Automation Advances: Companies strive to meet needs with new tech solutions
named one of the 50 top startups in 2022 by the San Francisco-based publication The Information.
The company’s products aim to complement multiple aspects within an operation, allowing all components to function together smoothly.
While warehouses often have mixed materials, like totes, bins, or various-size pallets all requiring separate automated solutions, CoEvolution’s technology ensures they can be integrated together, according to Zhu. “We believe it is highly efficient and also saves a lot of space,” he said.
With trade shows like ProMat and Automate approaching, it is a season for thinking about new warehouse products and services. Some of these offerings also fulfill automated needs as the industry continues to advance.
This month, Material Handling Network talked to two of the companies that have launched new products and services for the industry in recent years.
Smart logistics offering “solutions on top of systems”
CoEvolution is a global company providing smart logistic solutions via software integration. The company’s approach is different from many others, according to Dr. Lijun Zhu, CEO. He said CoEvolution can partner with a variety of different robotics and described the technology as “solutions on top of systems” capable of handling diverse processes within a warehouse.
The business’ fleet management software offers an open control system that talks directly with the machines, allowing robots from that vendor to communicate and work together, according to the CoEvolution site, which noted the company was
CoEvolution’s flagship products are Co-pick and R-start, which are designed for manufacturing environments, according to the business website. The R-start software offers a highly flexible process configuration tool, according to Zhu. “We know that in manufacturing, the material flow process is complicated. Every factor has its own process,” he said.
“Traditionally, there are custom-made solutions for each factor. Because we integrate different types of robotics, we can configure these processes using the software,” said Zhu, who described the operation as working as simply as with “a click of a button.” He said the company’s solutions on average take less than a month to set up.
“A key feature is it directly connects and controls different types of automated equipment. You don’t have to spend extra effort to integrate with different types of robots,” Zhu said.
CoEvolution typically works with medium to larger-sized warehouses, according to Zhu, who said in the past year the Hangzhou, Chinabased company has implemented several overseas projects. The business is planning to expand into the U.S. market.
“We see a significant demand for this type of technology,” said Zhu, who said CoEvolution representatives will present at ProMat in March 2023. Zhu worked previously in logistics at Amazon in the U.S. and in China at Alibaba, according to the business website.
“I believe the U.S. has a strong need for new types of automation solutions,” Zhu said, noting how it can be difficult to find the correct fit in solutions for specific workflows, and CoEvolution’s software helps negate that difficulty.
Asked about the changing dimensions of warehouses as some companies seek to be closer to end users, Zhu noted a CoEvolution project in South Korea in a 1,000-square-meter warehouse with some materials on high levels.
In this type of scenario, the CoEvolution technology allows for collaboration between different types of robots, like one operating in storage and another in picking. “You can achieve high space utilization,” said Zhu, noting how this is especially helpful for businesses like e-commerce.
“You can predict what’s going to sell very well,” said Zhu, who said the CoEvolution software can accommodate high throughout-put easily. Zhu said company leaders envision future growth for CoEvolution’s solutions. “We believe this market is really big and we believe that automating warehouses and factories is the future,” he said, adding that he foresees increased industry-wide collaboration. “We believe in this new ecosystem we will play a very important role. We are building a basic infrastructure for this new era of automation,” Zhu said.
He noted that CoEvolution’s software is not meant to replace the software of traditional robotic vendors. “We believe the customer needs that. We want to decouple hardware and software so we can build a novelty solution in your business. We think more from the business-oriented point of view,” Zhu said.
Robotic cleaning with “flawless navigation”
At Avidbots Corp., the focus is on a vision of making robots ubiquitous to unlock humanity’s potential with a hyper-focus on autonomous cleaning, according to Faizan Sheikh, CEO and company co-founder, in an email to Material Handling Network.
The Kitchener, Ontario-based company launched its first version of Neo, a fully autonomous floorscrubbing robot, in 2016. Now organizations including warehouses, manufacturing sites, malls, universities, and other commercial spaces are using Neo to automate their cleaning, according to Sheikh.
“Avidbots has deployed over 1,000 Neos and is rapidly expanding its product and customer base in over a dozen countries and five continents,” he said.
Sheikh said the technology is advantageous in meeting the cleaning needs of continuous production environments. “By having Neo take the time-intensive task of maintaining an expansive warehouse and factory floors, management can reassign labor to other high-value tasks, saving both productivity and efficiency,” he said.
Additional benefits are generated in terms of safety, according to Sheikh. He said the Avidbots Command Center reports on real-time data based on Neo’s cleaning patterns, making maintenance schedules easier to track.
And the Avidbots Autonomy ensures “flawless navigation,” so Neo understands its operating environment and can avoid anyone or anything in its path, Sheikh said.
The technology is employable in almost any warehouse, according to Sheikh, who said a single Neo can clean over 40,000 square feet per hour and run as much as 6 hours on a single charge.
The aisle width required for operation is at least 6 feet, with an exit at the end of the aisle, according to the business. “Neo is a master in handling dynamic environments. With the latest
software update, Neo is able to clean even more of the warehouse space beyond the racking and what other solutions in the marketplace can today,” said Sheikh, who said Neo delivers a fully autonomous clean in both racking and bulk environments.
Robots like Neo are easy to deploy and maintain and do not require a special facility or staff, according to Sheikh. “These are out-of-the-box solutions that will drive value from the first day they’re deployed,” he said.
Leaders at Avidbots believe the importance of sanitation within facilities will continue to increase. “Across the world, artificial intelligence is being used to simplify everyday tasks. With Neo and cleaning automation, companies can focus on getting their core jobs done,” said Sheikh, who added that there is reassurance for companies using the Neo technology that they are investing in products that will keep employees safe.
Sheikh dubbed the current environment a “robotics revolution” akin to that of computers. “Multi-application robots will become commonplace across almost all industries,” he said, noting that ongoing labor challenges are driving the need to do more with less. Multi-application robots will help organizations meet operational needs, according to Sheikh. “In Neo’s case this includes high-touch surface disinfection in addition to floor care,” he said.
“As a society, we’re well on our way to making robots commonplace, finding true value in the work they do, and letting us focus on what we do best,” Sheikh said.

Safety First
Updated Arc Flash PPE Hoods and face shields improve user comfort and safety
or explosion may occur, leading to further harm. Proper clothing is required to protect personnel working within arc flash boundaries; while proper clothing resists heat and burns cleanly away, helping to protect wearers’ skin, improper attire can melt, causing clothed areas to be burned even more severely than just exposed skin. What’s more, arc flashes can lead to UV damage to eyes, hearing loss, extreme pressure on the body, and exposure to toxic fumes.
PPE helps prevent arc flash injuries
Arc flash incidents are of major concern for personnel working with energized equipment. When first adopted by OSHA in 2006 (1), the arc flash Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) worn by these personnel was often hot, uncomfortable, and cumbersome. Innovations in arc flash PPE, however, are maintaining and even increasing user safety while also improving users’ experience of comfort and visibility. Improved ventilation systems and the addition of hi-calorie lift front face shields help to reduce the cumbersome nature of PPE while keeping personnel safer than ever on the job.
Arc flash basics
Arc flash incidents can occur in energized equipment due to a number of causes: inadequate safe work practices, faulty insulation, improper grounding, loose connections, defective parts, ground faults in equipment, unguarded live parts, or even small animal incursion. Regardless of the cause, and though rare, arc flash incidents can be very hazardous to personnel working in energized environments, averaging 30,000 incidents every year according the Industrial Safety and Hygiene News (2)(3)
During an arc flash event, the extreme heat generated by the flash can ignite clothing and cause burns. Depending on conditions, a blast
Personal Protective Equipment specially designed for arc flash hazard areas can protect workers who are exposed to arc flash events, regardless of their cause. Properly designed PPE takes time to burn cleanly away from the body, thus reducing the likelihood and severity of skin surface burns to personnel. This, in turn, increases incident survivability and eliminates the hazards of melting clothing.
Arc flash PPE is regulated to ensure personnel safety. NFPA 70E® Article 130 – Work involving Electrical Hazards – says, “Employees exposed to electrical hazards when the risk associated with that hazard is not adequately reduced by the applicable electrical installation requirements shall be provided with, and shall use, protective equipment that is designed and constructed for the specific part of the body to be protected and for the work to be performed.”
These regulations state that when in use, arc rated clothing must both cover all ignitable clothing and allow for movement and visibility. The type of PPE required varies by the possible severity of an arc flash event, and thus by voltages of the energized equipment; in highly energized equipment where arc flash events may be severe, hoods and face shields are particularly important for protecting workers heads and faces from burns and UV light damage. These hoods must cover the wearer’s entire
neck, while the face shield must wrap around to protect the face, chin, forehead, ears and neck. These hoods and face shields can be very hot and cumbersome, and can be inconvenient to put on and remove as needed during work and breaks or consultations.
Innovations in hood and face shield technology
Two innovations in arc flash PPE technology, specifically for hoods and face shields, can help to improve comfort and ease of use in hazardous arc flash environments. These improvements are a ventilation system throughout the PPE suit, and a lift-front face shield integrated into the hood.
The Cementex ventilation system features a durable Kydex™ shell and runs on AA batteries for 6 hours, reaching thirty-five CFM.
The ventilation system improves comfort by increasing the amount of overall oxygen flowing suit; what’s more, on the extremely hot days the airflow assists in cooling workers’ skin and thus extending time between water breaks and reducing the risk of overheating.
The other major innovation is in the introduction of lift-front face shields integrated into arc flash PPE hoods. Take, for example, the lift-front face shields for the hoods in the Cementex Ultralight Series of Arch Flash PPE. The liftfront hoods provide a larger viewing area and provides personnel (who move out of the Arc Flash Boundary) with the ability to lift the face shield. By enhancing the area of view to see potential hazards and users’ peripheral vision, the new lift-front hood design helps to minimize accidental contact with energized, hazardous conductors. Outside the arc flash boundary with the face shield safely lifted, the personnel can consult with supervisors or coworkers, drink water, or allow greater airflow while taking a break without needing to remove the entire hood. Afterwards, it is simple to pull the face shield back down, return to the work zone, and
continue working while adequately protected from arc flash hazards in a timely manner.
Cementex’s lift front hoods remain compatible with its innovative hood ventilation system, thus ensuring the greatest possible safety of personnel in environment around energized equipment.
Any worker who is not diligent in their safety practices could fail to replace the hood to its protective configuration. As a result, retraining personnel to build up habits of securely latching the face shield before entering the arc flash boundary is important to ensuring the greatest possible safety.
Cementex PPE hoods are unique within the Arc Flash Protective Equipment landscape, as the hood completely covers users and is worn over a hard hat, with a headlight available on the top. This hood design enables the use of the ventilation system and provides greater overall protection to users. The liftfront face shield design enhances these innovative hoods even further.
Cementex PPE hoods are unique within the Arc Flash Protective Equipment landscape, as the hood completely covers users and is worn over a hard hat, with a headlight available on the top.
Arc flash PPE is critical to keeping personnel safe
Arc flash PPE is critical to keeping personnel working with energized equipment safe in the occurrence of an arc flash or arc blast hazard. Innovations in arc flash PPE help users to maintain safe practices near energized equipment, reducing the risk of injury, while also providing a more
comfortable, easier to use PPE experience. What’s more, these updates to arc flash PPE offerings also help protect users from secondary hazards like dehydration and overheating. The greater field of vision offered by some new arc flash face shields also helps users to maintain better visibility while working with energized equipment, thus reducing the risk of accidents and improving safety as well.

Chain Reaction
Four key steps for a strategic supply chain
not contradictory strategies. The last thing you want is to succeed in one area and fail in another as this may cause your supply chain from becoming a strategic part of your company’s goals.
Once you’ve defined what those values are, you must ensure that message is shared throughout your organization — from the CEO to the warehouse workers. The values should showcase how the supply chain strategically improves your organization as a whole.
2. Be Agile and Adaptive at Your Core
I want to provide you with four key steps for a strategic supply chain that you can use as your guidebook. Because let’s be honest, supply chain has traditionally taken a back seat in the boardroom. Unfortunately, it took a global pandemic for most organizations to take a hard look at their supply chain and warehouse management operations and realize the broken links. Now as more supply chain leaders are getting a seat at the executive table, they must be prepared to answer how the supply chain will be a driver for the organization’s success.
A notable Gartner article stated, “To adapt to the board’s shifting priorities, supply chain leaders must focus on driving performance while managing risks and still pursue opportunities to leverage new technologies, products and services for business growth.” Unquestionably this is a tough burden to bear for most supply chain leaders, but trust me when I say, it is possible to move forward confidently.
1. Define Your Supply Chain Values and Enforce Them
First and most importantly, you must build your supply chain values. Is the value of your supply chain to do more with less, to be sustainable or perhaps to be resilient? Pick the metrics that align with your core company values. Keep in mind that whatever value you pick, make sure the values are
Companies that fail to innovate are doomed for failure. Just look at the fact that 88% of the Fortune 500 firms that existed in 1955 are gone. Does your organization encourage innovation? Better yet, does your organization allow for and even encourage occasional failures?
Amazon is notorious for constantly trying new ideas and then learning from those trials in order to move forward with stronger ideas. A strategic supply chain emulates this approach of being agile and adaptive. In today’s environment, only organizations that act based upon data rather than guesses win. You may have heard the phrase, “remove the HiPPO from the room” or “get rid of the HiPPO.” HiPPO is an acronym for highest paid person’s opinion and it’s certainly not the best way of making decisions and determining what to try next. Test your innovations, get the data and get rid of the HiPPO.
3. Integrate All Your Supply Chain Channels for Both Demand and Supply
A big differentiator of strategic supply chains is how they are run on a single, harmonized system in order to react and respond to strategic decisions. Supply chains running on disparate systems rarely can adapt to change.
Do all of your inbound orders come into the same order management system (OMS) and are managed in the same way by the same team? Or do you have a separate supply chain structure for
domestic vs. international? In order to cross the threshold into greatness, ensure that your complete supply chain organization has a unified approach for success.
4. Look for Ways Technology can Help
Naturally being a supply chain solutions company, Tecsys is going to highlight ways that technology can solve supply chain problems. But in all seriousness, in today’s market environment there is no way to get a complete and effective picture of how your entire end-to-end supply chain is performing without using technology to gather the data. You need data to drive your strategic decisions — which ones are working and which ones are costing the most. More importantly, data will give insights into why something is not working. Start using analytics to guide your “what would happen if” scenarios.
Forge an Unstoppable Supply Chain
These are four simple but effective steps in moving towards a strategic supply chain and
ensuring your seat at the big table stays warm. Supply chain leaders have been waiting a long time for a key role in strategic decisions and having the supply chain become a core enabler for organizational strategy. Make sure you don’t waste this opportunity. Think how your supply chain fits into your organization and if you can make it more strategic.
Bill Denbigh serves as the vice president of product marketing at Tecsys. Bill started working in supply chain software some 30 years ago; his entire career has been laser-focused on designing and building pragmatic supply chain solutions that address the real problems that customers are facing in their supply chain operations. Bill has worked on virtually every aspect of the software in the supply chain, gaining insight into the inner workings of some of the industry’s most complex challenges; Bill, however, tackles those challenges with a no-nonsense levelheadedness that has earned him great repute both internally and among customers.
Business Management
Achieve a cleaner, low-carbon operation with propane
forklifts. Findings show that in most states, propane forklifts are the cleaner option compared with electric forklifts, especially when considering marginal electric grid emissions. The case for internal combustion engine (ICE) forklifts becomes even stronger with hybrids and renewable fuels. In fact, nearly all propane ICE forklift technologies emit extremely low criteria pollutants compared to the regulatory standards.
Forklifts are essential for any warehouse, distribution center, or production facility, and choosing the right energy source for forklifts has an immediate impact on operations and a lasting repercussions on the environment.
Supply chains contribute significantly to a company’s carbon footprint. In fact, the carbon emissions in supply chains are, on average, four times those of a company’s direct operations. Forklift fleets are often the workhorse of these operations, and using propane-powered forklifts creates an opportunity for warehouses and distribution centers to significantly improve their carbon footprint.
Propane equipment ensures sustainable, lowcarbon operation
Propane is a clean, low-carbon alternative energy source. According to the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) when propane is used to power forklifts, sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions are reduced by 76 percent compared with electric grid emissions that power battery-operated equipment. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) and hydrocarbon emissions are reduced by 94 percent compared with diesel models.
A research paper published by PERC, Fork(lifts) in the (Off) Road: Should We Ban Internal Combustion Engines for Electric? compares the lifecycle emissions profiles of propane and electric
The analysis used available engine certification emissions data published by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The study presented the following scientific findings:
• A true zero-emissions forklift does not exist.
• Hybrid electric forklifts, when paired with both conventional and renewable fuels, emit less CO2 than battery-electric forklifts in well-to-wheel emissions.
• For most states, NOx emissions from propanepowered forklift engines can be less than half that of battery-electric forklifts powered by the electric grid.
• 314,000 ICE forklifts are operating in California alone. Replacing all ICE forklifts in the state with battery-electric forklifts would require nearly 10 GWh/day of additional charging capacity.
This is important as forklift managers across the US work to navigate new emissions requirements for Class 4 and Class 5 forklifts. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is pursuing a ban on all equipment that uses diesel, propane, natural gas, and gasoline—and mandating the use of battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell electric forklifts only.
Propane’s edge over electric comes down to electric’s full-fuel-cycle emissions including those produced in the manufacturing, transportation, and disposal of electric forklift batteries, as well as the generation and distribution of electricity.
Propane’s low-emissions profile allows the equipment to safely operate indoors (in properly ventilated environments) and outdoors. In fact, well-maintained propane forklifts meet or exceed nationwide indoor air quality standards.
When selecting a forklift energy source, companies making the choice between electric and propane-powered equipment often rely on the fact that electric equipment produces zero emissions during operation but tends to overlook its full emissions profile, which includes well-to-wheel emissions. Propane produces significantly fewer lifecycle emissions than both diesel and electric and is the best choice for businesses interested in reducing their carbon footprint.
Going green doesn’t have to break the budget
Many companies that are looking to reduce emissions have noticed that it can sometimes come with a higher price tag. With propane forklifts, companies can reduce emissions more costeffectively than other energy sources.
Propane forklifts offer cost savings throughout ownership. The capital costs of propane-powered forklifts can be up to 30 percent lower than those for electric when factoring in the equipment needed for battery recharging. Propane helps avoid these extra expenses, saving money for other line items like new employees, additional training, or business development, to name a few. Businesses operating on propane may also be able to lock in a mutually beneficial fuel contract with their local propane supplier for more savings and financial peace of mind.
While the duty cycle of forklift applications varies, one propane cylinder will power a forklift for an entire eight-hour shift. An equivalent battery-electric lift often does not last a full eight hours of continuous use. Propane forklifts are also 90 percent efficient versus electric forklifts which are about 25-30 percent efficient from generation to distribution.
Material handling professionals continue to choose propane as the best power source. Propane forklifts’ ability to work around the clock and reduce emissions, while keeping costs in check, are just a few reasons that business owners count on them to get the job done.
