He explained that there was a car-load of college kids driving by and help him put it back onto the pick-up truck. “The batteries fell out of this thing, I think I put them all back”, he said.

Tech Talk “Twas the night before Christmas and all through the shop, not an engine was smoking except that damn diesel.”

his month’s article will cover basic troubleshooting methods for diagnosing any smoking diesel. First we should consider the difference between the mechanical workings of an LPG engine compared to diesel. The LPG engine revolves around air, fuel, compression and spark where the diesel requires only air, fuel and compression. The diesel’s higher compression creates the heat needed to ignite the diesel fuel. This explains why some diesels may smoke upon cold startup. The heat from the compression is absorbed into the cold engine block and does not completely ignite the fuel. Compression is critical to the operation of a diesel engine and should usually be around 300 to 450 psi. Refer to the engine’s service manual for exact specifications. The LPG engine has spark plugs, a distributor and an LP fuel system. The diesel has a more complex fuel system that revolves around an injection pump. Just as rotating the distributor advances or retards the timing, so does the twisting and turning of the injection pump. However for safety reasons, this should never be done while the engine is running. Alright, enough. Let’s troubleshoot that smoking diesel for the holidays.

Santa’s Smoking Diesel Checklist: White Smoke – this is caused by the burning of coolant. You will actually be able to smell the coolant burning. Causes • Blown cylinder head gasket • Warped cylinder head or engine block deck surface • Cracked cylinder head or engine block

Black Smoke – this is caused by a rich fuel mixture (Either too much fuel or not enough air) Causes • Clogged air filter • Injection pump out of adjustment (check the max fuel stop screw) • Improper or contaminated fuel • Faulty injector

Bluish White Smoke – incomplete combustion Causes • Low operating temperature (Check the thermostat) • Faulty/Stuck open injector • Low compression • Early (advanced) fuel injection pump timing • Injector lines crossed Blue Smoke – burning oil Causes • Worn valve guides • Worn piston rings or glazed cylinder walls

Quick diagnosis methods are pop testing the injectors to check for proper fuel spray. Both wet and dry compression tests to show any loss of compression and direct you towards either the valves or piston rings. If you believe the problem is in the fuel system you can check each cylinder by breaking loose the fuel lines one at a time and observe any change in the engines performance. The line that does not change performance is the cylinder with the problem. These simple tests will help direct you towards the cause of the problem and you can kickoff the New Year minus the smoke. Maintenance is critical with a diesel engine. Diesels are traditionally operated in outdoor, dusty, and harsh environments. Your standard oil and filter change, fuel filter, and re-adjustment of the valves are all of the important components of routine maintenance. Be sure to address any over fueling problems immediately as it can wash the oil off of the cylinder walls and cause the cylinders to become glazed. It is also good practice to routinely inspect the air filtration system for punctures, cracks, and/or loose hoses. It is commonplace in the reman business to see dusted rings or dirt ingested diesel failures. A well designed diesel engine is one that has an efficient air filtration system. Word of caution, do not assume that an air filter is correct just because it came out of the engine last. Always check to ensure proper seal and fit of the air filter to avoid needing another reman engine this Easter. Like always, inexpensive maintenance can save thousands of dollars in the long run. nnually there are over 34,000 injury accidents that involve forklifts, more than 13,000 Workers’ Compensation claims are filed as a result of forklift accidents and 70 to 90% of all accidents are caused by operator error. Furthermore, unnecessary wear and tear resulting in higher maintenance costs are attributable to improper operation and poorly trained operators.

There soaring statistics can be significantly reduced by implementing a comprehensive training program to help reduce accidents, injuries, employer liability and maintenance costs, only to realize improved morale, productivity and efficiency. The results (shown to the right), of a detailed study sponsored by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), found that proper training can improve operator safety and performance by as much as 70%. Properly trained forklift operators are the responsibility of the employer, as clearly stated in the O.S.H.A. Federal Regulation 1910.178, and safe operating practices must be reinforced in the workplace on a daily basis in addition to the required training, testing, evaluations and employer authorizations. The training program must include formal classroom instruction, written test and a driving evaluation or performance test for each specific forklift that the employee will operate. A periodic evaluation of each operator’s performance is required. Refresher or remedial training is required and the employer must check training to ensure that it is current.

Ken is modest about his achievement. “I’m competitive on equipment, but I don’t like to toot my own horn, so to speak,” he said. “I’m very proud to have brought positive recognition to ALL, however. I had the full support of Mitch McDonald, my General Manager. He made a point of coming to watch me, and helping my family with hotel accommodations, which I appreciate very much.” Though illness almost prevented him from competing, his family insisted he follow through. “They made me practice what I preach about always following through on commitments,” he added, laughing. “Being sick made completing the course a bit tougher, but I made it.”

required to be successful and provide positive publicity for the crane and rigging industry.

The rodeo, hosted by The Crane Institute of America and The Florida Crane Owner’s Council, is now in its third year. Officially known as the MCM & CIC Crane Operator Rodeo, the competition was developed by Maximum Capacity Media, publisher of Crane & Rigging Hot Line magazine, and Crane Institute Certification, a nationally accredited crane operator certification provider, to underscore the need for safe crane operation.

Ken will advance to the National Championship in Las Vegas in March 2014. Prize money totaling approximately $2,000 will be awarded to the winner, as will a special belt, similar to that given more traditional rodeo champions. “It’s not really my thing,” Ken said, “but I am going to wear my special Stetson for the occasion.”

The event is specifically designed to test crane operator skills. Contestants are required to place a crane’s headache ball into barrels without landing the ball or hitting any barrels; maneuver 55-gallon drums full of water through a barrel-lined obstacle course, and raise a 10-foot pipe from a horizontal to a vertical position, then place it between a set of cones. Each test is timed and monitored by the judges for load control, depth perception, and accuracy. Operators use a swing-cab style mobile crane with the boom extended approximately 70 feet.
